Brisket

Anytime I fly into Austin, one thing is certain, we're going to Terry Black's Barbecue. The line may look long, it likely will be, but it actually moves through pretty quick. Amazing Texas bbq and people don't talk about the sides enough. Always grab some of the beans, Mac n cheese, and green beans. This time around the wife and I split 1lb of sliced brisket, cheddar and jalapeño sausage, and a beef rib. Brisket and beef rib were cooked to perfection. Enough cook for it to be fall off the bone soft but enough chew to pull from. Big patio and dining hall to get a seat. People tend to come with friends/family but they also move generally quick, just keep your eyes out after you pay for your food. Staff is super friendly, they also will help guide you to possible areas to sit,

This is one of the most popular barbecue restaurants in Austin. They have a very unique system of making order through the counter. then paying. then taking a table in a seating area. They have both indoor and outdoor seats. When we came to the place, it was almost full. But the staff members were really nice to find us a table as we had a handicapped guest with us. For the side, we picked rice, mac and cheese, coleslaw, and corn. They were available in three different sizes. All the sides were really delicious. Especially loved the coleslaw. From the butcher station, we picked beef brisket, pork ribs, and chopped beef. They were sold by the pound and were very expensive. The brisket and pork ribs were excellent, but the chopped beef wasn't as good as the other two. The indoor dining space is a bit cramped. There were two soda machines, but each time we had to wait in line to get to refill or get water. By the time we were done, the line was out through the door. I also noticed the big furnace shed they had outside, where they were cooking all the meats. Hats off to the employees who were working in that super hot room. Overall a really fantastic spot to enjoy bbq.

Somewhat chaotic inside when you get the food and try to find a table. When we got there, the line was out of the door. You can only get a table after you get your food. They have indoor and outdoor seating. I really like the beef ribs. It's soft and tender. Great flavor. Brisket and pork ribs are ok. Brisket is dry for me. The corn with cheese is so good. Mexican rice is fluffy. mac&cheese are nicely made, cheesy and cooked properly. They sell the drinks while you are on the line waiting (cotton candy soda and beer). You don't need to get it. More options when you get to the final pay counter, such as fountain soda. Right next to the pay counter is the drink machine and all the utensils. Very crowded at the area cuz everyone trying to get a drink. Very tight between tables. Women Bathroom has 2 or 3 stalls. You can see the grill outside. It's super hot. Parking lot on site but it's very crazy, go early to get a spot.

Food 5/5 Service 5/5 Ambiance 4.5/5 Terry Black's always leaves me speechless every time I eat there. Which is a grand total of two times, but that's really saying something, especially since the second time was during a long-overdue homecoming to Austin. There's a lot of competition as to what BBQ joint is the best in Austin, let alone Texas, and Terry Black's is a strong contender. There's always a long line winding out of the door onto their porch, and but it moves fast - you'll get your fix in no time, and when you do, you'll know the wait was worth it. This time around, I got a beef rib - huge, tender, beautifully seasoned, and all mine. Accompanied with some sausage and brisket (because I can't come to a BBQ place and not get either), plus some amazing cornbread, cream corn, and mac and cheese, I was feasting like a king. The first time I went here, I had many leftovers... this time, there were practically none. I'm a firm believer and supporter of Terry Black's, and this was a solid reminder of what I left when I moved out of Texas. If you get the lucky chance to dine here - take it. You won't regret the money you spend here.

We arrived at 10:20am & there were 6 cars sitting in the parking lot already. We all stayed in our cars until about 10:27am then we formed a line for their 10:30am opening time. We had to sample all the meats: pork ribs, brisket, turkey, sausage. The meat is weighed & you order per pound. Actually everything was very tender & well seasoned! The turkey was a little drier than I expected but still very flavorful and the brisket could have used more flavor for me. The pork ribs were my favorite. There is a decent choice of side items & we tried the coleslaw, green beans & pinto beans which were all good. The greens beans, although à la dente, were full of flavor. The peach cobbler was decent. I enjoyed the crust, When we left at 11:15am there still wasn't a line. But it was a Tuesday & back to school week so my experience may not be the norm. I look forward to trying the new Terry Black's in The Heights in Houston.

Back here for the first time in a couple years. Never disappointed. It's expensive, but well worth it. Beef rib is my favorite, the seasoning is amazing.

Food is served to order and a bit overwhelming. The ladies at the sides were very no nonsense. The ribs were the star of the show, but the original sausage was also amazing. The brisket was good, but I was expecting a bit more. Someone was leaving so we were able to get thru table otherwise it likely would have been a while. It was packed on a Thursday night. Highly recommend the green beans!

Where should I begin? The infamous Terry Blacks is one of the most talked about BBQ spots in Austin and everyone says you MUST eat there when in the area. Since it was my first time in Austin, I had to listen to them. We took an uber from our hotel and to the restaurant and couldn't believe how insanely crowded it was. The lined wrapped around the side of the building, every single table outside was filled with people eating huge piles of meat from plastic trays in the sweltering heat. Stacks of white bread piled high, plastic squirt bottles of bbq sauce, and bottles of beer lined the picnic style tables too. There are QR codes everywhere telling you to scan to learn how to order. That alone is anxiety inducing. When you look up the info, it shows options for sides and desserts and then listed "slice, rib, link" as the 3 options for the meats. I took this to assume we'd order the brisket by the slice, ribs by the rib, and sausage by the link. It did not say anything about bread or sauces or drinks. The line moved surprisingly quickly and before I knew it I was being yelled at "NEXT NEXT NEXT!" We opted for the Mac and cheese, potato salad, and coleslaw as our sides. Desserts should also be ordered in the same spot ( it wasn't clear) so we both did the peach cobbler. Once your tray is stacked with sides, you move onto the disorganized meat line - which somehow only appeared disorganized and was in fact very orderly. The meat guys, while quick, were a little friendlier and didn't yell. This is also where I saw the soft drink cups and figured drinks could be ordered there. The condiments ( sauces) and plasticwear is all available inside. My coworker was able to snag an outdoor table, which made the experience a lot better. The brisket was melt in your mouth tender, juicy, and so flavorful. Possibly the best brisket I've ever had. I tried the bbq sauce with the yellow cap, which was sweet, and the perfect addition to the brisket. Once the other hand, the pork rib was not super tender and was a little bit of a let down. The jalapeño cheddar sausage was also dry. As for the sides, the potato salad was nothing like traditional potato salad and the potatoes were undercooked. They were cubed and very dill forward, which I'm not used to. The Mac and cheese was another let down. While it wasn't bad, it was not what I'd expect from a Michelin rated bbq. I didn't try the Coleslaw but I heard it was good. My dining partner said the peach cobbler reminded her of a McDonald's apple pie, and once she said it I couldn't get it out of my head. I did enjoy it though. The price for 4 slices of brisket, 1 rib, 1 sausage link, a single side of potato salad, single of coleslaw, and a double of Mac and cheese, and two peach cobblers was $89 plus tax and tip. Next time I'm in Austin I will definitely try bbq, but probably somewhere less famous.

I opted for Terry Black's for my Texas BBQ feast because they're open until 9 PM and, thankfully, there was no crazy long wait. There was a line, but it moved pretty quickly. The staff were all very friendly. Parking is limited, so we took an Uber, we noticed a small hut in the parking lot with giant BBQ smokers. We asked the guy in charge about them, and he was so nice and took the time to explain how they smoke their brisket and ribs. He even opened one of the smokers so we could take a peek! Such a cool behind-the-scenes experience. We ordered: Sliced Brisket -- $39.98/lb Loved the burnt ends! That burnt caramelized part was my favorite. Pork Ribs -- $32.98/lb Quite moist and nicely smoked Jalapeño Cheddar Sausage -- $30/lb Not my favorite. Sides & Dessert: Green Beans, Coleslaw -- okay Baked Beans -- lovely! Cornbread -- kind of dry Pecan Pie -- nice and a good way to finish the meal Overall, a fun Texas BBQ experience, especially getting to see the smokers up close and chat with the staff. Check your bill! We were accidentally charged for our beers twice. I didn't know that till I writing my Yelp review.

The.barb-q ribs were fantastic. I got the pork and two was enough for new! They were meaty! I didn't like the brisket. It was too dry. The original bbq sauce is fantastic. The lines move pretty quickly. About 15 minutes by the time you can order.

Terry Black's BBQ definitely hit the spot. I was visiting Austin and wanted to get a taste of Texas BBQ and Terry Black's BBQ definitely did it's thing. I stopped midday during the week and the place was packed. I get the feeling that they are probably always busy but they do a great job of keeping the lines moving. The space is huge with plenty of seating inside and out and has a warm, casual cabin like feel. When you walk in you're greeted and directed into a cafeteria style line where you choose your sides first. From there, another worker directs you toward one of several lines for your meat options. Once you get to the counter you tel them what you want and they cut the meat right there in front of you. It's a very cool set up and unique service and adds to the full experience. Once i checked out the next adventure was finding a seat. I thought that would be difficult given how busy and crowded they were but they do a pretty good job of clearing tables and I found one pretty easily. Now to the food! I had the green beans, mac and cheese and a BBQ sandwich and I enjoyed everything. The sandwich was the highlight. The meat was juicy, full of flavor and so filling that it was hard to make it through the sides. I enjoyed the mac and cheese so much that I bought small container to go. lol Overall the food was good and the atmosphere was casual and welcoming and I really enjoyed myself. i would definitely go back for and stop by again next time I'm in Austin. : ) P.S. I was surprised about how pricey lunch was for me. I think I spent around 30 dollars but it was worth it for the trip.

First time to Black's BBQ. Luckily I went with a friend who knew the run down on ordering and the process that allows them to funnel so many people through in a short period of time. Parking is the worst part of this whole place. However, after eating here... the walk back to the car is a good thing. I've been to Austin many times and have had my share of BBQ. This is one of the more spendy places... but for the QUALITY and amount you get, it's actually prices about right. There are other places in the area who charge just as much for less and very bland meats. This place is very busy. BE READY to order your side dishes. They don't mess around and they will push you through... which I think is GREAT! Move the line... I'm hungry! You have ample opportunity to figure out what side and size you want... be ready. Interior decor is right up there with your typical BBQ place. It's fun, cozy, and enhances the experience. Definitely one of my new favorites in the realm of BBQ.

This is definitely a great BBQ stop when you're in Austin. All the times I have gone have been phenomenal, except this last time where the meat was very chewy and it seemed kind of old. Nonetheless, the sides were great

Ask the Community - Terry Black's Barbecue

Are their onions in the potato salad?

I've had their Potato Salad, but don't recall if there were onions. It was delicious.

Are we able to order half a pound of meat?

Yes, and it's delicious 🤤

Can we sit outside with our dog?

It is difficult because is very crowded

Is the food here safe for someone with a Soy allergy?

Sorry , I don't know . Call them (512) 394-5899

If I order online for pick up, Do I need to fall in the regular long line like anybody else or do they have a separate line for pick up?

No, there is a separate line for pre order pickups.

Is there a play area?

Nope. But there is outdoor seating.

Do you get your beef from creekstone?

You want it from Creekstone? They get it from CK. They get it so damn good from CK. Don't doubt.

Is it a dine in restaurant? If so can you handle a party of 8 on Wednesday evening? Thanks.

It is a dine in. Plenty of seating for groups of 8.

What's the brand of the sliced bread?

Looks like Wonderbread to me.

Anyone eat here on a Friday night around 5pm? Are there still food options around that time? How long is the wait time?

Lisa, I ate there on Friday around 4:00 pm with almost no wait time. Full selection of food options. Nothing sold out. Not sure if you're able to go a bit earlier then 5:00 pm. Beat the rush... Enjoy!

Hi, how long is the wait for Saturday afternoon now?

I would expect to wait at anytime but the line always moves quickly. Finding a seat to eat may be difficult depending on your group size.

What time should we get in line in the morning if we want to be amongst the first people in line?

When we visited, we waited in the parking lot just under an hour, but an actual line didn't start to form until about 15 minutes before!

Do they typically run out of items in the evening (after 7pm)?

Yes

After I wait in line, order and get my food, is it easy to find a seat? Are there lots of seats, inside or outside?

It is so easy to find a spot! People eat and move very fast, they don't stay too long

What's the wait time like on a Monday? Trying to gauge what time we should line up for lunch.

Roughly 20-30 minutes, it gets packed early. The lone moves pretty quick though and well worth the wait!

Do they take reservations?

No, you stand in line to order your food and then sit down. There is no wait staff. Line moves pretty fast and the food is worth your time

Are dogs allowed inside whiling eating and ordering?

Not inside but they can sit on the patio. I keep my dog in the car with the AC on and when I have my food and table then I bring him out of the car if I'm by myself

We have a layover between flights and would be in Austin between 2pm-6pm on a Friday. How long usually is the wait during during these times? Is it possible to come here, eat then get back to the airport?

by the time you get out of the airport, deal with Austin traffic to get over there, maybe wait 15 to 30 minutes in line, eat, get back to the airport, deal with TSA, be at the boarding area, sounds like more aggravation and stress than I would want.…

As of late, what has the wait time been?

Sometimes zero, sometimes 20 minutes depending on the crowd. Could be longer. If you go in middle of afternoon on a week day it's not that busy. Weekends can be longer as people with guests come by and line can be out the door. Nothing like…

What is in the Black Margarita? And can I buy the margarita mix somewhere?

This was awesome as we had a few bbq quotes that STATED that we could not keep the leftover food! Overall, our experience with them far exceeded our expectations and I would recommend them for your catering needs!

They had live music and more going on this weekend. I got their butter burger and fries with a big October fest beer from Blue Owl Brewery. The burger was as delicious as I remembered it to be. The fries are crispy. I just wish the fries were salted a little more. I also got their delicious snickers in a jar dessert. It is amazing, I would love more peanuts the service was fast and friendly. I highly recommend Banger's the next time you visit Austin for any reason. They won't disappoint you.

We ordered a salmon salad for me and the wild boar sausage for the hubby with a side of beer. The salad came out before my husband's order. What I liked -- it was generous serving of greens, cranberries, and pumpkin seeds. The salmon, which was not warm, was tender and not overcooked; it wasn't as big as expected though. Basically, it was a solid salad. The sausage was huge and came with a piece of flatbread and some pickled veggies. The sausage was unique and flavorful. Overall, I think this is a good place especially when you're with a large crowd.
