I came today for a couple of things. Magazines, and a movie that I just heard about. The magazines I'm looking for is for a vision board I'm making. But unfortunately they had a very small selection of magazines and nothing that would fit what I was looking for anyway. I was also looking for a Stephan king movie that I heard about. And unfortunately I was out of luck with that too. I was helped by a nice gentleman that worked at the sell counter. And he offered to order the movie for me from another store, I think he said San Antonio, but I said, it wasn't necessary. The store was very neat and organized. As a chain, I have always had a fantastic experience at every Half Price Books I've been to. Super clean building, well organized shelves, friendly staff, and great pricing has been consistent. So for my most recent visit here, I don't know if we just happened to come at a particularly slow time, but they priced a big box of books we brought in super fast. So if you're selling and are low on time maybe try this Half Price Books location? They had a few carts outside which helped us bring the box in so that's a plus. It is a nice spot with plenty of selection. It's all well kept as well. There's plenty of parking and everything is nice. I managed to snag a birthday gift for my hubs here on a visit, I managed to find a hardback book he had been looking for in pretty solid condition. read more

If you are searching for the popular authors, it's all here, and the prices are reasonable. Also, they have a music and movie section that's huge; it's very impressive. I remember years ago, I donated so many books here in one setting, and they were so kind about it. I must admit that there were some really great books in my collection, but I was moving, and it was impossible to take them with me. So, the best thing to do was to donate them, give them to someone else to read. Also, I have so many memories over the years here with my mom. She was an avid reader and loved this store too. Cleaned out my media room today and took two boxes full of originally packaged VHS movies and music concerts (Luther Vandross, Cameo, Earth Wind & Fire, EnVogue, David Sanborn, Kenny G, Janet Jackson, etc) to the Round Rock store to sell. I researched every item I took and many were selling for well over $30 on eBay, Amazon and other sites. When called up for an offer, the kid quoted me $262 for the items he could buy. I asked for clarification and he stated "$2.62"!!! I promptly removed the items from the counter and will take them to a resale/thrift store as a donation. I bought every one of these new and stored them in my media areas -some for almost 30 years!! If you have any media worth anything and want to sell them...avoid Half Price Books at all costs!!! read more

I get it, the AC never works and maybe that is why all the workers are so upset all the time? I have come in a few times and everytime they are rude and seem annoyed when I ask where I might find a certain book. They are constantly changing the layout so excuse me fo asking for help. I like half price books, but this location is just okay. They told me they had a book set aside for me and when I got there it was no where to be found. Also, I have never sold books back to a half price, but 40 cents for one book and they weren't taking the other (which was a recent book) was a bit disappointing to me. read more

This half price bookstore isn't there biggest, but it's not there smallest either. They have a very large CD selection, but not as large a record selection. However, behind the cash register, you'll see many collectible records. They also have 8 locked glass cabinets where they keep all of their collectible books, games and electronics. They actually have a book section located near the front door where they have all their rare collectible books. Keep in mind if you're going to bring books to sell here, don't expect to get much money for them. The same is true with records which is why you should sell them at your local record store instead. read more

Who can't lose a few hours on the weekend just browsing and realizing they really do need that novel/game/comic/album/tv show/keychain at the best price you'll get outside the randomness of a thrift store?? It's a treasure hunt with only great prizes at the end. The parking is plentiful but gets super busy so take your time coming in. This is an institution and hope to return many times. Books and comics and more media at half label price or less. You can get some fancy books or you can get clearance, but there's always something fun to overturn. read more

Yesterday, I came to this location so my son and daughter could pick out some books. They are both bibliophiles. As with many new/used book stores, you must diligently 'hunt' for the book(s) you seek; this is also the case at this location. We spent over an hour at this location to pick out about 13 books. This bookstore has an amalgamation of books from various genres as well as C.D.s and other tchotchkes. During this visit, there were several employees in the establishment shelving books and doing other tasks and of all the employees working, one did offer assistance (when we were on the way out). In general, if you have time to look through books to find something of interest, this may be a shop for you. However, if you are looking for an in and out 'wham bam thank yah ma'am' experience, go to Barnes & Noble instead. read more

Great place to buy, horrible place to sell. We brought in about 200 books as my wife is a retiring school teacher, about 100 of the books were brand new, 50 lightly used and maybe another 50 in average shape. These were not obscure books, some popular titles, etc. When we got our offer we just laughed - for 150 of the books they offered $3.83. I fully understand the issues of popularity, supply, overstock etc, but .02 a book for brand new books and titles, do not sell your books here! Give them to charity, one of the books we were offered .02 on brand new was on the shelf for 5.99 used.... read more

I've been a customer and a fan of this company for many years but they lost my business today. I went to buy some books and had 16 books that I had purchased there for a total of $90.34. They still had their price tags so all they needed to do was put them on the shelf. I didn't expect much store credit but I thought if I could get eight or ten bucks it would go towards today's purchase. They offered me less than 15 cents a book. I didn't give the young lady a hard time because I knew that she was not the person who set policies. But I kept the books to donate to Goodwill. But I'll never spend another cent with Half Price Books. I'm sure they don't care but my studies of customer service always called for a win/win scenario. What we got here is a lose/ lose. I love this local store. The selection is always well stocked and varied. I appreciate how organized the store is by section and subsection. This is one of my go-to spots in town to look for gifts or for when treating myself! I like to come look for children's presents under $5. They have a really stocked movie section with blu-rays separate and a decent selection of hard-to-find special editions. I've also been here plenty of times for selling. They buy any entertainment media including games. If they don't buy it, they donate it! Don't expect to make a ton of money, but it's worth it if your stuff is destined for Goodwill anyway. read more

I used to drive from Georgetown to Round Rock to sell my books and magazines. Before Covid, I would get $4-$8 for my collection. Around a year ago, they started only giving me $1 - $2 for the same amount of stuff. I decided that this won't pay for the gas and traffic hassle driving there and back. So I just donate my stuff to the library. I guess the management decided to make more money off sellers, but for me the math no longer works. read more

Well I sure feel taken advantage of! Just took 50+ books to sell to them, many of them University textbooks, and all together I was offered only ten dollars! I accepted it because I didn't want to lug all of them back home and honestly didn't know anything else to do with them. As I'm finishing up the transaction, I see another employee slap a $89 price tag on one of my books! What the heck!? I can understand if a book has little value, I'm going to receive little, but paying me pennies for a book and then turning around and selling it for almost 90 bucks? That's just wrong. I understand they are in it for making money and they have overhead, that's fine, but do they not realize they wouldn't even have a business without people like us selling them their used books? Went by this store today its been closed since a tornado hit it 3 weeks ago. Its still boarded up and still closed even though yelp states it open. Its not open just trying to save others time so they dont drive all the way over to find it closed. read more

Wow where to start? The staff are all so happy, helpful and encouraging. Clean environment and easy to navigate to the correct sections. The kids/youth/young adult area is great lots of small seating options for the kids. The audio area is well managed as well. Oh the video game section has some cool retro finds as well as a miniature Pac-Man stand up arcade to play. read more

I won't bother selling my magazines and books to Half Price books in Round Rock any longer. In the past year or so, the amount they pay is peanuts and doesn't justify my time or mileage going there. Unfortunately, I will just have to recycle them as paper in the future. Not sure what is happening, as their resell prices don't seem to have gone down. I don't know what it is about Half Price books.... but every time I walk in here I have to pee. It's like a Pavlovian response.... . Too much information? Maybe..... but they have a nice bathroom, and it's nice to know I could find a book on Dr. Pavlov in the store if I wanted to research my condition. I always check Half Price Books before heading to Barnes and Noble, Borders, or Book People. You'd be surprised at how many times they've had the book I've been looking for. Unfortunately asking for help or calling ahead isn't an option. They don't have an "inventory", they just price them and put them on the shelves. They only get 4 stars because sometimes they can charge a lot for an obviously older and outdated book. Also, their bathroom is nice, but not soundproof, and the bookstore is obviously quite. I run the water as a distraction.... I would rather people think I'm washing my hands for 2 minutes then hear me peeing (I'm fooling nobody...). read more

I love this store, and I love the location. I'm very nearly addicted to it, especially when they're doing a sale. To be sure, if you're looking for a specific book, there is probably a less than even chance you'll find it on any one particular visit. You should check here first, though, because if they do have it, it'll be a fraction of the price you'll pay at B&N. Plus, you'll end up walking out with a bunch of other books you found while searching for your intended target. The inventory is constantly rotating, so if you can wait, your book will likely turn up eventually. FYI, my preferred genre is history and biography, so you escapist teeniebopper vampire fiction types might see things differently; not sure. This location is smaller than the Austin locations. It's also more laid back and relaxing, and the inventory is still voluminous (pun intended). The complaints about selling really boggle the mind. How do you think HPB can sell you that bestseller or Pulitzer Prize-winning tome for $6 or $7, while providing a physical location for you to shop and a livelihood for those nice people behind the counter? Not by paying sellers top dollar, of course. Grow up people; this is a business. read more

The staff is helpful. If I know what books I want they will look them up in the computer for me to see if they are available versus scouring the shelves. I recently bought some great new and used books for a baby shower so great children section. I like non fiction and can usually find something on my list and prices are very reasonable esp when they are offering a coupon deal. The only downside is when selling books and DVDs you get very little compensation so if you can sell on Ebay or Amazon you'll get more esp for newish books. read more

I love half price books in general, and I enjoy this location mostly because they are a Half Price Books. The store is a little on the small side, so the selection isn't the best, but it is a nice little bookstore for bargain-hunting, and I usually find something worth perusing and possibly buying. My kids enjoy the kids' section and I do too. It's a good place to find readers at all grade levels, for pretty cheap. It's not the best place to sell your books. The one on N. Lamar will buy everything you take them, but really, HPB in general will not buy much. If you have valuable books and want top-dollar for them, sell them yourself on Amazon. If you have books that are selling for $.01 on Amazon, have a garage sale and sell them for a quarter apiece. If you have some leftover after that, take them to HPB on Lamar. But if you're just looking to shop for some cheap books, movies, and music, this is a great place. read more

This particular HPB is paperback heaven! They always seem to have the cheesy paranormal romance or fantasy book I'm looking for. I've also found many a board game here for cheap. I really like this particular HPB and go here about once a month, even though it's in Round Rock. The store is large and there's plenty of parking. No complaints! read more

For the record, I'd like to review this Half Price as a book store not as a place to sell books. Obviously, they have to get inventory from some place though. The store is alright though a little small. The folks in here are pretty friendly. I have a very low success rate at finding what I'm looking for in here though. Maybe it has to do with the books and the music that others in Round Rock are selling. I never find the music I want and rarely walk out with a book that I went in looking for. On the other hand, the DVD section is pretty good. My recommendation is that you just come in when you know you want something but aren't looking for anything in particular. Of course, I will continue to visit this store in the hopes of finding what I seek. After all, I am forever the optimist. read more

While I am now a former employee of HalfPriceBooks, my experience with them predates my period of employment by a number of years I've had great experiences at all HPB locations, including the Round Rock location. They have some of the best prices, even over Amazon and rarely more than Chegg. From textbooks to recreational reading, the staff are very patient and accommodating. If they ever don't have something on their shelves, they will check other area stores as well as the national chain to see if what I need can be ordered. HPB is by far my favorite chain of physical bookstores. read more

I've been there three times now and each time the checkout girl acts like a kid in China will die if she smiles. I don't get it. This is a great Half Price Books location. I don't know if it's better than the other ones in the Austin area (I've only been to two of them), but I know they have a good selection and helpful staff. The organization of some of the books is a bit confusing (it took me years to realize that there are completely separate sections of the store for e.g. paperback vs. hardback fiction, paperback vs. hardback horror, etc.), but if you're looking for something specific, you can always ask an employee and they'll do their best to find it for you, or even order it for you from another location, if they don't have it there. It's also a great store for browsing, since there are always lots of interesting and unexpected books, and you can often find a lot of cool stuff in the clearance section at the back of the store, too. read more

This last time I took books in they said I could leave the store while waiting for my offer! Woot!! I only take books maybe every few years but this last time they said I could leave as long as I would take whatever they offered. I didn't care, I was moving out of Pville so it was take them to Goodwill or get my $5 at Half Price haha. But you know what? THIS TIME I GOT $20!!! Hahaha It only took like 3 big boxes of books ;) Btw they told me books on ADD/ADHD fly off the shelves so you get more for those. So if you're in the mood for Happy Hour at Sonic, take a couple of your ADD books and get you some $$ ;) So I'm sorry to say but 3 stars. They rarely have any book I'm looking for and they just aren't as cool or have the selection as my favorite location by Frys. BUT since it's our special needs son's #1 requested place to go to, I'm very glad they have a location near us. Except that we just moved so now it's like 20 minutes from us haha. One more thing, if you're new to Austin you have to go to Half Price. It's our cool, used bookstore that pays us pennies on the dollar for our books but then we can buy each other's books for a lot less than B&N and the atmosphere is way better :) read more
