He did a nice menu tour after he seated us . The restaurant is darling . It's decorated in a cute 1940s cottage style . There are tons of old wedding pictures and vintage cake toppers paired with depression glass . The menu is small but precise. It hits all the vest southern dishes but does them with a modern take . We started with the crab fritters which were excellent. I had a nice grits and butternut squash dish. My friend had the redfish which looked amazing. The cocktail list was really nice and used all the local spirits. I had a fantastic bourbon coffee cocktail in a coupe glass that woke me right up . We went in for brunch on a Saturday afternoon and it was packed! We were able to be seated immediately because we lucked out on a reservation canceling. The host was so friendly and welcomed us with a smile. They have the scannable barcode menu but since it was a bit packed in here my and my fiancé's phone service wasn't great and they brought us a paper menu no problem. I ordered the iced tea, the Colleen's house punch and the Colleen's Cobb salad off their weekend brunch menu. My fiancé ordered a mezcal margarita (off menu as they have a full bar) and the avocado toast. The iced tea was refreshing and came with a lemon wedge and an optional sweetener on the side. Our waiter Josh so attentive and provided wonderful service, assured us our drinks were on the way after only a few minutes, and the drinks came very quickly. My fiancé loved his margarita and my punch was tiny but mighty and was delicious for only $5 that's a steal. Josh provided such great service, he was one of the most attentive waiters I've ever had. 5 star service! The salad was the most beautiful salad I've ever had and it was so fresh and delicious! While visiting Austin for a long weekend, I had dinner at Colleen's Kitchen with my cousins who live in the area. We made reservations which is pretty much a must due to the size of the place. It's super cute and they offer indoor and outdoor seating. Our server was Kailee and she was super great. My cousin's often get takeout from Colleen's kitchen, but this was their first time dining in and they were glad they did. Their menu had good looking options, from delicious looking appetizers, to robust salads and yummy entrees. We decided to just order entrees this evening. They both got the Steak Frites, I had the Pan Roasted Airline Chicken and their little one had the kid's Hamburger Meal. The food came out in a decent amount of time. Everyone enjoyed each bite of their meal. I never ever order roasted chicken and mashed potatoes, and I'm so glad I did, my meal was delicious. The flavors meshed together so well, and the gravy was a perfect touch. I needed a break from beef and pork. No one had room for dessert, but they had great options. This was an OK to Good lunch experience. I was told by a work colleague that I must order the shrimp & grits. Silly me I was persuaded to order the fried chicken instead. The fried chicken was delicious. It was not batter-heavy and the chicken was moist. Now, the biscuit gravy was just bland and did not compliment the chicken. I should asked for pepper and salt to spruce it up. My collared green side was plentiful and good (you can easily split sides). I did clean my plate! There was a bed of cold green beans and to be honest there was minimal taste and I would not have been disappointed if the chef had forgotten to plate them. Colleen's has a good selection of local craft beer options and interesting craft cocktails. Came here for happy hour with a friend last night and we tried the fried green tomatoes and crispy brussel sprouts. Both were good, I had never had fried green tomatoes before so I have nothing to compare them to but I think they were good just maybe not my thing. Colleen's is my family's favorite brunch spot in the Mueller area! We love to go after visiting the Thinkery or the lake/park. The food is so fresh and flavorful! Southern food at its best. My favorite item is the fried chicken and waffles. The chicken is cooked to perfection with just the right amount of crunch, and the waffle is to die for! The waffle is also shaped like the state of TX - super cute and creative! My husband got the shrimp and grits and absolutely loved his dish as well! I also appreciate the kid friendly atmosphere (+ dining options) and the classy mid-century modern decor + furniture. I also recommend ordering the bacon-wrapped dates as a starter. It's a small serving, probably best for 2 people, but the dates are delicious. If you are stopping for lunch, there are about five strong competing places within two or three doors of Colleen's Kitchen. * * * The high variability of this place means you almost have to rate each item individually. So here goes. * Fried Chicken - Three Stars. Moist. Pleasant. Not especially flavorful. But I was happy to have it. * Biscuit Gravy for said Fried Chicken - One Star. Absolutely tasteless. There is a reason that Southern Cooks use a lot of salt and black pepper in a gravy. Going yuppie and going light on the salt and black pepper totally kills the dish. * Carrots - Five Stars Fantabulous. They use multiple colors of carrots and just get a ton of flavor. I couldn't identify what other ingredients gave the carrots their oomph - but there was plenty of oomph. * Collard Greens - Four stars Their version uses a ton of sugar. It is like putting sugar on spinach to get kids to eat it. I can be bribed. * Green Beans - One Star Tasteless. Wasn't sure if I was eating asparagus or green beans. But it didn't matter, because I was eating green columns that had no recognizable flavor. * Service - Five Stars Mega-nice people. * * * The city of Austin does not have a lot of credible Southern style diners. I like Cafe 1431 in Cedar Park. That however is its own place with its own original dish menu. It is more Southern inspired than traditional Southern. (The original dishes totally rock though.) Threadgill's pretended to be Southern but was far more awful than people liked to admit. Colleen's Kitchen does not fill the void. But if you were to eat here enough, you would find the dishes that were good. Or you could talk to your very nice and helpful waitstaff and ask them to bring you a salt shaker and a pepper shaker. Massive salt and pepper won't take care of all of the problems here, but will help on some items. read more

Colleen's Kitchen is a southern inspired restaurant delivering refined yet uncomplicated fare. Colleen's Kitchen channels the spirit of a favorite aunt who created joy in every moment - unattached to preconceived notions and unfettered by convention. The last time I was here, I came with two other people for some shareable bites and cocktails. So, let's do this, shall we? Bacon-wrapped dates Bacon and Medjool dates are a brilliant pairing: The bacon is crisp and salty, and the date is chewy and deeply sweet. You could just stop there, of course, but adding in a soft blue cheese -- sharp and spicy -- adds another layer of texture and flavor and brings the two salty-sweet extremes together. As appetizers go, these are rich and substantive! Well done! Deviled Eggs I feel like I shouldn't have to explain this, but someone DID ask me what these eggs were after I posted another review about these types of eggs. Therefore, I will explain this time (and this time only), the term 'deviled' refers to something that is highly seasoned with spiciness or tang. Deviled eggs are the same thing as stuffed eggs or dressed eggs. It's essentially eggs that have been hard-boiled, peeled, cut in half, and stuffed with a classic mixture of the cooked yolks mashed together with mayo, mustard, and spices (typically paprika). Class dismissed! These bacon deviled eggs are the ultimate deviled eggs, which combined Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper and, of course, crispy bacon bits. Service The bartender we had was named Malcolm. I know my folks who read my reviews are thinking, "How did you recall a bartender's name from a year ago?" It's because I said something in French to one of the people I was with, and he responded to what I said in French, then we (Malcolm and I ) proceeded to have a full conversation in French. My First at Colleen's! Big tip- if you can't find parking there is a garage literally right next to the restaurant. The atmosphere is really nice- they had a nice playlist going. Staff was really nice and moderately attentive. I had the breakfast which was good. I am usually a sweet grits girl BUT the grits here were really good. I did not love the sausage gravy-not sure what was off but it was a no for me. Alrighty, I first gotta say that the Happy Hour here is pretty darn great! Between the drink and food deals, it's solid. Of course I had to try all three biscuits, because it's me. So here are my thoughts on each: Fried chicken biscuit: best one by far. The batter has a fantastic flavor and is the perfect crunch. It's not overpowering and greasy, and complements the juicy chicken inside. This one is a must. Country ham biscuit: this one is exactly as you would think it is. It's good, not great, but good enough. I think it's a good normal biscuit. Fried tomato biscuit: I think I would have liked this one more with less pimento cheese. It was essentially a pimento cheese biscuit. So if that's your thing, then you will be hyped. But it was mine unfortunately. This was a diamond in the dirt that I found when I was looking online for soul food on Trip advisor. This hidden gem is located in the Muller shopping strip surrounded by other restaurants and entertainment.. I ordered the buttermilk chicken, deviled Eggs and Mac and cheese and collards greens. The deviled Eggs were my favorite, and I dare to say they were some the best deviled Eggs that I've eaten.. The Mac & cheese was not far behind the deviled Eggs, the greens were very good as well... As for the service it gets 2 thumbs downs because the reason being is that when I walked in I felted as if I wasn't welcome, it felted more like I was walking into an establishment that wasn't for me. I say that because when I walked in there was a guy that greeted me who was pleasant and friendly and after explaining my issue with placing an order online two other guys came around as if I was about to become a problem, they didn't say anything or ask any questions. I felt as if I was in a retail store being confronted by loss prevention.... I tried placing an order online 2 times and both times, the order said confirmed but never got any confirmation.....It was very frustrating and inconvenient because I had timed it out and ended up waiting 25 minutes... We found this place after hitting up the thinkery museum. This place is kid friendly. They had crayons and a coloring menu page for your little one. They also have clean high chairs. Once we ordered, they knew to bring out our son's food first, which was a great approach as he was hungry, here is what we ordered and loved, for the little one we got him a grilled cheese with a side of mac & cheese. We had a business dinner this week at Colleen's Kitchen. Ten of us. We planned the menu so the options were fried chicken, chicken pot pie, cheese burger and shrimp and grits. The service was impeccable, John came by every so often to make sure we are ok. Our server was a lovely young woman who was attentive but not overbearing. My group stumble across Colleen's Kitchen after a day with our kids at the Thinkery. We stopped in and it's has a vintage southern vibe. There's even a patio with heaters which is nice for the beautiful weather in Austin. We got seated right away and the host accommodated us even with 2 large strollers we needed just in case our toddler needed to nap. Everything we ordered was amazing. We definitely all agreed that the fried chicken and waffles were our favorite. The chicken was nicely fried with a crispy skin. The waffle was fluffy and sweet and the fact it was shape like Texas was a nice touch to the dish. The biscuits and gravy was another hit. Walked in on a Saturday as a group of 5 and were able to get a seat at a cute round table indoors. This place is awesome for a weekend brunch spot - decorated so elaborately, very homey, kind of like... "grandma's kitchen" vibes haha. We got the grilled peach bread and cornbread to share, and additionally each got a biscuit - this was the perfect amount of food and we got the chance to try several staples! Country ham biscuit - comes with ham, goat cheese and tomato jam and the biscuit was so tasty! The goat cheese is herbed and a bit spicy too and the flavors were great. I only wish there were more tomato jam because it was so good! Grilled Peach Bread - this was SO good and unique! The bread was crunchy on the edges and soft inside, and it came with several components - pecans, streusel, a glaze, and of course peaches. I was surprised that the bread wasn't too sweet and it was a perfect balance with some of the sweeter toppings. highly recommend! Cornbread - out of the items we got, this was my least favorite but I still thought it was super good and worth getting if you're a cornbread fan. The skillet cornbread made it have edges which were crisped perfectly - I just thought the bread itself was a bit heavy and I couldn't eat more than one piece. The honey butter that it came with as well was very tasty and complemented the bread very well. Cockroach. Nightmarish, giant, flying cockroach. If you've ever lived in Austin, you know what I'm talking about. Texas Monthly calls them, "The World's Most Despicable Bug." Last night, September 8, 2024, I was eating at Colleen's with my adult daughter when she noticed a cockroach under the table. I looked and saw it - it was a big one. She jumped up and took a few steps away from the table. I found the host and told him that we had a cockroach situation at our table and pointed to the wall where the cockroach was traversing upwards. He sighed as if to say, "What fresh hell has arrived for me to deal with now," and walked away. My daughter and I stood around the table wringing our hands and wondering if we could just leave. We'd already ordered drinks and appetizers and were waiting for entrees. In retrospect I wish we'd just offered to pay for what we'd already consumed and left because our appetites were diminished, to put it mildly. The waitress came back to the table with a different gentleman who said that the cockroach, which was now close to the ceiling, was too high to do anything about, and that, "he got there as fast as he could." Okay, my dude. Information that did not need to be shared with your customer. Our waitress said she was new to Austin and had never seen such a large cockroach. We both exchanged stories about how gross they are, and that we are more afraid of them than venomous insects. For the next few minutes we monitored the cockroach to see what it would do next. The last thing I wanted was for it to land on our table. It finally flew across the room, we lost it for a few minutes, then it landed, the host returned, smashed it and scooped it up with a cloth napkin. I suggested to the waitress that we move to a different table. Something a bit further than the one where we'd just seen and heard the cockroach execution. The entrees arrived. I don't feel like I can review them fairly because I had lost my appetite, but feigned good spirits because I was trying to salvage what was left of the evening. No, we told our waitress, we did not want to order any dessert. The sight and sound of the cockroach crushing has possibly ruined redfish for me forever. The host brought us a cookie in a bag and said that we could eat it now or take it home and eat it later. One cookie. For two diners. To share? It went into the trash can immediately after we left the restaurant. We are now referring to it to it as the complimentary cockroach cookie. Three employees got involved and two more watched from behind the bar. The most remarkable part of this whole incident was how unbothered the entire staff seemed by this incident. I can only assume that this happens on a regular basis. No apologies given. No acknowledgment that our dining experience had been less than ideal. Gigantic cockroaches scaling the walls, for Colleen's staff, seemed old hat. Ew. We will not be returning. I emailed the restaurant to say that I thought the entire incident could have been handled with a bit more decorum on their part. I never received a response. It was so gross. read more

10 out of 10 brunch spot On my trip to Texas, we came here for a nice brunch before walking over to the Thinkery. I'd have to say this was one of my best eating experiences in Texas. I want to start off with how friendly the customer service was. There was a mix-up in our reservation scheduling but they made sure to rectify it and get us in on time. We also brought a baby and they had a high chair waiting at the table. As for food, we tried a ton of food and there was not one miss. I will write my rankings of everything we received below, but I just want to triple mention that everything tasted so good. We thought the little biscuits were fun. Little slider options with homemade biscuits as the buns so we decided to have one of each. Highly recommend trying multiple things on the menu. We also had to go with shrimp and grits as a staple... and I am a large fan of bacon wrapped dates so we got those as starter. They were so good.
