Powder Room is a speakeasy lounge tucked behind the "kitchen doors" of Manny's Sandwich Shop, and it did not disappoint! We came on a Thursday evening with a reservation for 7. Once we walked through Manny's, we were greeted right away and since we had a reservation, we were seated promptly. Quick heads up: cell phones aren't allowed inside -- they take your phone and give you a key to a locker where it's stored for the night. The idea is to keep everyone present and engaged with each other instead of their screens (they do make exceptions for emergencies or on-call situations, at the business's discretion). I actually love the reasoning behind it, even though I wished I had my phone to snap pictures of the inside! The space itself is dark and moody with major art deco Miami vibes, like something out of the 80s-90s. Think pink velvet draped everywhere, a life-size taxidermy leopard in the middle of the bar, and flamingo sculptures scattered throughout. It's gorgeous. There's plenty of seating between the booths/couches and the bar, and they seat you according to your party size. We got a plush half-circle booth with a table that fit all of us perfectly -- great sightlines too, so everyone could see and talk to each other easily. Each table gets an assigned server, and ours was fantastic. We ordered cocktails along with the yuca fries, empanadas, and quesadillas -- all delicious. I can't remember the name of my cocktail, but it was pink, gin-based, and so good, served in a beautiful tall stem glass. I have never experienced such an insane welcome in my life. I made a reservation for 1:30am. Now, I know that is late, but if it's too late for a reservation, you should not make it available for scheduling. The guy at the front was very nice, but as soon as we get to the "receptionist" the entire narrative changed. She looked my girlfriend and I up and down and then proceeded to tap multiple times on her IPad. She then says, "you know it's 1:30? we close at 2. we only have standing room." She had the most miserable scowl on her face. My girlfriend and I were dressed very nicely (pants & jacket, and a dress), so I know this was not a outfit issue. I do not know what her issue was, but if you are tired and don't like staying up late, don't work in a bar. After saying that there was only standing room, I decided that I was not going to spend money in an establishment that speaks to people in such a disgusting way, so I proceeded to leave. One of the guys out front asked what was wrong and asked if he could buy us a drink, but at that point I decided that I would not spend a dime at this place. Just giving a heads up! I honestly want Powder Room to be so good. The decor is cute. The no phone concept is fun. I've been twice, though, and both times had a bunch of problems. I would say 2.5 stars but I'll land on 2. The first time our server was an absolute nightmare. I honestly don't know why she was called to work at an upscale cocktail bar with such a disdain for her customers. I had a reservation with my husband and our other friend and she just seemed to generally dislike us and anyone else she interacted with. No smile, angry. I don't mind people not having a permanent smile, I can have a RBF myself, I get it. But my husband ordered a table side martini and this comes with a personal interaction with getting your custom martini at the table and I promise you there is nothing she wanted to do less with her day than make a drink at our table, and had no clue what she was doing. She was just potion mixing reminiscent of things I did in the pantry as a kid. She didn't know what to ask that he wanted and was just dumping a little of this, a little of that. He tried to make conversation because she's literally there kneeled at our table doing this, and supposed to be asking for preference on the drink, but not really saying anything. He asked "Do your friends always have you making the drinks because you know how to make good ones?" Her response was a deadpan "My friends are poor." Well. That's awkward. We didn't know what to say to that. When she was done mixing things she realized she hadn't made enough to include a sidecar which is part of this custom drink order. So what did she do? She mixed a bit of this and that again from the random pretty little bottles on her tray with no mind to what was actually being concocted and it was 100% different than what was in the glass. It was even a different color. The drinks made by the actual bar were good, but the server was so dismissive that it was just annoying to ask for anything. The second time we had a different server and he was very pleasant and as attentive as he could be, given the random massive crowd that appeared around our 6pm reservation time. The whole point of Powder Room is to relax and have an intimate, no phone experience, and this requires a reservation. For some reason they decided to let in some random 30 person wedding party or something that had no reservations and just stood basically with their butts in the face of all the seated reservations. It was such a loud volume in there that the server couldn't even hear us and brought the wrong drink. We decided it was too much and left. They did apologize stating they didn't know this was going to happen. Well, you have control over letting people in and this was a choice. I was invited by a friend to attend a 1950s-themed murder mystery in The Power Room (back room of Manny's Bar.) My first challenge was deciding what to wear. One thing was transparently clear, I was not about to spend money on an outfit that I would never use again. After some extensive "research" (mainly googling 1950s fashion and perusing my closet), I pieced together a respectable 1950s outfit. Upon entering The Power Room, we were instructed to surrender our cell phones. Wait...what? My phone is essentially my life line. I exhaled as I reluctantly handed over my phone. In addition, the event required a two-drink minimum, and the food options were fairly limited. Our server did an outstanding job keeping everyone's orders straight. Considering our group size, she deserved kudos. Drinks and food were good. At the end of the evening, awards were distributed for Best Suspect, Best Death Scene, and the team that successfully solved the murder mystery. One of our friends won Best Death Scene, proving that if you're going to be murdered, you should at least go out with flair. Now for our team... I was pleasantly surprised by my experience here. My partner and I walked in around 10:30pm and the place was already packed. If you want to sit down, then I recommend getting a reservation. On a Saturday night, walk-ins were standing room only. The inside is gorgeous, and I loved the elevated jungle theming. The drinks were also fabulous. I tried the Garden Party and the Sonny & Cher. Both were winners. The DJ they had that night was good. The no phone policy really encourages everyone to talk to each other. My only critique is that the music is too loud for the space, so you had to speak really loudly to be heard. Reservations seem to be for a guaranteed seat but that does not include comfortability. We were sat with another party and shared a couch. While the couple who was seated with us were lovely people, we were hoping to be somewhere on our own. Where we were seated was also across the bar and all we could see was the people standing around from the waist down. The crowd died down and the seating areas became available but most of the crowd was standing. Not sure if there's a dress code as there was a variety of different attire, from people in birks with shorts to dresses. This casual get up also downgrades the experience. The vibes are great, but I'm not sure they are worth the wait. There are two lines: one for walk-ins and one for those with reservations. We waited maybe 15 minutes at the walk-in line as others progressively started to pile on behind us. Then again, even people in the reservation line were waiting. This is definitely the kind of place that wants you to wait. The kind of place that wants to build a line outdoors to intrigue onlookers. We were treated nicely, but we definitely could have gotten in right away. By the time we walked in, the place was probably at 60% capacity. It was standing room only at the bar, but not overcrowded by any means. There is a dress code, but it's not entirely clear what it is. Some guy dressed to the 9s got turned away for not having sleeves whereas I got in with sneakers and a t-shirt. They ask for your cellphones upon entering and give you a key in exchange, but there doesn't seem to be any security to enforce it if you don't want to give them up. I have no problem with their policy, but I bet a lot of customers do. We were asked to leave our table promptly at the 90-minute mark from when our reservation was supposed to begin; not factoring the time we lost at the table due to it not being ready for us. But it was more important to the Powder Room that the next group got their table on time, apparently. The drinks took soooo long, we got ONE round in, and were asked to leave the table before our second round arrived. They had no issues when taking our second round order while we were seated, but we were asked to leave the table immediately after. This round also took forever and we drank it standing, crowded, in everyone's way. I was embarrassed as it was my birthday, and I was taking a group of 7 other people - new to Austin - here to check out what was one of my favorite spots. We were so excited to check out this secrete lounge. It did not disappoint. Just go through Manny's, the sandwich shop, and you'll immediately see two metal doors right by the refrigerator. Come prepared to separate from your cell phones for an hour or so. Not going to lie, I had to prep myself mentally for a year before coming here. It's manageable. You are encouraged to converse with your party instead of looking at your phones. The ambiance is warm, peach, cozy, not over the top. Feels like you are inside a jungle with tropical greeneries and exotic big cats and birds as the main decor. We got a corner booth with extremely comfortable seats (always a plus in my book!) Great for an intimate dinner date or girls night out. It was on a Saturday night featuring a live DJ who also played a guitar. Music was lowkey Miami night club-ish. Great turnout at 6:00 pm! The powder room stalls are unisex. Service was decent. Though, the servers wore low cut leopard print uniforms. We got our drinks and appetizers pretty quickly. Upon stepping in I felt like I was transported to Miami in the 70s or 80s. Once you enter you turn in your phones making it easy to lose time in connecting with your company. The staff was super nice and attentive our waitress came by multiple times and drinks were good and quick. They have a fun magazine style menu and plenty of options including mocktails. The mocktails were well balanced and not too sweet and my husband enjoyed every drink he tried. We ordered the French fries which were so good the perfect blend of freshness and salt. They have a daily happy hour from 4 to 6 PM where you can get $12 classic cocktails and half off all food items. The vibe is perfect for date nights because it feels very intimate. However, when it's busy, it can get overcrowded and you will likely hear other people's conversations since the tables and chairs are so close to each other. Service can also be pretty slow as well so if you're in a rush, inform your serve beforehand or flag them down when you're ready to leave. We have been here a few times and noticed that their menu has changed. Most of the cocktails we have tried were good. Before the menu changed, we had the Icarus Agenda ($19) and Not a Penny More ($17). There is a pandan drink that is delicious, but the espresso martini is a hard pass. It was very basic with no garnish or foam on top and honestly did not taste very good. Food during happy hour is great for sharing or as a pre dinner snack since the portions are small. We were having a late Friday lunch at Perry's and our waiter told us about this place. We looked up the pics and immediately knew that we had to try it. The front entrance is a place called Manny's. It's a sandwich shop but is the "cover" for the speakeasy. We did not have a reservation but since it was early (around 4) we were there pretty much when it opened. Luckily, we were brought to a table in the corner. We couldn't see the actual bar from where we were sitting but had a great view of most of the place. They have several drinks on HH and even some snacks that were also on HH. We were not hungry seeing as we just came from a late lunch but we could not resist the grilled cheese and tomato soup. It was delicious! The vibe is cozy and trendy. Definitely come dressed to impress. We got "kicked out" of our cool table as there was a reservation. We knew this ahead of time so we really weren't kicked out. Our lovely waitress reserved us two spots at the bar so we were able to have a bar experience as well. Later, the bar turned into more of a club. There was a great DJ and the music was spot on for my taste. Lots of good throwbacks. I would definitely go back again. Quite an interesting spot hidden behind a small storefront, Manny's. I stumbled upon this place by accident after seeing a crowd of people gathered around a place that clearly did not match the clientele. I could not tell who was working there and who was just hanging around so I tried to go in, at which point a woman stopped me from entering the building and asked what I was doing. I asked what this place was and she told me it was the powder room, which I had seen pictures of online, and realized it was more hidden than I thought. I asked if I could go in and she said they recommend reservations, but that I could go in tonight, though she seemed to be trying to dissuade me. I made my way in and there were a few small groups of people still hanging around but it was mostly empty. The aesthetic is very cool, and definitely a warm loungy vibe, but it oddly clashes with the DJ and really loud music. It's like it doesn't know whether it wants to be a club or a speakeasy. It seems like the kind of place to sit around and have conversation but it would be very hard to do so. I got a drink from the bartender. Asked for the cocktail menu, and was given a falling apart magazine. Props for creativity, but it seemed a bit impractical. I don't remember which of the drinks I tried, but they had some creative choices to choose from and I enjoyed the one I had. I went off to the side of the bar to take some photos and was harshly reprimanded from someone on the staff for doing so. He told me they had a no cell phone policy which I had no idea about, I had no problem with it, just didn't know it was a thing. I told him I wasn't aware and put my phone away, and he continued to scold me which was just somewhat ridiculous. After reading other reviews I see people have their phones taken away by the hostess, I was never asked by anyone to turn in my phone. I understand the idea, but in practice that seems a bit insane. Like what if there's an emergency and someone needs to get a hold of you. Informing people and requesting to put their phone away ought to be enough. Let me start by saying that my first experience here was fabulous, which is exactly why I wanted to come back. Unfortunately, my most recent visit was extremely disappointing and honestly embarrassing. I went with two friends, and the atmosphere was completely different from what I had previously experienced. It was very crowded and felt more like a loud bar than a speakeasy. Our waiter was mediocre at best and only came to our table about three times during the hour and a half we were there (there's a time limit). Our drinks were brought by someone else, and I had to wave him down multiple times just to order or ask for water. It was clear he was much more focused on a large party than our table. When it came time to pay, my friends and I decided I would just put everything on my card. After I handed him my card and filled in the tip, he told me my card didn't work and asked the other two girls if they had a card instead. I told him it shouldn't have been declined, but I did have another card, which he took, clearly upset. That's when he told me there was a mandatory 20% tip that had to be added to the bill. At that point, I realized he had lied about my card. I had left a 15% tip because the service simply didn't warrant more, especially for what felt like bar service. He brought this up in front of my friends, who then started asking what was going on. I explained that he was refusing to run my card unless I changed the tip to 20%. Not wanting to make a big scene in front of my friends, I reluctantly agreed, even though I told him it was dishonest. To "make up for it," he later brought me a cookie. After this incident, I called the establishment at least five times and left messages, but management never returned my calls. To make matters worse, the charge from the first credit card, the one he claimed was "declined", was pending on my account for three days. So clearly it was never declined. Very disappointing. It's sad to see such a great establishment allow this kind of behavior from their staff. If you go, be aware. read more

We walked in around 9 PM on a Tuesday night (without a reservation) & it seemed as though we brought the rush in. The nearly empty bar completely filled but the bartenders were excellent at maintaining their composure while still getting drinks in on time. Very impressed with this place. She walked us through the menu like we were VIPs, and when she told us she actually hangs here on her nights off with her girlfriends, I knew we were in good hands. Naturally, we ordered whatever she gets, and it did not disappoint. The cocktails were exotic and absolutely stunning. You don't just drink them--you admire them first like they're little pieces of art. I was with my best friend who recently moved to Austin who's again is a breathtakingly fabulous Mexican/Iranian who turns every room into his personal runway. Not to say I don't slay in my own right, but when we go out together, it's a full production. This place matched our energy perfectly. The crowd was eclectic and sexy, and everyone looked like they either own a yacht or at least have access to one. Now, I would love to give this place five stars, and maybe I will next time, but I have to admit, the vibe felt a little cold when we went. It was either too early or not quite the right night, but the atmosphere didn't pop the way I expected it to. Such a lovely and personable experience. I was here for THREE HOURS but it felt like 40 minutes. CJ and Tyler are an unstoppable and very in sync duo. They made that experience 1000 times better. The music was on point, the cocktails were creative and classic, the room was like being transported into 1970 and was so dark, cozy and stylish. Came in for happy hour (everyday 4-6pm) and stayed an extra hour because I was just having a great time. The drinks I had were the Last Word, San Lazaro and an espresso martini. All pretty solid drinks. The San Lazaro had an infused earl grey gin and a homemade malic cordial but was borderline medicine like but just right for being able to drink the whole drink. My favorite out of the three was the last word. The espresso martini was a good, not too strong drink which sometimes I feel businesses have a hard time finding that balance with that type of drink. This place probably has the best bar food I have personally experienced and all the food is half off for happy hour and 10000000% worth it. I ate the tuna tostadas and short rib quesadilla. The tostada was flavorful and slightly spicy while the quesadilla was good and smoky but definitely needed the green sauce to make it extra delicious. I highly suggest coming here if you're visiting the Austin area. Quite the unique experience and the states need more places like this. Hope to return some day! read more

This was an incredible experience. It was a speakeasy in downtown Austin in the back of a restaurant. It was a good thing we made reservations because there was a long line on Saturday night. The cool thing was that they collect phones when you walk in so it forces the night to be really enjoyed and experienced in the moment. We had a blast at Powder Room this last weekend. It is easy to find inside Manny's, but you are completely transported when you enter inside. It is stunningly beautiful and the vibes are great. I loved their take on an espresso martini. It was delicious, but without caffeine. The only downfall is that it was super busy and the service was pretty slow. We were only able to get 2 drinks each in our 2 hour time slot. Our servers were very sweet, just seemed to be stretched thing. read more

Powder room is just stunning! It is absolutely one of the prettiest speakeasies I have been to in Austin, I was floored by the decor (see Google reviews for interior pics - they have a "no cell phone policy" so I couldn't take any pics myself). The staff also fabulous - Siobhan was my waitress and she was lovely, helpful, and gave great drink recs! Overall I would absolutely rec a visit to powder room; despite the "no phone" policy (they put your phone in a locker at the entrance) it's an excellent experience, and the drinks are super fun. I have been to Powder Room twice now and they certainly have a fan in me! I love a good speakeasy and I believe they do a decent job of capturing that essence. Both times I went, I had a reservation but from what I understand they do offer walk ins as well. The decor is beautiful but some of the tables are quite close to each other. On my first visit, it was very crowded and a lot of people standing (assuming walk ins) in the middle of the aisle. I think this took away from the intimate vibe that most speakeasies are created to be. Upon entering, they do take your phones, so I think this is supposed to give the intimacy back. Our server, Marlon was so kind and gave us a full breakdown of the menu and what it entails. I don't remember the exact name of the drink I got but it was blue, had rum and was delicious. Not sure if it will become my favorite bar in Austin but it has a good vibe, good music (DJ on the weekends) and good customer service! read more
