I really wanted to love this place. They have a fabulous ambiance, great views, awesome music, above and beyond service, and the food was a huge flop. I repeat, I had very high hopes and wanted to love this experience, but I didn't. I want to be fair and give a complete overview of what was wrong with this experience because I feel if everyone else had given an accurate reason for the lower ratings I probably would not have come here so I am going to be very honest. This place has entirely too many good things to have the food be so lackluster. If the food matched the service and ambience, this would be a five star restaurant. I'll break down each item individually and give them each an individual rating. Shrimp tempura - 8/10 the shrimp tempura was good, but nothing special about it. It is as you would expect, hot and fresh with a nice crisp. It tasted like it was made with fresh oil, and the breading was nice and light. Chicken dumpling - 4/10 I was not impressed with this dumpling at all. It felt like it was cooked too high too quick and the inside was undercooked and underseasoned. I took a bite out of one and left the rest alone. I was not a super fan of the sauces either, which I got on the side because I did not want it drizzled over the dumplings so I could rate everything individually. Korean fried chicken - 7/10 I should have read the menu a little more carefully. These are boneless, which is basically just a chicken tender, we got ours with the orange sauce, which was really good but still not quite what I was looking for. The chicken was definitely fresh, the crust was very good, but it was not what I was expecting after having had actual Korean fried chicken. Bento Box - 5/10 everything on this tray tasted like a combination of freezer food and fresh made. The California rolls were very mediocre, the salad was nothing to shake a stick at, the tempura vegetables were really good though. The white rice lacked flavor and the yakitori chicken is not an item that they keep on the menu, but the chef made it upon request and we are super grateful for the accommodation, but it just lacked flavor. That is what makes leaving this review so difficult, the service truly was above and beyond, but the food was a major miss. The miso soup was room temperature and I was not a fan of the flavor. Ramen with chicken - 5/10 one of the main reasons I wanted to come eat here was because they have a large selection of gluten-free menu items. This Ramen is one of them so I was excited to experience gluten-free Ramen without having to take any digestive enzymes but this also came as a major disappointment. The broth tasted like the same broth they use for the miso soup, which I already did not like at all. The noodles had a bit of a Play-Doh texture, they were very strange. I think some rice noodles would be a much better option if they want to do gluten-free because whatever noodle they are using has a very strange texture. I was traveling and did not want to take any leftovers so I just dug out the meat. They also forgot to put the soft boiled egg, but I did not make a stink about it. I feel like the recipes could use a major revamping because there is no reason Joi should not have mind blowing food. I would love to come back and try it again upon seeing a menu makeover or making some adjustments to the current recipes. This food just not have a strong flavor profile.

I tried Joi for the first time recently. It's located at The Domain. I made a reservation, but it wasn't necessary since there were plenty of open tables. They have a great patio, and the inside is furnished nicely. Everyone we interacted with was very friendly and made us feel welcome. It's also a very accessible restaurant, which I appreciate. My husband ordered a mule and said it was well balanced and tasty. We started with calamari, but it came out at the same time as our entrees. It tasted fine at first, but the last piece was slimy, which was off putting. I ordered the shrimp lo mein and liked the flavors, but the noodles were very overcooked, and some were even crunchy, very disappointing. My husband had the sliders with fries and enjoyed them. Our waitress was very nice, but she didn't really keep up with refilling our drinks, so that was another small bump. I'm willing to give them a second try, but the Domain has a lot of good restaurants to compete with, so they'll need to smooth out those bumps to really stand out.

It was a lovely outdoor dining experience. They have a nice dining space on the North lawn of the Domain and we were seated promptly. The food came out quite fast and some of the dishes that were most enjoyed were the truffle chicken potsticker, the lobster taco and the Korean Spicy chicken. The lemon tart for dessert was bright and tart in the very best way. It was my favorite bite of the night and I'm not even a dessert person! We only ordered small plates because that was the vibe we were going for during our meal but they also have entrees listed (we will try next time). They have a nice variety of bar drinks and the whole experience felt relaxed, not rushed, and just lovely. The restaurants around the seemed loud and chaotic but Joi was chill and relaxed. I'd come back for the ambience alone. The service was great. We had a few different people come to our table and they were all excellent. This is a great addition to the Domain. It's right next to Paul Martins, in front of the lawn by the red heart and across from the Apple Store.

When I chose this establishment it was from a recommendation. Unfortunately, I was not impressed with the food. The Korean fried chicken lacked flavor, the shrimp fried rice was just ok, and the French fries were tasteless and did not belong with my tofu pork buns. However, the fried shrimp were perfect. Service was good and the setting was very pleasant. I was really hoping for better.

Food was good, flavorful and served hot, nothing to rave about but it was not bad. I'd probably rank it a solid 6.5/10. The service was solid as well, not bad but not exceptional. The restaurant is very nice on the inside, lots of seating. Would I go again, yes. Is it at the top of my list for Asian cuisine? No. I've been blessed to have been to some amazing restaurants, this was clearly a good and solid restaurant.

    Strawberry tuna roll, hamachi crudo
    Cassandra B.

The restaurant was pretty empty when my friends and I got there. I ordered a passionfruit prescription cocktail, which was tasty. For an appetizer I had the hamachi crudo. The fish was fresh. I had the strawberry and tuna roll for my entree. It wasn't very spicy but I enjoyed the spicy salmon and the strawberry with the wasabi aioli. It was my friend's birthday and the waitress offered her a free shot, which was nice. However, the waitress couldn't split our bill so we all had to write down different numbers next to what we ordered so she could separate the checks.

Went here for happy hour bites and also to try some of their main entree items. So on the day I was there, they had the whole main dinner booked out so everyone else had to be seated in the patio area. That was fine, however I wanted to order some dishes off the main menu and I was told that nothing was available. Wow! Not sure if that was because of the event going on in the restaurant. So we pretty much ordered everything off the happy hour menu. The items were decent for the prices, but they did take a while to come out. Also everyone in my party of 4 ordered a shrimp tempura roll but only 2 of them had that extra orange colored sauce as decor and for taste on the plate. Wish things could have been a little better.

It's more like a 2 star but the prices are not too bad and the vibes were on point. So 3 it is. We stopped by this place for drinks and an early dinner on a lovely Sunday afternoon of shopping. The place has a beautiful interior and a wonderful outdoor patio. The drinks are nice but the food was simply not good. I'm sad because the menu has so many delicious sounding items which makes me think this place has so much potential. The chicken truffle dumplings ($12) were probably the driest most bland dumplings I've ever had. They were slathered in a strange sticky sweet sauce. The calamari ($14) was fried nicely but also had no flavor. The Hiramo sushi roll ($21) was also slaughtered in sticky sweet sauces. You could tell that the fish was not very high-quality, the tuna crudo ($19) was chewy and stringy too. My friend also mentioned that the chicken ramen ($18) lacked flavor. The staff are very polite.

Sunny day, beautiful weather, and a great time for some Asian infusion and a cocktail. It all paired out perfectly for a small outing at the Domain. I got the Taiwanese popcorn chicken, which was all very flavourful and tasty. What a great location to have a joyful Sunday afternoon. Next time I'll come for lunch or dinner and try more things of the menu. So far, it got me curious enough to come back.

    Wagyu Sliders
    Amber L.

JOI Asian Bistro was an absolute delight to dine at. At first glance it's a beautiful restaurant with many different seating options catered to how outdoors you would like to be. The checkin process with our reservation was smooth and so was the ordering process. The food was absolutely amazing. We ordered the wagyu beef sliders, braised short ribs, xiao long bao, and pork sabaro ramen. The sliders were great and so were the fries that came alongside it. They could've used less vegetables on it so help focus on the beef flavor but it was still good. The xiao long bao was pretty good as well, not as good as it would be at a dedicated dumpling spot but still above what we expected. The best part of the meal was the braised short rib. It was cooked to perfection and was extremely tender and juicy, just phenomenal. Unfortunately the biggest letdown was the ramen. The toppings were fine but the broth itself had zero flavor, almost like it was regular packaged ramen broth. Outside of the food the staff were great. They got us our orders quick and were incredibly receptive. We ordered a few drinks as well while we were there: the Japanese old fashioned, pineapple inferno, and lychee harmony. All of us liked the flavor of our drinks, although they were stronger than expected. Cumulatively, JOI is a fun and very good restaurant in The Domain. We were pleasantly surprised by the food although if you are searching for Asian food specifically then this would not be your best bet.

Came across this restaurant as I was looking for a spot for an afternoon cocktail and light bites. The place is elegant with a relaxing and chill atmosphere. The host and servers were welcoming and immediately accommodated me. They have a few interesting choices of drinks and cocktails and varieties of sushi, sashimi, bowls and just abt everything. I elected for my lychee martini and a couple of sushi rolls. I also didn't wait to be serve my drink and rolls. My drink was tasty and made right. The sushi rolls tasted fresh and delicious. I enjoyed my time alone and will definitely be returning to this spot again in the future.

    Vegetable tempura
    Bhavika C.

Dining at Joi offers a mix experiences for a vegetarian! The restaurant's modern décor and lively atmosphere create a pleasant backdrop for a meal. However, while the ambiance is inviting, the overall dining experience can feel hit-or-miss, especially for those with specific vegetarian preferences. To start, we tried the vegetable tempura which was Ok. Tried 2 of their Vegan and Veggie Sushi which was kind of disappointing for me! For the main courses, I requested them make me a Veggie noodle and add some extra veggies ! I would say I loved the thin noodles ! Decided to skip the desserts ! Overall service was good ! Love the location as you can also opt to sit outside in the patio if the weather is good ! (Definitely not during Texas summers) Overall, this place offers a decent experience but with room for improvement. For vegetarians seeking a standout meal, it may be worth exploring other options in Domain !

The outdoor seating is under utilized. It's such a great vibe for getting work done or the perfect lunch meeting. We had bento boxes that have to be the best in town. Fresh chicken and salmon as the mains with all the fixings of the traditional bento. Make time and check them out.

Can someone clarify the vegan menu items? tempura sushi is labeled vegan, or spicy mayo is on the vegan menu.

Virtually NO vegan items. This isn't a vegetarian-friendly restaurant in general. Good sushi though.

    Is there a happy hour?

No happy hour as of yet. Blue Sushi down the street does however

Unfortunately, the owner wasn't very helpful and couldn't give any indication of how many bread was being sold or whether it was likely to sell out.I ended up driving about 30 minutes from Central Austin, only to find that the salted bread from the pop-up was already sold out. That was really disappointing. When I went inside the store to buy some regular items instead, the interaction with the owner was also frustrating. He seemed to misunderstand what I was asking and kept directing me to stand in the pop-up line, even though I explained multiple times that I just wanted to purchase items from the store, which didn't require waiting in that line. In the end, I bought a few small items, but three small items came out to about $20, which felt overpriced for what I received. The overall service experience was not pleasant. The owner came across as rude and unwelcoming, and it didn't feel like customers who made the effort to come support the business were being valued. I understand this is a small, local mom-and-pop shop, and I usually love supporting small businesses. However, customer service still matters--especially when people travel a long distance to visit. Because of this experience, I probably won't be returning unless it's for a pop-up event.

The real disappointment was the spring rolls though. The spring rolls were so ridiculously overcooked, they were practically brown. They were very hard, although the filling wasn't awful. The whole order was just very mediocre which is unfortunate because we had high hopes. Honestly, we'll probably give this place another try. For $150/head you get solid Chinese food, with nice presentation. To me, if I consider the $150 price point for the meal, paying simply for presentation is not enough, especially if you consider other restaurants competing at this price point in the Austin area. Very few of the dishes had any real flavor advancements/innovations past the original Chinese dish it was based on. For example, the salt and pepper lobster comes out in this fancy wide wooden dish, filled with dried peppers, and then is seated on a textured stone bowl with sliced lettuce under the lobster tail. All to get 2 bites of typical tasting lobster. Was the lobster good? yes, but the general feeling is pay more to get better presentation, and less food for the money, not a food taste upgrade. To be fair, that may be what the restaurant is targeting. To contextualize Ling's kitchen, I feel as if you would be able to get a larger version of most if not all dishes, with similar quality in Houston for $20. For $150 you would be able to feed an entire family with drinks and dessert normally so I do not feel as if the money is worth it. Not much innovation on the flavors for the palate, but the food had very cute visuals. Service was nice, and the Chef's energy was infectious.

Chef Ling is a brilliant and personable chef who treats her chefs and staff like family. Several different chefs prepared each course, and the presentation was well beyond what we expected, both visually stunning and thoughtfully composed. From the moment we walked into Ling Kitchen, the energy felt warm and intentional. The space is intimate without feeling cramped, and you immediately sense that you are about to be part of something special rather than just another dinner reservation. Chef Ling personally welcomed guests, shared the story behind the menu, and checked in throughout the evening in a way that felt genuine and never forced. Each course built on the last, with a clear progression of flavors and textures. The fish was impeccably fresh, the knife work precise, and the seasoning balanced to highlight the natural ingredients rather than overpower them. You could see the coordination among the team as different chefs stepped forward to prepare and present their dishes. It truly felt collaborative, like a small culinary orchestra. What stood out most was the creativity. Traditional techniques were honored, but there were subtle twists and unexpected combinations that kept us curious and engaged. Every plate was composed like art. The pacing was perfect, allowing time to savor each bite and appreciate the craftsmanship. Beyond the food, the hospitality elevated the entire experience. The staff was knowledgeable, attentive, and clearly proud to be part of the team. That family atmosphere Chef Ling fosters is palpable and makes the evening feel personal. If you are in Austin and looking for a memorable omakase that rivals experiences in much larger food cities, Ling Kitchen is a must. This is not just dinner, it is a curated, immersive experience. We will absolutely be back. Thank you Ling!!! You are truly one of a kind!
