Best hidden gem sushi spot in Austin. I hesitate writing about it because I want it to stay hidden, but as a foodie I cannot help but give praise. Keep in mind that locals know and love this place, so Friday-Sunday nights will need a reservation. Lunch is much more tame. I personally like the fast but friendly bustle of a popular eatery, and they are popular for a reason. If you aren't tempted by the offerings on their menu, they do rotating chef specials in sashimi or nigiri style. Last night my trio did both and were treated to absolutely decadent and culinarily exquisite combinations of flavor. Even on such a packed night, our waitress was still welcoming, helpful, and engaging, ready to offer recommendations and going over each course in detail. We were seated right away, and our server took our drink order promptly while we decided on our meal choices. We got seaweed salad and tempura asparagus to share as a starter. I very rarely order tempura, and now I'm wondering why. It was delicious. For our mains, we each ordered a role and a selection of nigiri. This is some of the best sushi that I've had in Austin. Its not too far from where I live and I'm so disappointed in myself for barely figuring out it existed. My husband and I had a date night to the movies and I picked this place randomly for dinner before we headed to the theater. A new friend suggested we meet at this place for lunch. They had had good lunch options that were not outrageously priced but also you can't substitute anything. I got the sashimi option and asked if I could have salmon instead of tuna roll, but that wasn't an option. I like tuna, but I prefer salmon. The sashimi was tasty and I like they gave you 3 kinds in addition to the tuna roll. The lunch special also came with a crunchy sushi and miso soup. We were seated quickly and because it's located in a mini shopping center, there was ample parking even if you had to walk a bit to get to the restaurant. We did have to flag someone down to take our order even though all the tables weren't full but once we did the food came out quickly. Love coming to this place everything is so good. You really can't go wrong, sushi, sashimi, dumplings, even the mochi ice cream. We always order so much, I walk out of there stuffed. Every time I try to pick out something different, and I'm never disappointed! The service is good, but I feel like sometimes they come a by a little more often. The food here was great -- I'd give it a solid 4/5. The specialty rolls were definitely the highlight, especially the "Ex-Girlfriend" roll -- so good! We also tried the lychee sake, and it was delicious. We started with the dynamite appetizer, which was just okay, nothing special. The ambiance was really nice too; it was cool to watch the sushi being made right in front of us. The only downside was the service -- it honestly wasn't great. This is the spot for sushi in Austin. Definitely on the more expensive end however if you want what I find to be the same quality as Uchiko at half the price then this is your spot. You cannot go wrong with any of their nigiri or sushimi. My personal favorites are the fatty salmon and Yellow Fin Tuna. Also important to note they do have a certificate highlighting they source their fish from Japan which is great to see. Shows you're paying for quality. If you're new to some of the dishes here definitely talk to the waitress, all of them are super knowledgeable and friendly. I finally tried this place. You must make a reservation ahead during dinner time and peak days. Call ahead otherwise you may be turned away or waiting for an hour or more. I was really excited to try this place. I had a reservation and was seated at the bar in the corner. I was ignored for a good 10 mins before I was able to get wait staff attention. It basically feels like you'll be neglected if you aren't a regular. I opted for the sushi dinner which includes 8 nigiri pieces and a choice of tuna or California roll. Maybe because it's a combo deal but the nigiri pieces were cut awful. The quality of the fish was not great. For $30 you'd expect better quality. I also opted to get another roll and additional nigiri pieces. My diner in total was $60 so it wasn't cheap. Not sure the quality is worth the price imo. read more

The restaurant was actually pretty busy, and the parking lot pretty much full. Our waitress was so kind and offered helpful advice since we were first timers. She even suggested an off menu item called "Spicy Samurai" ($20) which has tuna, cucumber inside, with Serrano pepper, and yellowtail on top, with wasabi and yuzu juice- based sauce - so good but has a spicy kick. The fish is top notch (love their King Salmon, hamachi toro and aji!!!!!), and their rolls are HUGE!!!! My favorite roll is on the secret menu, called the triple D roll. It's succulent and just perfection in a roll. I love that they have kizami wasabi available, too. The atmosphere is intimate, small, but also loud. The only complaint I have is the time limit on table reservation. Depending on the day/time, it can be 45 mins or an hour and a half. I just don't like feeling rushed. It's hard not to ask people sitting by you what they ordered as the food looks and smells so good. We have only ordered rolls to go. This place is just next to the St David's and gets a lot of traffic from moms that just had babies. You're not supposed to eat raw fish while pregnant so after each baby my wife (and apparently others too) want their sushi fix. This place is insanely good.
