They gave us a good estimated time when we can get a table. The waiting area could expand to accommodate more people who are waiting though. We ordered an udon and some sushi. Their prices are on the expensive end, however, the quality of the food didn't quite justify price. The broth for the udon was only so-so, the udon itself was too soggy. The friendly and attentive staff service, the traditional sunken Japanese booths for a more private dining, the taste of the sushi and variety of food options Wow I can go on and on. Personally I got two Philadelphia rolls and the Tower which were delicious! I usually am not a big Sake drinker but I was able to find the apple sake which I absolutely loved! My partner got the Yakisoba which he devoured and helped me a little with the Mochi ice cream dessert. The portions are big and filling and the vibe of the place is peaceful. Ichiban has become my favorite sushi place. I first found out about it years ago when I worked at Restaurant Depot and have loved it ever since. The food is absolutely too notch and so is the service. I love the seating area where you can choose to sit at a Japanese style table and sit on pillows instead of chairs. The staff is super cool and friendly and never leaving you wanting or wondering about your food. My boyfriend and I agreed that you really can't go wrong when ordering anything from the menu. I always try to come on an empty stomach so I can eat a good amount of sushi, haha...it's THAT good. This last time around I tried the sake margarita and it was a 10/10, the size was actually bigger than I expected but I was thrilled it only being $7. I decided to stop by here late Wednesday afternoon because Mom and I wanted to try someplace different. We figured that if this place had been here for years, they must be doing something right. We immediately noticed how seriously they were taking COVID precautions, with hand sanitizer up front, a warning that the cushions for the booth had been removed, and a sign-in sheet for contact tracing. We also noticed that everything was brought out separately and/or wrapped up for our protection -- even my iced tea spoon. The best part of the meal was clearly the service. Everyone, especially our server, was nice and beyond willing to handle special requests. If there was any fault to the service it was that the order came out in a very weird progression between the sashimi, sushi, appetizers, and my entree. As for the food, it was definitely a mixed bag from a very expansive menu of Japanese and Korean options. Mom enjoyed her avocado rolls and the salmon avocado rolls, but was less enamored with the salmon sashimi. The edamane was good, but the salt was unevenly distributed. I liked the tempura fried mushrooms which were crispy without being overly oily or greasy. Same for the beef gyoza dumplings, which were a nice change of pace from the usual pork option. My teriyaki beef was a bit lacking. The beef was cut into cubes and the teriyaki sauce was sparse and lacking in flavor -- in other words the sweet and salty contrast wasn't there. It was basically like oddly seasoned bits of steak. Honestly, the food is/was a mixed bag. But everyone is so nice there and the place is so spotlessly clean that I'd almost be willing to give them another chance. read more

Honestly we came here just because we wanted shabu shabu even though this place isn't specifically know for that. Regardless we were pleasantly surprised that it was pretty good! For our appetizer we had the Play Boy roll which we demolished in a matter of minutes. Fish was fresh and the roll was very well done. I'm definitely going to come back to try more of the rolls. Then came the shabu shabu. Really good amount of vegetables, tofu and glass noddles for two. The shabu shabu itself was excellent. My only few gripes is that they should have an option for miso flavored broth. To us the traditional miso is too bland. However the waitress was nice enough to hook us up with some miso paste to add to the soup and OMG what a world of difference. There should be options for miso and spicy miso flavored broths for their shabu and charge a few extra dollars. Also the beef was good but I think it's sliced a little too thin. I think they could be a little more generous as they charge $30 for this. Other than that we really enjoyed it. We will definitely be back here for our fix of shabu shabu and we have to try the other items on the menu too! read more

I arrived around 5:30 on a Wednesday when it wasn't too busy. I let my server know that I was going to order more food after finishing my first dish. As soon as I finished my glass of wine, another server asked if I wanted to order another drink. I said that I needed to glance at the drink menu first. At this point the restaurant was almost full. About 45 minutes later my server had still not stopped by my table to check. I couldn't even flag someone down to pay out. Let me start with the positives. I like the koi pond out front. The booths are a cool idea. We got complimentary miso soup and edamame. As for the food...we got a 15 piece sashimi platter and the playboy roll. The roll was just okay. The sashimi platter featured tuna, salmon, yellowtail, Seabass, and escarole. Sadly, the best tasting piece of fish on the platter was the escarole. And really, nobody should be eating this fish. The tuna and salmon were nearly flavorless, an experience I've never had with these fish before. I can't recommend this restaurant for the food. However, if you still plan on going, I would not get any of the sashimi or nigiri. The rolls should be fine, I would be tempted to go for cooked items though. I love the decorations at the restaurant. Some of their tables are similar to those traditional Japanese tables that are very low. They also have a shoe rack, so you can take off your shoes when you sit at those traditional tables. The sushi and food are all pretty solid, the rolls and nigiri that my group got were all good. Came here for lunch with a friend and was incredibly disappointed with the speed of service. We had about an hour for lunch, but they were fairly empty and didn't think that would be a problem. Not the case. My friend received her roll about 10-15 minutes after we placed our order, yet I was not given any part of my meal or given a timeline as to when I could expect it. After 45 minutes rolled around and I still had not heard or received anything, so I requested my order to go. It still took about 15-20 minutes for them to bring my food in a to-go container and we were late for our appointment. I ordered part of the lunch special during a time when they were not busy and it took over an hour to receive my meal. I was not able to eat for another two hours as a result. I've been here before and had a great experience, but after this trip I will not be back. I love Ichiban as my go-to sushi place in Austin since it has a traditional Japanese atmosphere and aesthetic. You are give booths for your dining party, you remove your shoes as you enter your chabudai. It is dark, quiet, sensual, and private. You are given a very nice checklist of nigiri to choose among that you can write in, which I love. The service is very fast and good. The taste and quality of the nigiri sushi is very good! My wife isn't a (raw fish) sushi fan so it's good that she has the choice to have a Korean dinner as I eat sushi. She has the bibimbap and the many Korean sides. I can't really think any negatives. I think admittedly the taste and quality of nigiri sushi at Kome is better than Ichiban, but Kome gives me a terrible experience since it's super popular. Kome is very loud, you won't be able to hear your guests plus you might have to wait an hour to get seated at a table (which has an American not Japanese atmosphere). read more
