The girl taking my order was friendly and even double-checked if it was an allergy--I told her no, I just really don't like mushrooms. But when I got home and started eating, everything in that dish tasted like mushrooms--or at least had that same gross, slimy, squishy texture. It's a very convenient spot to eat if you are going somewhere after on Red River! Inside feels warm and cozy with unique decorations. The service is always friendly and prompt. You order at the front and they bring you your food. I had the Shiitake Tofu dish and my friend at the Japchei (sweet potato noodle) dish. A bastion of denizens downtown in search of health, balanced, and affordable meals, the inclusive pan-Asian menu made sure there was something for everyone at the table. The Rice Medallion Saute was a staple for almost 20 years, serving as lunch for office workers and late night meals for bar hoppers alike. Tofu was treated with respect here, a prime protein rather some sad alternative, enlightening many Obake Bowls, Bibimbap, and my personal favorite, the Shiitake Tofu. There wasn't any indoor seating available when we initially arrived, so they offered us bug spray to borrow if we chose to sit outside, which was such a kind gesture. This was a really great restaurant experience with good vibes and food, but the raspberry milk tea I got was unfortunately so terrible that I cannot in good conscience leave a five-star rating. I was so enticed by the $4 price for bubble tea, which is something I am not used to seeing these days. I saw they had a raspberry tea, which I thought was unique. I thought it was going to be like a normal fruit tea, but when I ordered it they asked me what milk I wanted in it. I chose oat milk at no additional cost, which was very nice. Unfortunately, the drink tasted horrendous. I really like boba, and I tried to keep sipping it, but the taste was so appalling. My friends tried it, and they agreed it was unpleasant. They said it tasted like cough medicine. My friend got the passionfruit tea, however, and it tasted normal. It was good. For my meal, I ordered the rice medallion sauté with chicken. I enjoyed it, and the chicken was really tasty and not dry at all. The noodles had good vegetables and a tasty sauce. The portion was large, and I took a good amount of leftovers home. They also have a complimentary vegan miso soup that you can serve yourself from a pot. It was such a fire miso soup, even with it not having any fish broth. Discovered this restaurant while exploring downtown on foot and was pleasantly surprised. Service was really fast and the workers here were nice. They even had miso soup on the house! Definitely a hidden gem in Austin. Everything tasted great and the portion sizes were pretty big. I got the pan seared ahi tuna! It was delicious($14)! You can choose how cooked do you want it (rare, medium, well done). I chose rare. The initial taste is a steak-like seasoning that makes the fish taste more meaty but then the aftertaste is more like sushi. I was surprised by how big the ahi tuna was! It was a decent size, which I really appreciate. The dish also comes with purple rice that is flavored with ginger pieces and a refreshing salad. They give you two different sauces, a soy sauce-based one and a spicy one. The inside decor is a mix of Korean and Gothic vibe. The service was fast and everybody was very friendly! My friends and I were looking for something quick and light to eat in half an hour in the downtown area, and I'm so glad we found this place! We arrived just after they opened at 11am on a Thursday, and there were some other groups dining as well. We got the japchae with tofu ($11 + $2.50 tofu) and 2 summer rolls (total came out to be $27). The food was served in less than 10 minutes. The rolls were very refreshing and delicious when eaten with peanut sauce that we asked for. The japchae noodles were cooked to the perfect texture and came with a spicy bibimbap sauce that went well with the savory noodles. Interestingly, all the vegetables were buried at the bottom of the bowl, which I would have personally preferred the veggies on top but that's me. I've been meaning to try this spot and finally did! I got the bento box with teriyaki chicken and a spring roll. It came with a pork dumpling and it was easily the best pork dumpling I've had in my life (and I've tried quite a bit!). That was the best thing in the box. My chicken was sooo salty. The food here is delicious. I was in Austin for a conference, recently, and this restaurant was within walking distance of the convention center. I had the Pan-Seared Ahi Tuna (cooked medium at an employee's suggestion even though I normally eat it rare), miso soup, and peach ginger tea. They give great portions and the food was delicious (I didn't take a picture before I dug in, unfortunately). I was also eyeing the Lemon Pepper Papaya salad, so I decided to go back again the next day. That was my absolute favorite and I added salmon to make it more filling. The restaurant is quaint with indoor and outdoor seating in the heart of the city. The service was great and they gave me a complimentary miso soup the next day, I assume because I either came back two days in a row or because I brought new folks with me the second time. My vietnamese friend warned me never to eat in a restaurant not run by natives from the country the cuisine derives from and i tend to follow this advice. I forgot to follow this advice and instantly regretted it eating at Koriente. I ordered the dumpling-pork belly bento. The dumplings tasted worse than the frozen ones mass made from an industrial manufacturer somewhere. The pork belly if it really was pork belly was pale and flavorless. The broccoli was cold and flavorless too and the same is to be said for the vegetable spring roll. That spring roll was so dry and did not come with any dipping sauce that would have imparted flavor and made it easier to chew and swallow. I know it is wrapped in rice paper but chewing it was just like chewing paper. The order comes with some self serve miso soup and that soup was the most sour miso soup i ever tasted. The place is rather old and rundown and while its a fully self service restaurant (you pick your own menu from the shelf, serve your own soup and water and pick your own utensils and paper towel from the dispensers) when it is time to pay with your card, they have the card reader requesting for a minimum tip if i am not mistaken of 18 percent. Tucked into the corner of a one-way street and 7th Street, I got luck and found parking in the back. They have a variety of fresh salad bowls and Boba tea. I love Koriente. Heads up, there's no indoor seating and outdoor seating is limited. Your best bet is picking up your food. You can order inside or w/ the QR code at the tables outside. The outside area is kinda cramped, but kept clean, mostly by the customers; I guess everyone is considerate like that. I've only been here twice, but each time the staff has been friendly and willing to make a recommendation. Let them know you've never been here before and they'll definitely help you. You can get your food with regular rice or "rice medallions," these are little round tteokbokki for anyone familiar with Korean food. I always get the medallions because they cook them perfectly here. The texture is amazing. You can also ask for a side of spice and get a little container of spicy sauce. A local friend sent me to Koriente, an Asian-inspired, no-frills shop on the edge of downtown. Since the building itself doesn't stick out, it's easy to miss unless you look on Yelp and see the 1,000+ reviews and 4.5 star rating. I went for lunch on a Monday afternoon and walked right in. I ordered the milk tea boba and a rice bowl with egg and shrimp. It came with each component and sauce on it's own and I mixed it together. It was so flavorful! It also came with miso soup.
