First impressions: This place is a little pricier than other places, but it's right downtown, so it's to be expected. They are serious about masking up here, and they do not offer any dining in or outdoor dining - only takeout. I think this is a good thing! Upon eating the food: We ordered the miso honey glazed mahi mahi and the obake bowl with egg. The miso soup that came with the meals were bland AF. It was like drinking water with some stuff floating around in it. We wondered if they used miso at all. I'm Japanese; my miso soup standards are a little high, but this was the worst I've ever had. On top of that, they used nori (dried seaweed that's usually wrapped around sushi) instead of wakame (the seaweed that belongs in miso soup). What even is that??? For the main entrees, the proteins (fish and chicken) were good quality cuts of meat, and they were seasoned well. They tasted good! However, the mahi mahi fish was supposed to be miso honey glazed. Again, where was the miso??? It may have tasted good, but I didn't taste the miso at all! What is going on?! It's like they ran out of miso that day. Then the veggies that came with the obake bowl were flavorful and cooked well. However, the veggies that came with the miso honey glazed mahi mahi were just microwaved with no seasoning nor sauce whatsoever. Obviously, I had complaints about the mahi mahi item, but the obake bowl was good. Except, where was the egg??? It was an obake bowl with egg. The egg wasn't even there. I don't understand how this place has good reviews... I don't leave bad reviews often (see my other reviews if you doubt me!), but this was frankly just pathetic. The last icing on the cake was their portion size. If you're going to charge the amount you charge for your food, even if your location is downtown, you don't have to skimp! I'm in Texas, I want to leave a meal feeling full, not wanting to go order a burger somewhere afterwards. This place might be a healthy option, but I wanted to eat something that was really delicious and filling. Both requirements were lacking. I was in Austin for work and picked Koriente to eat based on the reviews. I was staying at the Fairmont nearby so I decided to walk there - in hindsight I regretted this decision. I did not feel safe walking in that area. I was glad that I was with two other colleagues (male and female). If you're nearby- I'd Uber or drive there. I should have read the reviews more in depth because I did not realize their indoor dining area is STILL closed due to COVID. At this point (March 2023) it seems like it's just due to the fact that they don't want to operate a sit down operation. Overall it was a huge disappointment because the weather that day was cold (50s) and raining. The waitress at the counter wasn't friendly or welcoming at all. There weren't many other options in the area so we felt stuck and shuffled out to the back patio to mobile order. Food wise- I had the Koriente Curry (A) it was decent but I wished I had ordered something else. It was very potato heavy and I'd hoped it would be more veggie heavy. The portion was a very nice size and I finished the second half at a later meal. The dumplings were really good so I do recommend those. The miso soup was soso. Incredible food! I got delivery from here for lunch. Everything was prepared ahead of schedule and packaged well. I ordered the Shiitake Tofu bowl. It was fantastic. It comes with tofu in a garlic and pepper-based sauce. The tofu had a good consistency and was topped with rich, savory mushrooms. The bowl also included spinach and cabbage. They offer a lot of customization options, which I loved. I added crispy jalapenos and a fried egg. I also asked for avocado but they forgot to include it. The toppings were delicious and gave the bowl great texture. You can customize your carbs too. They have rice and glass noodles or you can get a combination of both to mix it up. You can also specify your spice level and I went with extra spicy. Overall the dish was fresh, filling, and extremely flavorful. I also ordered edamame which arrived piping hot and well prepared. The food is delicious here with reasonable prices. Each item was around $13-15. So there is zero indoor dining with about 6-8 tables outside on the patio only. Dog friendly, we brought our 2 pups. There was 1 outdoor heater and we got lucky and sat right next to eat. We order on the app, and the food came out quickly within 10 mins of ordering. Food was hot and in to go containers. This restaurant is amazing! I have celiac disease and so it's often hard to find places to eat but the guy at the front had a whole separate gluten free menu I could use. It was incredible feeling just like everyone else dining there and not having to pester staff with questions about my dietary needs. I ended up getting edamame and the okabe bowl B and both were delicious. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the large amount of chicken on top carried on down through the bowl. Amazing amazing stuff, full compliments to the chef. - Mango lemonade: Super refreshing on a hot day but of course had that mild artificial syrup flavor of mango, worth it though. I love the patio vibes and was definitely happy to sit outside and eat such a delicious meal with some nice weather. At Koriente, you can have it your way, and without guilt, because 1) they actively encourage you to customize your food the way you like it, and 2) everything here is cooked fresh and you can taste the difference! I love that all the regulars have their go-to orders, but it's actually different for every person. This speaks to the consistent quality of their menu, across the board. And as an added plus, they have self-serve miso soup available during lunch time (when dining in). As I said earlier, everyone has different preferences at Koriente. But some of my favorites are the Spicy Chicken or Obake Bowl A with half-rice-half-noodles, and topped with a fried egg or fancy mushrooms (oyster & shiitake). The food is fantastic, the building is small, and the surrounding area is over run with the homeless! We were early arriving and Koriente was not open yet. We went to look at the bridge and water and I immediately noticed all of the homeless hanging around. The area below the bridge smelled like a sewer and one of the homeless warned about going down there. He said "ain't nothing but homeless, human waste, and drug dealers down there... don't go." The more I looked around the more I noticed just how bad it was... it was like they were bubbling up from the ground. All of a sudden they were seriously everywhere. I'm not intimidated by much... but I had my kids here, my family, and we were in the thick of it. We turned and went to the front door of the eatery and waited for the place to open. There were a lot of people coming for opening time. It got real busy quickly. You order at the counter and then they bring it to you. The inside is small and there is a back patio as well. The menu is different... with lots of options. They do have a limited selection of bottled beer and wine. The rest of the drinks are all tea based or soda. The food was awesome! What huge flavor! The dish I got was spicy... bordering on flipping hot! But holly cow it was good. My nose ran and my eyes watered but all I wanted was more. It was truly good food! We had our whole family here... cousins, aunts, uncles and grandparents... we almost took up the whole place. And the line kept forming... from the second the door opened till when we left people just kept coming. They also informed us that their bathrooms were out of order and if we needed to use the restroom we had to go down to the corner to a bar... which, when my kids did have to go and we went, walking through the homeless gauntlet, it turned out to be a nasty stinky bathroom that seriously reeked horribly! It was disgusting... but when a kid has to go... The food was delicious... however I would not come back here early again with my family... nor would I come at dark. Did not satisfy... I got the spicy rice medallion sauté, miso soup, and taro boba milk tea. The sauté dish was quite salty and lacked depth of flavor. It tasted as if random ingredients were thrown together. I would not get the dish again. The miso soup tasted bland. The boba in the milk tea were clumped together, I could not drink it. As a Korean-American, I was disappointed with my experience. It was not what we were expecting... the indoor seating area is closed because of COVID, but the patio is first come first serve. The service was very meh--rude waitstaff. Their QR code menu wouldn't load for any of us and it wasn't clear if we needed to order via mobile or if we could also go inside to order because of the technical issues. When we asked the waitstaff, he simply told us if you order online, it would definitely be considered takeout. Someone near us said he was told the opposite thing--to order online and just find a seat. Everything was served in takeout containers anyway so we didn't understand why it'd even matter. You're expected to clean your own table, snag your own table, and get your own utensils and water from inside--I resented tipping 20%, but I still did. Food wise, nothing special. The spicy chicken was boring and one dimensional, the japchae noodles were overcooked and bland, and the vegetables were not seasoned. My friend said who ordered the mahi mahi said she couldn't even eat the spinach because there was no seasoning--rabbit food. We didn't understand the rave reviews at all.
