Been several time and each time has been magnificent. 1st time we had tapas - all great 2nd time brunch - fantastic too 3rd time - paella There's nothing we haven't tried that has not been fantastic. And while every meal and drink has been memorable, as they say, "para cerrar con un broche de oro," the churros are unparalleled and perfect way to cap a meal. Bedt churros in Austin hands down.
We came here looking for churros expecting a small little shop similar to the take out counter in Madrid. What we found was a full dining area with a side room that was more like a cafe. Tuesday early afternoon, so parking was a breeze and very few customers. We sat down, ordered some drinks, and of course got churros (cinnamon sugar) with hot chocolate. If you do not get hot chocolate to dip the churros in, you are missing out! I thought the churros and chocolate were very good. The churros themselves were not quite as good as San Gines in Madrid. Maybe they fry it longer in Madrid, or the dough is different, or there's something about huddling in an alleyway taking turns dipping in chocolate sauce. Regardless, it was a fun experience, the environment was nice, and you don't need to fly to Madrid. For those who care, this restaurant was immaculately clean. Thought both our beverages (Chocolate Martini and Cafe Catalan) looked beautiful and were pretty good. Not too sweet, but also a little hard to tell while eating churros. We were able to take advantage of the Tuesday $7 Martini deal. If we're ever back in town, their other specials look good.
October has been a month of discoveries! San Gines restaurant was a pleasant discovery as I enjoyed my day off. The restaurant truly mimics a restaurant you might find in Madrid, which is the origins of the original restaurant established in 1894. The restaurant has glass doors and windows emitting lots of natural light. The walls and backsplash are a dewy white adding to the restaurant's ambiance. It also has an upscale feel with white table cloths, extensive bar and modern furniture. Their green curved chairs have the feel of grass bringing life to the room. Nice overall vibe... Now for the food...Jose, my server, offered me the regular, drink and lunch menus. I opted for the lunch menu and started with the beet salad. It is interesting to note that dining orders are fulfilled by their two food trucks on their premises. The beet salad exceeded my expectations, which had nice layering and flavors (taste exceeded the visual appeal). The soft goat cheese contrasted with the crunchy sugar coated pecans melded well together. So yummy...Next, the linguini with cubed cherry tomatoes and tuna was an interesting yet satisfying combination. The ingredients created a palate tsunami. Finally, the churros and chocolate was so delicious. The churros gave me flashbacks from growing up in San Antonio, where churros are pretty popular. In Spain, churros con chocolate is super popular. San Gines churros and chocolate , came pretty close to churros con chocolate, but was not as thick. Please note an automatic 5% service charge is added to your bill.
It's ok. Service is ok. Arrived a few minutes before our res. Seated right away. Took 10 minutes for our waiter to arrive. Not his fault, he was separating a check 15 ways. But the other 3 servers were standing by the door doing nothing. Food is okay. Several of us shared tapas and a pair of entrees. I liked the salmorejo and crudo. Everything else was bland. They were out of the Nutella churros. How do you run out of your signature dish? The HVAC doesn't work very well and there were flies everywhere inside. Cocktails were nice. Parking is a little tight. Priced appropriately.
I ate San Gines churros in Madrid last November and was excited to find out they opened one in Austin, Texas So when I visited Austin, I put it in my things to do list. The restaurant ambiance is very nice with spacious patio but due to Texas weather, it's not ideal to seat outside during summer time. And unfortunately the inside has a much smaller space. Churros was the main item on the list but my friends and I also decided to eat lunch there. Food was ok and the churros are quite disappointed. It wasn't even close to what I had in Madrid. Don't know why since I would guess it has to be the same ingredients. Parking is super limited so if you go there expect to have a hard time finding one especially on the weekends.
This place had been in my list to visit for quite some time, and hubby's birthday was the perfect occasion. The building and decor is very charming. We got seated right away, but waited a good 10 minutes before our server came to fill out water glasses. In his defense, and poor management, he did have to check out a party of 15 with all separate checks. We orders a round of drinks, the Brussels, Octopus and Hamachi. All good, but like others reported, it was missing seasoning to take it to fantastic. Next then linguini, chicken Milanese, the croquets and tomato soup. Chicken and soup were perfectly seasoned and tasted great. Finished with some Churros, sadly no Nutella ones available, and the table next to us got our cinnamon sugar ones, and some Mexican hot chocolate. All good, but then again, nothing that left me feeling "I need to come back soon" Wish we could give 1/2 stars, but since we can't it's only a 2, since it was quiet warm inside the restaurant
I had a great time here! I made an indoor reservation on a saturday and had no problem. The parking is limited but they do have a small lot in front. Our server was very attentive and always refilling our water. The food itself was so yummy, we loved our chicken empanadas, patatas bravas, and spanish bocata sandwich, both took me right back to Spain! I'm sad I missed trying the churros. The pancakes were good but nothing spectacular, I get this is probably not their specialty. Will definitely be back!
Churros were giant (not pictured). I liked the Nutella filled one more than the raspberry vanilla. Happy hour deals are good - $7 beet salad and Brussels (pictured). We also got the spinach empanadas and carrots. Pros: -Spinach empanadas -Beet salad Cons: - Carrots - Brussels were ok Service was fine.
I arrived early in the morning expecting it was a coffee shop but after entering the front door noticed white tablecloth tables and staff dressed to the nines. I completely had the wrong impression in my head but quickly adapted and took a seat at the bar. I ordered a coffee and looked over the menu. The staff was super nice and friendly and suggested I should order the Classic Churros with chocolate so I did and selected cinnamon sugar ones. It a very elegant place with both indoor and outdoor seating. They are also pet friendly so next time will bring my baby girl. At this early hour I was the only one dining here but there was a steady stream of people coming by picking up orders. Parking was not a problem but there is only a few spots in front so either take a chance or ride share. The coffee was served in a beautiful handcrafted mug and had tremendous flavor. Churros arrived and sat six long sticks with a cup of warm chocolate, They had tremendous flavor especially when dipped in the chocolate. I quickly fell in love of this place where had a great experience and eager to try other items on the menu.
San Ginés is a Spanish style cafe located on South Lamar that specializes in tapas or shared plates as well as fresh golden churros. They have indoor and outdoor patio seating options. We were seated in the outdoor patio that had fans to keep us cool and a very relaxing atmosphere. Service was very attentive and friendly throughout the meal but the dining experience was a bit laid back and slower paced like a typical Spanish meal. Started the meal off by trying the red sangria with spanish red, brandy, orange liqueur, cinnamon, apple and orange and white sangria with Spanish white, tequila, pineapple, peach and cava. The sangria could have used some fresh fruit or more fruit flavors. We shared Pinchos or bite sized toasted baguettes with your choice of three toppings. We ordered chorizo with crushed tomato and pork tenderloin with Brie cheese. These were not my favorite because the baguette overpowered the other toppings. The chorizo was a bit too spicy and the tenderloin was overcooked. I also tried the spinach empanadas that come with an order of 2 with spinach and ricotta filling. I added the cilantro sauce which was out of this world and so flavorful. I ordered the beet salad with roasted beets, arugula, goat cheese, and candied pecans. The salad was very fresh and flavorful. My friend ordered the tortilla espanola, a Spanish omelette served with garlic aioli and house salsa brava. This was more like a brunch option in my opinion but was still very tasty. For dessert, ordered the infamous filled churros where you choose from your choice of three fillings, we tried dulce de leche and Nutella. The churros were warm, crispy, and filled perfectly inside for a sweet ending to the meal. Great place to sit back, and relax for a shared dining experience.
Austin gem. Perfect for fall and sunset to sit outside for a late night sweet bite. It is such a cozy vibe and the interior is good vibe as well. They have cocktails inside and outside you can order the churros and chocolate in a mobile food truck. Lots of outside seating and inside seating is limited but it's spacious. They do have a bar area seating. Service was great and fast.
I came to San Gines for their happy hour and had a great time! They had plenty of options for only $7. I opted for the red sangria, and my friends picked one of the frozens and a dirty martini. Having tried all three, I would say their drinks are pretty strong. My sangria wasn't as strong of course, which I prefer, but I loved it. The cinnamon in the sangria also added a nice touch. For the happy hour food options, we ordered the croquettes (which I did not have as they have ham), the Brussels sprouts, and the potatoes. The potatoes were good but I'm not sure I'd get again, but the Brussels sprouts were perfectly crispy and in a honey (slightly spicy?) glaze. So good! I loved. The ambiance is also so clean and open, really makes you feel like you're in Spain. Our host was also incredibly kind and on top of everything. Would definitely come back for happy hour!
Food - 3/5 Service - 5/5 Ambiance - 4.5/5 We only came for the hot chocolate with churros so take this review with a grain of salt. I would be willing to come back and try the other food in case that's any better. The churros were hot and light and crispy but the hot chocolate was not so great in my opinion. I got a very sound sense of the cornstarch or whatever was used to thicken it more so than the chocolate itself. I think higher quality chocolate would have helped - I also found it sweeter than traditional Spanish style hot chocolate. The service was impeccable and the atmosphere was very cool, especially as they seemed to be hosting some sort of mingling / dance event! Only minor issue we had on the patio was bugs. Definitely would come back to check out any other events hosted in this space.

This review is for dessert and happy hour only. My husband and I came here for happy hour : dessert. I got a chocolate martini and the husband got a dessert drink. We also ordered churros and dipping chocolate. I love how the space is so beautifully decorated and warm natural light peeks in the windows. Good churros and good drinks. I would totally come again! This is even better than my San Gines experience in Barcelona Spain! This place feels fancy whereas in Barcelona I felt like I was being rushed to order and eat. If I come again I want to try the entrees and other real food. read more
I'm not a churro connoisseur, but these are the best churros i've ever had. When ordering the classic churros, I recommend pairing it with the hot chocolate. It's not the same without it. The stuffed churros are also really good but the classic is personally my favorite. Our server Roberto was very friendly and attentive. He checked in often to ensure we had everything we needed while paying close attention to the timing of the food coming out. Really beautiful place with indoor and outdoor seating. I like that the bar opens up to the outside, which gives the space a really nice flow. Limited parking *I recommend making reservations in advance read more

Got some coffee about an hour after opening. Didn't have any issues finding parking, however the lot is very small so could see this being a hassle during busy times. Service was friendly and quick, but my $9 16 oz latte was really about 12 oz. The picture I took was without taking a sip. Yes, on me for not saying something. While yummy and well balanced (not overly floral) hard to rationalize a $9 flavored latte. Inside seating was very fun and vacation-like. Didn't get to peek outside, but am curious how the food is, so will be back to try it, will skip the coffee next time. read more
I've been twice now. Once for coffee and chocolate-filled churros and once for happy hour apps. It's a very lively and lovely outdoor space. There is a very small indoor section in case it rains. Music is fun, but not crazy loud Euro disco ambiance or anything. Churros are made to order so plan to wait about 15 minutes if you order them. They are known for their chocolate that has been centuries in the making, so definitely order that with your churros or in your churros if you are up for a splurge. The beet salad and the croquettes are huge portions! And are half off for happy hour 4-7 Monday-Thursday. Bring friends. This restaurant has only a few locations across the world so I was excited to check it out without going to Madrid or Florida. read more
San Gines has been on my list since it opened but I finally visited after finishing dinner nearby for some churros and drinks. It was a bonus that there was live music. The space itself is really nice - open and airy, while capturing the Spanish feel with the textured tile and mimicking the green from its Madrid location. The interior space itself is not that big - it has a few tables and the bar and cashier but it seamlessly flows outside to the more spacious patio. After ordering up front, seating is self-serve, with food and drinks being delivered to you by the number card and stand they give you. Sitting back in the patio, you really do feel transported and you don't notice the South Lamar hustle and bustle. This on a beautiful day that isn't scorching would be an optimal place to be. I was sad they didn't have a Tinto de Verano on the menu. Maybe when it's officially summer but I know they should have the ingredients to make it regardless. I opted to try El Tinto Sour this time, which does feel like a mix of a whisky sour and tinto de verano, just poor sour than sweet. I actually thought mine was too sour so would have preferred more balance. I was originally planning on getting the regular churros with the cup of hot chocolate but the filled churros were calling to me. I tried the dulce de leche and the raspberry vanilla cream. The raspberry one was nice, tart and not too sweet but the dulce de leche churro was the clear winner - indulgent and satisfying in the best way. I noticed upon leaving that they have Happy Hour, weekdays between 3-6pm. I appreciate an early happy hour giving flexibility for a late lunch / early dinner. The menu covers a good variety of $7 bites and beverages so I am definitely looking forward to coming back for it. read more
Came here for dessert. We ordered half and half (half cinnamon sugar and half sugar) ($8 for 6), they ended up coming half cinnamon sugar and plain, but nbd. We had to get the hot chocolate to dip ($5.50). These were so good, they were fresh and crispy, had a little too much cinnamon sugar but lowkey that was good because the plain ones needed some! Chocolate is SO GOOD, it's so rich and definitely a sauce texture more than an actual hot chocolate. The patio was so cute, I definitely want to come back for their happy hour! read more
I love the vibe of this place! It's very European and classy. We went for their happy hour and ordered two drinks with patatas bravas. The patatas came out pretty quickly within ten minutes but our drinks took......45 minutes. We went up to the bar twice asking on an update and were told twice "they were working on it" which felt a little condescending. After the 2nd time, we were brought a small bowl of mixed nuts. Ended up getting some croquettes once the drinks were finally there. They were so crisp, flavorful and paired well with some creamy sauce on top. The same goes for the patatas bravas that were golden crisp and addicting. Drinks took too long, and were honestly not strong at all- felt like I was drinking a mocktail. While this place is very cute, and a good spot to hang out, lack of service and wait makes it a no for me to return to. read more

This place is very cozy. It has such cute European vibes since it's a Spanish tapas spot. They serve tapas and drinks, but I specifically went to try their churros with thick hot chocolate... and wow. The churros were delicious perfectly crispy on the outside and soft inside. The hot chocolate was thick, rich and perfect for dipping. So good. I also tried the tortilla española and the calamaris and they were okay The service was also 10/10. Everyone was kind and welcoming and the overall atmosphere was so nice. I would definitely come back to try more things on the menu! read more
Wow!! This was easily one of my favorite places I visited in Austin during the week. I'm honestly surprised this spot has a 3.7 star rating because it's a solid 5 stars in my book. If you're looking for a chill vibe with that true Austin feel, this place is a must. The outdoor seating, cool bar, and overall atmosphere are on point. The service was great, and the churros are everything. The cinnamon sugar on top with the hot dark chocolate for dipping is a must when you come. The plain churro was my favorite, but the stuffed one was really good too. I'll definitely be back the next time I'm in town. read more
Loveee the vibe of this restaurant/cafe! It's perfect for grabbing a sweet treat or dessert after dinner with friends. I got the cinnamon sugar churros + chocolate to dip it in. I found it to be kinda pricey at $15 total but it probably wouldn't be bad at all if I had shared it with friends - plus it comes with 6 churro pieces. The chocolate is really yummy - it's the same as the drink. Our servers seemed to understand English but only responded back in Spanish which was interesting - good thing I can understand some Spanish! I'm wondering if it was by design because it is a Spanish restaurant. I'd love to come again during happy hour and the outdoor patio in the back looks amazing. read more
We died and went to churro heaven. No joke. We had an order of two filled churros to share. They were big and filling. We had one dulce de leche and one raspberry vanilla cream. Came with a huge mug of chocolate for dipping. I should have asked for a spoon to house the leftover chocolate sauce. Everything was really good and fresh. Honestly, I didn't get a good service. I have been to the San Gines in Madrid and I loved it. So I thought of trying out the same place in Austin. We went on a Friday evening to taste the churro plate and spinach empanada. We received the empanada after 10 minutes of ordering. After 25 minutes, I wanted to check with the waitress on the status of churro plate and she mentioned it usually takes 25 to 30 minutes to get the churros to table after ordering. The people that came in after us were all served and I decided to check again. So the waitress returns with a muffin mentioning it's taking some time to get the churros ready. This is when we understood she never put in an order for us before. Extremely poor service! Highly not recommend! read more

You have to visit!! San Gines is from Madrid and we are so lucky to have one in Austin! I was hesitant on trying this given the low rating on Yelp (low for my definition is below 4 stars). But, it definitely deserves 5 stars!! I went during happy hour (everything on that menu is $7) and got to enjoy a variety of tapas plus their popular churros with warm chocolate. I've never had churros this thin and I loved the texture. Chocolate is also so silky and not too sweet-just how I like it. Croquetas are so good and probably my favorite tapas. Patatas bravas (potatoes) are so filling and I love their spicy margarita sauce. Slider looks normal but it's really delicious. Also got Belgian chocolate ice cream! The pastry we got (forgot what it's called, but you can see all the pastries at the order counter) was yummy! This surprisingly was the last thing to arrive but it's because they warmed it up. If you want your churros stuffed with Nutella or other toppings, they have those too but not with happy hour price. Sitting outdoors when the weather outside is nice is a must! They have indoor seating too. You wouldn't believe you're still in Austin. It's located in the back of the area so you cannot hear traffic much and the music that's being played is at the perfect level for good conversations. Didn't need a reservation and just walked in. You order and pay first. We got seated at a big white table and it was so relaxing. Service was spectacular as water and napkins were filled consistently. Some of the servers don't speak English but we got by with my limited Spanish :) Limited parking spots in their lot but you may also park in the neighborhood streets for free. We left happy and full. San Gines Austin delivered an outstanding happy hour dinner with my girlfriends. Every single dish, whether from the happy hour or main menu, was beautifully made and bursting with authentic Spanish flavor. This place is a total departure from the over salty fare at the other Spanish spot down the street. The highlight was easily the croquetas from the happy hour menu (don't miss them!), and the drinks were great too. We finished with the stuffed churros, which were pure happiness. So glad there is one in the US now! I've enjoyed this establishment overseas. We got a couple of the churros, the regular with chocolate sauce and ones filled with Nutella. I'll say that these are quite large so if you're a small party plan accordingly. I preferred the nonfilled ones over the Nutella filled. The cinnamon sugar was also pretty good. I don't think you can go wrong with any options though. There is ample seating in the back and the tables are pretty large. Our party of 4 was comfortable here. read more
Yikes. I really wanted to like this place, but there is a lot lacking and I did give really candid feedback to the wait staff. Starting with the good, this place is pretty. As soon as you walk in, it's open and airy. Lots of windows letting in a lot of light. It is a bit loud and echoey, so you'll have to raise your volume a bit. There is a small parking lot available. The food, on the other hand, had its ups and downs. The beef empanada was delicious and packed with flavor. For $12, it is a tiny portion though. The calamari was nothing to brag about; it's your standard fried squid with a side of aioli. The Spanish omelette was a heftier portion and I appreciated the side of toast. It was fluffy and filling. It went downhill with the baguettes. All the baguettes were too toasted, meaning they were rock hard and difficult to bite into. The salmon and cream cheese just tasted like your run-of-the-mill lox bagel. The pork tenderloin was overcooked, thick, and really tough. Not biteable at all, and no seasoning! Brie itself is very mild on flavor so the combination did nothing. The manchego with guava paste was a joke because they only gave us the manchego part and didn't bother informing us that the guava paste was all out. There was nothing special about the manchego. Overall, a so-so experience. Not sure I'd bother making the trek again for mediocre food. read more

I recently went back to San Gines with another friend, this time during the week instead of the weekend, and for the purpose of some WFH over coffee, breakfast, and churros. Parking was something I was initially nervous about, since the last time I visited it was a bit of a challenge. However, it looks like the restaurant has recently added several more dedicated spots. Combined with coming on a weekday, this made parking much easier. Both of us found spaces without any issue. We each ordered coffees, which came out quickly, and then both tried the croissant sandwich. This was surprisingly tasty. Definitely not something I've ever had in Spain (for context, I'm Spanish), but I love a good breakfast sandwich and enjoyed it. We also ordered churros (4 for $9) and asked for half sugar, half cinnamon sugar. Unfortunately, our order was forgotten, and after almost an hour we asked about it. An employee brought them right over (all cinnamon sugar, not half and half), but they were still delicious. We're flexible people, so it didn't bother us much. I want to give a special shoutout to the staff bussing tables and refilling water. They were incredibly attentive and kind. My water glass never got less than half full before it was topped up. Really impressive service! I was also happy to see that San Ginés offers free wifi (username: sangines2072, password: Trapote2), which was fast and reliable, making it a great place to WFH for a few hours. All in all, San Gines continues to be a charming spot with excellent coffee, food, and service. Between the improved parking situation, friendly staff, and cozy atmosphere, I'll definitely keep coming back. read more

Beautiful decor and great food/happy hour!! We went for their hh (2-6 weekly) and ordered some food and drinks and had a great time. Service is order at the front and sit where you want with order number - quick and easy! Tapas on happy hour were $7 - we got the croquetas and patatas bravas and two sliders Also ordered Gambas off regular menu We LOVED the sliders and the patatas and gambas!! Croquetas were good too but not the best I've had in town personally but my husband did love them Some drinks are $5 for happy hour too! Pretty good octopus here. Very soft and fully cooked texture. The tapas were also okay but the pork was the weakest of the 3 being a bit dry and unseasoned. I would have much ordered another fish, ham, or chorizo than the pork. Beer selection was very small. Nice out door seating. The indoor seating felt like a bland coffee shop so we decide to not sit in the AC because of that. read more
We came in for dessert after having dinner elsewhere. The place looked packed, but we were sat pretty quickly. The service was quick and attentive. Despite being in the middle of a hectic three-way intersection, the restaurant feels like a surprisingly chic, modern, European-inspired escape. We ordered the churros and chocolate, they were delicious! To drink we had a "Meet me in Madrid" which was so good, and an Americano. When they brought out my Americano, the cream was delicately frothed, this small touch made it feel unexpectedly special. read more
