We were visiting Minneapolis to attend a concert and wanted to find a nearby breakfast spot. Hen House was a five minute walk from our hotel, so we gave it a try. The restaurant is quite large and super cute. We were greeted and seated right away. The walls have fun little things written in chalk and it is very bright and cheery inside. We received the menu and waited a bit before our order was taken. We did not need to wait long for our food to arrive. My daughter and I ordered the same thing with slight variations--Two Eggs, Potatoes, and Toast. I chose the Hen Potatoes which were amazing! Tender on the inside and slightly crisp on the outside--not greasy at all. My daughter had the hash browns, which were just as good--not greasy, but perfectly crisp and flavorful. The seven grain toast and jam were great and our scrambled eggs were cooked just how we like. My daughter also ordered a fruit cup, which was filled with a bigger variety of fruit than she expected and she loved it. I ordered a side of bacon and it was delicious. While the food wowed us, our service was just okay. She was polite enough, but did not check on us until we were well into our meal. Thankfully, we didn't need anything. Our check and my payment were dealt with promptly, which we appreciated. We also ordered a caramel roll to go and were very glad we did. Super tasty and not overly sweet. If you are in the area, stop in. You will not regret it. The prices are higher, but it is worth every penny. We will definitely be returning when we are in the area. read more

I visited Hen House during an early December trip to Minneapolis. I was able to navigate there through the skyway from my hotel. As a solo diner, they put me up at the bar stools near the check-in. The place was decorated for the holidays. They have mugs with sassy sayings and a whole merch section for Hen House aficionados. I had read that this is a popular spot due to its all-day breakfast, particularly the breakfast cocktails, cinnamon rolls, and Southern-style fare. I ordered a cinnamon roll - the only one available was the berry which wouldn't normally be my first choice. It is huge! Super sweet. I also saw that folks recommended the crab eggs benedict. I followed this recommendation and wish I hadn't - it's not what I'd normally get so I don't have a good reference for how good it was or wasn't. To me it was fine but I kind of wish I'd gotten something else, especially for $23. Overall this place has personality and makes good diner style breakfast food. I'd order differently next time, but there would be a next time if I re-visit Minneapolis. read more

My initial thoughts when I stepped in were that I was stepping back in time. When I worked downtown a decade or two ago, Peter's was the place for breakfast and often lunch. THough Peter's is missed, Hen House has really made the space their own in a wonderful way. I was very pleased with a number of vegan choices on their menu. I walked to Hen House Eatery from our hotel using the skywalk. I found it on Yelp and the reached convinced me. I was not disappointed. I placed the order when I arrived and had hot food ready to go in no time. I would have loved to have sat there and ate as the place seemed very inviting and local. We ordered something like a classic breakfast (pancakes, bacon and eggs) and an omelette meal. Everything was delicious and you could tell it was made to order. As I waited for my meals, I was able to shop around the area nest the register that had cute Knick-nacks . We made our way here through the skyway on a -21 degree morning. The restaurant wasn't too busy due to the cold weather and we were seated immediately. The worst restaurant experience I have had in recent memory! Came in on a Friday to a busy restaurant. Sat at the bar and was ready to order before the server came up to me which was over 5 minutes. I ordered coffee and an omelet from a rude and obviously frustrated middle aged man working the bar by himself. It took about 10 minutes for my slightly warmer than lukewarm coffee to be delivered with some attitude. The 2 young ladies sitting next to had obviously been waiting a long time so after about 30 minutes with no contact from my server I asked what was going on. They told me they had been waiting for over an hour for pancakes and French toast!!! When their food finally arrived it looked very sub par and rushed when cooked. At the :45 minutes mark I paid for my coffee and told the server my wait was too long to which he responded "fine" with attitude. I told him I know it was not his fault but I wasn't going to wait any longer. He shook his head at me and didn't respond further. I have worked in restaurants and must say this was a terrible experience. I will never try this establishment again and will be sure to warn my many colleagues to avoid at all costs. read more

We stopped in before the Pride Parade this past weekend. We were worried it was going to be busy but we got seated right away and it wasn't crazy busy like we expected. Two of us ordered French toast and the other two ordered omelets. However, when the food came out we were still waiting on an omelet. Our server stopped by and noted we were still waiting on it but then never came back. I finished my meal and a different server came to collect the dishes so we asked about our friend's omelet since we couldn't get our servers attention. The remedied this quickly and comped our omelet but we wish our server had checked on us sooner, she was checking on the other tables but never looked our way so we couldn't wave her down. Luckily I ate fast and another server stopped by. I got the cinnamon whip French toast with a side of bacon. The French toast was fantastic and I loved the whip cream. I got 3 pieces of bacon as my side of bacon and they were good, your standard bacon. The kicker was when I got the bill and it was $7 for a side of bacon while my French toast was $15. That is absurd for a side of bacon so keep that in mind as they don't have sides and their prices listed on the menu. Overall, service can be hit or miss here but the food is good! They also run out of their signature rolls quickly, so that's another incentive for not waiting; their rolls are to die for. We had the pumpkin cream cheese roll and it was swoonworthy. One standout of Hen House is their customer service. The place is busy and loud, but the servers are always attentive and helpful. I ordered the Lupita's Breakfast Burrito and got calorie remorse. There were not enough eggs in proportion to everything else to make it seem like I was actually eating a breakfast burrito. Way too many vegetables in it for my liking. I also didn't care for their red or green salsas - I got both. Service wasn't great at the counter. It took 5 minutes before I was acknowledged and another 20 minutes before my food came out. Also, when I was asked if I wanted guacamole with my burrito, I said "only if it comes with it." It was served to me, so I figured it was included. When I received my check, there was an extra $4.00 charge for the guacamole.
