Alma is such a great coffee and brunch spot!! They make their own syrups which is one of the main things I look for when I'm going to get a coffee (no monin syrups in here!) They also have really good matcha. I tried their biscuits and gravy brunch special and it was really savory, flavorful and a good ratio of biscuits, meat and gravy. For only $12 I thought it was a great deal! There's plenty of seating inside and I love the decor. Everyone working there has always been friendly and kind. Yet another hall of shame moment for never getting over here. A very busy Sunday after church in NE, so this was on the way home. A parking spot with my name on it. I got the Up South cause I'm a sucker for pimento cheese in anything. A very fluffy biscuit, a totally square sandwich where nothing falls out. Flavor in every bite made it perfect. I was expecting to be critical after a super long wait from an online order past the estimated 20 mins but oh my God, the food overrode that completely. This is one of the best breakfast spots in the Twin Cities and rivals my love of Sun Street Breads. Corner Store - breakfast sandwich - 10/10 The bacon is thick cut and crispy, melty American cheese, toasted roll that tasted like brioche. Croissant - 10/10 This has got to be top 2 or 3 croissants I've ever had in Minneapolis. Crispy, flaky, buttery perfection. My wife and I make a habit of trying every little bakery and this is elite. Like early Bellecour days. Chocolate chip cookie - 9/10 Really good, chewy, good ratio of chocolate. Crazy busy because it's a weekend, I got it to go so I can't comment much on the ambience but it's a cute spot. They could probably triple their seating and still fill up. It is very good. It may not be outstanding, hence the 4 stars. This is a review specifically for the restaurant side, and you're going to have to sort the cafe/hotel/restaurant ones. A lot was on point. They had super interesting wines by the glass, the appetizers were outstanding, my duck breast was served with a perfectly smoky pepper reduction, and it was fun watching the open kitchen. We also appreciated the creativity of the uni spaghetti we were served. They do a no tipping/hospitality included model, which is nice to know what you're getting. But also, a lot was a bit off. Water took 10 minutes to get even when all the waiters were waiting for the kitchen to plate the next course. Cocktails were uninspired, basically just the flavors of the classics but with extra price. Dessert was additional, and honestly I think if you're going to do a prix fixe (which I love), do it as appetizer-main-dessert. Said uni spaghetti was creative, but lacking in balance, especially compared to the pear-nduja bruschetta (lovely) and said duck breast. The vibe was perfect and as I watched the staff work while I waited for my order, they were the definition of efficiency. And the food! 5/5 on all items: steel cut oatmeal with brown sugar, apples, and pumpkin seeds / Ham Jam sandwich with onion jam and a touch of maple syrup, and rosemary smashed potatoes / pumpkin spice latte. This is probably closer to a 3.5-star review as it wasn't quite a true 4, but was a bit better than a 3-star. Alma was a place that I had wanted to try for a very long time, and while some things hit the mark, the full experience left a bit to be desired. First off, service began a bit slow. Was probably a good 6-8 minutes once seated before anyone came with water or to even greet us. That wouldn't be a huge deal at a lesser establishment, but a high level of service should be a staple here. Luckily, it did pick up and improve from that point. The atmosphere was as advertised. Very chic, dim, and romantic. A bit cozy between tables, but all in all a solid environment to dine in. For food, there was a mix of outcomes. First up was a few little snack-type items including some cheese, breads, nuts, and olives. Nice little mix of small items. Next up was the Poached Pear & Endive Salad - a very unique, crispy, and enjoyable dish. The Duck Liver Pate was a bit overpowering, but a nice contrast in flavor to the other first plate. Following this were the pasta dishes, which were quite solid. The Meyer Lemon Orzo Pasta was fresh, the Alma Rigatoni was rich. The rigatoni was definitely one of the standouts of the evening and a borderline 5-star dish. For the main entree, the leg of lamb was good, but the accompaniments were a tad underwhelming. The meat was cooked well, was tender and flavorful. Overall, the dish was just maybe a hair above average. The second standout behind the rigatoni was the dessert, a Brown Butter Caramel Tarte. It was one of the best desserts I've had in quite some time! The sum of the parts left things in pretty good standout, but only 2 of the dishes really stood out for the level of venue that Alma falls within. The rest being closer to average or thereabouts left this experience a bit below expectation, but certainly not a terrible one by any stretch. read more

Went to Alma Cafe on a Saturday afternoon and found a cozy spot to enjoy a delicious latte and lunch. The place is so pretty and has such good ambiance. I ordered a rosemary maple latte (wow -- super yummy!) The Ham & Gruyère melt with crispy potatoes is by far some of the best things I've eaten in a long time. The potatoes were perfectly crisp on the outside and tender on the inside, with the right amount of saltiness. I've thought about how delicious tastes since I last had it. After another amazing meal, I think that Alma is my favorite place in town for nicer dinners. They just do so many things really well from clever and well thought out cocktails to tasting menus that progress you through a broad theme in an incredible way. Some highlights this time were: Hiramasa Tartar was part of the Antipasti (which are always really clever). This one was so fresh and delicate that it made believers of non-raw friends. Smoked Wild Mushrooms was a very cool salad featuring those mushrooms and beets and a slight truffle flavor. Roasted Sea Scallops sat in a light coconut sauce with crazy good caukiflower Sweet Corn Cream. Brûlée was amazing. I doubted how it would work and was wrong. I could have eaten three. Exquisite. The saffron rice-chickpea-tahini plate is a top seller, and no wonder: it's delicious! They add crispy rice on top as an extra touch. The menu is wide, letting me eat vegetarian while one friend enjoyed a ham-butter sandwich and another, a turkey burger. Ice tea is strong and refillable. Chocolate chip cookie for dessert has the hidden treasure of crunchy cacao nibs, yum! What a great dining experience for our anniversary! The ambiance of the restaurant was great, with beautiful decorations, great seating and tables. We were seated in at a table for two in the back in a cozy corner. And by cozy, I don't mean small! Tables were spread out to give you privacy and intimacy. The restaurant uses compression and release in its interior design to give it an intimate space while being open and a larger space. It also allowed us to have a conversation and it not to be too noisy. The staff were very attentive and knowledgeable of the food and wine. Our server, phoebe, was a delight and made us feel very special on our night out! The food - was fabulous! We opted to try everything on the nights options for the fixed dinner. Each course was timed perfectly, and we were given a detailed description of everything. Phoebe was also right behind with the wine pairing for each course. Visited Alma Cafe on a Sunday late morning to try a limited, special dish that was only going to be available that day. It's a super vibey, hipster kind of place. The feel and decor is nice but by no means original. Very typical of what you would expect in the neighborhood. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it. There is a service counter as soon as you walk in with some pastries. Gift shop kind of goods and a small cold to go case in the foyer area. Beyond that you will find a bar area with dining in the back. The place was packed! We ordered at the counter to dine in fully expecting to end up taking it out because of the amount of people seated and waiting for a seat to open. The seating in the cafe is first come first serve, seat yourself. Much to my surprise we snagged a table literally moments before our food was ready. Perfect! The meatball sandwich that was on special I went for was phenomenal and leaves me excited to come back. All the food coming from the exposed kitchen looked incredible. WOW WHAT AN EXPERIENCE!! I've been here a few times over the years and it's always been amazing, but I think this was the best one. Right from the door warm welcome offered to take the jacket and an option of seating. The space is absolutely gorgeous and really sets the tone right away. I cannot remember our servers name but the young gentleman with the mustache at the bar was excellent. He even got me to try blue cheese, which is insane lol. Everything about the night was special and not just because it was the first year with my wonderful lady although that does help. Everything on the three course menu was exceptional. It would be hard to pick a favorite, but I think the scallops and the duck would be standouts. The cookery on everything was impressive to say the least you could tell the kitchen really takes pride in their craft. Had to reward talent with a round haha! My wife and I spent a weekend at Alma's Inn and had dinner there on a Saturday night in late March and it was simply fabulous from the minute we arrived to our departure on Sunday. Our dinner on Saturday was superb -- we opted for wine pairings with each course and they were spot on. I don't think you can go wrong with any of selections on the menu, but our highlights were the celery root soup, the toasted rye & buttermilk crepe and the roasted duck breast & confit. We arrived early for our reservation and hung out in the bar for a few minutes. I was really excited to learn that they had a seasonal shrub--it's the perfect summer option. The bartenders were really nice and very knowledgeable, and the bar is comfortable and attractive. Our table was ready soon after we arrived, so we headed over to the restaurant side. Friends, this is a really beautiful restaurant. It's the perfect blend of modern and classic--it's elegant but completely approachable. I could imagine my most put-together and classy friend hosting get-togethers in a space like this. Shortly after we were seated, our server Olive came by with the first of our antipasti--olives and spiced almonds. These were really enjoyable. Orange zest is a great seasoning for olives that doesn't show up often enough, which is a shame because it's really nice. The almonds paired the sweetness of brown sugar with the bite of pimenton. They set the tone for the rest of the evening. Next up came a flurry of other delights. There was a bread plate with Hope butter and flaked salt. There was a slice of truffle aged Gouda cheese with a dollop of pistachio butter (deep green and velvety, slightly sweet--unlike any other cheese accompaniment I've had before in a very good way). There was a warm garlic flan topped with crispy Parmesan and shiitake and surrounded by a tomato broth. My favorite was probably the crispy cauliflower, which had a beautiful jewel-toned rhubarb compote, golden beets, and shiso.. the combination of flavors, textures, and temperatures was so darned inviting and intriguing. The first course included two dishes: a soup and a tartine. The tartine was grilled sourdough topped with ricotta, heirloom tomatoes, and avocados and drizzled with a carrot vinaigrette (beautiful color, beautiful flavor). The chilled corn soup had roasted corn, crema, and charred herb oil. It was a real show-stopper: all elements of the soup but the thick, creamy corn broth were at the base of the plate, and the broth was poured over. The bright oil rose to the top and created beautiful swirls as we ate. It was a very attractive dish in addition to being delicious. Both of the dishes in this course made excellent use of the flavor of the grill--the charred elements added a very nice bit of bitterness that played nicely with the sweet, creamy, starchy, and acidic elements. Around this time, I finished my shrub and ordered one of the other zero proof drinks on the menu--the Citrus. It's yuzu, mandarin, and bitters, and it was absolutely amazing. It somehow tasted like a mix between serenity and the beach. You know that feeling you get when you come home after a long day and exhale the breath you didn't know you were holding? It's that feeling plus toes in the sand. It's that nothing to do but enjoy feeling. (Try it even if you're not a non-drinker.) For my main, I chose the grilled marinated tofu. It was really tasty. They absolutely nailed the ginger-tahini sauce, the caramelized garlic went beautifully, and the braised daikon radish? Flawless. There was also water spinach that was cooked perfectly. I realize that this was my first time seeing tofu in a fine dining setting. They nailed it. The side that came with our mains was probably my favorite dish of the evening: blistered beans and shishito peppers. Pleasant heat, kimchi sofrito, grilled plums, and tons of fresh herbs? That was the best bean dish I've had in my life. For dessert, there was a real sonnet of a dish. Sweet, composed, and beautiful, it was a lovely way to end our meal. Apricot-buttermilk sorbet came served atop a lemongrass anglaise and sprinkle of matcha crunch. A macerated raspberry on top added a bit of tartness and a beautiful blush. There were also some beautiful cookies: a madeleine, a macaroon, and shortbread. Very nice indeed. Alma is an absolutely wonderful place to dine. The service was stand-out (thank you, Olive!), the food amazing, and the atmosphere very comfortable. It would be a great place to enjoy great meal and conversation, celebrate a special occasion, or just savor some great food. It's very good for vegetarians, and the bar has fantastic low-proof and no-proof options in addition to regular cocktails and wine. I especially appreciated that they brought out a separate menu for me, the vegetarian). In some cases, it can feel like the vegetarian option is an afterthought, but here, it was seamlessly integrated. In many cases, my dish was almost identical to the non-vegetarian option (with just a small substitution of a non-vegetarian ingredient for a vegetarian one or a slightly different treatment of an ingredient to produce a similar flavor). I visited Alma for a private wedding celebration and WOW, WOW, WOW! The dining space was located towards the back of the restaurant. It was small but intimate, and beautifully decorated by Alma. First, the service was outstanding! The waitresses were incredibly prompt, kind, and knowledgeable of menu questions. They were also very accommodating for those with food allergies. Second, the 5-course meal that was served was outstanding! My favorites were the Marinated Olives, Spiced Almonds, Arugula & Fig Salad, and the Seared Massachusetts Sea Scallops. Stopped in to Alma for breakfast recently, and we were unfortunately quite disappointed. We came with our dogs to be able to enjoy our meal at an outside table. There was one table out front with diners while the rest of the tables were pushed up against a wall. When we asked if we could use one of the outdoor tables, the ladies behind counter coldly responded with a "no". We were told we weren't able to enjoy our breakfast sandwiches at the restaurant that day, but that our food would be ready to go shortly. We then proceeded to wait 35 min for two breakfast sandwiches, and when we asked during the wait how much longer it would be, the staff was extremely rude and short with us. The breakfast sandwiches were delicious once they finally arrived, but they were not worth the wait nor the very rude service. Café Alma in Minneapolis is one of those spots where you immediately feel like you're in good hands. From the moment we walked in, we knew we were in for a perfect evening. The vibe is relaxed but polished--comfortable enough to feel at ease, but with just the right amount of elegance to make it feel special. We were sat in the mezzanine which allowed us to experience an even more private feel of a dinner. But honestly, it's the food and service that really make this place shine. We went with the pre-fixed menu (fall edition), and it was a fantastic choice. Every course was perfectly timed, allowing us to really enjoy each dish without feeling rushed. It felt like the meal had its own rhythm, which you don't always get at fine dining spots. The pacing was spot on, and we never felt like we were waiting too long or getting pushed through the meal too quickly. The staff here are top-notch. What stood out to us was how genuine and unforced they were. It's so refreshing to experience service that feels both professional and personable--there were no rehearsed lines or overly scripted interactions. The servers were knowledgeable, attentive, and made us feel like we were guests in their home rather than just patrons at a restaurant. This level of hospitality speaks volumes about how well the restaurant is managed. As for the food--wow. Everything was incredibly fresh, and you could really taste the quality of the ingredients. The lobster "stew" was hands down our favorite dish. The broth was rich and flavorful without being too heavy, and the lobster was perfectly cooked--sweet and tender. It was one of those dishes you wish you could have again the next day. The dessert was also a standout. The sorbet especially --light, flavorful, and the perfect way to end the meal. Definitely a highlight. We were also really impressed with how well the kitchen handled a dairy-free request. We were able to enjoy the full seasonal menu without missing out on any of the flavors or creativity. It was nice to see a place that could accommodate dietary preferences without sacrificing the experience. The only small critique we have is that the pork tenderloin course didn't quite hit the same high note as the rest of the meal. The flavor was good, but it felt like it might have been a cut of meat that wasn't the best quality and on the chewy side of things. That said, it didn't take away from the overall experience, and every other dish more than made up for it. Additionally, the beignets, which came with the pre-fixed menu as one of the three desserts definitely lagged the quality of the sorbet and macaroons (dairy free cookie option) which were outstanding. All in all, Café Alma is a must-try if you're in Minneapolis. The service is on point, the food is fresh and seasonal, and the whole dining experience feels well thought out and executed. I felt I was eating a series of passed hors d'oeuvres - almonds, cheese, bread? And overall, not visually appealing. Was I expecting some foam and caviar ... for the price, yes! The only app that stood out was the crab flan. The main dishes - the Arctic char was good. The duck was a bit overcooked and confit was dry. Dessert was good ... liked the basil ice cream. The restaurant itself was spaced out in a series of rooms. It never felt too jam packed and loud. Still very intimate. I really liked that about the ambiance. Service was exceptional. Wait staff was perfect. Only one correction - local Hmong farms... pronounced Mong (h is silent). Not ha-mong. Overall it was just ok and not worth the price. We have been wanting to come here for the tasting menu for a while. It's so fun when a dining experience exceeds your expectations! There were so many incredible bites that it was hard to pick a favorite. We loved the warm garlic flan and crispy pork belly but when the chilled sweet corn soup came, we were blown away! Stopped by the Alma Cafe a few weeks ago to meet up with a friend who was visiting for a quick brunch bite. I did street parking just a few blocks west of the restaurant on University and there were plant of spots even despite the snow blocking many of the options. Alma is split up into a few different components: the cafe which I visited for breakfast, the dinner restaurant which is an extremely fancy prix fixe menu type of place, as well as a small hotel. I visited only the cafe as the rest are currently outside my budget, but hope to visit one day! This place was packed when I entered and seats were hard to come by, but after a few minutes of waiting, a table got up and we were able to snag it for ourselves. There are two ways to order here: either wait on the line at the front or order on your phone using the QR code on the tables. Since we were already sitting down we decided to use the QR code. For myself, I ordered the Smoked Turkey and Salami Sandwich, and my partner ordered the Baked Egg Strata which I was able to have some of as well. I was so happy with the sandwich, it was relatively reasonably priced considering the quality, it was very well filled and all the ingredients seemed fresh. The pickled peppers worked perfectly, and the salty flavor of the meets was balanced nicely by the freshness of the peppers and flavor of the bread. I can't exactly articulate what made this so good, but it was definitely a special sandwich. As for the strata, I also loved this item. It's been years since I last had a strata and this reminded me exactly of why I used to love them so much. Packed with vegetables this was so flavorful and I love the texture. This is definitely a cafe I recommend for the food explicitly, I know a lot are just cool places to work and study, but this really is a great place to eat! read more
