Stopped here tonight with a couple local friends before a show at the Guthrie. What a great spot! I ordered the Cacio e Pepe and added chicken, and then we also ordered the toasted focaccia bread for dipping in the sauce. As part of exploring my new neighborhood- downtown Minneapolis- I stopped on Sunday around 11:30 and was in the mood of breakfast burger. Even though they didn't have it on the menu, the waiter was very nice and said if that what you want will make it happen. It was very good, a bit crispy with a sunny side up egg as I like it. Giulia just might be my favorite Italian restaurant in Minneapolis. The vibe is just incredible, first of all. So much beautiful greenery and the design is well thought out. There's so much to look at and admire! You'll need to grab a reservation first. Otherwise, there sometimes is seats at the bar. My husband ordered the seafood pasta and I got the cacio e Pepe. Both were great! But honestly what stole the show was the suppli!!! It was perfect and I'll order of every time I go! We had taken a trip to Italy last year and have been trying to find something close to what we had been eaten when we were in Italy. This is the closest we've gotten so far. The drinks were also great! The bartender seemed to be an experienced mixologist and educated us a bit on his style and technique! It was a fun surprise. This is only a review of their Christmas brunch. I have not had dinner there. We should have learned, after the debacle at the Gnome Pub, to check beforehand what exactly a fancy place means by brunch buffet. This was a bad brunch buffet - maybe good for a Best Western in North Dakota, but not for a fancy place like this - and certainly not worth $30 a person. Dry, cold scrambled eggs. Dry, shrunken home fries. "Candied" bacon swimming in grease. I'd pay $10 for it. There was almost nobody there (hotel guests, I'd imagine), yet our server disappeared halfway through our meal. Anyway, this has left a bad taste in my mouth, so to speak. It'll probably take a while to get up the courage to try them for lunch or dinner. But 1) steer clear of any holiday "brunches" from this outfit, and 2) always get a good grip on what the brunch buffet actually is before making a reservation, no matter how trendy the place. read more

We came here as part of a group of 15-20 people, though we were split among 3 tables. Our server was assigned to our table and another table. She was kind but everything just seemed to take really long. By the time she took our order, the other tables had already gotten our food, and it was like already 30 minutes at the table. Then our food took about 40 minutes to come. And by the time we paid and got our checks back, it had been 2 hours. We didn't even bother asking for dessert because it would have just been too long. In terms of cost, it's about $20-30 per plate. I split the pasta and pizza with someone at the table but was surprised to see that it cost $7 to add mushrooms to a pasta dish, which is on the fancier side. The dish had way too much mushrooms and and not enough pasta in my opinion -- it had more salad than pasta. The pizza was fine but it was not hot -- rather it was warm and seemed like it had been sitting out. For over $30 for the meal, I wasn't completely satisfied and thought the food was just average. read more

Giulia is great for some DT Minneapolis cocktails and Italian. My friend and I sat at the bar and ordered the Suppli, which are two deep fried risotto balls--I substituted the Gorgonzola with parmesan because I'm picky. I ordered the Pork Ragu Pasta and it's like a bolognese with housemade pasta...so good and flavorful! Service was great, with both bartenders being very friendly and the wait staff bringing food and clearing plates. One bartender, Carlos, made me a green gin drink that looked like candy and tasted like juice--dangerous. There was a bit of a wait for the pasta but nothing astonishing or uncalled for on a Friday night. They open at 4pm and close early at 9pm so you have a small window to check them out! As far as the location, it's a hotel bar/restaurant inside the Emery. During the day you can check out Spyhouse coffee next door for some coffee and jungle-like atmosphere. read more

This restaurant sits inside The gorgeous Emery hotel. The esthetic is very green, fresh feel. My daughter decided on a whim it was time to tie the knot so her fiancé booked the private dining area- There was some issue with communication on setting the menu prior to the reservation, she had a difficult time getting a response so had to go to the location to meet with the manager (who ended up not being in that time) But the day of the dinner service and accommodation was exemplary! We had Tobi as our server for all 20 of us and she was magnificent- we felt bad there wasn't a fixed menu so we all ordered different items but she was completely unbothered and kind! The food was amazing- I didn't get pictures but the Burrata was a total hit - I also ordered the seafood cavatelli which was made to perfection - this dish is all about timing since the shell fish cook at different rates but all was perfect ! Wow. I was blown away by this meal. First the breaded risotto balls (Suppli) was outstanding. When I asked the server what his favorite appetizer he didn't waffle... it was an immediate conviction of this dish. He was spot on. The pasta dishes were two of the best I've had. At the end of the seafood cavatelli I was scooping the sauce all by itself in to mouth... with a fork. It wasn't easy, but I honestly couldn't let a drop escape the table. The maltagliati was amazing as well. The pork seemed to be pork shoulder but it was cooked perfectly and didn't have any excess fat. Just enough to be flavorful and juicy. read more

The interior of this place is beautiful. The high ceilings and beautiful plants are truly captivating. The food leaves you wanting more. From the warm meatballs to the crunchy crust on the pizza. Overall food was very yummy and came out warm and fresh from the kitchen. Only negative thing I have to say about this restaurant is the service. We had a party of three and made reservations well in advance and we were put in the corner of the restaurant almost like out of site out of mind. We didn't say anything thinking the rest of the tables were reserved. We felt disconnected from the space and felt forgotten by the staff. It was tough to get our waiters attention and we just felt confused as to why we weren't places somewhere more included. Very unfortunate given how good the food was. The brunch menu was pretty limited especially for vegan and vegetarian items. I decided to split the Napoli pizza, Nutella crepes and breakfast potatoes. The Napoli and breakfast potatoes tasted a little too salty for my taste but they had good flavor and texture. My favorite item was the nutella crepe. I liked the presentation, texture, and sweetness. The servers were also so kind and thoughtful. They went above and beyond to get our food to the table quickly and took the time to take pictures of our group without hesitation. I don't know if I would come back here for the brunch (just because of the limited options), but the service and ambience were exceptional. read more

Unfortunately this restaurant didn't even come close to our expectations. Our party of 4 had the Caesar salad, funghi pizza, cacio e Pepe, and the pappardelle. Not one of us loved any single dish. The Caesar was chopped lettuce (which I loathe, but is a personal opinion) but the dressing was very "meh." If we had to choose SOMETHING that was ok, it would be the pizza. The cacio e Pepe was a watery, runny, tasteless mess. We ended up having to send back the pappardelle as it was not edible. It tasted like the pork was rotten and the sauce was rancid. Start with the quick and easy: staff is very attentive, cordial, and knowledgeable. Even if they don't have direct knowledge they have heard from others and can report so it felt solid intel. Garlic bread is amazingly delicious; yes on salty side but super tasty. Parparadelle is a rich wine sauce, delish. Noodles fresh. Meat tender. A little salty but not too much. Napoli pizza delicious tomato sauce, dough is tasty and crispy, not enough cheese, was served more Napoli style margharita with cheese and basil as more an accent. Even so, very tasty. The open kitchen concept mixed with the high ceilings and greenery throughout the brightly lit atrium style restaurant brings me back to a Soho NYC style restaurant - trendy, chic, and sophisticated. LUNCH Crimini Frittata - This dish came with fontina, arugula, lemon aioli, and olives which was ok. The portion was very generous so you will definitely have some leftovers. Panini Manzo - A delicious smashed burger, red peppers, aioli, Gorgonzola , no pancetta, and onion crudo with fries was too good! I loved the spicy sauce on the panini. The fries were salty, long and thin to perfection. The patty was also very well seasoned and well done just the way I like it.- My fave lunch item! DINNER Prawns - Its all about the gravy! There was just the right amount of seasoning in the gravy. The Prawn meat was not rubbery or too mushy it a as just right. Clam Pizza - I could have eaten the whole pie if we weren't sharing. That's how delicious this pizza was. I am not a fan of the red sauce pizza so the fact that the base was oil and butter was a definite win. The clam was tasty and the crunchy crust was a win! Focaccia Bread with butter containing herbs and olives - I didn't see this item on the menu but after eyeing it at another patrons table we had to have it. We were celebrating our 40th Anniversary so chose this restaurant. our server was less than cordial and wasnt able to answer questions about the menu. we asked for non-dairy options which he dismissed. we ordered the salmon and it arrived very undercooked.and the polenta was like cheese soup. we sent it back and ordered a second plate of linguini- which arrived cold. we had to flag the waiter down 3 times- to order a second drink, get silverware and water refills. They offered us free dessert and we ordered espresso. it arrived cold. when we received the bill we were charged full price for the salmon and comped one order of linguini. They didn't even thank us when they brought the check. very disappointing visit and doubt we'll return. read more

Place looked pretty and light and airy so I stopped in for a quick bite. What a bunch of miserable bartenders. Flew in on a long flight connecting so a long day for me. Ran down to grab a bite to eat and literally waited for awhile before anyone cleared away the plates of the person before me. No one wiped anything down. They were so preoccupied with cleaning glasses of previous customers. Seemed like they couldn't wait to clock out. Literally three different women with miserable attitudes and it felt like I was at a diner with them trying to clean up. Threw a menu my way. I worried I was late and they were almost closing but they said they were open for another hour and half. So I tried to make a comment saying "everything ok?" and the response was "it's been a really long day" In all my years of travel I've never heard such a comment. You're in a service industry. I put off my review due to travel. But I celebrated my 41st birthday here with friends and the service was horrible. Jonathan the bartender was amazing. But that was it. My friends arrived earlier than the RSVP of 8:15. I got there at 8:03. I was told the table in the bar area right smack in the entrance was my table. I went to the bar where my friends were already having drinks and noticed a same table but off to the side. I asked could we have that table instead, the hostess said it was fine. At 8:15 we were going to the table when we realized Jonathan is our waiter as well. We order our dishes. I look at the table I had at first and noticed it's set for dinner (napkins dinner settings glasses etc) we hand nothing. I made the reservation a few weeks in advance and stayed it was a birthday dinner. Our meals came out with no silverware, napkins, glasses. We had glasses of water that were on one end of the table that's it. The manager was one of the people bringing out the food and I brought this to her attention. She deflected the responsibility to my group by saying "we" requested to be at the bar. I asked her is my first table not the bar area? She said yes but still had no excuse for why the difference in how they were set. She kept saying I had you a table but I thought you requested to be at the bar. No one requested that. She disappears. I think maybe another manager comes and apologize but still insults me by asking what can I do for you. As if I wanted something FREE. All I wanted was the same treatment as your other guests. The food was amazing but the service and lack of accountability may hinder my return or recommendation to others. First of all, our reservation was at 6:30pm. we didn't order until 7:30 ish meanwhile the people that came after us got their food already and on top of that our waiter was very rude. I completely understand that it was a party of 8 however we're still paying customers and deserve respect too. out of boredom we started taking pictures and they told us no which we understood and listened. The drink "La Rose" was disgusting, it tastea like medicine. I never want to come here again. I am not aware of the reasoning behind their actions. I'm staying at the Emery hotel for an extended work trip and this is one of the best restaurants in the area. The food never disappoints and it has a great vibe. I highly suggest also trying their newly established brunch. The americano plate and sausages are to die for along with their breakfast pizza. Seeing I travel alone I take service at the bar all the time. All of the bartenders are great but special shout outs go to Lilly and sully-they make the single diner feel welcome with great drinks and conversation. read more

Wasn't really satisfied with my panini but the long skinny garlic fries was boom! I'm generally not a big fan of hotel restaurants as too often they are all flash and no substance so when I learned the much celebrated Giulia was in the lobby of the swanky Emery hotel I was a bit apprehensive. Even though it's only been open a month, this impressive restaurant more than met my expectations. First the food: my wife and I shared and enjoyed items from the somewhat limited menu: -Table-side mozzarella (4 accompanied sides to choose from-fresh and luscious tomatoes, prosciutto & arugula, spicy mini peppers, olive tapenade). We made the mistake of assuming you could choose 1-4 for same $16 price. Alas, the order only comes with one, extras are $4 each. -Cacao de Pepe-beautifully presenter and mouth-tinglingly spicy (loved it!) even though it is not technically a dish from northern Italy (specialty of Rome). -Gnocchi with braised water buffalo (nightly special)-light gnocchi browned and served with fall-apart chucks of buffalo(like pot roast), doused with creme fraiche. Very satisfying. The wine: all Italian choices and are available by the glass or bottle and the quality and selection was decent. Was wishing for an extra half glass to finish things off but no such offering. The space: clearly a lot of cash went into the design-very striking with cozy pillows and beautiful wood and soaring ceilings. The service: alas still a bit of a work in process-our server Michael was very personable but he had too many tables to provide the level of service one would expect at these price points. Long waits for simple things like drinks, picking up check, clearing dishes. I'm guessing this will work itself out as they get more in the flow. Miscellaneous: parking is an issue-as it was a holiday weekend downtown was a ghost town so we scored a street spot a couple blocks away. Valet service would be nice. Bottom line: we liked Giulia and would definitely recommend it. The informative and theatrical mozzarella stretching is a must-even if it's pricey and the food and wine was great. A very, very mixed experience here. The seafood cavatelli was underwhelming. It was filled with little bits of garlic, yet for some reason the garlic flavor was entirely absent. The dish tasted overwhelmingly of lemon, which wasn't bad, but the individual flavors of the crab meat, scallops and shrimp were barely noticeable. And it's a very expensive dish -- $34 for a small serving that left me hungry the rest of the evening. The manager stopped by (unprompted by me) and asked my opinion of the dish. I told him exactly what I said above, and he was not only apologetic (which was appreciated), he seemed to be listening carefully to my opinions because he really cared. He actually looked disappointed when I told him that I didn't care for the dish. Everyone's taste is different, of course, and I'm not a professional food critic, but I had the impression he was actually planning to ask the kitchen to fiddle with the dish's flavor profile. I was impressed. He also offered to comp my dish because I wasn't satisfied, but I said that wasn't necessary. Dessert was a pistachio gelato that was absolutely delicious, as good as anything I've had in Italy. The next time I ate here, I ordered the Napoli pizza. It arrived with an appealing-looking crust, but the pizza had virtually no pomodoro sauce, just a few scattered splotches. In other words, the flavor was almost entirely a very bland burrata and mozzarella -- like un-cheesy cheese bread. I asked for red pepper flakes to liven up the flavor, but they were very strange. Entirely lacking in heat, and with a weird soft texture like they'd been sitting in a humid area for a long time. Exactly like the garlic in the seafood cavatelli, the red pepper flakes added absolutely nothing to the dish. My waiter asked me how my pizza was, and when I expressed my dissatisfaction, he immediately offered to have the kitchen remake it. The new version arrived promptly, had a decent amount of pomodoro and was much better -- albeit not the most delicious pizza I've ever had. My waiter was great -- attentive, professional, prompt and friendly. Just like the manager on the previous night, he actually seemed to care about my dining experience. Dessert, once again, was superb -- a delicious panna cotta. And the couple next to me had a chicken parmesana that looked wonderful -- in fact, they told me it was. So I have mixed feelings about this restaurant. Yet I would definitely come back, because they gave me the impression that they cared about their diners and are always trying to improve their food. read more

I returned here with my friend and my partner yesterday! We started with some focaccia and suppli al telefono, and definitely enjoyed both. The gorgonzola cheese in the suppli al telefono was very strong, understandably so. Then we had some entrées. The Napoli pizza was good, and I don't think I have ever had pomodoro sauce before, so it was a great experience. For the cacio e pepe, the pepper flavor was overwhelming while the amount of cheese was slightly underwhelming, and personally I would've loved the other way around. But it was still pretty tasty! The pappardelle was as good as I remembered last time. However, I have to say that the amount of food I was given was way too little to justify the price. I was only given one and half tiny pieces of pork ragu, and very little pappardelle itself. I have uploaded a photo for what I had this time, which would display a stark contrast to what I have had last time. In terms of dessert, both dishes were just as good as I remembered. My friend, my partner, and I were in agreement that our favorite was the chocolate panna cotta. My friend even began to search on Google how to make panna cotta. Overall it was still a great experience, especially considering that the business remained open during a snow storm. But I will definitely recommend looking into a more reasonable food to pricing ratio, if my case this time wasn't a outlier one. read more
