After reading their initial reviews, I was hesitant about visiting, but I think they've worked out all of their kinks after opening. We had a really great time visiting San Gines. We ordered two chocolate martinis that were delicious. Their churros were thin but long, and the chocolate dipping sauce is rich, so we could have split an order of 4. The patatas bravas and croquetas were also tasty. The spot is quite vibey too with dim lighting inside. We visited on a Friday evening and they had an open air bar, an indoor section for seating, and a patio section. There were a few fire pits in between tables outside. When you arrive, you order everything at the first bar to the right. They give you a number and they bring the items to your table. The order came out relatively quick and we opted to sit at the bar. After being invited by the manager, Valentina, and hearing some good feedback from friends who went recently, I decided to give San Gines another chance. I'm glad I did. I found out most of the (bad) staff from the opening weeks is gone, and I was pleased with the new staff, who was welcoming and nice. The place is just as pretty as it was, but now it's not overcrowded, you can find some good seats inside and outside. The drinks/coffees are all looking delicious, and the pastries are from Teal House (you can't ever go wrong with them!!). I had the chocolate latte and really liked it. I tried the three huevos plate, and didn't love the texture of the chorizo but everything else was very good and price is reasonable ($15 for a big plate). I was too full to give the churros another try, but I will go back and get them on my one (aka not being offered them, and staying impartial). I tried out San Gines a few days ago, and had an overall pleasant experience! My friend and I originally went to try the churros, but we also came on a Friday evening, and were hungry enough for some savory food before diving into just churros! Parking is not too bad, but it can be hard to turn into the lot if you are driving at night since the area is not super well lit (like most of Austin). The space itself is relatively small, but with how the seats are spaced out, it feels like you can fit a lot of people into the space. And when we were there, there were plenty of patrons, but getting up to go use the restroom felt kind of awkward since I bumped into some chairs on my way. To start off, I had a sparkling water and brussels sprouts. My friend had a Spanish omelet which she thoroughly enjoyed. I wasn't a fan of the brussels sprouts as they weren't crispy, and were more chewy in texture. They also came out in a huge bowl, and it felt weird just eating a large bowl of mediocre brussels sprouts for dinner...also, $21 for Topo Chico and brussels sprouts? It was definitely on the overpriced side. The churros were not bad though! $8 gets you four skinny and long churros to dip into liquid chocolate. I would have liked it if the chocolate had been sweeter. The churros were light and had a soft crispy texture to them, especially with the added cinnamon sugar. Next time I have a craving for churros, I know where to go, but I think I'll have dinner elsewhere next time. read more

visiting from out of town and my friend and i were looking for a nightcap and craving a cocktail and dessert. we came here not expecting the vibe to be so upscale casual, but it ended up being perfect. the staff really made it though. our server roberto was super helpful and made the whole experience even better. the general manager alberto came by as well; you can tell he genuinely loves what he does and really cares about both his guests, staff and overall environment.. churros and cocktails were 10/10, and they do live music on wednesdays and thursdays which makes it such a perfect nightcap spot. will definitely be telling everyone about this place and can't wait to come back! read more

A stylish spot straight from Madrid! The indoor space is cute, and the patio is always lively with a great vibe. Came in for breakfast and had the croissant sandwich with avocado, bacon, and egg (I skipped the cheddar cheese). The croissant was perfectly crispy and packed with delicious filling -- so satisfying! The matcha latte was pretty standard, nothing special. Now, the churros were amazing. San Gines is such a cute spot and I am obsessed with their patio area! I used the live fairly close to the this location when they were doing construction but ended up moving before they opened. I waited months and was finally able to make my way back to try the churros I had been dreaming of. We ordered the cinnamon sugar pretzels with dolce de leche sauce and it was fine. It didn't live up to the hype in my head. To give you some context, I am a simple girl who loves me some Costco churros and these were nothing like that. I assume these are more authentic (they were thinner and felt slightly oiler). Again, this is a personal preference and I'd still highly encourage folks to come try it for themselves! I love this place! Located right on South Lamar, they even have a small parking lot. When you enter you're greeted by the bartenders. I have only visited for happy hour and dinner, but you order at the bar and then they bring the food out to you. The inside is simple and comfortable, but the back patio is amazing! You are totally transported out of a busy main road in Austin. The service is extremely friendly. They have a great happy hour! Glasses of wine for only $7! I got the tempranillo and my guest got the sparkling wine. We shared patatas bravas, brussel sprouts (I had these both visits and they are amazing), and croquetas. Everything was very cheap on happy hour and is still a full sized portion. Don't leave without trying the churros! Looking forward to going back in the day time for coffee and breakfast. So amazed that we got a San Gines! I have been to the one in Madrid and was so surprised to see they were opening one up here. Parking - I was fortunately able to walk from my house but there is some on site parking, though I imagine during peak hours it will be tough. Ambiance - what a beautiful job they've done with this space! The interior is gorgeous but I was blown away by the how spacious and beautiful the patio is. Such a vibe. Service - this was the only thing I didn't love, but I imagine a lot of it is because they're new and are still getting into the groove of things. Its unclear what you can order from each counter (ex just drinks on one side of the inside bar, not the outside, churros at the cart) so often people would line up inside just be told to go order elsewhere. Food & drink - I got the classic churros and hot chocolate combo and it was divine! I want to come back and try more of their pastries as well as their paella. Maybe I hyped myself up too much for this and set expectations too high, but as Obi Wan once said, these were not the churros I was looking for. They were either overcooked or left out for too long, leaving them quite hard. The chocolate dipping sauce was the only bright spot. My friends and I have been waiting for this place to open for almost a year now, and we finally got to try it the other day! When it first opened, I saw that it was super crowded, and it was definitely still crowded but we didn't have to wait at all. I also had no issues finding parking in their parking lot out front. There are indoor and outdoor spaces, but unfortunately it was raining when we went so everyone was crowded inside. When you first enter, you can place your order at the counter before grabbing a seat. There are four separate menus, listing coffee, breakfast, lunch/dinner, pastry, cocktail, and of course churro options. We decided to try: - Cafe Catalan (2/5): This is a double espresso with lemon zest, milk, and bruleed sugar. Honestly, it just tasted like espresso. If you're looking for an interesting coffee, I would recommend the San Gines Choco-Latte instead, which tastes like a mocha. - Churros (5/5): This was easily my favorite part of the experience. The churros were brought out with our coffee, and you should be sure to enjoy them while they're still fresh! One of my friends is from Spain, and she showed us her favorite way to eat them, which is to order them plain and get sugar on the side to dip them in. The churros also came with a small cup of hot chocolate to dip them in, which was super delicious. The hot chocolate is not like the hot chocolate I normally see in America, which is mostly milk. It was super thick, almost like melted chocolate with just a little cream. The churros were crisp on the outside and fluffy in the middle, but quite oily so grab some napkins! - Tortilla Espanola (4/5): This was our favorite savory dish! It was mostly egg, similar to an omelette with potatoes and onions inside. I enjoyed the salsa it was plated with, which was just a little spicy. The portion was perfect for the three of us to share as an appetizer or for one person to enjoy as an entree. - Huevos Rotos (3/5): This is like a Spanish breakfast hash, with jamon, chorizo, bell peppers, eggs, and potatoes. I appreciated how much jamon they included, but I wish the potatoes had been crispier. I live around the corner and watched as this was being built. Having never heard of San Gine's, I googled them and the video/website looked awesome, so I was eagerly awaiting their opening. While this location looks similar, that is where the comparison ends. There is no hustle and bustle, no eggs and pancakes or salmon bagels, however, they do have a good looking bakery case. Parking is limited, but they do have quite a bit of seating options, albeit, outdoors. The inside fills up quickly particularly since the weather is cold outside, so I suggest you put your belongings down before you stand in line to order. After checking out their very limited menu, I ordered the tortilla espanola, the san-gine choco-latte and cinnamon sugar churros. I asked if I could let him know when I wanted the churros, because I wanted them later and he said that was fine. The barista was very sweet and allowed me to try a sample of their hot chocolate and it was delicious, so I was very excited for my latte. Once you order, they give you a number to place on your table so that when the food is cooked in the outside food truck, they bring it to your table. I did not have to wait long for my coffee that ended up tasting rather bland and I swear it was missing the chocolate. The tortilla espanola was pretty to look at, but taste-wise, it lacked any seasoning so it was just ok. I had only been eating my food for 10 minutes when the churros arrived! I was not happy and being that the waiter did not speak English and my Spanish is limited, I just dealt with it. I have never been a fan of churros as I have only ever had the Mexican kind, but these were delicious with and also without the side of chocolate sauce for dipping. I may stop by again in the evening to see if the menu is different and maybe try a cocktail or two, but with Proud Mary's and Loro across the street and so many other amazing restaurants in close proximity, it will not be anytime soon. read more

My son and I came here 30 minutes before closing. Low light---parking space is horrible and unsafe on the corner lot after the light especially--still not enough space on the next lot. Unable to get in long line for drinks because of no parking but my son was able to get churros with chocolate dip. They're not bad but not astounding. Cute backlot with umbrellas. You order at the counter and get a number and a wait person brings it to you. They're also very quick to pick up empty dishes. Place a super clean. It's also spacious with dining area inside in a large outdoor area. Most of us went for brunch type items like eggs, avocado toast, but some elected some of the tapas like the shrimp which was plump and savory. Most had coffee and a few of us had hot chocolate. There are two types of hot chocolate, the Spanish and the American. The Spanish is more like pudding. I understand this is the way I served in Madrid and you dunk churros in it. The patio is spacious and has a wide variety of seating options for groups or duos. I came at 3pm on Saturday on the first (or maybe second) day they opened. It was very full but I was still able to find a seat pretty easily since there's so much seating. I skipped the coffee/drink line inside and came straight outside to get in the churro line. The drinks line was a bit long and I'm not sure how long it takes for drinks to come out. They had multiple menus: one for cocktails, pastries, snacks, and coffee. The line for churros was pretty short, only a few people in front of me. Orders come with 3 and chocolate, you can get them with sugar or not. sit only took a few minutes for my churros to come out. They were crunchy and the chocolate was rich and light without being too thick. It was a fun little snack to have after a meal. They have a lot of staff to serve the churros and they are constantly cleaning to keep the place neat. It was pretty cute here! I'm looking forward to returning and trying the chocolate martini. My sister brought me here as a surprise - a cute looking cafe with churros and chocolate and only one other location in the US and comes straight from Madrid. I really wanted to love it, but unfortunately it really did not meet the mark. Firstly, the location is awful to get to/park at and it has a cute vibe that does not fit with the surroundings at all. I understand that this is out of their hands in some ways, but it ruined the atmosphere for me. The outdoor back patio is quite nice with bright colors and various seating areas, but chairs placed on black rocks that cause a lot of wobbling and flies everywhere. The drinks you can order at the inside counter, but churros and tapas you order at the two food trucks on the patio, no signs whatsoever to lead you, so my husband got in one line and was told it was the wrong one, then had to get in the other line. They have quite an overpriced menu for order up service and drinks called "lattes" that yes, in Europe probably are considered lattes, but in America is not what one thinks of when they order a latte - one shot of espresso in a tiny cup with some condensed milk. They were quite bitter and not very appealing. We had a chocolate croissant that looked lovely and laminated and crisp, but the minute I bit into it, there was butter oozing out of it with every bite, and not in the good way. Not enough chocolate either. And the one thing that I wanted to be really good, the churros, were some of the worst I've ever had unfortunately. Good hot chocolate sauce (how hard is that really), but thin, stale tasting churros with none of the gooey richness on the inside that I was looking for.
