Never again. We needed a storage unit for three months for our daughter's college items. The price was fine, the area is decent. However, getting in touch with anyone in the actual building is impossible. I have called over 30 times in the less than nine weeks we have rented and never once has anyone answered the phone or called back. Then I reached out to the main CubeSmart number. They said they would have someone on site call me back. Well, three more calls to the 800 number and I still have not heard a thing. Just got a notification that, after paying $167.16 for the first two months, our payment for the next month has been raised to $208.82, a 25% increase. In addition, they do not adjust if you move early, so whether you use one day or 28 days of the month, the price is the same. I would suggest looking elsewhere. I would never use CubeSmart again. read more

If the metal around the door latch looks damaged and the latch looks bent, that is because the door was just pulled open. Thieves just pulled my unit's door open and stole my stuff. Insurance has been a joke. Don't put anything of value in this place. Would not recommend! read more

I am writing this letter to formally lodge a complaint against your establishment located at 175 R St NE Washington, DC 20002. I have been a loyal customer of Cube Smart for a considerable amount of time and have not had any previous issues with the services provided until recently. On May 12, 2023, I became the victim of a storage unit break-in, which has left me deeply upset and frustrated. As a current student at Howard University, I was in the process of clearing out my dorm room for the summer break and relied heavily on my storage unit. Upon discovering the break-in, I immediately sought assistance from the general manager, Desmond Macalino. However, I was met with a hostile and unhelpful response from him, which has left me feeling extremely disappointed. Mr. Macalino proceeded to interrogate me about my check-in times, and when I was unable to provide him with exact details, he raised his voice and repeatedly questioned me. This behavior was not only unprofessional but also made me feel like a suspect in the matter, which is deeply concerning. Furthermore, the break-in was made through the ceiling of my storage unit, which leads me to believe that it was an inside job. The fact that Mr. Macalino disclosed private information about the contents of neighboring units also raises concerns about the ethical practices at your establishment. I feel that the confidentiality of customer information was breached, and I am now left with the fear that my personal belongings are not safe at your facility. I have already begun to cooperate with the local police department and my insurance company to resolve the matter of theft, but I would like Cube Smart to take full responsibility for the breach of security at the facility. I also was told from cubesmart they would refund me for the last month paid for this inconvenience however two months have gone by and yet nothing.I no longer feel comfortable referring any students from Howard University or anyone in general to your company if this is how you conduct your business. I have recorded all conversations with the general manager for my records and am willing to disclose this information with my attorney if need be. I request that you please take immediate action and ensure that the security of your facility is improved to prevent any future incidents. I trust that Cube Smart values its customers and will take appropriate measures to rectify the situation. read more

The unit is clean, well-lit, climate controlled, and close by. But what really stands out is the customer service. I scheduled a move-in on a Saturday and didn't check what time the office closed, 5 pm. I showed up at 5:30 with a fully packed truck and friends in tow. Wynfred stayed late to show me the unit and let me check in anyway. He even gave me a discount on the first month and was super helpful with some maintenance issues the next day (also close to the end of his shift.) Do not put your storage at Cube Smart on 175 R Street NE, Washington, DC 20002. If you want to be ripped off, lied to by management, and have items missing from your storage unit, go ahead. The management team's service is deplorable. They are never at the store. The office hours say 9:30am to 6pm, but no one is ever at the store. I had to wait a whole hour before anyone showed up and that was only because I called the 800# multiple times. I haven't even started to talk about how management IN AN EMAIL said to me "you will pay the move out fee and disregard the upcoming monthly bill". When I get to the store to move my storage, they charge me for the whole month of June and my things were there for only 5 days. June 1st through the 5th. THEY MADE ME PAY FOR A LOCK TO BE REMOVED FROM MY UNIT AND THERE WAS NO FREAKIN LOCK ON MY UNIT! THEY ARE THE MOST UNORGANIZED, UNPROFESSIONAL, AND UNWORTHY BUSINESS OF YOUR MONEY, DO NOT SPEND YOUR TIME, MONEY, OR SWEAT WITH THIS ESTABLISHMENT! THERE ARE ITEMS MISSING FROM MY STORAGE UNIT! It is just a storage unit but as they go, this place is great! Easy to access, regular deals or discounts and i believe they even have a free truck when you move in. Price wise, they are the same as other units. Be sure to check your unit first before leaving the office. Some of them have beams going through them, etc, and they don't have a list of these. I stored my stuff at this location for around a year and was very pleased. Since I needed a place easy to walk to for access to my belongings, the location was great given how proximate it is to the noma station. Never saw anything that would make me concerned about security. the building was clean and well maintained. I was there through high and low temperatures and it's definitely climate controlled. The price considering the location was fair. And I never had any problems with the staff. If I needed storage again, I'd use this location again. read more

I shared a storage unit with my roommate back in early 2013 but then we emptied it. Due to recent life changes, my partner and I recently rented a unit here again (and after comparison shopping a few other storage units in farther areas). This CubeSmart is within a half-mile of my house. The store manager we've dealt with, Nicole, is professional and pleasant. She takes her time with explanations for phenomena that others might balk at (e.g. midway through our sign-up process, she was stopped multiple times by customers who wanted to know why the trash bins were closed and locked...Nicole generously explained the company policy, which is that trash encourages vermin, and CubeSmart exists for you to store your STUFF, not for you to throw out your TRASH, which sort of makes sense). Anyway, we've picked out an upper-story unit, but we visited a whole host of storage cubes, including in the basement, and I'm happy to report nothing smells weird, there's no rat-sightings, etc etc etc. So, for now, a 4. Illegal practices. Since 2011 I have been part of CubeSmart and within the last two years, I have had ongoing issues with the reporting of my payment as issued by my bank, poor service and ongoing rate increases. The facilities are dated (old, single dirty elevator) and the management team is inept. In February, I spent TWO hours on a Saturday sitting with the GM Danny Williams going through the details of monthly payments - what they charged/posted/when as the amounts/dates varied. When you drill down on the details, it became apparent that even he couldn't understand what was transpiring. It took two hours although I had the payment activity from both CubeSmart and my bank printed out line by line. Furthermore, Mr. Williams committed to actions and follow-up that never occurred and to this hour I'm having to spend the ​time to address billing issues that conflict with my banking statements. I don't trust them and am making immediate plans to exit this facility. Thank goodness for the new disruptor MakeSpace because like other folks, poor customer service opens the door for others to receive and respect your time/money. My frustration comes from lack of accountability, ongoing rate hikes, poor accounting practices and the difficulty in doing business. In today's technology world, there is no reason to deal with payment issues. It should be seamless and easy to understand what's transpiring. It's in D.C., a very nice part of D.C. You're going to pay extra for that. But it deserves to be in that neighborhood. It's as easy to find as anything is in D.C. I had my stuff in there for a little more than a year. The online payment system was a little difficult to figure out. I dealt with the employees when I moved in and when I moved out. And both times, I received friendly, helpful service. Climate controlled and bug free. The only complaint I had was that the loading bays aren't always open. When I was moving out, there was only one bay open and there was a another group moving in. There was some creative maneuvering that had to be done. read more

CubeSmart on 175 R St NE has excellent customer service. I reserved a unit online, they followed up with a phone call, I came in to see it, signed some papers and moved in the next day. The monthly rent seems reasonable, although I've never had storage before to compare it to. Oh and the hallways aren't too creepy as long as you get in and out, lol. All in all, i'm satisfied. Since renting a unit here in July, I could not be more thrilled with the quality of the storage facility and the level of service provided by the staff. I run a small online business on the side and needed a location to store excess inventory, as well as receive shipments of inventory via UPS and truck freight. The staff at Cubesmart are incredibly accommodating - I work a day job and they are willing to receive me shipments and allow me to pick them up at the end of the day - whether it is a small box or an entire pallet of goods. From the moment I rented a unit, they knew me on a first name basis and are always friendly when I am at the facility. They really go above and beyond and I couldn't do what I do without their assistance and service. They may not be the cheapest storage option in DC, but without question they are the best. read more

I've been using Cubesmart for over 3 months, and I have not had a single bad experience so far. The location is of utmost convenience for me given that I've been moving between Shaw, Columbia Heights and Chinatown. I have only had this unit for 6 months and the rent has already increased! I am already being charged a hefty amount for my 5 x15 and this rate hike (which they claim they notified me of) makes the amount ridiculous. The customer service rep I spoke to said it is the same thing ALL storage companies do but I know for a fact many wait at least a year before a rental hike and there are some that promise even later increases. He was absolutely no help and just said it was policy. I am now considering moving my items to a different location since I will need storage for at least another 6 to 8 months. This is terrible because it will cost me to move it again but that is better than staying with a place that never told me there would be rental hikes every 6 months! I am only giving this place a 2nd star because the place is clean and the initial manager, Danny, that helped me when I first rented the place was kind and quickly switched me to a larger unit when my second shipment came from overseas came in and exceeded the size of the unit I had rented the week before. read more

I was in a difficult situation in that I needed a storage space stat with no reservation during a period where seemingly every college student within 5 miles convereged to steak claim on a storage unit. Fortuantely, I met R. Waithe and he immideately put me at ease. First he cuold only get me a large unit, which I didn't need. When he saw my facial reaction he knew I needed another sized unit. Not just for their transparent pricing and great location (for me at least!), but because the management and staff are super friendly and helpful. I'd just like to say that this is my first experience with Cubesmart. I was crazy close to getting there at closing time on a Sunday. Called ahead to let them know. The rep at the time (Roman) was amazingly nice, calming, great with directions. But it gets even better. After a long day of packing up, who ever heard of actually having to get up on a ladder and store all your stuff up over your head!!!!????? HQ made no mention of this when I paid. I almost wanted to cry because as a woman, I didn't have the strength for all that. Roman stayed LATE and helped me even when he didn't have to. The people at this particular location are mad cool. ( I was sorry to see that he got transferred when I had to come back to get some things). I would just say to get the FULL info on location, height, positioning of your unit before you pay. Also, I'm waiting to hear back from this particular location because it says that the building is climate controlled but I was so hot in there for 30 minutes trying to get some stuff that it wasn't even funny (and yes, all the doors were closed so that no air could escape). I'm awaiting some kind of help with compensation for that because a couple of things I have in there, now cannot be used and have to be tossed due to heat. read more
