I've been to Darling a few times but never felt the need to write a review. My most recent visit was exceptional. It was a busy almost upscale brunch but there plenty of seating in this neighborhood breakfast spot. Countertop ordering but then they bring it out and refill coffee, etc. The corned beef hash had a somewhat spicy glaze that perfect zip for me, and the goat cheese salmon scramble was a good combo too. I would have to say borderline 4, but not ready to love it yet. The space is nice and located right in a residential area so it would very nice if a person lived right by it to walk across the street. I didn't know breakfast was counter service, but since we were there pretty early there was no wait. We both ordered The Beverly (Two eggs, bacon, bread and potatoes). Potatoes were okay- no flavor unless you dipped it in the mustard. Bread was tasty and the jam was okay- not sure what type of jam it was, but it wasn't the standard. A little pricey for what we ordered- standard breakfast fare, jam with a flare. Service was okay- didn't have a ton of interaction. Water station was fairly warm water. Would possibly give it another try. Nice place to catch up with a friend. read more

Went to darling for a late morning birthday brunch with a couple friends, and it was a perfect slow brunch for a group of 6. Order at the counter when ready, and the food is brought to you. Staff were super friendly and helpful. Perfect for grab and go or stay awhile. Holy cow was the breakfast burrito delicious! Definitely have to get the Dutch pancake as well. While the brunch experience has always been great, the dinner experience leaves something to be desired. The staff are always wonderful and they do full service for dinner (instead of order at the front for brunch). We were going to see a play at Mixed Blood and they were wonderfully accommodating so we could get to the show on time. My partner had the lamb special and they liked it. I got the burrata pasta dish and was disappointed. It didn't have a lot of flavor and didn't really have a sauce, though there was some tomato in it. It tasted like watery pasta with burrata on it. We will definitely return for brunch, but I'm not sure if we will be back for dinner. Maybe I just picked the wrong dish. The ambiance is still lovely no matter the time of day. read more

Surprised it has taken me this long to visit, but it has been hard to get over the Birchwood closing (rip). Had a lovely dinner with the Cashbars (and Atticus). Sat out on the patio and didn't go inside so I'm not sure about indoor ambiance, but the patio is so nice. Love the flowers all over. Our server was cutie and food came out pretty quickly. Ellie and I split the grilled ruby and the maitake tartine. Both were good. I liked the blush vinaigrette on the salad a lot. Was suprised how much I liked the grilled ruby, because I'm not normally much of a beet person, but with the avocado and all the pickled things it was very good. Lowkey I wolfed the maitake tartine down so fast I cannot remember a single thing about its taste. I was so hungry. Tried a little of the bucatini and thought it was a little bland. read more

Brought the kids here for dinner last night. The experience was mostly good, with one big caveat (see below). The service was great; the server helped us find a place to sit that would be best for two kids, she was attentive, and the food came out pretty fast. The menu is small, but all of the options were appealing, and they also have a kids menu. They do label GF and Vegan (although not DF, but they will help you with what options do not have dairy). My daughter ordered the butter noodles kids meal and I had the fish fry, with my son sharing some of mine (he's 1). Everything tasted great; my daughter said the noodles were some of the best she has ever had. My fish fry was good too. The one major issue was the portion sizes...they were woefully small. My daughter could have easily eaten two bowls of the noodles, and she's only 4. I could have done with another piece of fish and more fries (my son did have a bit of mine, but even had he not, the meal would have still been too small. Sadly, I had to make both her and myself another meal when we got home. The ambiance was nice, and they have high chairs and a bar. Other than the portion sizes, everything was great, but the prospect of eating here once and then eating another meal back at home to fill up will likely keep us away in the future. read more

Darling was very peaceful on an early Sunday morning. The breakfast burrito and the breakfast potatoes were delicious, and the bacon was cooked perfectly. This is an incredible breakfast spot! It's located in the old Birchwood Cafe location. Lots of space to sit inside, and it's order at the counter service. I ordered the trout scramble ad thought it was amazing. The Potato's were especially delicious. Crispy on the outside, fluffy in the middle. Darling is truly so darling! Went for a work breakfast with coworkers and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Plenty of parking outside and not busy at all for a Friday morning. It is a seat yourself, order at the counter type of place, but a quick and easy process. We each ordered a beverage, all of which were quite tasty! The vanilla latte was moldy sweet and creamy, very good espresso. The elixir drinks were funky and fun. The highlight of my experience was the waffle. Savory, sweet, crispy, and delicate. Upon ordering, it isn't what I would typically go for but the flavors just worked! Quinoa, sweet potatoes, cheddar cheese, maple butter, syrup, and pickled jalapeños. Definitely add bacon and an egg. All I've been able to think about it when do I get to go back for more. The potatoes were crispy and cooked well. Overall, such a satisfying experience. read more

Ambience is so nice, and food is good. However service was terrible. Blond, white lady was BS. I ordered scrambled egg, and waited more than 30min. I asked about my order and she said there was delay because they were busy. After confirmation, she brought me cold dish immediately . I believe she forgot to bring it to me. I feel like this location has been the home to many gems over the years, and Darling is no exception. I love this neighborhood, so walkable and filled with charming houses. There's lots of street parking, a beautiful large patio in the front, and inside is flooded with light. The chicken Caesar salad was a generous size to fill the plate, lightly dressed, and the chicken was moist and fresh. The falafel salad was definitely the best thing we ordered - generous falafel that was crispy and light, with flavorful tomatoes, and a cool creamy yogurt sauce - simple and perfect! The avocado toast would have been 10 times better if the toast had been crispy, but it was more like warm bread. The pumpkin seeds on top almost gave it the crunch it needed, but not quite. The servers were attentive and friendly, the coffee was delicious, and the menu is enticing. I can't wait to be back and try more things! read more

I won't lie & say that I don't miss Birchwood, but Darling is a good substitute: excellent entrees and delicious beverages & service! I opted for their short rib sandwich-it was amazing! Tender succulent rib meat and tasty cheese toasted! The waffle that I sampled from my dining parter was unique-savory & sweet! Healthy corned beef (or beet) hash was also very good with more interesting vegetables than usual fare. We ate indoors today but the patio dining is still open (and dog & bike friendly). Came here for a nice brunch on a Sunday Looking for a little something special and I found it. Nice Outside when I pulled up and proceeded to the restraunt where I was greeted friendly and was told how the establishment is being ran. Got a menu and looked thru and there's a wonderful assortment of delectable dishes that was calling my craving. I ordered the Trout Scramble and of course what I seen calling my name the Dutch baby ! Arrived around 7:15 am on a Sunday morning, the only place near the University of St Thomas open early. The trout scramble and drop coffee absolutely hit the spot: A wonderful crispy and chewy slice of buttered artisanal bread, creamy and flavorful eggs, and crispy potatoes. Decent food, relaxing atmosphere. Service is a bit lackadaisical. Place is brightly lit and decor is a bit sparse. The menu is light on breakfast fare, but it's well prepared. I've been there twice and had the trout scramble both times. Could have been a bigger portion. Potatoes were lukewarm. You're on your own for amenities like a glass of water. There's a spout and glasses near the entrance. Coffee refills are slow. The two women working counter and tables seemed equally interested in the customers and their phones. We go there when our usual haunt, Standish Cafe, is closed a couple times a year. I'd go to Darling again but it isn't my first choice. read more

Darling's is very similar its predecessor the Birchwood Cafe -- in terms of the kind and quality of food, service, the prices and ambiance. Which means it is a lovely place to meet up with friends and hopefully it is becoming the neighborhood institution that the Birchwood was. I've only gone for breakfast, but in particular, the scrambled eggs were creamy, the aioli on the potatoes was very tasty. I hear their Dutch Babies are amazing. The food was great, and the coffee was fine although not as remarkable as the food. It looks like they have a nice happy hour as well. read more

I've visited Darling twice now and I am eager to return and try the rest of the menu. First time, our family came for brunch. I ordered the gluten free savory waffle and an espresso martini. While the drink was superb, the waffle was just alright... not as crispy as I had hoped for. My mom had the trout scramble and chai old fashioned which she both loved. My second time at Darling was for the gluten free fish fry. Darling has big shoes to fill after Birchwood (the previous business in that space) PERFECTED gluten free fish fry. I liked the dish, but felt they skimped on the side of cole slaw and tartar sauce. read more

There were many things I liked about this place and a few things I didn't. I thought the exterior of the building was less than standard, but the inside is spacious and has a bit of a higher end feel. It's certainly a positive how the inside feels, but the outside and inside really clash. They need to find a way to spruce up the outside of the building. The corned beef hash was decent. I thought it was a plus that they added Brussel sprouts and asparagus and a tasty spicy sauce to the dish (think spicy buffalo sauce on chicken wings). Although the corned beef was a bit tough, even cut into very small pieces to help compensate for that. I prefer tender, juicy and larger pieces of corned beef in my corned beef hash. Owner: the secret is in how long you cook the corned beef, low and slow. The staff were friendly, but I find it odd that in a restaurant that looks higher end on the inside, there isn't wait staff. Rather you order at the counter like at a McDonald's. Again I think that is a bit of a clash. The prices were slightly higher than I would have liked to see, but I've seen higher for similar quality food, so I can't complain too much there. I would go back, but it wont' be a place I'll frequent often. Maybe a few times a year type of a rating if that helps. I'll be curious as to what some of the other menu items taste like. read more

This is one of my favorite places in the country to go out for breakfast. I live in Wisconsin and ate here when it had a different name but it feels basically the same to me under either name. Fresh, creative, sparkly vibe, hearty meals. I am a vegetarian so love it when there is better food and ideas than I might have the energy to cook for myself- my friend and I had Corned Beet hash which was delicious and a tofu scramble full of cauliflower and more. So Darling occupies the former BWood space which was a favorite place for a long time before the implosion. What you need to know is that Darling is...awesome! We are here right now for Sat lunch and I will say I am add it to the restaurant rotation no doubt. We ordered some basics out of new restaurant caution but every element was expertly prepared- loved it! Both the food and service-fabulous! We tried the mushroom "crab cakes" served w greens and pickled onion. Off to a great start: hot (temp), crunchy, tangy, fresh herby tartar sauce. Then, gnocchi, probably the best dish I've ordered out in forever. I added chicken, my son bacon and both were excellent. We followed with key lime pie and a chocolate croissant. I would return for just one of any of the above. Favorite part of our meal was being able to converse easily with a full dining room and fun 80's background music playing.
