This place has it all. There is so much music to be consumed at Piranha Records, including records, but also a ton of random music-related tchotchkes. One of the best selling points and features of Piranha is that for every $20 spent, you get a $1 wooden coin back, so you get a 20:1 ratio of money back on all purchases. It may not mean much, but after stockpiling 15 wooden coins and blowing them on a record, the feeling is unbeaten. The staff is humorous and great. After Record Store Day last year, I pulled up after failing to grab a copy of the Blue Notes Alts n Ins record, and the owner gave me props for grabbing it because he personally thought it was one of the coolest releases in the collection. He asked if I had come there just to buy it or stumbled upon it. I told him I was seeking it out, and I got the nod of approval. Best day of my life. I do not think this record store has much of a purpose to visit if you are deep in Austin, since independent stores in Austin have pretty similar stock, but living in Hutto and for the people in Round Rock and Georgetown, this is a great spot and a place I love to support. When you walk in to this place and walk the aisles, you find that this store tries to be all things to all people to the point where it is a distraction. You find everything from religious candles, rock T-shirts, incense, laser disks, drinks, socks, hats, accessories, lava lamps, posters, sunglasses, CDs, VHS and DVDs, etc, etc....you get the idea. They have a lot more new vinyl than they have used vinyl. None of the used vinyl is sleeved in plastic and they price everything on the back of the record cover. There was some vintage equipment offerings, but not much to see. Next to their checkout counter, you'll find the high dollar vinyl and not far from that are the recent arrivals. If you don't see what you're looking for, they are willing to order it. They even have a couple of boxes on the floor of free records. Had mostly what I was looking for. Got some albums, outer sleeves, and inner sleeves. They didn't have any clamps though. But what really soured my experience was when I asked the guy behind the counter for help. I showed him a pack of paper inner sleeves from off the shelf, and asked if they had any that weren't made of paper. He shook his head and sarcastically said "you want paper that's not paper?" And when I explained that I was looking inner record sleeves that were not made of paper, he pointed at a shelf without saying anything. Overall just very rude, and I don't feel like being treated like an idiot for asking a basic question again, so I will not be coming back. read more

Great vibes and great selection. Has become a staple record store of mine over the last few years. Great variety in most genres. The metal and contemporary sections are always well stocked and carry new releases. I recommend Piranha records for both long time collectors, as well as those just getting in to the hobby (and those shopping for gifts), as the staff is welcoming and the vibe is not pretentious like some of the records stores I've been to in the Austin area. I love records I'm working on my collection. I'm also a mama and a homeschool teacher I realized that the children's records I had captured my kids attention, by the way all have autism. It was a breakthrough and sometimes going old school shows stellar results. The obstacles I faced was that vinyl is now making a comeback and so many are demanding more. I went to Piranha Records because I was looking for Sound of Music, the service was great, Professional and personable. I talk a lot and all the guys that work there showed patience with me that first time. Today I went in to find Trans-Siberian Orchestra Christmas Eve and other stories and Barbara Mandrell Home for Christmas, he found it right away and ordered it for me which I adored him for, in a strictly platonic way. The gems I found were more children's records and there are so many Christmas albums as I write this it is 38 days til Christmas, so if you need Christmas albums this store has it because the gentleman I spoke with is my spirit animal and has Christmas albums that you didn't know you needed to buy. For the non Christmas people there are still gems. The store has a diverse selection, the employees make it worth coming back to; because their brains are epic and they make you feel like you're being heard that's where the personable professionalism was perfected. But the patience my daughter and I were shown, the sweetness, makes me want to recommend the business. If you're not shopping here, you need to start. Just exactly how much do you love DJ Screw? Do you even know who DJ Screw is? The late DJ Screw (AKA Robert Earl Davis, Jr.) was best known as the creator of the unique "chopped and screwed" DJing technique. He was also the self-proclaimed inventor of what is known around the world now as "Purple Drank" (prescription-strength cough syrup mixed with soda). To no one's surprise, DJ Screw died directly from dranking too much Purple Drank on November 16, 2000 at the age of 29. RIP. Nevertheless, Screw's legacy lives on at Piranha Records, which always has in stock his complete catalog of music as well as plenty of merchandise promoting the Purple Drank lifestyle. After reading the reviews I had very high expectations but was pretty underwhelmed. I must say that this is a first for me in all the years that I have been traveling to collect records. Usually the reviews have been spot on. My first concern was the fact that they have a "no returns" policy posted on the door as you walk in. This makes me feel as a consumer that the owner doesn't care about my satisfaction with whatever product they sell. This made me very hesitant to pull the trigger on some of the rarer LPs. If I'm not satisfied with the sound quality or condition when I get home, I'd be "sol". The lighting is poor in the shop which makes it hard to see condition and you can never tell the sound quality until you get it on your home system. At least offer exchanges or store credit. Second issue was the pricing. Pricing was way high in that it reflects the highest range on the used items compared to different online sites and local area locations. Double that with the return policy... yeah, I'm not taking the chance. read more

I spent too much money at this record store to allow this long bearded man to be disrespectful and rude to me. Every time I asked him something he would be rude or condescending. Every other person on the staff have great communication and treat people with respect. This long bearded man could learn from the staff how to treat people and how to be kind to loyal customers. It's a shame you lost a fan and a customer because this old long bearded man. He could be the owner but I could care less treat people with respect, especially your customers. I LOVE this place! I'm constantly here even though I live 40 minutes away. The staff is very nice and helps me whenever I am in need of finding a specific record. There is a HUGE selection of records and every single one I have bought is amazing. This place is like heaven. I'm here so much that I'm surprised the employees don't know me yet haha. Also, recently I bought a new record player from them and the man with the long beard helped me SO much!! He was amazing! He helped me with picking out my next record player that fit my needs the most, and he was amazing to work with when I sold my old record player to him. Staying nearby, so stopped in mid-morning Friday. Looked at everything they had in my favorite LP genres (reggae, international, jazz) and new/used LP arrivals. Good depths and fair prices. Clerk seemed knowledgeable and turntable was playing some choice cuts. Has a record player for hearing used before you buy. CDs were as varied and reasonably priced. They obviously do a lot of business in rap/hip hop too, with shirts and board shorts also. No genre was missing. Not as 'esoteric' offerings as, say, End of an Ear has, but a solid place to crate dig. Recommended if you are near RR. - David in Houston read more

I give this place 4 stars bc I don't like their refund policy. The person who told me this was the owner I presume. He said he didn't give refunds bc he loses money. I get it, but records are not cheap and you wouldn't have a business without the customers who go there and spend their money. It seems like he doesn't really care about customer satisfaction. There are other record shops with more flexible return policies. On the flip side, they have records that I couldn't find anywhere else and plenty of them. I like this shop a lot for the unique bargain finds, but it takes a lot of searching. The new records are mostly expensive more than you'd spend online, but I like to support the stores sometimes and cough up the dough. Sitting in the parking lot writing this and it's funny because I'm not the only person that expierenced the rudeness of the Owner that's bald and has a gray long beard. Went to ask him a question about an album, and if they were expecting to get it, and the way he talked back to me was very condescending, and rude. Rolled his eyes at me. Not friendly it all, and lacked customer service big time. The way he talked down to me, being a young woman as well, not okay it all. Had a horrible attitude. Not a great way to treat your customers when asking a question about records...thats what your shop is....a record store. Piranha is the only record store I give my business to. Incredibly knowledgeable and friendly staff that always greets everyone who walks in their doors with a smile. Every day brings something new and exciting to their shelves. From vinyl to cds, cassettes to back patches, quality t-shirts to bumper stickers, and even the odd modern/vintage video game paraphernalia to incense, there is something for pretty much everyone. I can (and often do) spend at least an hour browsing, and I don't think I've ever left without buying at least one thing. The staff updates their social media pages multiple times a day, showcasing new items that have come in. I think that's super neat and convenient. They also have a nifty "wooden nickel" system in place: for every $20 you spend you receive a wooden nickel worth $1 that can be used for future purchases. Pretty brilliant if you ask me, and they definitely don't have to do something so generous but they choose to, which speaks volumes of their character and love for the music collecting scene. I love browsing through their used records, because almost every time I've found a real gem or two. I've found extremely rare, long out-of-print albums from the 1960's and 1970's. I've also found a bunch of great albums in their bargain bins. As to their "no return" policy, if you understand how fragile vinyl records are, you know how easily they can be damaged. If you don't know how to properly handle and clean them, or if your turntable has a cheap or worn out needle, you will damage the delicate grooves. Every time you play the record, the friction of the needle on the grooves of the record cause more wear and tear. Stick with CDs or other digital formats, if you want to avoid these issues, but for me, I'd rather experience the full audio range and depth that this analog format provides. read more
