Beef Ribs, Brisket, Mac & Cheese, Beans and More

Food here was pretty good, we have one in the DFW, the beef ribs were tender and seasoned very well. Didn't need any sauce unless it was a preference. The brisket was decent as well. Some of the sides didn't have as much flavor but they weren't necessarily nasty, with some salt and pepper it could spruce up the flavor for them. Service was decent there was a big line outside and it had to be organized into a style where you follow the line, order your cuts, then pay for it when you got to the register. The place was lively and very loud, lots of people and commotion but overall good food and energy. Paid almost $150 for this plate and some drinks.

Visited Terry Black's on an early Sunday afternoon, and got in before the early dinner rush. The crew helped me get in line, and the line was very efficient from start to finish. I order 3 meats: jalapeno & cheddar sausage, brisket, and the smoked pork ribs. THE DISAPPOINTMENT: the brisket! At first, when they served me the brisket, I was excited because they brought out a fresh one and I was the first to try from the new slab. Isn't there a rule to let meat "rest" before serving, to redistribute the juices? They sliced mine, and just from the look --- it wasn't my "dream piece". After I tried it, it was not fall-apart tender AND even a bit dry. Jalapeno & Cheddar Sausage: Yikes, not my favorite either. The texture was borderline boudin --- and that is not a compliment. The snap was non-existant, and it was literally falling apart. I couldn't taste jalapeno nor cheddar. VINDICATION: Pork Ribs. These pork ribs were amazing; they were smoked to perfection, seasoned well, and held on to the bone but was still tender to eat. It paired perfectly with the variety of BBQ sauces available on table-tops at Terry Black's. Must get. I opted to sit outside, since it was less crowded. The only thing is the BIRDS. There are a number of birds waiting to eat any handouts from the customers, so keep a watchful eye over your food --- or you might have to fend off a hungry animal! THE SIDES were great. Decent mac'n'cheese, lovely creamy corn. EMPLOYEES WERE AMAZING. Price was so-so. But glad to cross this place off my list. Hopefully next time, I get a more tender piece of brisket and my sausage doesn't fall apart when trying to eat. Praying this was a one-off!

The only BBQ in Austin worth the 40min wait in line for an earlier dinner rush. Parking was rough and packed on a Saturday. The line is pretty organized walking in, gets packed like sardines around the cashier area. 2lb beef rib was about $80. Tottaly worth it! Brisket here is always flavorful and not dry. Tried 1 pork rib since it was already alot on our tray. It was just as tender as the beef rib. Love the flavored BBQ sauces they offer. Corn bread was moist. Peach cobbler was amazing. Green beans werent mushy. Potatoes salad perfectly seasoned. Cole slaw was fresh. We had to sit in the hot sun since all tables on the patio are first come first serve seating. Inside seating was just way too packed. Easy self grab to-go boxes on the patio. I like being able to see the BBQ cook out front. Will always come back for my fav BBQ tray.

They meat here was phenomenal. The sides were not as great as I expected. I thought the cornbread was too dry.

Definitely an austin staple that is simply put.....AMAZING!! Recently brought some family members who were visiting from out of town to Texas barbecue. Teri Blacks, once again, did not disappoint. From the gigantic beef, ribs, succulent, pork, ribs, brisket, super moist, turkey, and juicy sausage links, everything was a hit! There was a huge line that moved very fast to get your sides and meets. Once we found a table, we got down to Business. Some of the sides included green beans, sweet corn, and amazing Mac and cheese! I'm usually not a side person, but the mac & cheese was phenomenal! Make sure to get here early because it gets packed every single day. Almost to the point of uncomfortable the seats are pretty close and packed. I didn't mind it this much because the food was well worth it. Definitely worth it and I will be back

This was definitely a highlight of my visit to Austin! It absolutely lived up to the hype and I am so excited that we got to try it. I was expecting long lines, but we arrived shortly after 11 on a Sunday and it wasn't bad at all. It moved quickly and they were very efficient. We ordered the family meal to share, and it came with a tray of meat and another tray of all the sides that were included. We also added on an order of the beef rib, which is an absolute must have here. Yes it's pricey but it's also huge, and it was so tender! The meat here doesn't even really need sauce, but I was still using so much of it because the sauces itself were so good. They have them available on each table, and you can choose from original, sweet, or spicy. My favorites were the sweet and spicy, and I especially liked mixing them up together. The only note I have if anything is that the sausage was a little bit dry, but again easily solved by their delicious barbecue sauce and all the different side dishes. The macaroni and cheese was gooey perfection and I also really loved their potato salad because of the dill they put in it. The family meal also includes banana pudding, which was a yummy way to end the meal! It was such a treat to be able to try this place and I won't forget it!

This is officially my new favorite barbecue spot! Every bite lived up to the hype. The ribs were fall-off-the-bone tender and packed with incredible flavor, while the brisket was juicy, smoky, and melted in my mouth. The sides were just as impressive. The potato salad was absolutely amazing, and the cream corn was easily some of the best I've ever had from a barbecue restaurant. The mac and cheese was good, but a little too runny for my personal preference. It still had great flavor, just wasn't my favorite. The sausage was an unexpected standout--I usually skip sausage altogether, but this one was so good I'd order it again without hesitation. And don't even get me started on the banana pudding... it was absolutely insane. One of the best I've had. The service was friendly, helpful, and efficient. Even with a packed house, the line moved surprisingly fast. The atmosphere inside has that authentic backyard cookout feel that makes the whole experience even better. Overall, this place is an easy 10/10. Amazing food, great service, and a welcoming atmosphere. If you're looking for top-tier barbecue, I can't recommend this spot enough.

I had the worst experience here. I came on Tuesday where it wasn't supposed to be too busy. However there was a large party that caused all of the staff to rush my group. As this was my first time here, I was very confused with how this was organized which made the process more difficult. Once I sat down with my food, I received the wrong type of sausage and had to go back to the front. Then once I ate it; it was dry... My Mac and cheese was good though, but my friends said it was too watery for them. This was overall an unfortunate experience here.

Fast line for a Saturday night in the summer! Got to try the black margarita - caution it'll turn your tongue black! But it was good. As usual the meats were the star of the show with the beef rib and brisket bunt ends standing out. Brisket and turkey were okay. Sides (mac and cheese + green beans) were very good, with potato salad being ok (just cubes of potatoes mixed with other seasonings). Snagged a table inside although it was slightly tight since there was a food tour taking up about 1/4 of the tables indoors. Team serving the food was very nice!

Terry Black's Barbecue is a Texas style BBQ joint that serves some of the best brisket in the state. There are multiple locations, but this location is the original. While some BBQ joints are known for long lines, Terry Black's has a great system with multiple meat cutters which result in a line that keeps moving and a full belly. My Overall Rating - 5 Stars (Atmosphere, Service, Food, Return) Atmosphere - If this is your first visit to Terry Blacks, take a tour of the smoker's on the side of the restaurant. The smokers are fenced in, but you can walk around and inhale the smoke smell. It will prime you as you get in line to order. Terry Black's is 100% casual. There is plenty of seating and it's always packed. 1 Star. Service - Terry Black's proves that you don't have to have a long line to serve great BBQ. All you need is a great system. The line will snake you to first order your sides, where the friendly staff will get your order. Once ready, you make your way to the meat cutters. The friendly staff will cut your meats to order. It's really an awesome show and they are experts at what they do. 1 Star. Food - Texas is known for its brisket, and Terry Black's has some of the best. The bark is black and salty, and the meat is smokey and delicious. Ask for fatty brisket and let it melt in your mouth. The beef rib is also great. Sold by the pound, the beef rib is great for sharing (and photos). The flavor is beefier (and fattier) than the brisket. All the sides are great, especially the banana pudding. 2 Stars. Will I Return? - Yes. The original continues to deliver. Terry Black's has expanded to Dallas and Lockhart. My favorite location is the OG in Austin. It you're in Austin and don't have 3 hours to stand in line for BBQ, come to Terry Black's. 1 Star.

Finally had a chance to try one of the famous barbecue spots, Terry Black's Barbecue! They have a small parking lot that is always crowded! Open the door and get in line. Signage and QR code explaining how it works. Basically, line up gets your sides, dessert, drinks, and fixings. Then a server takes your tray and gets you into the meat area where you order your "cue". The interior is bustling with activity. Two separate multi-user men and women's restrooms. They offer inside seating and outside patio seating. If you dine outside, be watchful of your food as the birds are very sneaky and bold in stealing your mac & cheese and/or cornbread! I personally saw this. The flies are bold themselves landing on your food while ignoring your shooing hand. The service is friendly and helpful. Sliced Brisket: Texas' finest slow-smoked brisket, handcrafted with their signature Central Texas method and smoked low & slow over post oak for melt-in-your-mouth tenderness and deep, smoky flavor. Sold by the pound, with one pound yielding 4-6 generous slices (5/5). Ok, this was one of the best tasting brisket ever! Pork Ribs: Tender pork ribs with a sweet flavor and slight kick of heat, slow-smoked to perfection. Sold by the pound, about 3-4 ribs per pound (5/5). Wow, these were to die for! Cream Corn: Sweet corn kernels simmered in a rich, creamy sauce with a touch of butter (5/5). Cornbread: Sweet corn bread served hot! (4/5). The cornbread was cake-like and moist. Yes, definitely one of the best barbecue places in Austin. It's a must visit place! Come support your business. My 2300th review reserved for Terry Black's.

    Yikes! So tough.

I've gotten no response from management after trying to contact them about my awful visit, so i just knocked off another star based on the horrible customer service and overcooked meat.

If you're looking for Texas BBQ, Terry Black's is the place. We tried six different BBQ spots during our vacation in Texas, and Terry Black's was easily our favorite. Everything we had was packed with flavor, cooked perfectly, and lived up to the hype. You can tell why this place is so popular. The restaurant was absolutely packed, but don't let that scare you. The staff has the process down to a science and keeps people moving incredibly fast. This ended up being one of the highlights of our trip, and I honestly wish I could go back. If you're anywhere near Terry Black's, do yourself a favor and stop in.

Ask the Community - Terry Black's Barbecue

Are their onions in the potato salad?

I've had their Potato Salad, but don't recall if there were onions. It was delicious.

Are we able to order half a pound of meat?

    Yes, and it's delicious 🤤

Can we sit outside with our dog?

It is difficult because is very crowded

Is the food here safe for someone with a Soy allergy?

    Sorry , I don't know . Call them (512) 394-5899

If I order online for pick up, Do I need to fall in the regular long line like anybody else or do they have a separate line for pick up?

No, there is a separate line for pre order pickups.

    Is there a play area?

Nope. But there is outdoor seating.

Do you get your beef from creekstone?

You want it from Creekstone? They get it from CK. They get it so damn good from CK. Don't doubt.

Is it a dine in restaurant? If so can you handle a party of 8 on Wednesday evening? Thanks.

It is a dine in. Plenty of seating for groups of 8.

What's the brand of the sliced bread?

    Looks like Wonderbread to me.

Anyone eat here on a Friday night around 5pm? Are there still food options around that time? How long is the wait time?

Lisa, I ate there on Friday around 4:00 pm with almost no wait time. Full selection of food options. Nothing sold out. Not sure if you're able to go a bit earlier then 5:00 pm. Beat the rush... Enjoy!

Hi, how long is the wait for Saturday afternoon now?

I would expect to wait at anytime but the line always moves quickly. Finding a seat to eat may be difficult depending on your group size.

What time should we get in line in the morning if we want to be amongst the first people in line?

When we visited, we waited in the parking lot just under an hour, but an actual line didn't start to form until about 15 minutes before!

Do they typically run out of items in the evening (after 7pm)?

    Yes

After I wait in line, order and get my food, is it easy to find a seat? Are there lots of seats, inside or outside?

It is so easy to find a spot! People eat and move very fast, they don't stay too long

What's the wait time like on a Monday? Trying to gauge what time we should line up for lunch.

Roughly 20-30 minutes, it gets packed early. The lone moves pretty quick though and well worth the wait!

    Do they take reservations?

No, you stand in line to order your food and then sit down. There is no wait staff. Line moves pretty fast and the food is worth your time

Are dogs allowed inside whiling eating and ordering?

Not inside but they can sit on the patio. I keep my dog in the car with the AC on and when I have my food and table then I bring him out of the car if I'm by myself

We have a layover between flights and would be in Austin between 2pm-6pm on a Friday. How long usually is the wait during during these times? Is it possible to come here, eat then get back to the airport?

by the time you get out of the airport, deal with Austin traffic to get over there, maybe wait 15 to 30 minutes in line, eat, get back to the airport, deal with TSA, be at the boarding area, sounds like more aggravation and stress than I would want.…

As of late, what has the wait time been?

Sometimes zero, sometimes 20 minutes depending on the crowd. Could be longer. If you go in middle of afternoon on a week day it's not that busy. Weekends can be longer as people with guests come by and line can be out the door. Nothing like…

When I tell you these ribs were a religious experience I am not embellishing. Full disclosure: I do not currently live in the south so I don't consider myself a BBQ connoisseur, but I did spend 4 years in the south and have sampled many BBQ joints in the meantime. Take this review as someone who really enjoys BBQ (and any slow cooked meat for that matter) but who could not list more than 10 BBQ restaurants they have eaten at in the last 5 years. So the beef ribs. Great texture, tender meat but still had a bite to it. Expertly seasoned so they were not wet with sauce but still moist. I would consider 1 beef rib a snack, 2 a small meal. I also tried the chopped brisket (brisket and burnt ends sitting in a soup of BBQ sauce). That was also delicious (and more reasonably priced), but I could have done with slightly less sauce. It really was like a soup and while the sauce was tasty, there was too much of it. I went later in the afternoon (around 2/2:30pm) and got their last two beef ribs so going earlier is better. When I…read morewent to go pick up my order, the cashier was graciously enough to inform me that their website is powered through DoorDash so if you order online, all the prices are unfortunately higher than their menu...so unfortunate to hear :( As for the food, I ordered the 3 Piece White Meat Chicken Plate, which came with 2 chicken breasts and 1 wing (they surprisingly give the full wing), and it comes with toast, baked beans, and cole slaw be default. You can exchange the default sides for some other options for a little extra charge. It was wonderful to see how generous the portion sizes were, including the sides! The chicken was perfectly friend and breaded in my opinion while keeping the white meat tender -- it was still like that even after I put the leftovers in the air fryer the next day. The baked beans were very flavorful and the sweetness complimented the savory chicken well. The cheer on top moment was the fact that the chicken was seasoned with a spicy seasoning so there was a bit of a subtle spicy aftertaste in each bite! I'll definitely be back again! :)

How do they make their chicken that tender and juicy?? Also, why are the potato salad and mac n cheese the best I've ever had?? Our total came out to be ~$26, without tip. 5/5 Overall, great service, great food, and great experience! Parking is a bit hard since it's in downtown, but there is a parking garage across from the restaurant and it's only $5 for 0-2 hours, which I think is the best you can find. We also came on a Saturday around 2:30 pm. We got our food pretty quick so you can really just eat for 30 minutes and walk around downtown for a good 1.5 hours before coming back and leaving. We will definitely be back!

The staff were personable, considering his busy they were. So helpful and engaged with customers. That alone would bring you back. But the smoked meats are hard to beat! I mean, brisket is the movie star, but the sausage and pulled pork weren't to shabby either. Everyone should go here at least 1 time. Then you'll always know how to tell a good BBQ.

We tried the brisket, the pork ribs and house sausage. The brisket and ribs were fall apart tender and impossibly moist. The moistness was what struck me as different and more delicious compared to other barbecued meats I've had. They did keep the meat wrapped in foil until presented to the customer, which must help. The brisket is only seasoned with salt and pepper so the flavor of the meat and smoke comes through. The ribs are also finished lightly with bbq sauce, still preserving the meat flavor. They do offer four different barbecue sauces that are quite delicious. Bread and pickles are free, as are ice and water. Line wait data point: Went on a Tuesday (they are closed on Mondays) got there at 12:20 PM and it took just 80 minutes to get through the line. Left just after 2pm and there was no line - and few if any meats left.

For fifteen people, the total cost was $425.69. This included delivery costs and taxes, but no tip. It consisted of three meats, two sides, and a dessert along with pickles, onions, bread, and BBQ sauce. There was also a set of utensils delivered, but plates were forgotten, but not a big deal. Brisket - This was definitely the best item eaten of the day. It was tender and juicy while adding the BBQ sauce giving that extra bite. The BBQ sauce was great regardless, a little bit of sweet and smoky flavor going on. Pulled Pork - This was another solid meat choice. I did not think it was as tender as the brisket, but it was still enjoyable especially with that BBQ sauce, which was key throughout the meal. Sausage - This was not bad. The snap on this threw me off a little, but it was not too bad. They were large links and had plenty of flavor. Gouda Mac & Cheese with Smoked Bacon - This was actually penne pasta with little pieces of the bacon. I actually preferred this pasta choice here. It really soaked up the cheese sauce. The sauce was not too over powerful and was just right. Beans with Smoked Bacon - These were not too bad. I thought they were a little liquidity, but the added bacon pieces definitely helped. Banana Pudding - This came in individual cups, which was nice. The pudding was thick with a little meringue or whipped cream present and a few wafer cookies on top. It was a satisfying ending to a very good meal. Will I go back? Yes.
