Went for a quick lunch today with family. The ordering was easy and the counter person was extremely nice. This is an outdoor venue and that may not be to everyone's taste. The birds are aggressive and even to a nip out of my wife's sandwich. Not Lou's fault but will scare you if you are unaware. Been driving past Lou's on the way to Rockman's quite a few times. Caught my eye was the sign for Burger, so here I am. I went for the Classic and fries. You get the beeper and hang out for a bout 10 minutes, the beeper goes off and you are excited. Walk up to the window and get your bag of delights. (Now this is when I question tipping). Went around back and sat at a picnic table to get on with this burger. It was good, not great. A bit like an overcooked and oversalted burger at your friend's BBQ. I am sure people love this place. It's been a few years since I've stopped here for food, but I'm happy to report that they have not dropped the ball. I got the chicken wrap and a chicken sandwich and was delighted at both, but I think the wrap beat it out by a hair. The Mushroom and Provolone burger was SO good. It is made of steak, and it is moist stays in tact as you pick up the burger but steak melts easily into your mouth and is tender to chew. Pairs so well with honey mustard. Bread ratio is high as it is thick but bread is soft and not difficult to bite into at all. To my surprise, rotisserie chicken was ALSO tender and easy to pull apart, not dry at all. Also pairs well with honey mustard. The wait was lengthy and there were a few people in line when we got there around 7/8 in the evening. A lot more space in the back (10+ picnic tables and a ping pong table) in addition to the seating in the front of the restaurant. You can park on the side of the street if you keep on heading straight by the restaurant (free after 7pm). We could've sat in the heavily shaded back but opted for a somewhat shaded bench seat in front. Drink: 4 I went with a bourbon & lemonade concoction. It was good, not great. While I generally order an old-fashioned, a beer may have gone better with my burger, I'll let you know next time. Food: 5 The mushroom & provolone burger gets a solid 5+ stars. You know it's so odd to me that I've never reviewed Lou's! I've been going to this location for years, long before moving to Austin. It was always one of our "must stops" on our bi-yearly visits. There's a reason for it. The drinks are fabulous. Whether it's a cocktail, coffee, or something else, the drinks are always refreshing and tasty. The watermelon and basil aqua fresca is hands down my favorite n/a beverage on the menu. The horchata (n/an and adult version) is killer! Here are my other favorite things: Frozen marg Cappelletti spritz Mexican mocha Cobb salad Pulled chicken sandwich (aka Lou's famous chicken, as they're known for serving up the best of the best when it comes to chicken meals & sandwiches.) We were there for coffee and breakfast - so I can not comment on the quality of the bartending. But all signs are this is a first rate establishment. * * * Two key points to clear up: a) Lou's is working with negligible kitchen space. They have the equivalent of a smaller than average Dairy Queen to do all their cooking. Implication: The menu is kept quite small. You get a small number of breakfast tacos, a small number of sandwiches, a small number of bottles at the bar, one flavor of frozen custard etc. They simply don't have room to store the other ingredients. But what they serve is top notch and well executed. You are going to get primo stuff even if you only have two or three choices within the category you want. b) You are sitting outside. The End. Fortunately they use their corner lot effectively and well to create a lot of different attractive sub-spaces with distinctive looks and feels. A lot of their grounds are covered - since in Texas when it rains, it rains hard. Both fans and heating equipment abound. Leisure activities about too. Want to play jenga, cornhole or listen to a band? They are ready for you. * * * At breakfast, the food and coffee are excellent. They do a first rate espresso. I had two different breakfast tacos - both of them named after people. Both were much-better than the much-ballyhooed tacos at nearby Cuanto's. All the tacos are crammed with multiple ingredients that combo together well. This is not always the case in our town. Many Yuppie taco places have random thrown-together ingredient lists. This leads to a lot of tacos with ingredients That that feel like they are going to a party with the wrong crowd. One particular bacon-y concoction stood out for me, But I liked everything I had. * * * Lou's is too far away from where I live to be a breakfast staple for me. Driving too far before one has had one's coffee Is a good way to ruin one's day. But if I lived in the Southwest Quadrant of the New East Side, Lou's would be a very interesting addition to the weekly schedule. My mom and I visited Lou's for lunch after an event downtown. It's an outdoor spot with a walk up ordering window. They have quite a few tables with umbrella shades. This place was so cute I can't believe I've never been here. I also want to say that it was kind of deserted. It was Saturday on Memorial Day weekend and they had parking in their small lot and gorgeous amusement style fan misters all over the place and not a lot of folks. Fair warning it was 102 outside but not unusual for Austin. Anyway because of this, there wasn't a long line and the ordering window and I got a delicious Greek salad and side of fries and I devoured it. Fries were so crispy. I loved that the pink lemonade was customized for me with less sugar so it was a lighter pink since they make a raspberry syrup, so just ask if you want light sugar. I hung out under their shaded misted awning for like three hours catching up with friends and before I left ordered Richard's Rainwater and a vanilla custard that tasted like freaking sweet cream and whipped cream. My daughter and I went to Lou's last Saturday. We were trying to decide where to go when I mentioned chicken and my daughter said there was a place she wanted to try. It was close to noon, there were people ahead of us in line, but we did not have to wait long at all for our food. They have outdoor seating. Some tables had an umbrella, some did not but it was such a perfect afternoon that it was really pleasant eating there. The chicken tasted great and the dipping sauce was really good too. My daughter and I never eat a lot at lunch so we split the chicken strips basket and it was more than enough for the two of us. They have a separate window if you order ahead which is really nice, because then you don't have to wait in line to pick up your order. I went to Lou's for the first time this week for their Wednesday night trivia. So fun! My partner and I met up with some friends and tried our luck. There is plenty of outdoor seating out back, and even though it was cold out, we were ok with the outdoor heaters and the fire pit. Plus, Lou's has blankets that you can just ask for at the front. We got drinks, and I was happily surprised at the amount of options, as well as the quick service. There are staff constantly walking the outdoor area collecting glasses as you finish them. Trivia started at 8pm, so we had already eaten dinner by the time that we arrived, but I did see some groups enjoying burgers that looked delicious! I'll have to try those next time. There is a parking lot attached to Lou's, but it was already full by the time we arrived. We ended up finding free street parking 1 block away, which was perfect. Since that was my first time there, I'm not sure if that's normal or if that was more of a one-time thing, but either way, always check the surrounding streets if needed (or just get there a little earlier). read more

Came on a Tuesday with friends who have been raving about Lou's. Their menu is pretty extensive, so I tried a little bit of everything. I ordered the Eastside Crunch Salad with pulled (rotisserie) chicken, fries, and a salted caramel + Oreo crumble milkshake. The milkshake was perfection, thick in all the right places if you know what I mean. I'm glad the salted caramel sauce wasn't too salty. I think the $1 upcharge for each topping (Oreo and salted caramel) was a bit high for the portion. I'm not sure I had a $9 shake. All of the food took longer than I expected and neither the fries nor the chicken were hot when it came out (I am a stickler for hot food). They tasted fine but weren't as warm as I would've liked. The (white meat) chicken was on the drier side I thought, but I liked the salad and the dressing. The green sauce was good. We hung out for a bit and they were showing a movie on the rear patio which was cool. Overall I think the food was decent and a good portion (albeit pricey -- I spent $40 on just myself) but nothing to rave about. The staff on the register and making drinks deserve raises! So glad I found this place!!! I was at a business conference and the nearby spots were packed, so I decided to drive a bit away and found Lou's. Thank God for per diems! I got the prime rib, roasted potatoes, Brussel sprouts, onion rings and corn ribs. There is no indoor seating, but it has a great patio setup and there was a DJ the time I was there. The cashier was SUPER mice in explaining the dishes - the prices were great. And the taste..... YESSSS!!!
