I've held off on writing this review because I wanted to make sure that I put the right words to the story Spoon and Stable helped me build for my ten year wedding anniversary. My husband and I like to do quirky celebrations, and for ten years of marriage I wanted to celebrate it and spend time being intentional about the growth and love we've shared for this decade of life together. To say Spoon and Stable hit it out of the park is an understatement. We got a space near the kitchen to watch the chefs make the magic happen, and EACH dish was simply incredible. I have never in my life had an eyes closed "MMMMMM" moment, but I had multiple moments of wow all starting with drinks at the bar and ending with a perfect desert that we took with us. Don't skip the oysters, don't skip the extras, don't skip the witty banter with your service staff, DON'T SKIP OUT ON THIS PLACE. It is absolutely worth every single penny. read more

How on earth is this place still open. The food here is overcooked, tastes like spoiled food, & terrible service all around. Especially their desserts tastes really old. Everytime I've tried something here, I get a stomach ache for couple days, especially their old tasting desserts. 1st time stomach I thought it was just a fluke. Third try & 3 stomach aches later from the same place here & you're out of my books lol. Never again, No clue how this place has any business. I'm so glad more places have opened up in NL. Especially the Bellecour restaurant, the desserts there are 1000x better than the days tasting old crap that is served here at SnS. The interior is gorgeous, however, the entire establishment is a 0/10. I would not recommend this place to anyone. What an embarrassment this place is serving bad food to patrons. A little too proud of itself faux-lux restaurant in North Loop Minneapolis. Supposedly a James beard winner, this place has all the pretentiousness of a nice restaurant without the quality. Had the crudo which was probably the best thing we ate. Orecchiette was thick and tough. Had the steak which came way overcooked and had to be refired. Sampled the pork chop and it was tough. Overall we enjoyed it but for $500 they should do better. read more

Wonderful experience! First, the atmosphere of the restaurant was great. Lots of seating but not super crowded, nice dim lighting (but not too dark), and it was busy but it still didn't feel overly loud. The servers were all amazing, one of the best experiences I have had at a restaurant here. Very prompt, friendly, and accommodating. I tried a variety of the food items and everything had a great depth of flavor. My favorite was probably the black truffle arancini, which is actually a bar item but you can still ask for it at a table. Definitely a more upscale place to go for a nice dinner date, but would recommend trying it out. read more

Not to be dramatic but this is one of the best places to eat in the Twin Cities and I will be dreaming of this menu for days, weeks, and probably months to come. Do not dine here if you're into mainstream dishes and lack of seasoning but DO dine here if you like flavor bombs and culinary mastery. Wow, what an experience! Mark made our anniversary very special. The staff was also very accommodating. We checked in and had some time so we ordered a drink and by the time it came out we received them at our seats. Mark then came by and went over the menu with us. Ultimately, decided on ordering the pea and asparagus salad, duck breast, and the honey cake for dessert. The salad was a great starter light and refreshing. Big fan of the egg on top to balance the acidity. Flavor bomb all around. The duck breast was the most tender cut I've ever had from a duck. Fiddle heads were a nice compliment too. The beans were spot on too absorbing that duck ju. Onto dessert, mark helped us decide on the honey ice cream cake. Ice cream was very smooth and the cake was light and moist. Outstanding meal! Interesting variety of dishes that were well executed. To start with, we had arancini and Bibb lettuce salad. Arancini were delightful- crisp exterior with creamy interior that was not too heavy. The salad was light and refreshing. The halibut with tom yum broth was delicious- the broth was flavorful and the halibut was perfectly cooked. The spaghetti Nero was incredible - the pasta was perfectly al dente and the seafood sauce was delectable. For dessert- we had the lime leaf pavlova- the mango paired perfectly with the ginger ice cream and coconut tapioca- always appreciate desserts that are just a bit different than the usual dessert options at restaurants. The Talladega Burger was an excellent choice as well. The Cocktails: If you enjoy spirit forward drinks, go with the Oaxacan (a blend of Mezcal and bourbon), and not in the menu an excellent choice is the Huntsman. I came here for a nice dinner with my parents on a Sunday night. I made reservations online a couple days prior but the only available times were 8pm and after. You can make reservation for either the Chef's counter or the main dining room. I had the following: * (8/10) Oysters - Tasted very fresh, one out of the three was way bigger though. Presentation was nice with the horseradish topping and bottles of sauces like red wine vinegar. * (6/10) Venison Terrine - interesting dish but sorta hard to eat. The bread was not cut through and was really tough to pull apart. * (9/10) Capelletti - fantastic! I got the full portion and I loved the filling. The pasta is cooked al dente(?) not super soft, which isn't normally my favorite but it was a very unique taste with the brown butter * (6/10) Mini Beignets, didn't really feel like beignets more like mini donut holes. Also the dried apple slices and pretzel things were very hard. My parent both really liked the entrees, the Atlantic Cod and the Spotted Bass. My dad REALLY liked the bass, and wouldn't stop raving about it. My mom got the Toffee Butter Cake but said it was too sweet for her tastes. My dad also got a coffee, which they refilled for free. The interior was dim but really nice with the open kitchen and floor to ceiling windows cellar. Service was a bit slow to start but in general was very attentive. They were very detail oriented with switching out plates between courses, etc. Their bathroom was sooo nice. They also have paid valet parking. My family just parked on the street over. We read about this place and couldn't get reservations, but someone said to go early and get bar seating. We came on a Friday evening and only waited like less than 5 minutes for a bar seating. We scored! I started off with a whiskey sour and man, it's one of the best whisky sours I've had, the foam was amazing, and it was the right balance of sweet and sour. Love it. I wish they added a luxardo maraschino cherry tho. For food- I got the bison tartare and my friend got the hamachi crudo. Both were excellent. My bison tartare was the best I've tried. It's really good. The only thing I didn't like was the socca. They had bread service so I just used that bread instead. Their bread was delicious too. Couldn't get enough. For my entree I got the spaghetti Nero. It's a fra diavolo with octopus, mussels, and prawns. A half portion was good enough. I was so full after this dinner. Everything was excellent! They came with some compliment dessert bites at the end. Totally recommend this restaurant! I'll come back whenever I get the chance to come back to Minneapolis. read more

We visited on a Sunday morning and were so glad we reserved a table online a few days ahead. By noon it was packed with a long line out the door. Parking can be a little tricky since it's street parking and paid, but it wasn't too hard to find a spot if you don't mind walking a couple of blocks. Everything we ordered was delicious, from the drinks to the brunch dishes. I highly recommend trying the croissant. It's huge, perfect for sharing, and absolutely yum! The steak was cooked beautifully and definitely a good deal for the price. I also loved sitting by the open kitchen and watching the chefs at work. It added a fun energy to the experience. Spoon and Stable always hits. My favorite dish is the Honey and Cream Cake. The crunch of the meringue is such a treat paired with the fluffy cake and cream. The Strawberry Cornmeal Tart with lemongrass ice cream was delightful too. Each cookie layer was perfectly baked. The strawberry and lemongrass flavors were very subtle. When we got the check they brought out additional lil sweets which was a nice touch. The host and staff at Spoon and Stable are consistently friendly and nice! The bar is gorgeous and the bar seats are comfortable. The bar stools near the front of the restaurant are a little tight and would be better for a lil dessert or apps and drinks. Will return for food, ambience, and service. We've - Black truffle arancini - Duck - Halibut All are very good with a wide range of flavors; slightly on the salty side, which I love, except duck. They apply the sweet, tangy sauce on the skin. In Hong Kong, a savory sauce is on the side, which I have never used. In Beijing and China, for that matter, ducks are consumed without it. No need to balance out the gamy taste. Oh, right, this is USA -:) The sourdough bread shaped like a football is warm, chewy, and yummy. However, they blend butter with cream (?) that deludes the butter. Two red wines are delicious. They give a hearty pour for testing. The Rona stems are nice and cubby. I didn't order another one, k it because we're heading to the Twins' game (what a loser am I! They're the second-last team and are playing the last-place team--Chicago White Sox. The stadium is practically empty.) We arrived at 4:40. They only offer bar food until 5 pm for the full menu. Employees outnumber customers. I asked if I could video the kitchen, and they said yes. It looks busy but harmonic. WNK knife. The napkins' design is elegant, but I think they're artificial. If anything could be changed, I'd like them to remove the fake flower above the bar and serve us real butter. Oh the sweets they offered before the bill are great, especially the short cake (?) and macaron which is delicate and fluffy, not overly sweet: it's the best macaron I've thus far. We visited Spoon and Stable for their New Year's Eve tasting menu. This is my 3rd Gavin Kaysen restaurant and as always - he doesn't disappoint. Some of the food we had was the best thing I have ever had - fois gras, pasta, all of it was very good! The staff is incredibly knowledgeable and accommodating! The atmosphere itself is swanky and hip! I felt very sophisticated. The only downside, and I should have expected this from a tasting menu, I left hungry. Some times I feel you shouldn't leave hungry when paying that much for a meal.... Other than that everything was great! I need to go back and try ordering from the actual menu vs. going there for a tasting menu. read more

This is one of my favorite spots in the city - you can really tell that they are dedicated to the work that they put in their dishes and value quality. The staff were great and our server Allison was so kind and helpful. We started with the Scallop Crudo which had a strong flavor profile of pineapple. It was almost like eating your crudo with a tropical-forward cocktail. It's definitely unlike anything I've tried before, but with the citrus flavors from the kumquat, it was delightful. The Bison Tartare was also very good and the flat chickpea/hummus chip paired so well. It was a whirlwind of flavors that almost leaned towards Mexican flavors. Highly recommend this one. Their heritage grain pastas all sounded so good but we decided to go with the Pappardelle that featured duck chorizo. Everything about this dish was SO good. The pasta was cooked perfectly and the savory sauce was full of flavor. There are two prices on the menu that reflect the size of the dish. The small portion was easily sharable between my partner and I, considering that we got 2 starters, the porkchop and a side of snap peas. I would recommend the large if that will be all that you're having. Our server noted that their Spaghetti Nero is typically always on the menu - this was another pasta we contemplated on getting. We also got the Pork Chop which was incredible - cooked perfectly well and the tamarind glaze was heavenly! We paired it with the Snap Peas which was a great combo. You got the grill taste from the Pork Chop and a nice smokey flavor from the Snap Peas. For dessert, we went with the Vanilla Sweet Pea Creme Brulee which was delightful. It almost reminds me of a subtle pandan-like flavor which I really enjoyed. Overall, always a solid spot for a special dinner! read more

I was super stoked that I got to come here for my birthday. It is truly a joy to enjoy a meal in this gorgeous space. With reliably excellent service (thanks, Elly O!) and creative and delicious options, I know I am in for a treat whatever the season. We arrived a bit early and hung out in the bar before we were seated. I was stoked to see some new options on the mocktail menu and decided to go with the Groundspeed, which was ultra refreshing and not too sweet. It was a lovely exclamation point at the start of the evening. The menu was (as usual) filled with delicious options, and none of us could resist the spring vegetable salad, which was a lovely composed salad featuring tender and colorful vegetables, a bright vinaigrette, and creamy Brie. Blissful and beautiful. For my main, I ordered the vegetarian version of the lamb duo. This is one really cool feature of eating at the Spoon and Stable--there are always vegetarian versions of at least a couple of the entrees. I really dig this flexitarian approach to food--you'll get a really nice-looking plate that is really similar to the non-vegetarian main. The only difference is that the anchor is a vegetable instead of a piece of meat. In this case, it was a cauliflower steak. (I swear, every time I have cauliflower here or at demi, I think it's the best cauliflower I have had in my life.) In this case, it came with green almond romesco, baby carrots, fresh garbanzo beans (treat!), and a blissful sauce that was made of, I think, tamarind and joy. We also had the creamed spinach, which should not be missed. Topped with fried cheese curds, this is a creative and oh-so-Midwestern take of one of everyone's favorite bits of comfort food nostalgia. Finally, it was time for dessert, which was delicious. I just had to try the spring dessert, a vanilla sweet pea crème brûlée, which is just the prettiest dessert I ever did see. (Really--look at the pictures of it!) It was one of the most fun-to-eat desserts I've ever had. The sweet and creamy crème brûlée, topped with a crispy bit of cookie lace, was sweet and mild. The rhubarb was bright (as were the little minty pearls). The sorbet was bright and refreshing. The almonds were salty and crunchy. All in all, it was a delightful exclamation point at the end of the meal. I was also absolutely tickled to get a little birthday treat--a cloud of cotton candy and other some vanilla ice cream. It was really nice and felt like another hug. I love the blend of modern and nostalgic, the creative and comfort, and familiar and exotic that I get when I dine here. Overrated and overpriced. Had the lamb chops and they were blah. Underseasoned overpriced, very disappointing. I've had better at a more reasonable cost. I'm a visitor from out of state and doubt that I'll ever be back to this restaurant again. Had the lamb chops because that's what I was expected to order. The tab before the tip was $400 for five of us. I don't think we got our moneys worth. But I'm an old fart and This place was not my choice. The others thought that the meals were terrific. Service was excellent and attentive. I had a difficult time picking something from the menu that interested me. I'm sure this place attracts a certain clientele who are impressed with their James Beard award and local reputation. I guess I'm just not impressed by a restaurant that can't season lamb chops so they have a nice flavor. This one failed in my opinion. read more

Sunday night was a bitterly cold and snowy night in Minneapolis and our visit here made it so worthwhile to make the jaunt into the elements! The 4 of us came in for my sons birthday as this was a place he had requested for our annual event to celebrate him for his 26th Bday. Our server Mark was amazing, he was professional yet personable, he was funny and and knowledgable of the food and the drink. I am personally not a foodie, my son and my girlfriend are adventurous eaters and took full advantage of the S&S menu. My sons stated goal that night was to eat as many different rypes of seafood as possible, and he was ecstatic. My sons girlfriend was super pleased with the GF options! The NA Drink menu was excellent! The Bison TarTare, the Oysters, and the Red Oak Salad started us off wonderfully! The Spotted Bass, Spaghetti Nero, the Cappeletti, Creamy Spinach and Broccolini were fantastic. And they even indugled the food Heathen that I am by allowing me to get the Burger off the bar menu. This is the 3rd or 4th time coming here and there is no moment in time where I questioned the flavors at this place. The service and ambiance are well balanced, which show a finesse for detail and care. As simple as possible, you have to eat and drink here. If you don't then you probably miss out on some of the best food in the Midwest, if not Central US. Don't pass this place up. We snagged reservations on a weeknight here in the dining area. There's also the chef counter, which is bar-style seating right in front of the open kitchen. Here, you can watch them cook. (I think this is a really cool option). I've heard reservations can be challenging to get but the weekday wasn't an issue. We were seated on a small two person table that was less than a foot away from the other tables on both sides of us. I felt a huge disappointment when I saw these seating arrangements. When you go to a supposedly high-end place like this, you don't picture it to be this close of quarters. It's awkward and I can hear the strangers conversation next to me. If you're going with a group of two just sit at the bar or chefs counter. The ambiance was also so lame and boring! All grey and white walls with dim lighting. Where's the creativeness or uniqueness? On to the food: We started with the venison terrine. It was a fresh, cold, meat spread that would be great for charcuterie. It was served with some small baguettes. Then we proceeded with a small portion of the ricotta gnudi. The pastas come in small or regular portions. The small portion came with four gnudi dumplings. This was a lovely buttery, cheesy but simple snack. Next came the entrees: roasted sturgeon and pheasant breast. The pheasant breast was cooked perfectly but lacked flavor in my opinion. I didn't understand the sausage ball that came with it. I wanted more apple and mushroom flavors with the meat but I just didn't get any of that. I tried my partners sturgeon and it was meh. I got a lot of mushroom flavor that was an odd pairing with a fish. The best part of the meal was the dessert. The chocolate budino was delicious! But also, how can you not like dessert? Everything was plated beautifully but I wasn't very impressed with the flavors. Overall, I probably wouldn't come back here. The prices are high for tiny portions that really didn't give me any wow factor. Maybe I'm missing something? Service was just fine but it was hard to hear her. This was an amazing experience from beginning to end. We ordered oysters to start. The presentation was beautiful. Then had the curry soup, it was phenomenal. It had crab, pumpkin, micro greens - it was perfection! Then we ordered the yellowtail Crudo. The perfect little bite and tasted awesome! I had the cod dish. It had some buttered crab on top and a citrus sauce. It was good. My husband ordered the pork chop it was amazing, but the portion was big. We couldn't finish it. And the layered chocolate dessert (chocolate pudding, caramel toffee layer, crème fresh). Overall it was an amazing experience. We were able to order from the bar while standing at a high top waiting for a bar spot to open (which took about 10 minutes). The service was quick and we got our drinks right as a bar spot opened up. Going here and not eating was painful given my absolute love for everything on the menu. Really cool restaurant downtown by Top Chef alum Gavin Kaysen. Started with prosciutto with buffala mozzarella and it was good, but not anything too special IMO. The strip steak was perfectly cooked and had really great beefy flavor. It appears to have been sous vided first and then sliced and you get 2 pieces per order with a nice sauce and foam. The creamed spinach with cheese curds was fantastic, both the spinach, but especially the cheese curds! The chocolate budino was fantastic. Super rich and decadent, you'll struggle to finish it. A really great light whipped cream covering some toffee bits with the pudding underneath. Really lovely. Service was great, very knowledgeable and friendly. Beautiful restaurant and clearly very popular by the crowd that was there at 9PM on a Monday night. read more

We got the pressed rabbit terrine, grilled carrots, mediterranean bream, dry aged duck breast, and honey and cream cake. The pressed rabbit terrine and grilled carrots were both ok (3/5) but quite expensive for how much food they were. The bream and duck were both great (4.5/5) and so was the honey and cream cake (4.5/5), although they also were relatively small portions. The entrees were definitely the best value but still a little pricey. The service was phenomenal (5/5)! Our waitress was super knowledgeable about the menu and clearly answered questions about various dishes. The staff were very attentive; whenever I'd take a sip of water, someone would come refill it. When I went to the bathroom, someone came by and folded up my napkin and put it on the table. The service justifies the premium prices. The interior of the restaurant is well decorated. It is pretty dark inside but is definitely a good date/special occasion spot. Overall, it was a good but expensive experience. I am excited to go again and try some of their seasonal items such as the pheasant, but I will definitely pass on appetizers next time and likely snack a bit before coming. read more

Charming Spot for a Special Night Out Great ambiance--perfect for a date night or celebrating a special occasion. The service was excellent, attentive without being overbearing. We really enjoyed the salads and the summer ravioli--both were fresh and flavorful. However, many of the main entrées didn't quite live up to the rest of the experience. Took several years for me to finally try the venerable Spoon & Stable. They don't offer multi-course fixed menu anymore so we literally tried 75% of the menu. Beautiful modern "farmhouse" style interior with lofty ceilings with natural lighting. However, it was kinda hot and muggy (sitting too close to the open kitchen wood fire grill?). Overall the presentation and service for the experience was great BUT no single dish stood out for me. The flavors were subtle. If I had to choose my favorite it would be the strip steak very tender. We had a wonderful experience here. We had a bottle of the riesling wine and it was delicious and light. Very yummy for a wine. We ordered the bucatini and raviloi along with the cheese curds and they were all delicious. It is a pricier restaurant but well worth the price for the food and atmosphere. The service was also amazing. Our server Ty was the best and really made our experience great. I would highly recommend for a special occasion like birthday, anniversary, or date night.
