Har gow ($5.50) what a bargain
Joe P.

We wanted to try a different yum cha place, so me and my LA boyz went to G & G. We were glad we did. At first we weren't sure bc we were the only ones there @ ~ 10:30 on Sun. However, we noticed they do a lot of catering and take out biz. The basics of pork hash, har gow and XLBs were solid. The dumplings were juicy, packed w/ goodies and inexpensive. Not pictured is the manapua, beef chow fun, pai gut and pot stickers. All of the latter were very good also. Lastly, the dan tat had flaky crusts and creamy centers as they should. Regarding the ambiance, its not much to speak of. Most of the items were brought to us, but the dumplings were brought on a traditional cart. The owner and remainder of the staff were very nice. I found a new place to go to for dim sum in HNL Chinatown. I look forward to returning on my next visit home.

Dim sum
Betty Q.

Dim sum was hot and fresh. Service was served in good time. Waitress was attentive and checked on us often. Clean and nice atmosphere. Restaurant takes reservations. Seating is usually not a long wait. Boss lady real nice. Parking on metered streets or park at the Beretania and Smith parking structure.

Chinese restaurant that offers dim sum and a lunch and dinner menu. We came here and tried the hot and sour soup, the minute chicken noodles, and the salted fish and chicken fried rice. Large portions and enough to take home. I think we may have ordered too much. We also tried some dim sum and it was not bad. Good option for family style meals. Street parking. Indoor seating. Casual. Come and create your own experience.

What horrible service only 1 table in restaurant at 8 pm when I come in. party winding down no new food coming out. Takes 50 minutes to make order. I understand that they are busy. But what are they think almost and hour for a order. I argue with customers who said I should wait . Would you? They want to challenge me so stupid. Just like management Old mei sum in same location used to do that for 3 orders of dim sum they still do. Irresponsible MGMT sojai. Look up that meaning.

Chinese broccoli, $20

I ordered takeout from here and spent over $200 for a group. Multiple items were not included in the box and other items, like the Chinese broccoli, cost $20 and came in a container smaller than my hand. Don't waste your time with this place.

Yongchow Fried Rice.

I saw Ginger and Garlic on the "Must Try" listing on Grub Hub. Obviously I had to try it. This review includes a review of Grub Hub as well. Read and you'll understand why. We placed a simple order, (2) Baked Barbecue Pork Buns, (1) Pan Fried Bun stuffed with chicken and (1) order of Yongchow Fried Rice. I'm HIGHLY ALLERGIC to Fish, shellfish and especially shrimp. There was no description of how the Yongchow Fried Rice was prepared, so I added a note in all capital letters advising the restaurant of my allergies. "NO FISH NO SHELLFISH AND ESPECIALLY NO SHRIMP, I AM HIGHLY ALLERGIC". I've eaten at several Chinese restaurants and my allergies have always been addressed perfectly and any necessary precautions made. This was on a Tuesday night. After waiting 90 minutes checking the Grub Hub Tracking , it never changed from saying "Delivery Driver on his way to pick up your order" After another 30 minutes I finally complained to Grub Hub who cancelled my order and said I'll be refunded in 3-7 days. UNACCEPTABLE. It was now 8:00pm and Ginger and Garlic was closed for the night. Wednesday. I decided to be fair, not blaming the restaurant for the Tuesday debacle and placing another order at 5:00pm for the exact same order as what I had ordered on Tuesday night. I scheduled delivery for anytime between 7:45pm and 8:00pm. At 7:45pm, The Grub Hub driver texted me saying he was waiting at the restaurant and they hadn't even started my order. Shout out to the delivery driver for the order updates. At 8:05pm Delivery Driver texted me that they just started the order. At 8:40pm he texted me that my order was finally ready and that he was on his way, he arrived more than an hour late, just like Tuesday with the correction that this time I received my food. I originally blamed Tuesday night's debacle on Grub Hub but it appears to have been due to Ginger and Garlic not preparing the food in a timely manner and they closed without preparing my order at all instead they left the ticket open and closed the restaurant. This according to Grub Hub Management. Sorry if this is long, but it'll make you appreciate how long 90 minutes feels. I'm starving at this point, ready to eat and ready to review. The "Baked" Barbecue Pork Buns were steamed, not baked. The Yongchow fried rice was Char Siu, beef and SHRIMP. Lots of small cocktail shrimp. I was not very happy. I double checked the order and my allergy note was boldly included in capital letters. The only redeeming item were the Pan Fried Buns stuffed with chicken. Unfortunately (1) order wasn't enough to split for 3 people. My daughter originally tried to pick out all the shrimp but told me not to eat it because they used Oyster Sauce. No Yongchow Fried Rice for me, unless they were trying to kill me. After reading thireview they just might. (Sarcasm). I ate 1/2 a Steamed Barbecue Pork Bun as my dinner. I will most definitely not be ordering from Garlic and Ginger again. I told Grub Hub to take it off of the "Must Try" menu. Grub Hub issued a $25 credit for my troubles. I really wanted to like this place after reading posts and reviews. Sadly, it was not to be.

Steamed beef ball
Kevin J.

I didn't get to try a lot of dishes so I may have to add an update on this in the future. There were some items on the menu that I really liked and others that I felt were not worth while. The BQQ pork bun comes in two forms (or at least I think that is the case) one with a normal bakery bread exterior and the other that comes with this nice crumbly crust. i had the latter. That was absolutely my favorite dish here. Its a nice spin on a classic dish. The texture of the crust is unique and I appreciate that a lot. The beef ball was ok... maybe felt small but ok for price. Shiao Long Bao was a nice size but lacked the soup element. The Look Fun felt overpriced for what it was. Mochi Rice in Lotus Leaf was delicious with the salted egg inside! Overall not bad. I would try again.

Steisha B.

FRESH food, carts come around too, if you couldn't decide what you wanted, they'll show you. Service is really fast and they come around often, price is very very reasonable, Tons of seating and tables for larger parties . Restrooms are available. Come before or after 12pm... the lunch crowd is no joke!

Chive and shrimp dim sum.

These two are my favorite! Every time I go to Oahu, I have to stop here in Chinatown. Got to bring my daughter here for the first time and she loves it too! Their shrimp and chive dim sum is the best!

Sean Y.

Ordered take away from here and even with the wait, the food was amazing! The har gao had the right amount of shrimp to wrapper ratio and the flavor was fantastic! The siu mai was perfect! Nice and moist with the right amount of seasoning. Overall everything we ordered was awesome! Very worth it! If you're thinking of going here or ordering from here, don't hesitate!

Shanghai Xiao Long Bao

Parking: we found street parking right outside the shop. It was late around 230pm in a Saturday so it wasn't busy at all. There is other parking in the area right across and perpendicular to the restaurant entry on Beretania Street side to the underground parking lot. I am familiarized by the area because Char Sun Hut use to be across the street.:( Service: As we walked in, we were instantly seated and was offered hot tea. The waitress also came by instantly with a tray to see what items we wanted. But because I wanted hot dim sum we put in an order from their dim dim list. We didn't wait long but after , 5-10 minutes after ordering we got our dishes. It was fresh! Prices: I ordered from the smaller portion 4.95 and couple from the large 5.95. For a party of 5, we did a good amount of $85 excluding tax and tip. It was great prices for the same amount given from other dim sum establishments. Dishes was reasonable for its price! Overall: We were FULL and satisfied with the dishes ordered. Kids loved it!

Do you have soup dumplings ? If so can anyone give a honest review?

Online order is way more expensive than calling in or dining in. Am I mistaken?

No, you're correct. I'm pretty sure the food delivery services add a couple bucks to each item unfortunately.

Do they use MSG in their dim sum?

Is this place wheelchair accessible?

Yes. Very easy access, and accommodating.

Where can you park?

To my knowledge, there's a paid public parking lot across the street as well as street parking within a 2-3 minute walking distance. Just be careful as night since there are a lot of homeless people in the area.

BYOB or do they serve alcohol?

Do they serve dimsum all day or just during the typical dimsum time?

FWIW - I agree with Andy in that one can get some of the simple dim sum (i.e. pre-made and ready to simply steam) dishes like har gow and sui mai outside of the lunch hours - we were able to do so. However, the chef is different for each cuisine… Read more

The restaurant wasn't small, but there were just a lot of people. We waited about 20 minutes for a table. What's great about this place is that they have these paper menus. You can check off what you want while you're waiting. As soon as you get seated, you can just hand over the menu to the server and it makes the process a lot faster. It didn't take that long for us to get our food. We ordered a lot of items. We got the shrimp dumplings, black bean spareribs, beef look fun, Shanghai pork dumplings, steamed salted egg custard buns, pan fried turnip cake, seafood bean curd roll, sesame balls with red bean, taro puffs and chicken dumplings. Everything was on point except the sesame balls with red bean. They were small and the breading was thick. Pass on those. My two favorites were the black bean spareribs and the salted egg custard buns. I love salted duck eggs. The prices here are a bit more than the average dim sum spot. Most of the steamed baskets were $7-$8. If you use your American Savings Bank debit card you get a discount: $7 off $50, $15 off $100 or $75 off $500. Free parking in the basement of the building.

Better late than never, but come too late and missed out on the good stuff?…read more Honolulu Seafood Restaurant is a sister restaurant to Kapiolani Seafood Restaurant. Located in Downtown in the same space where Yong Sing, Mandalay, and the short-lived Bourbon Street used to be. Inside feels and looks essentially the same as the prior restaurants. Huge, open, two levels. Would you believe there was once a time where the second floor was an option to sit because it was just that busy? Hours is basically 10am everyday till 3pm, then 5-930pm. Seems like the hours are geared towards Downtown workers. Where to park? 8am-5pm, Monday-Friday, park in the Ali'i Place Parking garage. Entrance is right past the restaurant. Only 75 cents per half hour and restaurant validates one dollar. After 5pm on weekdays, and 8-1am on weekends, park at Bishop Square Parking. Entrance is across from the restaurant, entrance from the left lane of Alakea. Cost is $1.50 with validation. The regular menu is exactly the same as Kapiolani Seafood Restaurant. However, the dim sum is not the case. It's much, much less. There's only 16 total, and 7 more on weekends only. It's essentially the bare basics (but no beef ball!). All the dim sum looks exactly the same as Kapiolani Seafood Restaurant, but everything was on the bland side and just felt like it was missing something. Steamed Spareribs was one note and meat was not as tender. Beef Look Funn was good. The look funn had perfect thinness and texture. If have this dish, how come cannot have steamed beef balls? Chicken Feet was good. Soft, tasty, and meaty. But just ate and felt one note. Pan Fried Shrimp and Chives Dumplings was pretty good. Pan fried very well. Generous amount of filling. Just on the bland side. Chicken Sticky Rice in Lotus Leaf was pretty good! Soft, moist mochi rice with a good amount of tasty filling. The Bean Curd Roll with Pork was probably the most flavorful dim sum of the meal. Jam-packed with tasty and flavorful filling. Overall, the dim sum was decent and almost similar to Kapiolani Seafood, but it was a touch on the bland side and a slight step below. Service was good. Friendly and attentive. Food came out pretty quick. Inside was cool, spacious, and comfortable. I want to come back on my lunch break! I don't mind dim sum'ing solo! Hopefully there'll be more dim sum choices. I remember seeing on social media they had some unique items only at this location. But I guess I'm too late! **I heard some news, maybe rumors, but the Kapiolani Seafood location might be forced to move due to that and the next lot being torn down for..... you guessed it, more condos! Everything was delicious, but my favorite was the deep fried eggplant with shrimp. As an eggplant lover, I appreciated how well it was prepared, and the shrimp were large and juicy. Each dish was fresh and flavorful. I do wish there was a slightly larger menu selection. I was hoping to order egg custard tarts for dessert, but they didn't have it. Fortunately, the lava custard sesame balls were yummy! Service was efficient, and the restaurant itself was spacious and clean. While Tim Ho Wan is a bit pricier than some other dim sum spots, it's kinda expected given its well-known name and for being in Waikiki. This was perfect timing for us. However once seated, we had to ask for water 4 times, sauces twice, and waited a 10-15 minutes for someone to stop by and take our order. When someone did come to get our order they told us it was the only time we could order dim sum. This struck us as odd. We had mentioned that the hose explained it would be 1-1/2 hours until last call. They mumbled something at us out of what we felt was annoyance then stuck to this order being our last call for dim sum. We proceeded to order our entire meal quickly since we often eat at Chinese restaurants and generally know what we felt like eating for us and our kids. Around 3:30 (10 min or so after we ordered ) the server came back and told us they are out of 1/3 of what we ordered which included picking duck and look fun. Again very odd on a Sunday afternoon. So we kept what they did have available and continued to wait. At this point still waiting for our waters. As the sitting went on we observed a table who sat after us get their waters food and everything they asked for quickly. We waited almost 20 minutes for water and rice that we had to ask for multiple times. The rice still wasn't brought out until almost 30 minutes in, which was after 3 items from our order was brought out at very slow rates compared to other tables who we overheard ordering. We also needed to cancel our crispy noodles that we ordered for the kids as it was going on 45min and the last thing left on our order although it was the first item on our receipt and the first item requested. Overall the flavor of the food was good and the only reason I gave stars, however my family and I felt borderline discriminated against and service was very bad. I do not recommend this place for anything other than takeout.

With the extensive menu offerings, there are some items that outshine others, which are to be expected. We ordered the following: * Siu mai. Enjoyed the large siu mai, which the dense pork was mixed with mushrooms and water chestnuts (no shrimp). It was tasty and flavorful. * Jin dui. Loved the large thin-crusted coconut/peanut jin dui, just how my mom used to make them! Most restaurants don't "roll" them enough to get that thin crust, but here, they make it right! * Sticky rice in lotus leaf. Chunks of lup cheong and whole salted egg yolks with mochi rice make this a winner! * Char siu look fun. This is one of my favorite dishes; however, it was not prepared well. Generous chunks of hardened and seemingly old char siu filled the look fun, making it difficult to eat and with a lack of tender flavored char siu. Loved that the sweet sauce is served separately in a squeeze bottle so that you can use as much as you want. * Dong Po Pork. This Hangzhou dish is pork belly braised in soy sauce, Shaoxiang wine, and rock sugar until it's tender and melts in your mouth. The pork bell is tied with a string to hold its shape, and staff will use a scissors to remove it. This dish is savory, sweet and has a rich caramelization; served with broccoli to balance the richness of the sauce. Eaten with rice, I really enjoyed this dish! Well plated and executed! Portions are generous, but price point may be contentious, as some dishes appear to be over-priced, like the char siu look fun. We arrived mid-morning on a weekday, and it was not very crowded. Staff was very friendly, attentive, and bilingual, which made communication easy. Service was quick and efficient. No moving carts, as you're given a sheet of listed dim sum to check off the ones you want to order. The large interior is spacious and clean. Its banquet hall can hold a max of 30+ tables for a private party. There are also smaller private rooms. Extensive renovations were made after the previous restaurant closed. Hours of operation are Thurs to Tues 8a to 9p and Wed 8a to 3p. Regular entrees are not prepared until 10a when the cooks arrive for work. Private parking available in back of the restaurant, municipal parking lots are nearby, and metered street parking are available. Extensive delicious menu offerings, generous portions, and efficient and friendly customer service will likely result in return visits to try other items on the menu. We wish the Liangs continued success with their restaurant! Support local!

Been hearing chatter about this place that has been opened for couple years already. Parking always…read moredeterred us because street parking in Chinatown is tough. We happened to get a good parking spot so heck, why not go check it out. I read a Yelper's review later that it has parking in the back. Ok, now we know! It's located on King St. near the red dragon pillars. Dining area is pretty big- lots of tables. There are no roving dimsum carts- you order on a sheet the item you want and quantity. What surprised me right off were the prices. I know things are rough for businesses and price hikes are necessary for the bottom line but $5.95/ $7.35 for dim sum? If you want steamed look fun, it'll cost you $10-11. Yikes! Our usual dim sum place is about $1-3 less. But to be fair, the size of the dimsum is huge. The chicken feet we had was sooo plump and the other dim sum looked like overstuffed balls. So okay, maybe the price is fair? Each plate came with 3. The food was tasty too except the chao zhou dumplings with peanut was salty for our taste. Service was okay-the place was hopping so the servers are too busy to check on your tea, order more food, etc. Go up and pay your bill.

Amazing Chinese noodles restaurant in Chinatown known for their beef noodles!…read more We had the beef mein, beef chow fun, and side order of look fun. Everything was great but the beef in the soup was the highlight, it was soft but not too soft and full of flavor. It paired perfectly with the noodles and soup. We went on a Sunday for lunch and they were pretty busy but we only had to wait maybe 10 - 15 min. Service was very speedy. Cute Chinatown shop vibes.

Located in Chinatown, Lam's Kitchen is on a corner on Maunakea Street. The building is brick and…read morethe restaurant has red doors, which we read had been newly renovated. Inside, the space feels busy with tables and people moving around. There are benches inside for those waiting for a table. We had to wait a bit before we were seated but they seemed efficient in ushering people in and out of the restaurant. The middle had smaller tables, which seemed most suitable for two people. The sides had larger tables for larger parties. The tables felt pretty close together but we enjoyed the stool/bench chairs we sat on. They were different than what we are used to in restaurants. Our order was taken quickly. We decided to get the beef chow fun, yang chow fried rice, and cheong fun. The cheong fun was good, especially after adding hoisin sauce. The texture was soft and the portion was quite decent. The chow fun was also yummy. It was tasty without being overbearing. The fried rice was our favorite. It was flavorful and included a variety of ingredients. The prices were not bad either, considering the portion sizes. We hope to be back one day to try more of what they have!
