First time visiting this restaurant on a Tuesday evening. The ambiance was nice. The food was wonderful. I ordered wonton soup, it comes in a rather large bowl! I thought it was going to be a cup of soup. Also ordered the broccoli beef. Good flavor, great portion size! My husband ordered cream cheese crab wontons for appetizer. No complaints, there was more crab than cheese! We ordered the Rainbow Roll. We ordered 2 rolls because the waitress told us it was only enough for 1 person which is incorrect. It was a large 8pc roll that tasted great. Very fresh. Perfect size for 2 people, too much for just 1. For drink we had water, unfortunately the water was warm. I had requested ice for my water but never got it. Prices were perfect for how much you get. read more

Good grief. In the domain and wanted light eats. No one was at the host stand. My mom and daughter and I went in.A fellow bustled up from in back and told us to sit anywhere. Wasn't crowded. We opted for porch seating as it was lighter than inside. Waited for about 10 minutes until he came back and told us his server was really busy (almost no one there) and brought us water. Took drink orders, got it wrong. Happy hour sparkling wine. Nope. Got my daughter's Coke right. Server appeared. The only one for the whole place. There were 3 other occupied tables...I felt bad for her. She was very nice. Seemed to be running from table to table, behind the bar, in the kitchen. At one point she wandered out carrying a plate of "gyoza". Went from table to table (all 3) and no one had ordered them. So she asked if we ate pork, and we said we did, and she said, "on the house!" They were fried to a dark crisp and were so hard they could have been throwing stars. Weapons. The edamame came and it was dried out and the shishito peppers came with grease but no seasoning. The lo mein came and was ramen noodles with what seemed to be a bird's eye mix of frozen vegetables. My sushi came and it was warm and the tuna was off and looked like wet cat food. My mom's shrimp tempura never came (we hardly saw anyone for help) and at that point we called it quits. The wine was fine, which we attributed to it not having been made there. When we asked for our check a third person said he'd get it and asked if we wanted a box for the (intentionally) uneaten food. My mom and I declined after just having toasted to hoping to not get sick. It was $90 after tip. Who got the tip? Can't be sure. I can't recommend walking past this place enough. If you want crummy dumplings...I hesitate to call them that, and greasy ramen with frozen vegetables, go to HEB and hit the frozen aisle. Cook it, then put it in a 150 degree oven. I really wanted to love this place. They have a fabulous ambiance, great views, awesome music, above and beyond service, and the food was a huge flop. I repeat, I had very high hopes and wanted to love this experience, but I didn't. I want to be fair and give a complete overview of what was wrong with this experience because I feel if everyone else had given an accurate reason for the lower ratings I probably would not have come here so I am going to be very honest. This place has entirely too many good things to have the food be so lackluster. If the food matched the service and ambience, this would be a five star restaurant. I'll break down each item individually and give them each an individual rating. Shrimp tempura - 8/10 the shrimp tempura was good, but nothing special about it. It is as you would expect, hot and fresh with a nice crisp. It tasted like it was made with fresh oil, and the breading was nice and light. Chicken dumpling - 4/10 I was not impressed with this dumpling at all. It felt like it was cooked too high too quick and the inside was undercooked and underseasoned. I took a bite out of one and left the rest alone. I was not a super fan of the sauces either, which I got on the side because I did not want it drizzled over the dumplings so I could rate everything individually. Korean fried chicken - 7/10 I should have read the menu a little more carefully. These are boneless, which is basically just a chicken tender, we got ours with the orange sauce, which was really good but still not quite what I was looking for. The chicken was definitely fresh, the crust was very good, but it was not what I was expecting after having had actual Korean fried chicken. Bento Box - 5/10 everything on this tray tasted like a combination of freezer food and fresh made. The California rolls were very mediocre, the salad was nothing to shake a stick at, the tempura vegetables were really good though. The white rice lacked flavor and the yakitori chicken is not an item that they keep on the menu, but the chef made it upon request and we are super grateful for the accommodation, but it just lacked flavor. That is what makes leaving this review so difficult, the service truly was above and beyond, but the food was a major miss. The miso soup was room temperature and I was not a fan of the flavor. Ramen with chicken - 5/10 one of the main reasons I wanted to come eat here was because they have a large selection of gluten-free menu items. This Ramen is one of them so I was excited to experience gluten-free Ramen without having to take any digestive enzymes but this also came as a major disappointment. The broth tasted like the same broth they use for the miso soup, which I already did not like at all. The noodles had a bit of a Play-Doh texture, they were very strange. I think some rice noodles would be a much better option if they want to do gluten-free because whatever noodle they are using has a very strange texture. I was traveling and did not want to take any leftovers so I just dug out the meat. They also forgot to put the soft boiled egg, but I did not make a stink about it. I feel like the recipes could use a major revamping because there is no reason Joi should not have mind blowing food. I tried Joi for the first time recently. It's located at The Domain. I made a reservation, but it wasn't necessary since there were plenty of open tables. They have a great patio, and the inside is furnished nicely. Everyone we interacted with was very friendly and made us feel welcome. It's also a very accessible restaurant, which I appreciate. My husband ordered a mule and said it was well balanced and tasty. We started with calamari, but it came out at the same time as our entrees. It tasted fine at first, but the last piece was slimy, which was off putting. I ordered the shrimp lo mein and liked the flavors, but the noodles were very overcooked, and some were even crunchy, very disappointing. My husband had the sliders with fries and enjoyed them. Our waitress was very nice, but she didn't really keep up with refilling our drinks, so that was another small bump. I'm willing to give them a second try, but the Domain has a lot of good restaurants to compete with, so they'll need to smooth out those bumps to really stand out. read more

It was a lovely outdoor dining experience. They have a nice dining space on the North lawn of the Domain and we were seated promptly. The food came out quite fast and some of the dishes that were most enjoyed were the truffle chicken potsticker, the lobster taco and the Korean Spicy chicken. The lemon tart for dessert was bright and tart in the very best way. It was my favorite bite of the night and I'm not even a dessert person! We only ordered small plates because that was the vibe we were going for during our meal but they also have entrees listed (we will try next time). They have a nice variety of bar drinks and the whole experience felt relaxed, not rushed, and just lovely. The restaurants around the seemed loud and chaotic but Joi was chill and relaxed. I'd come back for the ambience alone. The service was great. We had a few different people come to our table and they were all excellent. This is a great addition to the Domain. The restaurant was pretty empty when my friends and I got there. I ordered a passionfruit prescription cocktail, which was tasty. For an appetizer I had the hamachi crudo. The fish was fresh. I had the strawberry and tuna roll for my entree. It wasn't very spicy but I enjoyed the spicy salmon and the strawberry with the wasabi aioli. It was my friend's birthday and the waitress offered her a free shot, which was nice. I'm sad because the menu has so many delicious sounding items which makes me think this place has so much potential. The chicken truffle dumplings ($12) were probably the driest most bland dumplings I've ever had. They were slathered in a strange sticky sweet sauce. The calamari ($14) was fried nicely but also had no flavor. The Hiramo sushi roll ($21) was also slaughtered in sticky sweet sauces. JOI Asian Bistro was an absolute delight to dine at. At first glance it's a beautiful restaurant with many different seating options catered to how outdoors you would like to be. The checkin process with our reservation was smooth and so was the ordering process. The food was absolutely amazing. We ordered the wagyu beef sliders, braised short ribs, xiao long bao, and pork sabaro ramen. The sliders were great and so were the fries that came alongside it. They could've used less vegetables on it so help focus on the beef flavor but it was still good. The xiao long bao was pretty good as well, not as good as it would be at a dedicated dumpling spot but still above what we expected. The best part of the meal was the braised short rib. It was cooked to perfection and was extremely tender and juicy, just phenomenal. Unfortunately the biggest letdown was the ramen. The toppings were fine but the broth itself had zero flavor, almost like it was regular packaged ramen broth. Outside of the food the staff were great. They got us our orders quick and were incredibly receptive. We ordered a few drinks as well while we were there: the Japanese old fashioned, pineapple inferno, and lychee harmony. All of us liked the flavor of our drinks, although they were stronger than expected. Cumulatively, JOI is a fun and very good restaurant in The Domain. Came across this restaurant as I was looking for a spot for an afternoon cocktail and light bites. The place is elegant with a relaxing and chill atmosphere. The host and servers were welcoming and immediately accommodated me. They have a few interesting choices of drinks and cocktails and varieties of sushi, sashimi, bowls and just abt everything. I elected for my lychee martini and a couple of sushi rolls. I also didn't wait to be serve my drink and rolls. My drink was tasty and made right. The sushi rolls tasted fresh and delicious. Terrible food and service all around. No one enjoyed the meal in my group, and to cap it one of the people in our party has a food allergy and had to use an EpiPen when Joi accidentally added the allergy to her dish. Mistakes happen with allergies, but the resolution was to send the server (not a manager) out to tout that they took that dish off the bill (still added 20% gratituty without a visit from any sort of manager). I have been in the service industry for a long time and I honestly can't say I've had worse food, poorer service, for food that is wildly overpriced... but hey, you get the cool grassy area to let your kids run around in while you eat. My advice, go eat at any of the other restaurants in the domain, then come to this place and get a drink if you want to enjoy the area, trust me. read more

Been to Joi a few times and loved their food. Decided to take my friend for dinner there the other day and had a really bad experience. Service was not only slow but it was terrible. Only bartender came to help. All other staff was sitting around in the corner chatting and on their phone, not once did they come our way. So sad...we were once regulars here but moved to Lakeway so we only come once in a while...it's gone so far downhill. The young sushi chef was yelling across the restaurant to his server friends and cussing. We visited today as a family of six, including a newborn, and had a deeply upsetting experience. While sitting on the patio, a soccer ball from the grass area was kicked directly at our table. The ball hit one of our family members, shattered a wine glass, and narrowly missed our newborn. The response from the other parents was dismissive, and the situation escalated into a confrontation. Shockingly, the owners watched this happen and did nothing to intervene or de-escalate. They only approached us after the other party left--and only then to ask for the ball back. There was zero concern shown for the person who was hit or the safety of the infant. On top of the safety issues, the service was unacceptable. The food took an hour to arrive because of a "single wok station," a delay that was never mentioned until we checked in after 40 minutes. No compensation or apology was offered for the wait or the chaos. The food was mediocre, but the lack of basic hospitality and safety is the reason we won't be back. read more

My partner and I came here on a Friday evening and overall, had a decent experience. We were seated very quickly (I highly recommend the indoor/outdoor dining area) and the staff was kind. I ordered the "One night in Bangkok" cocktail, as recommended by the server, and I really liked it! I had asked for something light, refreshing, and fruity and it hit all those marks. As for the food, we ordered some tofu buns as our app and I REALLY liked them! The tofu texture was super crispy and as a vegetarian, a unique treat because you don't see tofu breaded like that often. I ended up getting their noodle dish and they were able to accommodate me by adding tofu to it. Unfortunately, I did not like it. I found it to be bland and overly oily. My partner ordered some fish items and seemed to really enjoy them. As I was writing this review, I asked for his thoughts and if it were up to him, he would give Joi four stars. Located inside the Domain, Joi offers a variety of Asian fusion dishes. I'm surprised with the low reviews-the food is great! The omelet over rice was surprising to me-usually I see rice inside the omelette (omurice) but I accepted it since it's a fusion. Ramen broth is flavorful and warm. It is a bit dark inside. Enjoyed a girls night out at Joi last weekend! We grabbed an 8:30pm reservation and the restaurant was pretty empty that late. Ambiance was beautiful but service was spotty. The staff was friendly and took our drink + food orders promptly, but after bringing out round 1 of drinks and our food, we never saw them again. They never checked in to see if we wanted to order more drinks, refill water, or anything. That was disappointing. The food was fantastic!
