Fried Soft Fried Soft-Shell Crab Basket

Excellent TBC Margarita! We had a 20 minute wait but it was well-worth it. (Sunday at 4:30 it really cleared out. Not sure if that's always the case but we'll try that time next time we go. And there will be a next time!) Nice to have the text system to let you know when you're table's ready but (they only give you 5 minutes to claim your table so don't get too involved doing something else!) We thought the combo would be too much food for just the two of us. My husband also wanted to try some things you can't find anywhere else. So we ordered a basket of the Fried Soft Shell crabs. It comes with cocktail sauce but they'll give you tartar sauce if you prefer. It comes with your choice of Cajun or Lemon Pepper Fries. We got the Lemon Pepper. We also ordered the Lobster Roll - non-spicy. Our server was very honest about the size of the roll - two King Sweetbread rolls. This also comes with fries so we tried the Cajun fries with the lobster roll. Hardly any wait time. Everything tasted wonderful. Little hidden spice in the soft shell crab batter but not too much. My husband also ordered Gumbo (no rice). Delicious! Five shrimp (yes, we counted them) and tasty Andoui sausage. Okra (not too slimy) on the top. Service was excellent. No pushing. Very patient with the questions and explanations. They put a star on your table to designate first time visitors so you know they want to male your first visit the best. Everyone kept checking back with and manager stopped by too. Parking validation took $4.00 ofd our parking. Not bad. Leigh and Brandon and one more female server (I'm sorry I didn't write down your name!) are the best!

Was craving seafood boil and decided to come here. I was disappointed they didn't have king crab legs that day as I wanted to get that but settled for the snow crab combo. Came with a lot of food and I liked how it came with shrimp and mussels too. We also got Cajun fries and chicken wings too. Both delicious. A messy meal but certainly worth it.

Definitely not bias because I have tried multiple spots on Oahu that offers seafood boil; but till this day, Boiling Crab has been my number one favorite. If you're gonna sell seafood boil at a restaurant you gotta make sure you know how to season the food. I feel like that's a given but I've tried other places and they don't bring the heat unlike this place. Seafood is tasty which I appreciate because believe it or not I've had some bad crab legs and I don't know how a restaurant can serve bad crab legs if the whole reason for people to eat at your restaurant is to eat good seafood. I digress. Service is good as usual, the staff is friendly and always assures you if anything else is needed. Even the manager/chef (I assume) will personally come to your table to greet you which is refreshing. The restaurant itself is clean and continues to keep brining me back. Only reason why I would rate 4 stars is because you pay a lot for the combo. I personally would like more seafood if I'm paying that much. Not a big deal breaker but that's just me and honestly Boiling Crab is overall a good place to eat.

Great service from our server George. He answered all our questions and recommended accordingly. Look at other servers, The Boiling Crab is well managed to standards. It is 7 pm and no wait with available tables. I think this establishment is worth a try. I and hope they do well in the Salt community. We are new part time residents in this neighborhood and will definitely be back. Oh, and the food is tasty!

Had cravings for crab and shrimp, so we decided to come here with a group. We enjoyed it tremendously. The staff were very friendly, and the spice level was just right -- flavorful with enough kick to keep you wanting more. Great service, great food, and a great ambiance overall.

I was so happy to know there was a boiling crab in Honolulu and knew we had to go!! We came around 6 pm on a Saturday and was expecting it to be jammed packed like the one in Vegas but luckily there was no wait and we were seated right away! We got half a dozen oysters to start and they were huge and fresh! We also shared a basket of fried catfish and they were delicious! We got the crab leg combo medium spice in the everything sauce (I got a side in the extra hot) and loved the flavor! Only reason I'm giving it a 4/5 star is because of the service. The anticipating for things was just lacking. It wasn't busy and everyone just kinda hung out behind the bar. No spoons for the rice so we had to wait and find someone to get us spoons. Crab legs were dropped off and again had to wait forever to find someone for the crab leg cracker and pick. Just kind of killed the experience having to ask for everything and waiting. There's a sign to use your hands but it's kinda hard to crack the hard shells with just your hands and with the sauce on the rice you do kinda need a spoon. Otherwise everyone was nice and food was as good as I remembered.

Located at SALT Kakaako. Near Highway Inn next to VEIN. Party of 7. We came for the family trough of seafood to fill out bellies. We ordered: Crawfish and snow crab combos Gumbo Service was great. Kitchen was a bit slow but it was fine. Prices had gone up, but expected. Still a good place to take the family for some Cajun seafood grinds.

I had a fun meal here with my 2-year-old! she loved getting hands-on with the food, and I appreciated the gloves and bibs they provide to help with the mess. Just be warned: it's a VERRRRY messy experience. I left feeling totally overstimulated by the end. Service was friendly: our waitress was great, but I wish she had explained the menu options a bit more clearly. The menu is also super limited. Yes, it's a seafood boil spot, but there were zero vegetables or fresh sides. The meal really needed something like a salad to balance it out. Food-wise, the crab was definitely the highlight -- sweet and flavorful. But the corn and potatoes tasted like they'd been sitting at the bottom of a pot all day: overcooked and mushy. The absolutely must order is their Cajun fries with crab on top (I forget the name of it)... that was the best part of our whole meal-- BEST fries I've had in a while. For 5 adults and one toddler, our total was close to $300. We had a good amount of leftovers, but for the price, I expected more in terms of freshness and variety. One thing to note: the parking system at SALT is a hassle. Unless you've already set up your credit card with the app ahead of time, it's not very user-friendly -- especially for older people like my parents. It's all digital, and you must remember to scan the validation QR code from the restaurant, or you'll be charged the full rate. For how much we spent on the meal, it's disappointing that parking wasn't fully covered. At that price point, it should be. The handwashing station was very necessary after a meal like this. 3 stars for quality of food, variety & parking situation.

Oyster Platter with their house sauce! YUMMY!
    Laurissa A.

This is my go-to spot for seafood drippin' in saucy goodness! Reasonable prices, friendly servers, and finger licking good food. I always order the snow crab combo with the whole sha-bang sauce on the side and extra lemons. The local girl in me gotta have rice to soak up all the sauce. ONO! On this particular visit I tried the oyster platters for the first time and was pleasantly surprised with the quality and the house made sauce served with it! DOUBLE ONO! This is def part of the regular order moving forward. Pro Tip: * Visit between 3-5pm, no crowds. * They offer parking validation. * Bring a foodie friend. * Skip the gloves, nobody wanna lick sauce off of plastic!

Best seafood boil I've tried on the island!! We ordered the crawfish combo ($56), and the sha bang bang shrimp ($16). The crawfish combo came with 1/2 lb shrimp, 1/2 lb clams, 1/2 lb mussels, corn, potatoes, sausage, and rice. (A great value compared to getting Ala carte). If you're wondering if you can handle a higher spice level the answer is probably no. We ordered the mild and it definitely had some heat! Thank you to the yelpers who suggested we not go for a higher level haha My favorite was the sha bang bang shrimp, definitely will order this again. The shrimp that came in the combo was pretty big & so good!! The sauce was also amazing & very garlicky. I honestly didn't love the crawfish too much but that could just be me. Probably would recommend ordering just shrimp, clams, and mussels Ala carte if you're the same way. Service was great! Everyone was so energetic & on their grinddd. I don't know how they have the patience for all the mess everyone makes here LOL. I loved that they have a hand washing area, bibs, and a paper towel covering the tables too!

It's always such a treat to come to Boiling Crab what a fun (and tasty!) experience! We (4 of us) ordered the Dungeness Crab combo with garlic sauce mild seasoning, Cajun fries, kids' chicken tenders, and extra boiled egg... everything hit the spot. The crab was perfectly cooked& juicy, sweet, and coated in their signature buttery garlic sauce. Even with the mild spice level, it had plenty of flavor. It's always messy in the best way!! The Cajun fries were crispy and packed with flavor, and the kids' chicken tenders were crispy outside, tender inside, and perfect balance to the seafood. The vibe here is casual and fun, and the staff was friendly and helpful! Definitely wear the bib, embrace the mess, and enjoy. Will be back soon

The Boiling Crab Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - The Boiling Crab

Are you going to be open on thanksgiving?

Sorry no - We are only closed two days a year. Thanksgiving day and Christmas Day. Please come visit us on another day!!

Can i switch out some items in the combo? like for example i dont really like the mussels or the clam, could i switch it out even if i have to pay extra? i like the combo because of the corn, potatoes, etc

Sorry for the delay, we did not get a notice for this question from Yelp. We do not usually make substitutions with the combos. If there is something you would like to switch up, please speak with a manager so we can help you get exactly what you…

Me and my friends are going there tonight.., if we order the seafood boil combo, does it comes with crawfish?

No, it does not. All combos come with a 1/2 lb. of shrimp, but the Crawfish combo is its own combo.

Do you sell micheladas at this location?

    Yes we do!

Is there any way to get the shrimp with the head off peeled and deveined?

Aloha - we will do just about anything to accommodate our guests needs, but occasionally we have to turn down requests that will affect other guests in the restaurant. Unfortunately this is one of them. It can really slow down the kitchen and…

We are planning to come in next week with a party of 10. All of us are vaccinated except my 12 year old niece. Does she need to get a Covid test?

Please have your niece do one of those home COVID tests and we will accept that. You might want to use Yelp Wait List if you can. Depending on the time and the day, it will help minimize your wait. Thanks!

Do you have seating for a group of 10? Was wanting to come here to eat dinner Saturday evening for a going-away get together.

We definitely have space to seat a group of 10. We don’t take reservations, and encourage our guests to use Yelp Waitlist. Since Yelp Waitlist allows you to add your party only within a certain amount of time based on your arrival, you are welcome…

Do you have outdoor seating for 3-4?

We sure do! Please request for it so we know that is your preference.

Do you guys do take out?

Yes. Our takeout when window is open on Coral St. Just call in your order and easy pickup.

Are there any menu items safe for someone with celiac? And if so is there any cross contamination

All of our boiled or steamed foods such as our seafood, corn, and potatoes are gluten-free. Some fried items such as our wings are also gluten-free. However, we recommend avoiding all of our fried items by anyone with a severe gluten allergy and/or…

Asked about reservations today for Friday. They do not take reservations any more. 5/19/2021. Anyone else say otherwise? Need to update the page

    We use Yelp Wait List.

Is your outdoor seating dog friendly?

Yes, the outdoor lanai downstairs is pet friendly. Please keep dogs on leash.

Am I able to do a sauce on the side to go? I asked multiple times but was always turned down... however I read comments on Yelp and they say yes?.. am I able to get more sauce or no?

If you order food, yes, you can absolutely have your sauce on the side. However, if you were to just order a bag of sauce on the side, then no.

Is it possible to get the shrimp with head off?

Aloha - Sorry, we don't take the heads off because it changes our cooking time and can further compromise the product, especially for takeout. With that said, with a quick twist and and pull that puppy will pop right off!

Carlos D, so does your location provide military discounts for all food including combo's?

We do provide a military discount, but combos are discounted already. So no, we don’t discount combos again.

I know the restaurant normally doesn't take reservations but do they now due to Covid?

Yes, due to COVID19 protocols, we are now taking reservations to minimize contact during wait times. The safety of our guests and staff are our highest priority. Hope to see you soon!

    Open for dine in?

Yup! We just went on July 27, 2020. They scan for fever at the door and you need to wear your mask until you're seated. They also have you scan a QR code w/your phone to access the menu.

Is there butter in the garlic sauce? Are they able to make it without it?

Yes there is. I am afraid it is the main component in the garlic sauce so no, there is no way to make it without it. The closest you can do to that would be to order your item "naked" as we call it. That is basically only the spices.

Do you guys do military discount?

Aloha Jasmine. Yes, we are very thankful for our military guests and happily offer a 10% discount (excluding alcohol)! Hope to see you soon, and Happy Thanksgiving!

Do you guys do take out platters?

Aloha Loriann. So sorry for the delayed reply! We do large take out orders, but they are served in bags rather than platters. Hope to see you soon...

This restaurant is right across the street from the Royal Hawaiian Center...which is where we parked. They're on the second floor up the escalators across from the Royal Hawaiian Center Starbucks. It's a little weird they don't open until noon on a weekday. I would have thought 11 but noon it is. They opened promptly at noon. There was really only a single employee tending to the host stand and the entire dining room. She was very efficient and helpful but I think they could have used more help out front. We knew what we wanted to order and told her two of the happy hour snow crab leg combos. She quickly told us that they were only enough food for one person each...which...when we re-read the menu...seemed disingenuous. These combos have a lot of food and to say only a single person can enjoy one is not honest. We also ordered two appetizers (mozzarella sticks and calamari) for four people (2 adults and 2 kids). The appetizers came out fast. The mozzarella sticks are good and i was surprised how many pieces are in the order. I'd recommend for sure. Cheese pull galore. The calamari included French fries as well. You could almost eat it as a meal. Maybe it was a meal? We got it with sweet potato fries. Not the best calamari I've had, but not the worst. Generous portion of calamari and fries at least...but the calamari lacked flavor. The seafood boils came out right as we were eating the appetizers. Very fast. They bring them in a big plastic bag which is standard issue for seafood boil. They also set you up with a rubbish bag for each boil bag. They open the boil bag for you and spread everything out for you to view and share. They provide bibs, gloves and scissors with shell cracker built in. The snow crab happy hour bags we got were I think $75 each and included one whole rack of snow crab legs including the body (4 legs). This also included several pieces of clams, mussels, shrimp (we did the peeled which i highly recommend compared to the head on - head on are a mess to deal with especially when piping hot), sausage, potato and corn and white rice. It was a lot of food. I say it's the perfect amount to share between 2 people especially if you have an appetizer. We got 2 for 4 of us and we ate most of it! Very little went to waste. We found ourselves cleaning up after ourselves partly because we both are just like that but also you could tell the waitress was busy with 6 tables. We tipped generously as she did take care of us, though she didn't stop by too much after our food was brought out. The spot itself is in a nice area and i like how they have a little sink area where you can wash up after handling a lot of seafood (the gloves tend to let some liquid through). They usually tend to have sports on the TVs they have. They also serve a variety of beers. Highly recommend if you have never tried. For me, it's one of the best seafood boil places in Hawaii. Good quality stuff!!!

I was honestly surprised to see a seafood boil place in a mall food court it's not something you come across often, so of course I had to give it a try! The food came out fresh and hot, and the shrimp had a nice Cajun flavor without being overly salty or greasy. The mild spice level was perfect just enough kick without overpowering the dish. The rice was a great addition to soak up all that flavorful sauce. It was $28+tax not bad for the amount of food. What really caught my attention was how quiet the food court was for a Sunday at 11am. Usually, this place is packed, so I was a bit surprised to see it almost empty. But honestly, that made it easier to enjoy my meal without the usual crowd or long lines. Overall, it's a nice hidden find if you're craving seafood while shopping in Waikiki. Prices are decent for the area, and it's a fun, unexpected option in a mall setting. I'd come back to try their other sauces next time!

They add cilantro on top, which I love, but know that there are people that don't prefer it. You get 6 pieces of shrimp, which isn't too bad for the amount that you pay. I also ordered the Cajun fries, which was really good.

I have been to the one out in Kapolei and the food was great & full of flavor. We decided to order the 6 pounder, which is $250 Lots of seafood. It looked great, but none of the Kajun flavors got into the meat and the food was not hot. The only thing that locked in the temperature was the crab & lobster.nothing had flavor. Poor execution of boiling the crabs & shrimp. And when we were explaining this to the manager all she offered was to give us a free desert and nothing else. She did not apologize for their mistake. She did not offer to comp us for the poorly executed meal. She did not reduce the price of the poorly executed meal she just gave us excuses and offered us a free desert. This is the reason why the Kaneohe location is not as popular as the Kapolei location. Very disappointed in the execution and preparation of the food. The service that we experienced and the way the manager handled the entire situation. Never coming back to this location ever again.

But once you do, there are four parking spots right in front. If you can't get one of those, it's street parking. The owners are really nice! The wife told me to sit wherever I wanted and I chose outside on the patio. I ordered Da Meat Combo plate. A well-seasoned pork chop. An old school fried chicken leg you'd think your grandma made for you, so good! And two tender delicious barbecue ribs! The cornbread was great! They were out of collard greens, so I opted for the mac n cheese. Me: Which one, potato salad or barbecue beans? She: The potato salad is more tangy, we add a little mustard, and the beans are more on the sweet side... Me: I'll take both, please. This rounded out my meal! I also had the fresh squeezed lemonade. And for dessert, a real hard choice, the peach cobbler with vanilla ice cream. This was a great way to end my meal. Such a wonder place to come to! Looking forward to returning!
