Wow. Brisket melted, just melted in your mouth. I don't think I needed to chew. Very moist and tasty. Ribs were good as were the sides and sausage. They designed an old church with mostly outdoor seating but decent amount of indoor seating. The place isn't large by Texas standards. We went off peak around 2pm ish and didn't wait long to order. Staff were helpful and friendly.

For my first bbq place to go in Texas, I chose it to be Micklethwait so I had high expectations! I came about a hour before closing so a few items including some of the sides ran out. I got the 3 meats and 2 sides platter. I had their brisket, pulled pork, and cheesy link sausage. For the sides I had Cole slaw and potato salad. I definitely enjoyed everything I had, my favorite was the sausage!

I enjoyed my time at Micklethwait Barbecue. The place wasn't that busy when I went which is definitely nice. Most barbecue spots in Austin have crazy long lines and run out of food when you arrive. So I enjoyed going to a spot that was more laid back. The service was fantastic. They have nice seating options both indoors and outdoors. The outdoor seating gives you that authentic Austin feel as if you are sitting in a coffee shop. The food was solid. I tried the 3 meat and 2 sides plate with brisket, pulled lamb, sausage, beans and Mac & cheese. The sausage by far was my favorite. The pulled lamb was different, which I enjoyed. You just don't see this as an option offered on most menus. Overall, it was a great experience!

I have had Micklethwait bookmarked since it was a food truck so it has to be a couple of years. Well, today was the day that I could unbook mark Micklethwait and a gorgeous day to take advantage of their plentiful outside seating/dining area. I arrived at approximately 1300 and there was not a line hopefully meaning that the meat was still on the menu and not sold out. I ordered the Tex-Czech sausage, Pork Spareribs, and Moist Beef Brisket with Mac and Cheese and Braised Greens with Bacon for my sides. Tex-Czech sausage is house-made and is quite flavorful with a snap that I love. The Pork Sparerib was perfectly smoked with a nice rub and I love it when I can chew the grisle without loosening teeth. The Moist Beef Brisket was perfect with a nice smoke ring and the bark was perfect and flavorful. All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed my lite afternoon snack and I will definitely be back to check out the lamb and some of their other house-made sides like the Lemon-Poppy Slaw and Citrus Beet Salad.

This place is underrated in a city with many barbeque options. The prices were of great value and didn't disappoint. The brisket was moist, Smokey, well seasoned and traditional to most briskets in the area. The sausage had a good snap to it, peppery and Smokey. The ribs had a good bite to it, and wasn't fall off the bone but the bone came out clean. I must say though, the jalapeño cheese grits was a nice change up for sided offerings. The smoked duck and sausage gumbo was also delicious and still tasted great when I took it home to reheat as I had ordered too much food. Their smoked lamb shoulder was moist and was absolutely a must have if available as it was the special that day. The location is nice, parking is a little limited but they had great indoor and outdoor seating options. The service was excellent and they operated quickly for taking and delivering orders.

We came to Micklethwait from multiple friends' recommendations during our week-long trip San Antonio to Austin. It was fantastic! For 2 people, we ordered the brisket, pork ribs, cheesy hot link, with mac n cheese and green beans sides. I normally don't prefer dry rub ribs, but they were amazing, so flavorful. The green beans were also perfect and a great tangy compliment to the meats. We were really impressed by the cheesy hot link - it was staff-recommended since they're known for their sausages. We came in around noon on a Friday, and we waited a bit to order but not long - and the food is prepared immediately. Staff were so friendly, helpful and welcoming - we would definitely return for the service (and the food). The indoor and outdoor seating areas are both really nice - great space for groups. Parking was also not hard to find on their street. The flavors of Micklethwait were really unforgettable, and we hope to return soon!

As always, Micklethwait continues to be a solid choice for bbq in Austin, especially if you want indoor seating and a quickly moving line. Plenty of parking in the lot and nearby neighborhood roads. You get in, wait in line if needed, order at the counter, and then wait for your food. My fiancé and I live close by and have gone over a few times to grab a lunch special on Thursdays or Fridays ($15 for a bbq meat sandwich, a side, and a sweet tea). The food is so tasty and fresh, and always consistently good! The only confusing part is sometimes they've given the side in essentially a Dixie cup (super super small) and other times in a plastic container (still small, but enough for one person). Either way, this place is solid and dependable and I will definitely be back!

I've been enjoying Micklethwait Craft Meats for years, and this past fall when my wife and I were planning our wedding reception, we contacted Micklethwait about catering. The whole process was so easy and they did an amazing job bringing in all of the food for our guests. It was great to have a selection of brisket, sausage, and turkey, as well as delicious sides: Campfire Chili Beans, Herbed Potato Salad, Mac and Cheese, and Farmers Market Green Salad. Plus, they brought in fantastic banana pudding for dessert. I would 100% book them for an event, again, and I look forward to my next lunch at Micklethwait!

This is one of my favorite bbq spots in Austin and I've tried almost all of them the line wasn't too long and went really quick! They have such a large selection of items and everything we ordered was delicious! The atmosphere is also very nice with a nice outdoor dining area. So glad this place got an official home in Austin!

We showed up at 11am on a Friday, fully expecting to have to struggle to find parking and to have to wait in a line for who knows how long. But that wasn't the case at all! We just parked in the front and were able to immediately make our way to the front counter. In fact, the workers there had to wait on us while we chose which menu items we wanted. For those reasons above, Micklethwait is already worth the visit because you save so much time. But the food is really good too! I will say, it's not the best bbq I've ever had in my life with items that make your jaw drop. But it's a really solid place to go when you're craving some reliable bbq! And I really love the plate options. I came with one friend, and although there weren't many of us, we wanted to try a bunch of different meats and sides without going overboard. So we were able to get two 2 meat plates, meaning we were able to try 4 meats and 4 sides without breaking the bank. And we still had lots to take home with us too. The jalapeño cheddar sausage actually might be my favorite meat that we tried! Followed by the ribs, and then the brisket and pulled lamb. I do wish the brisket and pulled lamb were a little juicier, but both were still really good. And the mac n cheese, beet salad, and cheesy grits are all sides I would get again. The bread it comes with is also homemade and is so so yummy. Plus the workers were so friendly. Even when we were leaving, they remembered us by name when they said goodbye.

Finally got around to checking Micklethwait out. It's a little off the beaten path, which meant there were only 4-5 people ahead of me in line when I pulled up on Sunday morning, when they opened at 11 am. Was a little disappointed to learn that they no longer sell tacos but the Frito Pie made up for it.

Three 3-Meat (Brisket, Pork Spare Ribs, Sausage) with Mac & Cheese and Lemon Poppy Cole Slaw

TLDR: Charming East Austin spot with friendly service. Solid food across the board for a fair price; great house bread/pickles are a nice touch. Very good, but not quite a destination. Overview: Micklethwait Barbecue (the "th" is silent) brings classic Central Texas barbecue vibes to a charming little chapel-like spot in East Austin. From the gravel garden patio with lush plants to the minimalist interior with wood floors and sleek ceiling fans, the setting is relaxed and welcoming. There's a small parking lot plus plenty of street parking, and the service, which was warm, attentive, and never overbearing, is genuinely A+. They offer some additional practical perks as well: big self-serve water jugs and bug spray for patio diners. Food: I went for the three-meat plate (brisket, spare ribs, and a Tex-Czech sausage) with lemon-poppy coleslaw and mac & cheese, plus banana pudding for dessert. Prices are fair for Austin right now: brisket $34/lb, ribs $30/lb, sausage $27/lb, sides $6/8 oz, and the three-meat plate at $28. The brisket is the headliner: peppery bark, juicy slices with nicely rendered fat, and clean beef flavor. The spare ribs were flavorful and very juicy, just a bit tougher than ideal. The Tex-Czech sausage had a satisfying snap and good seasoning, though the interior was a bit dense/tough. Both sides were great: the lemon-poppy slaw was bright and refreshing (great palate reset between bites of smoke), and the mac & cheese tasted like a well-executed homemade version that is comforting and not bland. Also, don't skip the in-house bread; it's genuinely good enough to eat on its own, and their pickles are crisp and tangy, the kind of small detail that elevates a tray. The banana pudding is a simple, from-scratch take with Nilla wafers and whipped cream; I'd prefer it to be a bit more banana-forward, but it was still a pleasant finish. Final Thoughts: This is a very strong, very Austin barbecue experience: excellent brisket, well-made sides, thoughtful little touches, and warm service in a beautiful, low-key setting. While not every bite hit "destination" level for me, the overall quality and value make it an easy recommendation, especially if you want classic Central Texas barbecue executed with care.

I recently visited Austin and stopped by Micklethwait for some bbq. It did not disappoint! There was a little bit of a line, but the line was only inside (I was told it routinely flows outside on busy days). The line moved quickly, so we got to the front in no time. While we were waiting, I enjoyed peeking at everyone's tables to see what they had ordered. Everything looked and smelled incredible! By the time we got to the front of the line, they had run out of pulled lamb and Mac n cheese. We were surprised because we arrived about an hour and a half after opening! We ordered brisket, pork ribs, sausage, and sides of beans, grits, and slaw. We really wanted Mac n cheese but because it was sold out, we couldn't get it. The food was incredible. The brisket melted in my mouth, the rib meat fell off the bone, and the sausage was smoky and perfectly seasoned. The sides were also delicious: the beans had a hint of spice, the slaw was refreshing, and the grits were amazing. The free pickles were also really good. While we were eating, an employee mistakenly brought an order of Mac n cheese to our table (they had cooked another batch). We reluctantly told her that she had the wrong table, and a few minutes later, she came back and gave us a free side of Mac n cheese. It was amazing!! The inside of the restaurant is clean and comfortable with beautiful plants. There is also outdoor seating and plenty of street parking. I HIGHLY recommend this place if you're in the mood for some bbq in Austin!

As a recipient of the prestigious Texas Monthly Top 100 BBQ Award, the expectations were high--and for the most part, they were met. The venue itself provides a fantastic, relaxed vibe, complete with plenty of TVs and a music stage, making it the perfect spot for chilling out on a lazy afternoon or settling in for an evening hang. The Main Event: Pitmaster Excellence The true test of a Texas BBQ joint is the holy trinity, and here, they nailed the fundamentals: * Brisket: This was Texas BBQ as it should be. The brisket was super juicy, delivered a profound, deep flavor, and possessed a flawless, great bark that spoke to hours of skillful smoking * Spare Ribs: A study in contrast and texture. The ribs offered a satisfying "good pull"--firm enough to bite but still falling cleanly off the bone. The thick, peppery bark was beautifully balanced by a slight sweetness from a pepper jelly glaze, adding a layer of sophisticated flavor you don't always find. * Pork Belly Burnt Ends: These were pure decadence. Each bite provided a delicious, melt-in-your-mouth experience with a distinct and welcome hint of Fierce Whiskers bourbon woven into the smoky, fatty flavor. They are so rich and irresistible, you know you shouldn't eat too many, but good luck stopping. * Jalapeño and Cheese Sausage: This locally sourced link brought the heat with a good level of spice. The flavor was excellent, though the texture leaned slightly toward the processed side, which was the only minor drawback among the meats. The Supporting Cast: Sides A great plate of BBQ requires sides that stand up to the meat, and while two of these were stars, one needs a little work. * Mac & Cheese: An absolute winner. It was cheesy, creamy, and featured an excellent smoked flavor that permeated the dish. The slightly charred edges added a delightful textural counterpoint. * Hash Brown Casserole: This was a surprisingly strong contender, offering a nice assembly of savory flavors. The secret weapon was the corn flake topping, providing an unexpected but welcome crunch, complemented by a satisfying hint of bacon. * Creamed Corn: Unfortunately, this side was the weakest link. It tasted primarily bland, despite a slight peppery note. It desperately needs some fresh jalapeños mixed in to cut through the creaminess and add the essential Texas kick. Final Verdict The meat selection here is truly Top 100 worthy, excelling in technique, flavor, and execution (especially the Brisket and Burnt Ends). The atmosphere is perfect for a relaxed gathering. While the Creamed Corn missed the mark, the stellar Hash Brown Casserole and Smoked Mac & Cheese prove that their side game is usually strong. Come for the high-quality, authentic Texas barbecue, stay for the great outdoor patio.

This spot was close to my hotel, and on my departure day, I decided to have one last hit of Q. It's a big restaurant, and it appears to also be quite the music venue. When I went, a little on the early side for a Friday dinner, there was not a wait and I was sat immediately. My server was attentive, and got me in, fed, and back out in plenty of time to catch my already delayed flight. I ordered their 3 meat combo plate, which also came with two sides, and added on a piece of cornbread. I chose brisket of course, as well as turkey and sausage. The server recommended the serrano pepper spinach (like a creamed spinach) and onion rings, and I took those recs. The best of the three meats was the turkey. Not a good sign. It was moist and tender, though not particularly smokey. Even so, I enjoyed it more than the brisket and sausage, which I would have guessed the reverse when ordering. The brisket was on the dry side and kind of bland, it did not smack of being freshly carved. The Stubbs BBQ sauce helped me eat some of it... now I see why they are famous for their sauce. I had a couple bites of the sausage and pushed it aside, I didn't enjoy their recipe on that at all. It was cooked seemingly well, but the blend of spices and meat they use wasn't pleasant to me. The sides, the onion rings were very crispy which I like, but again... something in the batter. Maybe even the oil they were cooked in, I did not enjoy as much. The spinach was actually quite enjoyable, maybe even a little rich. I think if it were warmer, if might help milden out some of that. It was really thick. The cornbread wasn't worth the add-on. No sweetness or anything to make it memorable. Vessel for butter. The portion was massive, and I had leftover food, but did not take it... and that would have been the case even if I wasn't headed to the airport. I wouldn't recommend this spot.

When I tell you these ribs were a religious experience I am not embellishing. Take this review as someone who really enjoys BBQ (and any slow cooked meat for that matter) but who could not list more than 10 BBQ restaurants they have eaten at in the last 5 years. So the beef ribs. Great texture, tender meat but still had a bite to it. Expertly seasoned so they were not wet with sauce but still moist. I would consider 1 beef rib a snack, 2 a small meal. I also tried the chopped brisket (brisket and burnt ends sitting in a soup of BBQ sauce). That was also delicious (and more reasonably priced), but I could have done with slightly less sauce. It really was like a soup and while the sauce was tasty, there was too much of it. I went later in the afternoon (around 2/2:30pm) and got their last two beef ribs so going earlier is better. You order at the open kitchen and then pay at the counter when your food is ready. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, you can take your food and sit at any of their tables of which they have many (this place is pretty big). For fifteen people, the total cost was $425.69. This included delivery costs and taxes, but no tip. It consisted of three meats, two sides, and a dessert along with pickles, onions, bread, and BBQ sauce. There was also a set of utensils delivered, but plates were forgotten, but not a big deal. Brisket - This was definitely the best item eaten of the day. It was tender and juicy while adding the BBQ sauce giving that extra bite. The BBQ sauce was great regardless, a little bit of sweet and smoky flavor going on. Pulled Pork - This was another solid meat choice. I did not think it was as tender as the brisket, but it was still enjoyable especially with that BBQ sauce, which was key throughout the meal. Sausage - This was not bad. The snap on this threw me off a little, but it was not too bad. They were large links and had plenty of flavor. Gouda Mac & Cheese with Smoked Bacon - This was actually penne pasta with little pieces of the bacon. I actually preferred this pasta choice here. It really soaked up the cheese sauce. The sauce was not too over powerful and was just right. Beans with Smoked Bacon - These were not too bad. I thought they were a little liquidity, but the added bacon pieces definitely helped. Banana Pudding - This came in individual cups, which was nice. The pudding was thick with a little meringue or whipped cream present and a few wafer cookies on top. It was a satisfying ending to a very good meal. Will I go back? Yes.
