Was helping a friend move today and put some things in storage. When we got there I had some issues punching the code in so we went into the office. The lovely gentleman was very friendly and helped us get the right code and even escorted us to show us the unit. My friend didn't have a lock and the co-sharer of the unit wasn't going to be able to get to the storage unit today. Once, again the kind gentleman was willing to allow them to use his lock in the mean time. We were both so appreciative over all of the assistance. From what I could tell it seemed to be reasonably priced for two college students to able to afford a unit. Parking was ample and facilities looked clean. read more

I started renting a 5 x 7 unit for $75 per month. Four months after I moved things in, the price increased by $30. Three months after that the price increased again to $141 per month. I moved out after that but who knows how high it would've gotten. Beware of their pricing increases. read more

The manager, John Makolo, was very helpful when I was on premises, helping me even opening the hatch on a rental vehicle. Despite limited digital assets, he was able to get me my final statement of vacancy via email. He is the best thing (five stars) about the New York avenue facility (three stars), which is a bit tired. The elevators are an adventure and finally one of the two is no longer operative. This storage unit is not Climate Controlled as advertised. I recently went there to do inventory on my samples and the temp according to one of the female employees was over 100 degrees. The company was purchased by another company and now is not honoring there "climate controlled" contracts. I am in the process of looking for a new unit, hopefully my samples are fine and move immediately. The company never sent out a letter or email stating they were making such drastic changes. If you're looking for quality and care of your things, this is not the place for it. read more

Janice at U-Stor on New York Avenue was not only personable on the phone but in person I found her to be kind, helpful, and therapeutic! Worst experience of my life. I stored my stuff in one of the units for the last month. I was moving this weekend and so I went to the unit and started taking out my stuff. Everything in the unit was infested with giant roaches. I had to throw away a $200 rug, my box spring. They got into all of the boxes that had clothes in them. I spent $200 getting everything washed because I took all of mine and my girlfriend's clothes straight to the laundromat. We did not store any items (like food) that would attract roaches. I also saw roaches and other bugs going in and out of the other units nearby. read more

I needed to rent a truck for a recent move out of DC. I reserved a 10' truck online through the Budget Rental Car website and selected U-Store as my pickup location. When I arrived, the staff casually said that "I was lucky" because someone else was supposed to come by and pick up my truck that morning. They were totally ready to leave me hanging. I had also reserved a hand truck and they didn't have any on site, despite my reservation. read more

It's kind of weird to write a review about a self-storage place -- it seems so straightforward. Show up, put your stuff in a locker, carry on your merry way. But U-Store really stands out. I've had a space there for almost three years. I had to rent storage space because of a really upsetting and stressful situation. I was kind of a spazz emotionally and mentally. The staff could not have been more helpful and straight-up *kind*. I know -- not exactly the place you'd expect to find wonderful, salt-of-the earth folks, but there ya go. Janice gave me a bottle of water, and a warm and genuine pep talk that I really needed at that moment. They gave me a fantastic deal when I realized I needed a bigger space than I'd anticipated. Janice walked me through the whole process patiently and with no BS, no pressure, no hard sell. Over the years they've been *excellent* to deal with. When my credit card number changed and my automatic payment didn't go through, I inadvertently missed a month of rent. They could have penalized me heavily -- it's in the contract. I explained the situation to them and they were completely understanding and waived the fee. I just went back to the storage locker today for the first time in almost three years. John was super helpful; I'd lost my key to the lock and he and Donnie charged me a very reasonable fee to get the lock off and give me a new one. No hassle whatsoever. Oh, and another bottle of water! When I opened my locker, what blew me away was that my stuff was *totally* clean. I'd been expecting to find a layer of dust -- c'mon, three years! Nope. My stuff looked like it could have been put there yesterday!!!!! The whole facility is totally clean. Doilies to help you navigate, big elevators, clean space. If everywhere had this level of customer service and were run this well, the world would be a magical place. read more

I rented a unit at U-Store at a friend's suggestion, and I could not be happier with the experience and customer service. I moved to New York for a new job and needed a place to store my furniture, decorations, and seasonal clothing for about two months. It was simple to rent the unit, and the elevators made it easy to load my furniture into it. Making monthly payments was easy to do online, and when I called to make a second payment, the staff was friendly and efficient. When it came time to vacate the unit, I called to let the staff know. They made the change to my account immediately and let me know how crowded they expected the site to be on my moving day. I rented a truck through Budget online to pick up onsite at U-Store. They only have a few trucks, but Budget allows people to make reservations online even after a third-party distributor is sold out. U-Store staff called me to tell me that their trucks were overbooked for my moving day so that I would know to get there early. (If Budget has overbooked customers for their site, customers must go to another local Budget site to pick up a truck.) The whole experience was very pleasant and easy to arrange. I had to buy my own lock, but my belongings were safe, and I felt confident about that because of the key codes required to get into the fence and then into the facility. Nothing seems to have been damaged by mice or heat, and I haven't noticed an issue with mold or anything of that sort yet in unpacking. The location on New York Avenue is convenient to I-95, too, if you're planning to drive a big moving truck for a long distance (not having to go back on DC local roads was a pro.) I enjoyed working with U-Store and would choose them again in a snap. Before reserving a spot, you should make sure their access hours work for you (I believe they close at 7pm), and if you're booking a truck there, you should make sure that Budget hasn't overbooked them. read more

My experience is much like Clair K. I had reserved a storage unit that came with a moving truck, only to find out that morning of the move that the pave was not even open for business yet. I stopped at U-Store and Janice provided not just professional guidance, but empathy and the time to really listen to what i was going through at just the beginning of my move. Unfortunately, they did not have the size I needed on that day, so I had to go with another storage space, which I will review next with 1 star, and unbelievable treatment. So, mid-month, I went back to U-Store and they had what I needed. Janice gave me the remaining month with a $1 month special. I made my move-out/move-in one day too early, the day before my disability check gets deposited. The other storage place requires you to pay a full additional month if not out by your move out date. I was looking at $700.00 in storage fees. Realizing I could cancel the U-Store contact a day late, and understanding what I had gone through the past month, they allowed me to question. Janice, as well as John, are6truly a caring human beings. People that understand businesses are there for profit and jabber guidelines to run by. They also understand that certain guidelines or rules can be altered, allowing the business to show compassion and empathy to the community it serves. That is how longterm client-business relationships are made. U-Store develops long-term relationships, allowing them to gain long-term profits. The staff is awesome! I had to store some furniture and other assorted belongings for a couple of months during an apartment hunt. When I called in, Janice gave me a couple of quotes but suggested a little bit more space than I needed because there was a deal on it. When I went to the site, the man who showed me around did the same (shoot, forget his name), and made sure I didn't leave without a free bottle of water, either. I thought everything was pretty clean, if not super high-tech. There are a couple of dollies and elevators, and a code to get both in the elevator and in the parking lot. Each unit has to be locked with a padlock that you have to provide. The walls of the units don't reach to the top of the ceiling, at least that I saw. Eventually I found an apartment and didn't need the storage space anymore, so I went to collect my stuff. I hadn't given the right amount of notice to close the unit so was perfectly wiling to pay the next month, but Janice waived it without my asking. The staff just seems all-around good-natured and helpful. If I'm ever in need of storage in DC again, I know where I'm going. read more

Overall my experience with U-store was good. When we first arrived, someone from U-Store showed us to our unit, so we didn't have to try to find it ourselves. I felt that U-Store was safe because you have to enter a code to get in and out of the gate and the gate is only open from 7am-7pm. The one issue we did have was that the elevator was broken sometimes. In one case both elevators were broken so we have to carry furniture and other items down the stairs. I spoke with Janice about this and she compensated us for the inconvenience. read more

Janice, the manager at U-Store is phenomenal! She goes well beyond her duties to ensure customer satisfaction and security. U-store was able to get me a small storage space the day of my move. Janice was kind enough to stay a bit later (with manager approval). She was also able to help me further secure my items later on. Also, it is a great option for Gally students bc it is just a couple of streets down. The only down side is that you have to be very aware of the dates that you need to pay bc late fees do add up (as do other storage facilities). I will definetly use U-Store in the future. read more

I had to downsize from a big house to small apartment and used two large unit there to store stuff. I retained one unit for well over a year. My experience was excellent. My stuff was dry and clean. I never had problem getting access. I did forget the code a couple of times and they kindly reminded me. There's a staff person there named Janis who is a real class act. I've been storing some of my belongings at U-Store for over a year and a half. After a year and a half I'd would've expected a layer of dust but to my surprise there wasn't none to be found. The whole place is kept clean. The customer service is excellent. Ms. Janice patiently talked with me about the paperwork, while John showed us the storage unit. The employees make sure that you are taken care of. They make sure to build positive rapport with each customer that comes in the door and leaves with a smile. The storage spaces come in a range of sizes and all are very reasonably priced. Additionally, students can pay a discounted rate for the entire duration of the summer up front. Registering was not a complicated process. Once you've told them the size of the space you'd like, they show it to you in person before you sign the lease. Also, the manager, Janis Wilson, explains all of the important policies to renters before they sign the lease, so that no is uncertain about what they're getting out of the bargain. She is very personable, knowledgeable, and sincere. Moving out also was very simple: just notify the manager in writing at least 10 days before the end of the month when you'd like to terminate the lease. You don't need to go into the office to sign any other paperwork when moving your belongings out (unless, perhaps, you violated the terms of the lease, broke something, etc.). The facility itself is clean, and it has policies to ensure that renters do not use their spaces for purposes that would have dangerous, unhealthy, or generally messy side-effects. The staff take good care of the facility to prevent leaks and rodent infestations. The only potential caveat is that the facility is not technically climate controlled. I don't actually know how hot or cold it gets inside the facility during the summer and winter. When I moved in and moved out in May and August, it was very hot outside, but not nearly as warm inside the facility, so at least the highest internal temperature probably isn't too bad. The only items I stored that could have been adversely affected by heat and humidity were some cheap paperback books and a desktop computer, and those came out fine. (The building might just have good insulation, even if it doesn't use industrial air conditioning). Particularly if you're a student storing things for just one or two seasons, the lack of climate control should not be an issue at all. If you need long-term storage, the majority of objects that a person would store probably don't need climate control either, but if you have something particularly temperamental about temperature, you'd probably want to store that elsewhere. All in all, this is a very cost-effective, efficient, safe, straightforward, honest operation, and they are a pleasure to do business with. If I need to store my belongings next summer, I'll definitely go to them. read more

John and Janis are two of the nicest and most helpful people I've encountered. The storage facilities are clean,well-lit and secure, and the whole building itself is password protected, so I knew my stuff was safe. I also had the easiest close of an account ever. Other storage facilities were going to charge me for two full months for a smaller unit with a much less convenient to access set-up.
