I am a total sucker for independent bookstores. I want to buy them out. Category killers are always there, but I feel like the curation and dedication put by the staff of independent bookstores make the journey so worth it. I stopped in and explored last Saturday and was absolutely mesmerized by their great selection of book. I left with a copy of Martyr! by Kaveh Akbar which had been on my list to read bit by recommendation. It was hoping when I went with plenty of people in the cafe and people shopping. Such a cute and vibrant place. I will be back for more books! RIYL: Books and People

One of the best book stores we've ever been to. Highly extensive collection of fantasy and sci-fi including some harder to find books. Delicious coffee brewed fresh on the first floor in the back. Cute European toiletry items such as marvis toothpaste and French soap. Great cards for all occasions and super nice staff. Highly recommend visiting if you can, everything was a great value and not overpriced.

BookPeople has it going on! It was very busy on a Thursday night! Highlights: There's a large selection of genres and curated sections with staff recommendations from a large independent section, translated lit, banned books, sci-fi, romance, historical fiction, etc. A saw a few awesome books to buy! The books like selected were both $19 each. It was nice to see an elevator near the cafe for those who need it to access the second floor. From the cafe I ordered a matcha and banana bread from the cafe both were amazing! Another plus is the spacious parking lot!

Before relocating to ATX, we would visit family here twice yearly, and at least once a year had to make a stop here. This is my first visit as a resident, and wow, did I forget how much I dig it. I'm all about supporting local businesses, especially independent book sellers. It's a welcoming and relaxed environment with employees who know their stuff; true book lovers. I like that you can get almost anything from the obscure to mainstream. If they don't have it, they'll do their best to get it ordered for you. It's a pretty impressive selection of books, and I often find myself losing track of time. That's a good thing. I like the little cafe too, good coffee, tea & treats.

Love! Love! Love! Nice selection. Upstairs and downstairs. Staff was very friendly and helpful with finding books and making recommendations. Love the decor/set up. Especially in their romance section.

Support your Local Independent Bookstore :) I love independent bookstores and make a point to visit them in various cities. BP is exactly one the independent bookstores cities need. The broad selection, categorization, and [employee] reviews are awesome. A bookstore by BookPeople for BookPeople with some extra book (& knowledge) related merch thrown-in for good measure. The value indies provide is in their selection and curation or titles; well worth it.

So many books in here! And I love the layout and the organization of this book store. The parking lot doesn't have many spots open on the weekend, but people are always coming and leaving, so there shouldn't be much of a wait for a spot to open up as long as you make a loop or two around the parking lot. I'd say the books are priced pretty similarly to other book stores, but the selection is amazing.

I love this bookshop! It's both cozy and large with a great selection and so many little odds and ends. You can find local romance author Ali Hazelwood's signed section, browse all the fun gift-y chotchkes, and flip through some travel books -- including one with a great little excerpt about Austin.

I've been going to this book store for years now. They have a great selection of books on various topics. My favorite sections are translated literature, cookbooks, and health. They seemed to move some stuff around a little bit on the second floor (not drastically, but I couldn't find a specific topic last time I was there). The prices are about average for the books with occasional discounts. The staff is usually really friendly and helpful. I also enjoy their cafe since thay have pretty decent coffee and pastries. For people who struggle with choice, there's a fun "blind box" of a book where you only know a vague description of it and you're to find out what it is after check out.

This is my favorite bookstore. They have an amazing selection of signed books, and constantly have author events so you can hear your favorite authors on tour and get a personalized signed copy of your own! If you have a little time to spare, I highly recommend reading through the book recommendations they have placed on books throughout the store. It's a fun way to learn about a book you might not have considered picking up otherwise! Their book recommendations are always stellar, and the staff are all passionate readers who are happy to recommend something for any reading taste. It's so nice to support a local independent Austin institution, and I'll be coming back for years to come. Beware, though: you will leave the store with a lighter wallet than when you entered.

I still love this bookstore! It appears that many people in Austin do as well, since every time I'm there, there is a good number of patrons in the store. They truly have a great selection of books to choose from and numerous displays of relevant groupings of books to catch your eye. Recently I found displays for St. George's Day, Mother's Day, scary books, and the Pink Pony Club. Sometimes the displays will include other thematic items such as mugs, socks, puzzles, or notebooks that relate to the theme. BookPeople is one stop shopping for your book-loving friends/family members. Stop shopping at big-box book sellers, and stop supporting the monsterous Amazonian machine! Support local business and come visit BookPeople!

Amazing book store and I love all the random trinkets everywhere you can buy too. I always spend way too much money here and I already can't wait to go back. Delicious cafe too and they host cool events some times.

Still it sucks to see this going away. We came in, bought some books and browed a bit. They place had a fair amount of people, still quite a few books, music, and movies. I couldn't find much I was intersteied in but Shana did and even found me a book or two. The bathroom is weird, it is around a corner that looks like you are not allowed to go to and there is a key on a hanger that you take in with you, you don't need to unlock the door and I am not sure it even locks. If the key is missing that is how you know the bathroom has someone in it, there is a small hook on the inside to hang the key while you are in the restroom. So you have to hope people notice it is gone and you have to hope everyone puts the key back. But they are clean and they have a sign in the bathroom that the front desk can supply you with pads if needed. The one misstep here was the guy running the front desk, he was not super friendly, I heard his reaction to a lady gushing about how great the place was and how many books she found for such a good price, some were gifts and he could care less. He wasn't rude but he was doing that thing where you just nod and say uh huh. I also heard him later say he was from another branch of the library, I don't know which but I hope we don't run into him again. We got something like 7 or 8 books for 9 bucks which is fantastic. He checked us out fast, as he had better things to do and we headed out.

Let me start with - it's not a big place, and the selection isn't huge so it's not terribly likely you'll find something very specific, much less a popular title. However, it's a nice concept. They sell retired library books for VERY cheap, so if you're list looking for a new book in general, this is actually a pretty decent spot to get some and save money. They have a small lot out front but I had no trouble finding parking. The staff there were really friendly and helpful; they don't have a catalog because of all the turnover but they do have things arranged by genre so they could point me toward where I might find the book I was looking for.

When you get this "arrived" message from GPS and you do not see the place you are looking for, it is unsettling. I called Book Woman and kind voice on the phone told me to go more south. Finally, I found it...score! It is literally tucked away in a small strip mall. First, I notice a beautiful angel painted in many colors on the bookstore's window...warm and welcoming. Next, I entered the store and was immediately asked to put on a mask. Flash back to the heart of Covid days. I have not been asked to wear a mask in any establishment for the last two years, so this was a little off-putting. However, I am rules follower, so I complied. Book Woman was established in 1975 as a feminist collective and the store has spent decades championing diverse voices. It has grown into one of the oldest and most recognized feminist bookstores in the United States, which is pretty cool. It's a small bookstore so it does not take long to peruse the shop. I walked up and down the aisles discovering their genre of books. The selection included women authors, LGBTQ+ literature, social justice topics, and independent publishers. The woman who directed me to the bookstore was the only one in store. She answered my questions and was otherwise busy unpacking boxes of books. In addition to books, Book Woman sells t-shirts, cards, puzzles, journals, soap, and jewelry. These complementary items is a good addition to the books. All items are reasonably priced.

Black Pearl Books, one of Austin's few Black-owned independent bookstores, is closing this chapter of their physical operations. Husband-and-wife owners Eric and Katrina Brooks stated that this move comes as they "rethink life as empty nesters." I got an opportunity to chat with the couple. Eric said their daughter, Alicia, will be going off to college. He said they still continue to do pop ups with community partners like ACC Highland campus and the Austin Public Library. The owners will work toward their future plans and continue to host authors through the fall. The closing celebration on Saturday will include live illustrations, henna, matcha, and a live reading and book signing. Importantly, the City of Austin has designated June 20, 2026, as Black Pearl Books Day. This bookstore has been a beacon of light in the Austin community and will be sorely missed! For me, it is a bigger issue...we see more and more smaller businesses closing especially over the last few years. Big box national book sellers seemingly are expanding. While Black Pearl Books owners are closing their brick-and-mortar shop, I am excited for the new opportunities that await them. We say so long for now...not goodbye!

This is a place I started going to when I first started coming to Austin on twice-yearly visits (prior to relocation here). For several years in fact. It is one the best places to obtain banned books. The collection is impressive and IMPORTANT. Though it is a small shop, they have EVERYTHING. If they don't they get it for you. They go above and beyond! I write this as if they are still in existence and that's because as I write this, they are. While there is still time, get out and support this local, Black-owned, glorious bookstore! When they're gone and doing other things, continue to support them. I will start with the "downsides" (as few as they are). This place is pretty small. Like smaller than I thought. Because of this, its not the greatest place for browsing. They had some "witch" stuff which was interesting, but I was looking for a book. Also, most of the books are used which isn't terrible, but not exactly clear. As for the positives, this place is a true small business so you really get the personal touch when it comes to service. I also picked this place because it did a "blind book" service where they will pick out a book or two for you based on your description. A bunch of bookstores do this, but the Book Burrow understood the assignment exactly. They got me THREE books and all of them were PERFECT. I was surprised how they found my vibe and found me unique books! They also wrapped it in a beautiful paper and addressed it to me! It was like a little birthday gift to myself! As you can tell, I was very floored by the selections. This is the small business of small businesses so I am so HAPPY that I was able to stop by! While the place is small and their selection is in flux, I really appreciated the personal touch from the staff at The Book Burrow.
