For the mains, I got the buttermilk fried chicken and waffles, which was good but lacked something (maybe some heat or salt). The other dieshes we got were the shrimp and grits, southern crab cake benny, and the southern breakfast. All were actually very good. The restaurant was on Open Table so I was able to make a reservation the day before which made the visit great! Jordan our server did a get at job in showing us around the menu. We had the buttermilk biscuits and dates wrapped in bacon as appetizers they were delicious. For entrees ordered steak and eggs, and the half order of shrimp and grits bowls were also outstanding with our Hugo spritz drink. A friend of mine was staying in Mueller and asked to meet up with her for drinks. She chose Colleen's Kitchen. She's been here before, but this was my first time here. I love Mueller, such a darling neighborhood. Everything is walkable. And their Texas Farmers Market on Sunday's is fabulous. Colleen's was very welcoming. We actually sat at their gorgeous white marble bar. We both got their signature cocktail. Colleen's House Punch. Came in a small glass and garnished with blueberries. Vodka based, not too sweet, really good. We later ordered Brussels sprouts and bacon wrapped dates. Brussels sprouts were charred perfectly and firm. They were large in size, and actually shareable. The bacon wrapped dates with blue cheese were so good. Melt in your mouth. The sweet dates complimenting the tang of blue cheese. soft, warm, cheesy. The plate came with 5. Not exactly sharable, but we did share them. Totally going to make these at home. Genius! The second drink we got was the lemon drop. Beautifully garnished with a lemon zest floating on top. Nice smooth lemon, vodka flavor. Had a great time catching up. We talked for 3 hours. The restaurant was nice inside. Some table were more intimate, some booths, and a table that was long for a larger family, or friends celebrating. The atmosphere is reminiscent of a visit to grandma's house, with plenty of family photos, comfortable furnishings, and soothing wallpaper. They are known for their fried chicken, biscuits, and shrimp & grits. The vibe is a convergence of warm and inviting. Great place for date night, brunch with friends, or a family gathering. We had reservations and were instantly seated. The menu features traditional Southern favorites like the buttermilk fried chicken, shrimp and grits, biscuits, and chicken and waffles. We ordered some buttermilk biscuits as an appetizer, which came with tomato jelly (first time tasting tomato jelly - tasted like a cross between orange and apricot flavoring). The hubs had fried chicken and a Texas waffle and I had avocado toast (with bacon and heirloom tomatoes). The biscuits were buttery and perfectly baked (slightly crisp on the outside and moist on the inside. We were fortunate to get Rachel as our server. She was soft-spoken and genteel. She treated us if we were the only people in the restaurant. Out of nowhere, she would pop up at our table to provide anything we asked for. My family and I visited Colleen's a few times and this place literally meets the mark every single time. We started with drinks. My wife and I had the frozen pineapple drink (I forget what it was called, but it was on the Happy Hour). I had the amazing Cobb Salad that comes with a honey mustard poppy seed in house dressing. I loved my Cobb salad. My wife had the shrimp & grits. She loved it, but said it wasn't her favorite. My mother-in-law had the chicken pot pie. She remarked that it didn't have enough seasoning, but was otherwise ok. Our waitress was so sweet and she checked on us multiple times and had a very warm and welcoming demeanor. After eating, my wife had a coffee with her specialized flavored beverage syrup. We were there on a Saturday and there was some sort of an event going on in the immediate park area with several bands playing music. Everybody was having a good time! Second time coming here and won't be the last. Such a beautiful, feminine classy little gem in Mueller. Even the plates were all antiques. The tomato soup was out of this world. You can most definitely swim in that heavy cream. The cup was just not enough. I had the half Cobb with green goddess dressing. The host was absolutely amazing, accommodating, positive and happy. Left after ordering drinks...spotted black mold in AC register blowing down on us. Manager told us owner was aware of it..... and hasn't done anything about it....unbelievable. Stay away! Following up on my review from last night, black mold in HVAC systems poses serious health risks and can significantly affect indoor air quality. It's one thing to maybe have mold in a closet or away from the dining opposed to having mold spores blowing down on customers. Remediation/removal are essential. It's irresponsible, at best, for the owner to not have taken care of the problem when it first became apparent that the mold was present. Also, the owner is also placing themselves in a litigious position by not taking care of it. The restaurant should be closed until the mold is removed! read more

Found this place on a whim because we were going on a movie date at the Alamo right next to it! This southern style made from scratch restaurant was so cute! It was busy when we went around noon, so we sat at the community table (one long table that seats multiple parties), our other option being the bar. Our server was kind and told us they were known for their biscuits and chicken! I ended up getting the southern crab cake benny and my friend got the buttermilk fried chicken biscuit with a side of Barton springs mill grits. The restaurant also provides validated parking for the McBee garage (just remember to scan the QR code and fill out the form), which is helpful given that the Mueller area can get quite crowded. Shrimp + Grits ($16, 3.5/5) - Half order came with 3 gulf shrimp over a plate of smoked cheddar chive grits with sliced scallions as garnish. There is the option to get the full order, which would be $24. - I liked the overall flavor combinations and texture of the grits, but took off a few points because the half order itself is pretty expensive for the amount of food you get. Skillet Cornbread ($9, 4/5) - Came out warm and fresh! Paired nicely with the whipped honey butter, which adds a subtle sweet touch. Overall enjoyed our visit at Colleen's! Flavors are solid, although prices lean towards being more expensive. If I came back, would be interested in trying other options on their menu. read more

Really disappointing experience from a place we have supported for years. We have lived in the neighborhood since 2019 and have been to Colleen's many times. This visit started off well. A manager kindly helped seat us at the last table that could fit a high chair, and our server was perfectly pleasant. Then we watched an older Uber Eats driver ask for an update on an order after being told it would be ready in five minutes. More than ten minutes later, when he checked again, the assistant manager was openly rude and dismissive. He told the driver he could not make the kitchen move any faster and then said, "Why don't you leave and come back then if you're in such a hurry." That interaction was bad enough that we canceled our food order, paid for our drinks, and left. When asked why, I explained exactly what we had witnessed. The response: "Don't worry about that, he's just an Uber driver." That told us everything we needed to know. We do not want to support a business where management treats people that way and then defends it. We will not be back. John, you should be ashamed of yourself. read more

I really enjoyed Colleen's! The decor is so adorable and has a cute story. Think cool aunt's house. I was impressed to see they have a daily happy hour from 2:30 -6 with yummy food and drinks. We had the fried green tomatoes which were cooked prefectly. The deviled eggs were yummy with mustard seed and bacon on top. They have delicious Brussels sprouts with an herb dressing but not crispy as they are named. The bar area is beautiful too and they have great service here! We had some wine and tequila sunrises with our brunch as well. I had the avocado toast ($13) on a biscuit instead of bread. The biscuit seemed homemade and was flaky, buttery, rich, and heavenly. The bacon I think is honey cured or something because it was salty, sweet, fatty, and delicious. I keep forgetting to make a reservation for Colleen's Kitchen but fortunately was able to be seated otherwise there was two spots open at the bar. The staff was very friendly as usual and a wonderful place to enjoy brunch. I ordered the Avocado Toast and Skillet Cornbread to enjoy before my meal. The cornbread was in a skillet and big enough to feed four. It had great flavor and even better with butter on it. The avocado toast was very presentable with pederson's applewood smoked bacon, fried vital farms egg, smashed avocado, rebel tomatoes, on top of a slice of grilled brioche bread. It was very delicious and fulfilling. I parked in a parking garage across from Colleen's Kitchen where is one of the those Metropolis operated once where you just drive in/out and their app charges you automatically. If you do not have it then scan the QR code on the pillars there to install app. As for dining at Colleen's Kitchen I scanned another QR code there that provided me free parking for I think an hour. I parked for 1 hour 45 minutes and needed up paying nothing. read more

My family tends to pick Colleen's kitchen for special occasions at least a few times a year. We keep going back because the menu has something that everyone will like and the service is always outstanding. We picked it again for family valentines dinner a day late. We arrived in time to enjoy their every day happy hour. Everyone ordered drinks off the happy hour menu and we also enjoyed items off the menu as well. We started with the deviled eggs and skillet cornbread, and then added the wonderful brussels sprouts. I opted to get the breakfast biscuit sandwich for my main and then added a side of grits. The happy hour menu is already a good deal but is doubly so when you consider the prices for the deviled eggs and the breakfast biscuit. Coincidentally, despite everybody ordering different dishes, all of us ended up with grits in our dishes. I'm pretty sure it's safe to save the smoked cheese grits our family favorite. From the seared scallops through the shrimp and grits and fried chicken along with my own breakfast biscuit, everybody was thrilled with their food. The service at Colleen's is always attentive without being intrusive. We were generously given more time more than once to decide what we wanted off of the main menu. Additionally every time we go at least once a manager stops by the table to make sure that we're getting excellent service. We always are. First time and it blew me away! Had the full breakfast with ham, poached eggs, potatoes, grits biscuit. Wow everything was so delicious! The biscuit was so good I couldn't stop eating it with the butter and tomato jam and had to order a second one! The grits were cheesy, buttery, so tasty. The ham was thick, and cooked perfectly. The potatoes were mixed with tomatoes and just so delicious. I took half of it home and enjoyed the rest for dinner. Loved my Bloody Mary - only complaint would be that it's pretty small and the bill added up because I had to have two. Otherwise the prices of the food are quite reasonable. Also, just $6 each, we had hot chicken, buttermilk biscuit, and a fried green tomato biscuit. I came here before and had a really great experience, which is why I decided to come back. This time was completely different. I sat at the bar and was basically ignored the entire time. I had to flag down a bartender just to place my order, and even then, my drink never came. No one checked on me, and I wasn't even offered water. What made it worse was watching other people who came in after me get full service, their drinks & food coming out promptly, while I was still sitting there waiting. I did eventually get my crab cake, but after that, I just asked for my check and left. I mentioned that I had been ignored, and the response was very minimal with no real concern, just a quick apology. I called afterward to speak with the manager, John, hoping for a better response, but that was just as frustrating. He brushed it off and said it was because they were busy, which didn't make sense considering everyone around me was being taken care of just fine. I don't like to jump to conclusions, but as the only Black woman sitting at the bar, it's hard not to notice when you're the only one not being served unless you speak up and even then, the effort felt minimal. Parking is a little challenging in the area because its street parking but they do validate parking if you park in the Simon Parking Garages they have a QR code you can use to do that. The ambiance is cozy and welcoming, with a charming decor that we later found out comes from the original home of the owner's aunt, Colleen--which makes it feel even more special and personal. My husband ordered the biscuits with gravy, which was listed on their website AND menu in-person as being $12. When we got the check, he was charged $20 for the biscuits with gravy. We realized this before paying and nicely mentioned it to our server. She was incredibly rude, acted like we were the ones incorrect. Refused to bring over the menu. Luckily, they did "honor" the price as she said to us - which was even more upsetting because it's like why are you acting like this was our fault?
