Great first experience at this woman/LGBTQ+ owned independent bookstore! They're currently residing in a wine bar called Three Legged Goat. I'm usually reluctant to try the blind date with a book selections, as I don't want to end up with a book I already own/have read or a mainstream popular pick. But after perusing their shelves of mostly unique picks I knew this was The Place to finally try blind date with a book and I happily got one I haven't read and didn't own yet! They have a large selection of locally made stickers of all kinds of topics for $1-3. They also offer a section with "bargain books" that are only $5! Some of the sections that they currently have are various YA and younger children books, new fiction, sci-fi/fantasy, romance, booktok picks, nonfiction, political, graphic novels, true crime, identity/personal empowerment, mystery/thriller, and classics that I can remember so lots of topics covered! There is merch like shirts, tea towels, games, cards, writing utensils, coasters, candles, and much more. Yes, the prices are going to be more than getting a book on Amazon, but you're supporting your community and someone's dream! I'll happily pay more to be able to have an inclusive space to purchase books near me. Can't wait to go back soon!

Independent bookstore, with some amazing stickers and pins. It can't get any better than that.

It's tiny, but packs a lot of punch. Serious Austin vibes somehow made their way out to Pflugerville.

I came today for a couple of things. Magazines, and a movie that I just heard about…read more The magazines I'm looking for is for a vision board I'm making. But unfortunately they had a very small selection of magazines and nothing that would fit what I was looking for anyway. I was also looking for a Stephan king movie that I heard about. And unfortunately I was out of luck with that too. I was helped by a nice gentleman that worked at the sell counter. And he offered to order the movie for me from another store, I think he said San Antonio, but I said, it wasn't necessary. The store was very neat and organized. Prices were fair for gentle used books.

So for my most recent visit here, I don't know if we just happened to come at a particularly slow time, but they priced a big box of books we brought in super fast. So if you're selling and are low on time maybe try this Half Price Books location? They had a few carts outside which helped us bring the box in so that's a plus. It is a nice spot with plenty of selection. It's all well kept as well. There's plenty of parking and everything is nice. I managed to snag a birthday gift for my hubs here on a visit, I managed to find a hardback book he had been looking for in pretty solid condition.

On June 20, 2026, a beloved north Austin bookstore will cease operations as a brick-and-mortar…read moreshop. Their online presence will continue during the transitionary period. Black Pearl Books, one of Austin's few Black-owned independent bookstores, is closing this chapter of their physical operations. Husband-and-wife owners Eric and Katrina Brooks stated that this move comes as they "rethink life as empty nesters." I got an opportunity to chat with the couple. Eric said their daughter, Alicia, will be going off to college. He said they still continue to do pop ups with community partners like ACC Highland campus and the Austin Public Library. The owners will work toward their future plans and continue to host authors through the fall. The closing celebration on Saturday will include live illustrations, henna, matcha, and a live reading and book signing. Importantly, the City of Austin has designated June 20, 2026, as Black Pearl Books Day. This bookstore has been a beacon of light in the Austin community and will be sorely missed! For me, it is a bigger issue...we see more and more smaller businesses closing especially over the last few years. Big box national book sellers seemingly are expanding. While Black Pearl Books owners are closing their brick-and-mortar shop, I am excited for the new opportunities that await them. We say so long for now...not goodbye!

Now that they're about to close, I decide to write my review. Well, it's another one that has been…read moresitting for SO LONG as a pending draft, I may as well get to it. Though they are closing the brick & mortar, the owners say they aren't going anywhere and this makes me happy. I am hoping this means we will continue to see them involved in all things books, social justice, and more. This is a place I started going to when I first started coming to Austin on twice-yearly visits (prior to relocation here). For several years in fact. It is one the best places to obtain banned books. The collection is impressive and IMPORTANT. Though it is a small shop, they have EVERYTHING. If they don't they get it for you. They go above and beyond! I write this as if they are still in existence and that's because as I write this, they are. While there is still time, get out and support this local, Black-owned, glorious bookstore! When they're gone and doing other things, continue to support them. We need MORE people and MORE places like this. Period. They walk the walk and talk the talk! A++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
