I found out about District Relocators via Yelp. I called a few places for quotes and time frames, etc. The weekend is more busy and more expensive. I spoke with Mike and he gave me a quote to move from my current location to the next place. The quote had three movers and big truck. I also received a discount by saying I was referred by Yelp. I did want to think it over before agreeing to use their services. Mike called me the next morning to find out my decision and the move was confirmed. They also called me the morning of to confirm and they were on time. The move went very smooth. This was my first time using movers so it was weird for me to just sit there and not help. But they wrapped everything with plastic wrap or blankets. The movers were very professional and nice. Most importantly, these guys were STRONG! The truck they brought did not have a ramp, so they lifted all of my furniture in the truck. I was beyond impressed. Since this was my first time using a mover, I found out that they have a box limit. So I moved any breakable or personal items on my own. Thank goodness that they also take apart your furniture if needed. These guys were phenomenal. I would have taken apart the furniture myself if I could but that was not physically possible. I'm a picky person, so my items remaining in tact and just as good was critical and they did a great job. I would definitely use this company again and would recommend their services. read more

My husband and I used District Relocators twice. The first time they did a decent job and they looked so good on yelp that we booked with them again. During the second experience the actual move was fine. The movers were really friendly and quick. Unfortunately, they broke three items during our move. Accidents happen and we had purchased the optional insurance, so we weren't too worried about it. We found the process to get paid for our broken items to be arduous and frustrating. The woman that answers the main phone number is polite and very sweet, but she was not able to help us with the claim. We were told that only the owner could handle our claim. The owner was difficult to reach and largely unresponsive. My husband is ridiculously persistent, so we eventually got paid, but it took leaving messages every day over the course of three weeks,and threatening to file a formal complaint with DOT (they regulate insurance for movers) before we FINALLY received payment. Ultimately, we did get paid a fair price for the broken items, but the experience of having to badger him for the money was a negative one and a huge waste of time. Arrived over two hours late due to maintenance in the morning. No one called. I had to call ten times to speak with someone. They brought extra people because of this but still completed the move in the quoted amount of time. We found District Relocators on Angie's List and decided to hire them based off of other reviews. We completed the online quote generator and reached out to set up a move date. We heard back relatively quickly with a tentative date and time of their availability. We responded immediately and scheduled. We received what looked like a form email a short time later with all of the terms of the move included, but it didn't confirm the date and time. My husband reached out to the manager (Corey) asking to confirm that the date and time we'd agreed to was, in fact, what was scheduled. We did eventually hear back from him - but it had us second-guessing our decision for a couple of days. Fast forward to moving day. Our move started off with a phone call from Corey letting us know that the truck that our movers were using had broken down and they were waiting for a new truck. He also told us that they would go ahead and send the team to our apartment to start prepping our furniture. Frustrating, yes - but at least they called! When the team did show up (on foot - carrying / pushing the wrapping and padding materials for a few blocks!), they didn't waste any time getting started with wrapping and padding our furniture to get it out the door. The new truck arrived within about 45 minutes of their arrival, and I didn't really feel like our overall time was impacted at all due to the truck mishap. I was really glad that the truck had broken down prior to our belongings being loaded into it! The move was seamless. The team moved almost everything from the truck into our new house with ease. There was some trouble moving our (very large) sectional couch into the basement, so they had to stop and unwrap it outside so it could be taken apart before coming through the door - but again, they made it work and they reassembled the couch in the basement. I often judge a company not by the mishaps that arise, but how a company handles those mishaps when they arise. Because of the truck breaking down and the team starting our move late, District Relocators knocked an hour off of the overall price without us asking for it. In my opinion, that's good customer service -- they acknowledged that something had gone wrong and they gave their customer something as a way to say "I'm sorry." It was greatly appreciated. I would definitely recommend District Relocators to others to assist with their move. Overall, the move went great and the team of movers was superb. They were not only really good at their jobs, but they were enjoyable people to be around as well - and that makes all the difference! read more

Mixed feeling on the move. So on the one hand we had some unexpected difficulties and they handled that extremely well - they responded quickly with a quote when I contacted them (faster than a number of others) after I had to cancel on my original movers (Bookstore Movers) due to unforseen circumstances. During the move itself when we got to the new building the elevator broke! It became a Herculean task and they were great with all of that. The reason I'm of mixed opinion is the number of things that got damaged. Thankfully only one major thing got damaged (Some strong wood glue will fix it) but half of the boxes completely fell apart because they were tossing them around. These were not overloaded boxes and they should have been plenty sturdy. Most the stuff inside was well packed so there was relatively little damage but things were falling out of boxes as they gave way. They were just rather rough. A few furniture items had minor scratches on them. I had to stop watching them packing up because it was making me anxious. So in a pinch, yeah I guess I would hire them again. Overall it was good, but I'd probably go with Bookstore Movers first if I could. read more

Overall they did a good job and the move took the amount of time they quoted. I was very happy that my husband and I decided to get movers instead of trying to do it ourselves once again. What prevents me from giving them a better score is that they were 2 hours late and while their crew had 4 people only 1 or 2 of them seemed to be professional movers. The crew lead (I wish I could remember his name) was great - he did an excellent job taping up all our furniture and keeping our large screen TV safe. However the other guys seemed lost, they were putting big boxes on top of smaller ones, dropping stuff, and standing around waiting for the lead guy to tell them what to do. My move was definitely not the smoothest. The movers showed up 3.5 hours later than the original start time. I was booked originally for a 2:30 start, with a 30 min window. Linda emailed me the day before saying the movers might be as late as 4. This definitely wasn't ideal as my building manager at the new place likes to have moves done before 5 (although it sounded flexible). I figured 4 was still okay as we'd be done not too late. However, the movers didn't end up showing up until 6 - 3.5 hours after the original start time, and 3 hours past the original window. What made it worse was that I kept calling and the start time kept being pushed back, leading me to wonder if they'd ever get there. Apparently the morning moves took much longer than expected. However, I think the company would plan for some sort of buffer for these types of things. Now, for the positives, they did send me 4 guys for the price of 3, which helped speed things along. Also, the movers were very professional and very quick. I had the entire move done in 2 hours flat, even though my new place has stairs that they had to carry most things up. Also, nothing was damaged. I also got a discount for being late, although not a terribly large one. If the movers had showed up on time, this would have been a great move. As it was, it definitely added stress to an already stressful day. I'm not sure I would use District Relocators again. read more

We hired District Relocators to help us move our furniture + belongings from a 1 bed/1 bath junior apartment in NoVA (i.e. really small, tight corners so getting furniture out is BIG fun!) into a 2 bed/2 bath apartment in DC. We previously hired District Relocators to move our belongings fro a storage unit in SE DC to NoVA back in May of 2011 and they did well (see 4 star review). The crew arrived 30 minutes early (8:30 AM instead of the 9 AM to 10 AM window we were originally given), which was great! Although we had reserved parking, ppl had parked in those spots but the crew made do. The crew consisted of Faison, Nate, and Tim. They were friendly and got right to work after talking with the hubs about a few logistics. And man did they work fast! They wrapped up our living room + bedroom furniture and loaded into the truck quickly and safely i.e. no dropping or nicking. They did the same with 2 large paintings that we own and other misc. boxes. Once loaded up, we headed straight to the new place - and, of course, ppl were parked in the spots we had reserved. But, again, the guys made do. They quickly brought things down into the unit and screwed legs back onto the tables, the couches, etc. They were done well within the 3 hour window we had hired them for. Overall, Faison, Nate, and Tim did a great job and we were very pleased! read more

Found on Yelp for a long distance move from North Carolina. Initial interaction was cordial, but lacked professionalism. Received no instruction beforehand, had to prompt them for a pick-up time, and they showed up 50 minutes late. The movers were nice. They were quick, although in my case too quick, they moved a roomba that did not belong to me, and I had to ship it back to my former land lord. They also appear to have lost the $50 charger for it. It's been over a month and a half, but the issue was finally resolved. Corey, took a while to get back to me, but was nice and helpful. I don't think this is a 5 star business for sure, but with more organization and a better after sales service, it could move that way. read more

I had come to dread movers as much as I dread moving, but these guys changed all that. They were so efficient, professional, friendly and moved quickly! My entire move (1 bedroom) from the north part of Silver Spring to Alexandria took just under 5 hours during Friday afternoon rush hour. Kareem, Shawn, Will and Mike got everything taken apart, loaded and put back together in under half the time it took me a year ago. The guys didn't stop moving the entire time and seemed to work really well as a team. The charge was spot on. I love that their charges include all materials, gas, etc. My only minor complaint is that it can sometimes be difficult to get hold of Linda, who does their scheduling. They were amazing and I will definitely use District Relocators again. read more

Update: A few days after writing this review, the company refunded the amount they had incorrectly charged me. Based on that I am updating my review. Read below: 1) the move itself: 5 stars (if it were possible to give 6 stars for this component alone, i would) - day of the move - absolutely flawless. 2 of the 4 guys arrived early. they started taking stuff out of the house to the curb so that when the truck arrived they could load that much quicker. but since the truck wasn't there, they didn't start the clock. they loaded up two different apartments into one truck and then unloaded us into the new apartment in about 2 to 2.5 hours. the crew was super friendly, super efficient, and reasonably careful with our stuff. no damage to the walls, and no major damage to any possessions. the only issue was at the end when they tried to erroneously charge us for stairs , which is really more of a customer service issue (see below). 2) Customer Service: 1-2 stars - booking was relatively straightforward - fill out an online form, speak to a lady named Linda, get an estimate, sign a contract, and then wait for your guys to arrive. - they obviously don't do a good job of communicating to their moving staff because those guys tried to assess a stair fee when it clearly wasn't warranted under the terms of our contract - 8 weeks of trying to get a refund was insufficient to get anybody to make this happen. only by posting a 1 star review here was I able to get someone from the company to do the right thing and refund the excess charge (the letter and check are dated 4 days after this review). it doesn't seem like they have a great system or processes for customer service, and only take action when their rep is threatened. ____________________________________________________________________________________ Original: At the end of the day, the most important quality in any business is honesty, and this business is simply dishonest. When I got my quote, it said in black and white that charges for stairs would only be assessed if there "two flights of stairs or more at the same location." Despite the fact that no location had more than one flight of stairs, our moving crew charged us $60 in stair fees when we got to the unload point (one flight for each the two locations where we were moving out of and one for the apartment we were moving into). I argued with them for a long time, but ultimately felt the need to pay them, and told them we would dispute this with their management. I called management, who acknowledged that I did not owe the stair fees, repeatedly said they would honor the terms of the original, written quote, and continually promised to send a check. It is 11 weeks later, and I have not received a refund. If they cannot be trusted to do something as simple as honor their own black and white, written charge sheet, they cannot really be trusted to honor anything. Very good experience with these guys. Had rough moving experiences in the past, but these guys did a great job. Big shout out to Mark, Jermaine, Sean, Kenobe, and Gregory. Very professional guys. They work fast, know what they are doing, and should get a raise. We paid $1225 (plus tip) for a 6.25 hour job with an extra truck. Totally reasonable. The only disappointment (and the only thing preventing this from being a five star review) was the company's refusal to take a credit card. I understand paying the interchange fee sucks, but this is 2013. The smallest business (like mine--tax prep) can use Square to accept a card on the spot and pay less than 3%. Get with it, folks. Highly recommended, and it would garner a full five stars if they make payment easier. read more

I recently moved and used District Relocators for the second time in two years. Both experiences were solid. They arrived on time and completed the move in respectable time. I have a one-bedroom apartment and although it took slightly longer than I had expected it was still under 4 hours. Having three movers definitely made the process smoother than times that I have moved with two movers. They even tackled having to move a few of the larger pieces down a few stairs with relative ease. I would highly recommend them and would use them again. read more

I really wanted to give them a good review. However, let me give you the rundown of what happened with my move. Disclaimer: I've given them several weeks to rectify but they've gone missing. In short, I used them some time ago to do a move from NYC to DC. No problems, the move was ok and no major issues besides a missing glass piece. I decided to use them again to move back to DC from NYC. The guys ( I won't mention names) moved my stuff pretty quickly considering I had walk-ups in both locations. At the time of the move, I thought all was well. I even gave a 60 dollar tip for EACH mover. As I am unpacking, I decided to turn on the TV. To my surprise, the TV was considerably damaged. There's huge damage to the TV. I reported this to they're "claims department". After much back and forth with images and discussion, they agreed to replace the TV and stated they would drop off the replacement within the next week. Well. It's been 3 weeks later. I've reached out many times and still no response. To conclude, enter at your own risk if you have valuable items. I think they mean well but unfortunately they are not easy to work with if any of your items are broken or missing. I'm highly disappointed and regretting using their service. read more

They were so fast and efficient, but spent their time wrapping and protecting my furniture. We used District Relocators for a move in late May 2016. We used them to pack our entire house (three floors) and move everything in-town. The front office were kind and professional and unflappable, very nice to deal with Holly and Linda. The moving team onsite dealt with parking issues like the professionals they are and never bothered my wife or I with anything other than "where should we put this big heavy object". (we got emergency no-parking signs like you're supposed to, but of course people ignored them-- and we were not about to have our brand new neighbors towed on our first day in the neighborhood!) Best kept secret in DC for moving~ Just moved today! I promised Corey that I would write a review. So it is. I've actually used movers 3 times in the past 2 years for corporate move (because its' free). This time, I am doing a personal local move, so I was going to do it on my own. I had to move my 1 bedroom stuff in a storage with 3 other friends. How much harder it is to do it on my own! It took us 4 hrs and many other mini trips to pack left over. So I decided to look up professionals again when I was moving from the storage to my new condo today. First, I found one on Google with a really cheap price, then I found a lot of bad reviews on Yelp. Then I found a couple highly rated companies with a lot of reviews, but they were not available during the dates that I requested. So I went with District Relocators, highly rated, but fewer reviews. Yes!! They were available! I moved from Alexandria to Fairfax, about 20 mins drive. They quoted me with 3 hrs minimum + 44 dollars on gas & milage. That's including driving time & moving time & all the trucks. The hourly rate was $105. So total was $359, and I mentioned I found them on Yelp so -$50. Total $309 + tips (optional, I gave $30, not sure if that's supposed to be good or bad). The estimated start time was 130pm to 2pm. The 3 movers (including Corey) came at 150pm and finished in 2.5 hr!! Nothing was broken. And I had a lot of stuff that were already in bad shapes, because this is the 5th time I moved all these stuff... =( As someone that moved around a lot, I would definitely use them again and recommend choosing them. (Hopefully, they will still be available after they become more popular). read more

Given my past experience with movers I was pleasantly surprised how smoothly everything went. My first impression was with Corey over the phone and he was more than accommodating since I kept changing the move date. He fit us in for a morning move and the guys showed up on time. There were three guys Will, Rodney and a 3rd guy (who's name I'll dig up and add) for a small one bedroom. I have to honestly say, they worked together so efficiently, the move was over in 2 hours!!! Seriously, the most stress free move I have ever had, we even grabbed breakfast and ran other errands during the move. To top it off, they've got the best prices, the quote was exactly what we paid, there were no hidden fees or any of that non-sense. I spoke with Tony and he set my move up. The crew showed up on the day we had an appointment; they were 40 minutes after the stated start time, but accounted for that in the cost without me having to point it out (and actually charged us a bit less than the rate agreed on based on the actual time). They were professional, worked very hard, and moved all our stuff as desired. They did drop a single box and broke some pottery which had been labeled as 'fragile', but this was at least partially my fault because some of my boxes were not packed very well at all, and so the box underneath the one which fell crumpled and caused the fall. Given how much of my stuff they had to move, I think that less was broken than I would have if I'd moved it myself. Overall I was happy with the service they provided, and would definitely use them again if I needed to move in the area. read more

It has been over a year since our move and we are still trying to get money reimbursed for the thermostat that the movers broke. When you call their office number a call center will answer, take a message and then no one will return your call. The nice call center lady does not know how you can speak to an employee of the company. It's so shady. I have called numerous times throughout the year, sent my receipt for reimbursement, and emailed them as well. Nothing. No response. No call. No reimbursement. This company is the worst. I will be filling a complaint with the regulators and sending a letter to the BBB. read more

VERY pleased with my moving experience this weekend. The movers arrived right in their promised window and were incredibly efficient. I had 4 stops that included an annoying disassembly and reassembly of a bed (that apparently the movers were not aware of) but they didn't complain and did a fantastic job (the bed weighs a million pounds and was a storage bed, so pretty complicated). The only minor glitch was that I was charged more than I was quoted, due to company error, so that when it came to pay (in cash) at the end of the move...I had to scrounge for extra money to tip what I wanted. However, when I called this morning to tell them about the mistake they immediately apologized and began issuing a refund (which they graciously offered to do through PayPal- so it will be quick and easy for both parties). I would absolutely without a doubt recommend them to everyone and anyone- and if you have a piece of furniture you're unsure about taking apart, request SAM! He was the best. read more

I hired this company to move me December 1st. I automatically got a $50 discount for finding them through Yelp. Corey was friendly, understanding and helped me through the process since I've never hired movers before. He was nice enough to basically let me shop around and make sure I want to hire movers. All I had to do was finalize within two weeks. The key was starting early, so I contacted them in mid-November. I had to do a little confirming, but I'm naturally a worry wart. I always think things are going to fall through. Anyway, I received reassuring emails from Corey that I am still on the calendar. The movers showed up on the 1st on time right on schedule. They were really nice fellas and we got along well. They wrapped everything and disassembled stuff when needed. Granted, we were only moving heavy furniture. We had two apartments going into one apartment (girlfriend and I were moving in together). All in all, the job took exactly three hours as quoted. Nothing was damaged. Easy-peasy! read more

I moved from DC to Manhattan last summer. After searching the internet for a reasonably priced and well reviewed mover in DC, I went with District Relocators partially because the timing worked out as well (I had a very narrow window where it had to happen since I was overseas right before returning to DC and only had a few days before I had to vacate my apartment). While overseas I spoke with Linda via email and on the phone to make arrangements. It happened they had another client moving to New York at the same time so lucky for me, they offered a discount for us to have both of our stuff loaded together. Unbeknownst to me at the time, my new building in Manhattan didn't allow move-ins on Sundays and our originally planned delivery day was on a Sunday. I contacted Linda and she was willing to search for an alternative solution for me. In the end they didn't have another client going a day before or after so I agreed to pay $100 more to have my stuff stored with them so it could get delivered after the Sunday. It was still a great deal compared to what other companies had quoted me. The guys who came to pick up my stuff were on time, even a bit early. They were quick and efficient in getting everything out of the apartment. Upon delivery in Manhattan, they were efficient and professional as well. I just wish they would've given me one of their phone numbers so I could've kept in touch with them while they were on their way since there were so many factors related to traffic that could change their ETA. Just having Linda's phone and email wasn't very useful if it was outside business hours and she didn't seem like she was in constant touch with them. Fortunately I was working very close to home and could run back when they arrived. One minor thing they screwed up: they mistakenly dropped off two small bags of the other client's stuff at my apartment. I don't think they lost anything of mine but I had a small plastic stand that lost a few legs. Not a big deal. I waited for the other client to contact me through the company so I could return his or her bags but it never happened. It was my first time hiring movers and I would recommend them. read more

I was a little scared about some of the reviews on DR on here - particularly about the broken items. I prepared accordingly by boxing up my favorite breakables and such and taking them in my own car to my new apartment. However, I felt that Rome, Al, and Shemar, the three awesome movers that came, were very detailed and careful the entire time. They handed me my lampshades because they did not want to run the risk of ruining them which I thought was responsible of them. They were courteous and worked quickly and strategically. They were a little late but DR does give basically like a 30 minute definite window with the possibility of a full hour. I just wished the office would have called me to give me an update after the 1/2 hour so that I wouldn't have gotten anxious and called myself (my loading dock was only reserved for a set time and I was nervous we wouldn't finish on time). Now, the hiccup I had was that unfortunately I was moving for a newer building to an older one with smaller doorways and hallways so my couch just wouldn't fit but they tried their best (twice) and tried to help me resolve having a random couch in my possession without anywhere to put it - they went above an beyond ( a drive to local uhaul storage facility, and then another drive to another place to store it when uhaul didn't work out!). Because they finished as quickly as they did, they had the time with the 3 hour minimum and only went over a bit more due to the extra moving around so I didn't pay an arm and a leg over the estimate. Holley who was the office sales lady was helpful but I do think their online system could be much better for booking and outlining all of the items that you have - DR's system is very old school and not as detailed as other moving companies that I requested quotes from. They should update that - I think it would help their movers too (for example, they didn't know that I had clothes on hangers that I thought they would bring garment boxes for which is what has happened when I moved with other moving companies - but that's because I wrote it out in my quote request but I don't know if they share all of that with their movers). It worked out fine but that's because I don't have tons of stuff and had my own garment bags for the extra sensitive stuff (just not enough for all my stuff). Again, I think Shemar, Al, and Rome are valuable employees overall at DR and you should try to request them if you use the company. read more

Never want to talk to him again - if you make a complaint, he will just start attacking you and threaten to talk to a lawyer instead of peaceful/friendly negotiation. Five star move. 1 BR in-city move. They sent 4 guys who made quick work of the move. There's a 3 hour minimum but they completed everything in 90 minutes. Very impressive and happy to pay for 3 hours if they get it done smoothly in half the time. They had the deal with a lot of stairs, and did some great problem solving when the loading dock at the destination was occupied. Keith, Antwan, Jerome, and Duke were friendly and professional. I moved on May 3, 2015 and am so glad I went with these guys!! I made the mistake of waiting until the week of my move to book movers and no one was able to accommodate me at a good price except District Relocators. I was especially concerned about the amount of time it would take to move me considering my original building had no elevator, terrible parking (on street), and was on the second floor- but these guys had no problems!! They arrived on time, their truck fit perfectly in the spot I saved for parking, and they moved me out of my studio into my one bed apartment (5 miles away in Sunday Traffic) in 2 hours 20 minutes. Nothing was damaged, all my furniture was wrapped, bed and box spring mattresses were covered, and they even had time to reassemble my bed, move my long bookshelf around and gently handle my antique Loveseat. I would recommend them for any type of move: as I had a lot of furniture yet this wasn't a problem. Also, these three guys move at lightning speed so you will get the best bang for your buck! My District Relocator experience was top knotch from beginning to end. First, when I called I talked with Tony about my needs and he was clear about the price, very accessible (including giving me his cell) and not overly pushy since I wasn't ready to commit at the time of my first call. However, after I booked with them, I appreciated the detail of the confirmation process which seems like a lot but I prefer overcommunication. My crew consisted of Dwayne, Breon and Antoine and sadly I know I am missing someone but these guys were pros. To be clear my job was small but the fact that I lived on a 5 floor walkup was not ideal. Yet, they did what would of taken me hours in minutes and it was just effortlessly. Some may say why did you spend the money but listen it was hot, there is no elevator where I lived previously and for me it was money well spent. My expectations were exceeded on every front! I live alone, so moving is always a cause of stress and anxiety for me, but District Relocators made my life so easy this past move. I cannot stress how quick and efficient they are. I packed up an entire large one-bedroom and upon arriving (they called me when they were 30 min away), they loaded everything into the moving truck within 40 min. They wrapped furniture which was fragile and nothing was damaged in the move. They then got to the new place quickly and unloaded everything within an hour, while also asking my preferences for where I'd like furniture to be placed! Everything was smooth and hassle-free and I am so grateful for their service. Not to mention the total price which was literally 50% of what others quoted (I got quotes from ~10 places). This review is long overdue...I used District Relocators for my move at the end of July and they did a fantastic job. Corey, my contact, was really helpful and thoroughly covered everything that would be involved with my move. He also was patient with me when I kept calling back to make sure everything was set for my move. The 2 extra guys he brought on my moving day were both very pleasant and efficient. The only snag in this whole operation was on my side when my couch wouldn't make it past the front entryway of my new apartment! I applaud all 3 guys for their effort to attempt to get it through though the doorway and they hauled it off when it was clear it was a lost cause. I would definitely hire them again for any future moves, especially within DC. They know the area, they offer reasonable rates (I got $50 off because I had found them on Yelp), and they take care of your stuff...going above and beyond in most instances. read more

One of their competitors recommended District Relocators when they couldn't help me move on rather short notice, so I think that says a lot! I moved in September 2013, so I'm a little late in getting to this review, but I felt strongly that TJ, Derrick, and Chris be recognized for their hard work. They were professional, efficient, and made me feel very comfortable about handling some of the more delicate furniture items. I would definitely recommend and use them again! read more
