Found an open parking stall on the street, double checked the parking time sign before turning engine off. Thank you Google Maps! First time going to the kitchen. I say kitchen bc it isn't a restaurant-restaurant. It is a hole in the wall with a table in the doorway and a kitchen. Keep out. No entry. Odd. Ordered my food and waited. One chair outside. The food gave an off-putting odor. Had to open the containers to verify my order before driving away. Yup. My order. The odor came from the shrimp. Again, odd. It's been awhile since we ordered food from here. I believe the last time was the owners before this one & the food was just so good & full. my little brother ordered a lot of food here . Parking: not much street parking but usually the have in the front. Service: The inside looks pretty clean but small.we phone ordered & my brother picked it up before coming home. I noticed all the food seemed a bit over cooked & very...I mean really oily. The portion wasn't as much as other Chinese restaurants we've ordered from. When we started eating the minute chicken with cake noodles, the chicken smelt weird & my kids were saying it was bitter sour. So I made my brother try it & he said the same. He didn't wanna bother going back so he just took off all the chicken & threw it away & ate just the noodles. But the next day my brother & other half had upset stomach. Would we come back? Sadly no. Sometimes you can tell when food is made by someone who knows what they're doing, and someone who just knows the ingredients. Hoy Tin Kitchen falls in the "just knows the ingredients" category. I remember the owners used to be the same as Canton Seafood Restaurant not too long ago. The current owners feel like they are just owning it to own it because the food speaks for itself. This place is located along Liliha St, right before Kuakini St., near Jane's Fountain. Only metered, street parking available. No dine in. Takeout only. $10 minimum for credit cards. Menu is your usual Chop Suey/Cantonese style food. Prices were OK. On par with elsewhere. Food took a while to come out, but it sounds like there's just two people working there. I ordered the Beef and Bittermelon with rice. The portion was a very good amount with plenty of rice. Steaming hot! The main flavors were there: black bean sauce and oyster sauce. But there was something just off about the taste. It lacked salt and sugar (maybe MSG too?) to bring everything together. Overall taste was one note and didn't feel right. The sliced beef was weird. It's large slices that varied in thickness. Some were thin and fell apart, but there were thick pieces that was tough. The meat didn't seem like it was marinated as it was quite bland and not tender. The bittermelon was fine, but the slices were so uneven with different thickness, and different shapes and sizes. Rice was okay. Too much water and had that feeling it wasn't cleaned well enough. Overall, the food was lacking something, missing something, and felt like it was just put together without any thought or focus or care. Everything wasn't prepared very well. This restaurant gets very busy during lunchtime, likely serving many business workers from nearby hospitals and offices within walking distance. They do not offer dine-in service; instead, a table is set up at the entrance to prevent people from entering. Be prepared to wait outside for a while, as customer service can be slow. Today, I ordered the half roast duck for $25.99 and an order of crispy gau gee (8 pieces) for $12.99. Note that sauces are only available upon request, so don't forget to ask for them. Even though I have lived in Liliha for 10+ years now and this place is just around the block for me, I never had the chance to try it. I decided to walk to my doctors appointment and decided to grab lunch on my walk back. I glanced at the menu and they have SO much choices! I decided on the roast duck noodle. I usually go to somewhere else for my roast duck noodle fix, but gave this place a try. It took about 10 minutes for the food to come out and they packaged it really well. I took my food and walked home. I heated it up a little bit more and then put everything into a large bowl. The soup was really clear so I was worried it would be flavorless, but I was wrong. It was flavorful and delicious! There was also so many pieces of roast duck! The roast duck was meaty and savory. There was also a lot of cabbage. You question yelp reviews and life as you stand on the sidewalk watching crackheads talk to themselves. You get your food and you're treated to one of the best roast pork's of your life. I'm sure there are places that have amazing roast pork but I can't currently think of one that even comes close. The jook is quite flavorful and I'll drink that all day. The meat is tender, the Bittermelon firm and not overly or underly cooked, and the black bean sauce is consistently good. So what's up with the rice this last time? It was super mushy where you hardly get individual rice grains, just like a rice mash. Also their portion size has gone down a lot! I was pleasantly surprised after i received my order and hesitant in the beginning because usually when you order takeout the food quality and portioning aren't always great. But I do have to say everything was delicious and hot!!! I hate when i order takeout and my food is cold. I ordered the char sui bbq fried rice and mongolian beef. The fried rice was really declined and they give a pretty hefty portioning. The mongolian beef kind of tasted like beef and peppers with onions i didn't taste much spice like usually mongolian beef is. But nonetheless, it was all pretty tasteful . I do wish they gave a little more mongolian beef for the price but it's okay. I always saw a line out the door when i drive past liliha area and im happy to say i have finally tried this place. This hole in the wall Chinese restaurant on Liliha St. When I say hole in the wall, I mean really hole in the wall as they probably can fit like 3 to 4 tables for 4 people, so no typical big Chinese restaurant party here. In fact due to covid they are only doing take out and oh are they busy as I saw many people coming to grab their order while I was waiting for mine. We tried their roast pork aka lechon. The skin was nice and crispy while the meat was juicy. The better half said she could eat the whole thing. When I heard that, I had to put some on my plate before she did. Their lemon chicken taste was really good. It seemed like the chicken was little meat with the skin. I wished they were more chicken to those pieces. We both agreed their Kung pao chicken was really tasty. Wished they had more chicken then what they gave but then again I always want more meat. There is only street parking so it may be tricky at times to find parking. They have one metered stall right in front and yes I scored that spot. This chinese restaurant has been here on Liliha Street for years. About two to three years ago, new owners took over. I wonder if the cook changed too. The majority of the dishes were on the bland side. Some parts of the crispy chicken were dry, and some parts were not overcooked. The ma po tofu had soft tofu in it and had hardly any meat in it all. It was soupy and only tasted a little spicy. The stuffed eggplant was very good, had a good ratio portion of ground pork and eggplant. Lots of black bean sauce to coat eggplant pieces. The house special crispy noodles were bland. We requested the sauce on the side, but they mixed it in, so by the time we ate it, the crispy was no longer. The chicken with cashew nuts was mostly vegetables. They have a special, get an order of crispy chicken for $7.99, regularly $10.99, when ordering an entree, limit one per order. Their yellow mustard is so watered down. Overall, food is good when you are hungry, but it'll be a while before returning. Depending on what entree you order, portions can be small. Parking is tough. You'll be lucky to find metered street parking. Wait time is about 25 minutes. Take out only. No dine in. I pass by here a lot actually but never ate here. For years we been going a few doors away to Jane's Fountain. So the other day said ah why not, in the area on a Sunday and wasn't sure what to get and what's open. 1st off takeout open and street metered parking only I knew this from passing by all the time lol. Just a few plates for the family to try. Hot n sour soup, yes it's spicy little more hot than other places. Also they put this strands of what reminds me of pickled mustard cabbage. Little different but still ok. Regular plate is basically a lunch plate elsewhere. Sweet sour spare ribs, pot roast pork (red kau yuk), rice and chow mein with a won ton. Everything about standard at more places all had flavor etc. Won ton piece was little on the thinner side with a tiny dime piece meat. Beef bittermelon was pretty good here. I notice options are either item itself or on rice. This one we got was by itself. Lots of beef and bittermelon pretty balanced. Cooked with black bean. Little heavy on the oil/gravy unfortunately so leaked out a bit on the ride home. Added a special I seen on the wall. 5.99 chicken. Was basically an order of crispy chicken. Chicken was good had light flavor, cooked well no pink or red inside which we all hate that red even though fully cooked. Not very crispy on the skin probably took too long to eat. Some edges had little crisp but over couldn't beat it for the price. Overall about a average Chinese restaurant here. To me most places here it's either Upscale, Average, or Sub Standard. A quick pick up of country style stir fried rice noodles and spicy eggplant with ground pork ended up being a lesson in patience. Found parking right in front ofHoy Tin. Tall thin older homeless woman not wearing a mask badgering customers and pedestrians. It got to the point that she was distracting the worker taking our orders. Not a pleasant experience in the middle of the day on Liliha Street. The Chinese cashier is already kind of curt to begin with and the woman was making her more frazzled. First time trying the country style rice noodles here and it sort of reminded me of a meal I had on the street years ago in Guangzhou even down to the stern Chinese worker. Noodles were good, eggplant was good and prices very good. All in all a worthwhile lunch stop patronizing a long time local Chinese hole in the wall. I ordered Jai (vegetarian"Monk's food) and sweet sour cabbage with Squid ( more on the tart side). We really liked the chow funn (chewy noodles with smokey flavor) and the Jai (so healthy and tasty - I could eat this every day)! I'd go back if I saw an empty metered street parking... or I'd park in the space (blocking their car in again in the restaurant's driveway)! Note: takeout only. Time to try a new place! I ordered beef with broccoli (you can get pork instead), crispy gau gee, sweet and sour spareribs, and crispy skin chicken. Mostly hits, but a few slight misses. Crispy gau gee - I wish I had more. They arrived properly contained in a paper lunch bag, with the packaging serving the dual purpose of sopping up grease and for keeping the gau gee from getting soggy through steaming. But the bag wasn't terribly greasy (not like some I've gotten), which suggests the oil was at the proper temperature so the gau gee did not absorb much of it. And they were crispy. Such a satisfying crunch. Generous with the filling, but I wouldn't have minded a little more seasoning. The filling was a tad bland, but it wasn't a deal-breaker for me. The beef with broccoli with heavy on the broccoli, light on the beef. Tasted good, though. Interestingly, there was very little sauce, the least amount of sauce I've ever seen with the countless order of broccoli beef I've gotten from a variety of places over the years. Not a criticism, but merely an observation. The presence of garlic was evident, but I appreciated it wasn't too garlicky so there would be less chance I'd have acid reflux at night. Most it was broccoli with a little beef and a small amount of carrot. The crispy skin chicken sure smelled good in the elevator on the way up. I was trying not to drool. Even though it came in a Styrofoam container, that skin sure was crispy. But - it was way too salty for me, which took away from the dish. It was so salty I had to down about four eight-ounce glasses of water afterwards each time I had a few small pieces. (It's cut into smallish-pieces with a cleaver.) There was also the presence of other spices. I believe it was Chinese five spice, but don't quote me. With the spareribs, I suggest giving them an overnight stay in a fridge, assuming you can hold off that long. This serves two purposes. The first is that, as it is such a fatty dish, a lot of the fat rises to the top and congeals in the cold, making it easier to remove before reheating. There will still be plenty of fat left, but it'll be less than before. The second purpose is to let the flavor mature so it is more full-bodied and hearty after reheating. read more

I can't blame them for the fact that parking is rather tricky because its on Liliha and there are few spaces. I went this past week and ordered Gon Lo Mein. First time having Hoy Tin, and it was via DoorDash (didn't wanna deal with traffic or people.. you get it.) We ordered the Beef gravy chow fun, stuffed eggplant, and cake noodle with crispy gaugee. The eggplant: 10/10. The container was filled with sauce but I opted to just pull out the chunks of eggplant on its own. And it was GOOD. Idk what they stuff it with exactly.. some kind of minced pork cake? Not sure. But it's great! The chow fun was also good! Again, it was very.. gravy. But they pack it with toppings.. big cuts of beef, veggies, and standard chow fun noodles at the bottom. The only thing I wish, was that the noodles were cooked softer. One of the saddest parts of covid for me, is missing out on the 7 course dinners at Chinese restaurants with my family, where my uncle would tell me that it's like a buffet and I could eat as much as I wanted (I obv ate more than my fair share!). Since we don't enjoy that at the restaurants anymore, I was thrilled that my in-laws hosted a small get together and ordered the $110 special as I could try a lot of their dishes: steamed fish, always a favorite, especially with the kids (I just steal their green onions and ginger); other popular dishes were good though not what I normally order, like sweet and sour pork, gon lo mein, crispy chicken, choy sum pork, and special chop suey (I was super curious about this and it was good, and would order again even though I'm not sure if it's on their menu! it's like the yummy mix of meats and veggies that's normally on top of crispy noodles, but this was to go on top of rice). We returned a few weeks later and had their crispy chicken deal (only $6 to add to an entree a large serving of crispy, tasty chicken (slightly salty) and $13 for 12 salt and pepper shrimp (love the heads on these things!). Ordered black bean chow fun and minute chicken noodle cake through door dash (yes they deliver AND participates in door pass...for the chase sapphire reserve holders).
