Went there for dinner and they had a Mother's Day's special for 4 people included white rice, beef broccoli with cake noodles, steamed fish, sweet sour cabbage with beef, cold Ginger chicken, shrimp with walnut, crab & scallop soup and crispy Gau gee. $108.00 for 4 person, so we ordered 2 orders with 9 of us. There was a little left over some cold ginger chicken and some noodles and very little sweet sour cabbage with beef. The crab & scallop soup was very good and tasty and it came out nice and hot. The beef broccoli and cake noodles were okay not much flavor and the noodles were crispy on the outside but thick and chew in the middle. The sweet sour cabbage with beef was okay . The walnut shrimp was very good the shrimp was good size and the sauce didn't dominate the flavor of the light crispy shrimp batter. The steam fish didn't have the flavor of the ginger garlic with soy sauce it lacked the flavor, it was more like steamed fish very bland. The Gau gee came out hot and crispy which was good with the chili & shoyu sauce. They are now under new ownership and the cooks are separate from the front. Duk Kee is one of the few remaining chop suey restaurants remaining on Oahu. A lot of old-timey Chinese restaurants are closing because the owners are retiring and their children do not want to take over the business. My Millennial and Gen Z kids think that Chinese food is Din Tai Fung or Panda Kitchen, but I remember when we would wipe the chopsticks, bowls and teacups clean as soon as we were seated. And the attitude the waitresses would give you! They made the soup nazi look like a novice! Anyways, I digress and miss the good ol' days. Duk Kee changed owners about a year ago. After a rocky start, their food is pretty awesome. They have a monthly special of $109. It's a 9 course meal and all the dishes are tasty and substantial. Duk Kee is a convenient local Chinese restaurant that's not good but not bad. After ownership changed a little bit ago, the taste of the food and price did change too unfortunately. However, they are still convenient and fairly fast (previously was 10 minutes but now food takes 20 minutes). The "new" (versus previous ownership) workers still dont smile, which i find odd since they are younger, but at least they dont talk stink about customers and are very hard workers! The best value is their monthly set menu deal. We just tried their January 2026 deal. Great menu for $108 (i think monthly menu was $88 and $98 just last year). We also added a sweet sour fish $18.95. We also tried their Sunday lunch specials: chinese chicken salad $12.50 and sam see mein $14.50 (was $13.50 exactly 1 year ago). Unfortunately the sam see mein only had about half the quantity of toppings that other places give. I paid $1 more to change the noodles to the rice noodles that other places normally also make it with. But this one was long, thick, and chewy. It just wasnt good. On the other hand, the $108 set monthly menu included: rice, scallop soup (very salty), honey walnut shrimp (really big shrimp), lotus root with black fungus veges (no taste but I love these veges so I just added chili sauce), salt and pepper pork chop (tasty and good size pieces), cold ginger chicken (not sure why, but had lots of tiny pieces of bone shards), beef broccoli cake noodles (very small portion of cake noodles--supposedly feeds 5, but that means each person gets like 2 cake noods), and jin dui (yummy). I actually really liked this place. The flavors were delicious. We ordered minute chicken cake noodle and mabo tofu to go. However there was not much chicken/other ingredients in the cake noodle compared to a lot of other restaurants. For these two items, the total was around $34 without tip. Very solid American/chop suey style Chinese food that I think is way better than the average reviews imply. The value is excellent and you can get a variety of dishes that all have distinct flavors. I went in here by accident...as another eatery was not offering takeout. A longtime establishment in Kaimuki...I can only recall eating from ( iInhad takeout ) here on one other occasion. Duk Kee is the name so I requested the stuffed duk...jk...duck. It was a bowl of roast duck...stew. It was damn fine and reminded me of the old McCully Chop Suey House on the corner of South King and McCully streets. My parents - Japanese - would often order that old restaurants stuffed duck on special occasions ; and the taste was very similar. I always thought it was Hong Kong style cuisine which is similar to Cantonese which Duk Lee is, so there ya go. Appearance wasn't the best but at $18...can't go wrong. This is my 2nd trip to Kaimuki with a friend, so surely I didn't know what to expect when going to a place over there. I remembered seeing Duk Kee the last time I visited Kaimuki, but didn't consider eating there at the time. That time, I considered it. Coming into this, I didn't know what to expect, all things considered. However, after today, maybe it isn't so bad. The plate lunch special that I ordered...definitely a lot of food for what you get in terms of the price. I liked what I mostly ate, but the spareribs, not so much. I don't know why, but for some reason, it wasn't that good. The pot roast pork and beef broccoli noodles were actually my favorite thing about that lunch plate. Gau Gee...not bad. All-in-all, it was okay for a first-time visit. Overall, this gets a 8.5 out of 10 from me. Three and a half stars. Heard ownership changed. New owners seem young and new chef. The menu is probably about the same with a few changes but you'll get your go to Chinese take out for the weeknight you don't feel like cooking. The "common" Cantonese dishes are mostly done well. One of the best things is the jai at the beginning of every month -- 5 stars. We had a family dinner last night at Duk Kee. My cousin ordered 9 dishes for just 8 of us. The food was so delicious, we hardly had any leftovers. Service was excellent, they changed plates and kept water and tea filled. We preordered the dishes and reserved a table. The restaurant was very busy on a Sunday evening. Duk Kee is excellent and I highly recommend dining here. I took photos of some of our dishes. I walked in and ordered. It was not crowded. They made me wait 20 minute for the special of the day. Roast chicken on noodle no msg. My friend on the only table with people eating said - what a long wait. Yep 20 min. Two other people with one item each picked up their order while I was waiting. Another order with around 5 won ton mien and 3 or 4 other dishes was being made while I waited. When I asked about my border they looked surprised. I even paid cash to avoid the 3% credit card charge. So I am not impressed with the newer owners. I was not treated as poorly with the old owners and the food was salty and the noodles so soggy with gravy spilling out of the container. 2024 update Duk Kee came under new ownership during the first quarter of 2024. With new ownership came new cooks and the way dishes were prepared. Our initial purchases were disappointing, flavoring or lack thereof was a shock. We decided to wait and give them a chance to work it out. Many times because new cooks will approach things differently, old time customers from the previous regime expect the taste to be the same,, sometimes this is not the case. Does it mean it's bad? Not necessarily, it depends. Recently we had a chance to try their crispy gau gee with ss sauce on the side. This appetizer was prepared nicely and we enjoyed it. We will probably slowly poke around and try other dishes to see if our initial experiences have changed or probe to find dishes better suited for us. My 'go to favorite' chinese restaurant was closed so I decided to give Duk Kee a try..... WRONG!!!!! The minute chicken cake noodle was not FRESH MADE, you could tell it was warmed up! The cake noodle was kinda burnt and not crispy, a sign that it was warmed up. The chicken was tasteless and dry. I threw my food away! The sauteed eggplant was terrible and so was the pepper chicken. Located in the heart of kaimuki town right next to Via Gelato. Great place for quick and affordable Chinese. My go to is their dinner plate, has a great variety and definitely big enough to share. We usually split a dinner plate and something else off the menu. This time we went I got their honey walnut shrimp and pork sour cabbage. Both yummy and fresh tasting. The menu has so many options and so sometimes it's hard to decide what to order. My favorite dishes include the crispy gau gee (deep-fried wontons), cold ginger chicken, and honey walnut shrimp. The portions are generous, and the prices are reasonable so I'll often order extra to take for lunch! Parking can be a bit challenging and also be careful even if you're stopping in just to grab your takeout. Duk Kee is Old School Cantonese food with the taste of Old Hawaii when Kapiolani Coffee Shop was located at Aloha Motors and Tops Restaurant. The menu is traditional Cantonese with a smattering of Szechuan. Additionally, what sets Duk Kee apart from others is their cook who taste and presentation reminds me of the now closed Chan's Gourmet Chinese Restaurant. During Thanksgiving, Duk Kee offered two (2) items that are simply delicious and innovative; Cold Soft Won Ton in Cold Ginger Chicken Sauce and Salt-n-Pepper Shishamo (Capelin). Yes, Shishamo is Japanese for the Willow Leaf Smelt, but Duk Kee doesn't serve it deep fried in panko and charge $6 for three (3) fish, either. What you get is two (2) handfuls of beer battered smelts served with salt, pepper, garlic, green onions and jalapenos. Yum! So, the next time that you're in Kaimuki, stop by Duk Kee Chinese Restaurant for a taste of how Chinese food was served to your parents and grandparents. Oh Duck Kee. How I've ignored you for 25+ years. What was I thinking?? Well, it was the menu. It looked too Chop Suey'ish and basic. But there's a secret menu with a little bit more authentic dishes! When I read the news about the owners of Duck Kee retiring, and the new owners is from Golden Eagle, I was even less interested because I'm not a fan of their food. How did I end up at Duck Kee? I'm even a lesser fan of Happy Day! Duck Kee has been in Kaimuki--along 12th Avenue near Waialae Avenue for over 45 years! That's amazing! We need to keep these establishments. There's only metered parking and the municipal lot. The inside is spacious with a decent amount of tables. The metal chairs and booths with the red fabric padding instantly brings the vintage Chinese restaurant vibes. The menu is the usual American Chinese fare with your Orange Chicken, Crispy Gau Gee, and etc. Luckily I did stare at the menu for a long time as I wouldn't have received Duk Kee's special menu! We started with the Egg White and Dried Scallop Fried Rice. This was okay. It never felt like I was eating fried rice as the rice was still clumpy, bland, and bright white, and there was zero wok heat. The egg whites were also mostly clumped together. The green onions were scant. But at least the dried scallop was hydrated and not the deep fried, just sprinkled on top of the fried rice variety. Ong Choi with Preserved Bean Curd Sauce was decent. I needed more taste and flavor. The preserved bean curd taste did not come through, and the ong choi was on the "old" side. Lastly we ordered the House Special Ribs. My grandma wanted to sub the regular broccoli for Chinese broccoli, and to my surprise, they were able to do that! I didn't even see Chinese broccoli anywhere on the menu. Good to know! The pork ribs were super tender--literally fall off the bone. The meat was quite tasty and flavorful with a nice balance between savory and sweet. The Chinese broccoli was cooked very well too. Overall, the meal was all right. The ribs were excellent, and the prior dishes needed some work, but still decent. The service was excellent. Everyone was so friendly, polite, accommodating, patient, and courteous. I swear I've seen the staff at some other Chinese restaurant, but I just can't remember. I was glad to meet a server who was kept on and said she worked there for 25 years. The prices are on-par with other places, and their portions are quite generous. I'll say it's better than the place an avenue away, and I'll definitely come back to try more. read more

There were seven of us. We wanted to try the new ownership of this restaurant. The place was very busy today. This is expected on the Chinese holiday. The tables appeared clean. Seating was tight. After we placed our order in, service of the dishes were quick. Water and tea refills were constant and removal of used dishes were quick. Service is 5 out of 5 here. The food was as follows: Jai- 4 out of 5. A bit on the sweet side. Oysters are a nice touch. Peking duck with buns-3 out of 5. Not your typical Peking duck. It was on the dry side. The buns were great 5 out of 5. Restaurant also provided us extra hoisin sauce (upon request) for the duck. Black bean beef with chow fun- 3 out of 5. Not much taste to this dish. Beef had an unusual texture. Pounded beef maybe? Winter melon soup-4.5 out of 5. This soup was just right in my humble opinion. The mix of ingredients were flavorful. I enjoyed this dish the most. Kau yuk with taro-4.5 out of 5. Very large serving size. Thick cuts of kau yuk (braised pork) and taro. My dad really enjoyed this dish. Fish filets with sweet and sour sauce and sin choy. 3.5 out of 5 stars. The fish was a bit on the chewy side. The sauce is tasty with the sin choy. Egg fu yong was nondescript. 2 out of 5. It was not fluffy but flat and closer to fried eggs texture. This was my least favorite dish. Rice was fresh and fluffy 5 out of 5. Tea was extremely bland and without taste. 1 out of 5. I'll stick with the water. I met the manager Gavin who thanked us for our patronage. He had a nice personality and he was multitasking ( phone orders, table orders, getting take out ready, and ringing up the charges!). There is one gender free bathroom. It could be cleaner. 3 out of 5. You'll need to go behind the cashier to reach the bathroom. Space here is very limited. Keep trying to go back to see if they are getting better. I bought this dinner plate for $15.00 and is super small. I know these are different owners. I only order cause I thought I was going to get a plate with a mountain of food, but for $15 I was so disappointed. As for the food, it was mediocre. It's not that great. A lot of fat on the red meat not enough meat on the sweet-and-sour pork. As you can see in the picture uploaded, it's really small portion than what it was before. My Uncle, My Mom, and I all ordered the Dinner plate. When I saw that their Dinner plate had three Krispy gau gee I was excited. No wonder my Uncle wanted to come here because he sure loves Krispy gau gee too. Everyone enjoyed their dinner and the food here is very tasty and good.
