My "secret sushi" spot in the Gateway Shopping Center - still going 12 years strong after a name change (formerly Haru) and pandemic later. To start, their Gyoza and Caramelized Brussels Sprouts are prime examples of items often seen but enjoyed in a new way. They have my favorite Specialty Rolls in town - filled with top quality fresh fish, original flavor combinations, and the sweet/spicy combo my palate prefers. "Land & Sea," and "Kiss Kiss" are 2 I love to rotate depending on my mood. You cannot go wrong with a variety of fresh fish served in generous portions served in classic but delicious ways, accenting natural flavors. WOW, I was really impressed with this place. I came here honestly not really expecting the level of sushi that I got. The Toro and Santa Barbara Uni were noticeably just so high quality. The uni was a vibrant orange. I was talking with my friend when I first took a bite of the Toro, and literally had to pause the conversation with how surprised I was by its texture, truly feeling like a piece of Wagyu. It was overall just so much sashimi as well for the $42 price tag -- you could honestly split it with someone. They also had a gluten-free menu and provided gluten-free tamari, which was appreciated. read more

Stopped by Ichi Umi Sushi for lunch...ordered avocado roll "to go". My order was ready when I arrived. My avocado roll was delicious! It had fresh pieces of avocado and sharply cut. The brown rice in it's raw unbleached state. I was surcharged $2 for the brown rice. For those rice lovers, brown rice takes longer to cook, which is likely the reason for the upcharge. Came here for a birthday and we had the best time! The table we reserved was ready when we got there. The Apple and lychee martini were great. We ordered things like the tuna tower (amazing), California roll and vegetable tempura (which was also amazing)! Apparently they have an early happy hour too. Our waitress was also great! You could tell she was busy and running around but we had a great experience and for a lot of people, she did great! The inside wasnt super decorated but it was clean and had a lot of tables. HINOKAMI KAGURA! After watching the demon slayer infinity castle movie with good ol Daniel Shen (Daniel^2), I was inspired to get more in touch with Japanese culture. What better place to do so than at Ichi Umi Sushi! I came here with Daniel Jung (Daniel^3??) Well, anyways, I almost cried after the first bite. Cried from grief and pain. How could anyone possibly live without having tried the Sashimi bibimbap, or the Nagasaki Champon Udon, or the Chicken Karaage?!? The portions were so amazing, and the flavors brought me flashbacks to the time I was watching tanjiro eat some good noodles in the entertainment district before meeting up with zenitsu and inosuke. A couple weeks ago my son picked up food from Ichi Umi. I've eaten there several times in the store and have always enjoyed it. The food was ready on time, packaged nicely, and all tasted fresh upon arrival. I was glad to have the option to order in that day as I had some family friends coming over. My aunt is 80+ years old so being able to eat delicious food at home so it wasn't too noisy for her was a nice way to gather. I look forward to eating at Ichi Umi many more times! read more

The staff were absolutely wonderful -- super attentive, kind, and made the whole experience feel personal and easygoing. The food was really good and felt like a great deal for the quality. We got the Sake Toro Bento and the Nagasaki Champong Udon. The fish was fresh and nicely presented, and everything came out quickly. A standout for me was the Nagasaki Champong Udon -- it had that deep, satisfying umami broth that beautifully blended the flavors of Japanese udon and Korean seafood jjamppong. Love the dim atmosphere, perfect for date night but not ideal for that perfect foodie shot! Flash camera needed for sure! Service was 100, attentive and friendly. Nice sushi spot tucked near the Arboretum/Gateway. It's next to Simar, and kind of hidden from the highway. Quiet ambiance, but delicious sushi. Friendly and quick service on a Wed evening. We ordered the Crimson Baby, spicy salmon and Lucky rolls. Also ordered some uni, A5 Wagyu, king salmon and Otoro to try out. The Wagyu was a touch too done for me, but it was ok. I dream of the chirashi bowl from here, it is THE BOMB. The portion is generous and well worth the price tag and the seafood in it is always super fresh. When I'm in town I make sure to stop at Ichi Umi just for the chirashi bowl at least once. This place is popular but the service is always good and friendly. My wife and I went back to Ichi Umi Sushi, formerly known as Haru, while visiting family during the holidays and unfortunately it was a disappointing experience. When this place was Haru it was hands down our favorite sushi spot in Austin. We craved it constantly and talked about it even after moving to California. The rolls were always flavorful well balanced and memorable which made this return visit something we were genuinely excited about. Right away the menu felt overwhelming. It used to be simple and now it is extremely long and difficult to navigate. But the bigger issue was the food. We ordered several of our old favorites including the Wildflower, Black Widow, Crush on You, Foxy Lady, and Redwood rolls. The Redwood and Foxy Lady were okay but still not what we remembered. The rolls were noticeably smaller than before and lacked the depth of flavor they once had. The Black Widow, Wildflower, and Crush on You were the biggest letdowns. The sauces and spicy mayo were overpowering and in some bites overly spicy to the point where you could barely taste the fish. The balance that made these rolls special before just was not there. The Wildflower in particular used to be incredible with its mix of mango tuna salmon soybean paper and orange miso sauce. This time it completely fell flat. The Crush on You was inconsistent from bite to bite with either no goat cheese or too much of it dominating the roll. I am not sure if ownership changed or if something else happened but this no longer feels like the Haru we loved. That was honestly the hardest part. This place held a lot of great memories for us and it was disappointing to see such a drop in quality. I hope they can find their way back to what made this spot special because it truly used to be one of the best sushi spots in Austin. Unfortunately this visit just missed the mark for us. read more

The reviews seemed promising, but slightly fell short. Service was okay, was asked by several people at the host stand if I had been helped then walked away, I requested a booth so I could finish some work, I was sat in their "half booth". The furniture was dark and imposing, with high-backed leather booths and glossy wood tables. Another table was sat after me and got helped before I did, by the time I was asked what I wanted to drink...I knew what I wanted. The Kanpaccio and Sunset Roll as my meal. Kanpaccio is something I would skip, the description sounded so refreshing. Enough to share for a taste, the fish was a healthy slice. The sauce was very strong and overdressed, too sour and needed something that wasn't tart to balance it out. The Fuji apples tasted like ginger. Couldn't taste the garlic chilli oil. Sunset Roll seemed simple enough with salmon, avocado and mango then topped off with more salmon, ikura and miso sauce. I prefer my salmon served pretty cold, this was warm. Could have been from the hot rice used, but again you can see in the photo I started to pick it apart. Was this mango inside?? Came off as pickled radish. 3.85/5 TL;DR food is mostly good, service is a bit slow but the staff are very friendly. IchiUmi holds a special place in my heart as one of my tried and true sushi go to spots. The interior is very cozy, the restaurant is always clean, and even when it is busy it seems as if it's never too loud. When you come, expect to wait longer for food and refills. While staff is very nice and professional it always feels like the restaurant is understaffed. On to the food now, on this visit we had a FEAST, we got the shiso combo which came with the udon salad, Agedashi tofu, Brussels sprouts, and a mix of nigiri and sashimi. We also got the toro trio, seaweed salad, karaage, and four extra pieces of eel nigiri. Let's start with the appetizers. The seaweed salad, udon salad, and karage and dipping sauce were good. The Brussels sprouts and agedashi tofu weren't bad but weren't up to standard. The Brussels sprouts weren't as crispy as I wanted them to be. It felt like they took them out of the oven and left them to sit in the sauce for a hot minute. There were like one or two nice pieces but most left me wanting that crispy texture. The Brussels sprout sauce was also not evenly distributed. It felt like there were some pieces that had no flavor. The agedashi tofu was alright, similarly to the Brussels sprouts it was a bit too soggy on the bottom. I think that if they put either the sauce on the side or brought it out right away it would have been a 10/10. The udon salad completely shocked me. I went in to this expecting not a lot from it but was completely blown away. Everything about it was so fresh and light. I loved the contrast of textures with the noodles, cucumber, bell peppers, shrimp, and lettuce. The dressing really enhanced the natural flavors of everything and helped to tie it all together. The only thing missing from this is avocado lol. Still would highly recommend it. The toro trio was good, hamachi collar sashimi, otoro, and salmon belly. The otoro is definitely the star of the show and easily my favorite part. The other fish were good but it's hard to beat the otoro in terms of taste. I am a little sad that at the time of this review they only give 21 pieces versus the 24 posted on their website. With that being said do I think this is worth the $99 price tag? Maybe not. I think I personally would prefer just to order everything a la carte BUT I don't think it's a bad introduction to these cuts of fish if you're in a larger party and want to try a little bit of everything. The shiso for the most part was good but there were at least 5-8 pieces of the 20 nigiri that had WAY TOO MUCH wasabi. As someone who isn't the biggest fan of the paste it was a bit overwhelming(please note that most nigiri they do add wasabi to it to enhance the taste of the fish in this case though, it was super heavy handed). The sashimi cuts were nice, thick, and had good flavor. As we were finishing up our shiso boat the staff took the hamachi collar back to the kitchen to grill it for us. The collar was great as sashimi but even better grilled. Seriously do yourself a favor and try it out the next time you go. read more

Tucked away in the Gateway shopping center off 183/360. We frequent here the most out of all the sushi places around. They have the best tuna (hon maguro) hands down. It melts in your mouth and topped with fresh wasabi. They have a lot of unique options to choose from. The ZENSAI appetizer is always a hit. Unknowingly we've been to Ichi Umi twice since we've visited Austin on two separate trips since they changed their name, and the food and service did not disappoint. Definitely take a look at their today's special board near the bar as I totally missed it while ordering. Ichi Umi (I remember formerly at one time was simply called Haru), is always my goto spot if I'm in the cravings for some nigiri or speciality sushis. Even better with friends to show off the "sushi boats" they offer. Atmosphere: Modern looking sushi spot, with clear view of the sushi chefs making the meals. Plenty of seatings at bars and private rooms. Food: I've tried from them many don bowls, nigiri, sushi, and even some of their bento boxes. All have been excellent, it really depends on what you are wanting or craving. I highly recommend any fish related dish such as nigiri or sushi. Nigiri always comes out with the perfect amount of salt and ponzo to get that right amount of savory. Service: Every time I've gone service is hospitable and helpful. No complaints. Sometimes you need your "go-to" spots for places to take friends when not wanting to venture out too far. 3.5 is where I'm at. We went in for lunch and they have a very large menu, a happy hour menu and a lunch menu all with great prices. With these great prices, the sushi quality sits around the same. Nothing too bad but nothing fancy either. We got the zen zen roll, spicy salmon, and yellowtail roll. We also tried the salmon belly sushi. The salmon tasted very fishy so I would not recommend that. The best thing we had was the zen zen roll which was actually pretty spicy and had hot cheeto dust on top. The spicy salmon roll was ground fish which is my pet peeve so that wasn't my cup of tea. The interior is beautiful and they have really great service! Everyone is very nice and accommodating. I'm a bit of a sushi snob but this place was not bad at all for the price. By the time I got the Ichi Umi I was starving and came here because it was pretty close. A friend had ordered me some sushi from here but had never dined in. I recalled liking it but at the same time I didn't want to go much further. I walked in and got seated promptly-it was a weekday and that weird greyzone where it was way late for lunch but too early for dinner; that time some restaurants just close before the re-open. It was quiet with maybe 2 other tables so our server came right to us took drink orders and since I was hungry just ordered the escolar right away. The owners are probably Korean since they had Hwe Dup Bap, which is like the Korean version of Chirashi but more complex. I decided on that for my main while the escolar came out. The escolar was great, not overly fatty and the ponzu was balanced just right. The hwe had a good variety of fish and a quail egg-which is a nice touch, not too much of a gochujang kick but overall very good.
