TLDR: Distant Relatives brings a thoughtful, African-influenced twist to barbecue with smooth service and steady meats, but it doesn't quite justify a special trip. Overview: Set in an East Austin food park next to a brewery, Distant Relatives is Chef Damien Brockway's "modern African American" smoke shack. The spot has earned praise over the years, landing as a part of Texas Monthly's Top 50 BBQ Joints in 2021 and receiving an honorable mention in 2025. I arrived right at opening on a Wednesday and breezed through ordering. The staff were friendly, the process was straightforward, and seating was plentiful. Parking is shared with the brewery and was easy at that hour. Food: The brisket showed solid fundamentals: noticeable smoke, clean beefiness, and a reasonable salt-and-pepper profile. The texture was tender but not especially lush, and the smoked mustard butter added novelty more than depth. The pork spare ribs were the better bite of the day, with a touch of extra spice in the rub. They were cooked well, coming off the bone with minimal tug, and stayed juicy and flavorful. The chicken leg quarter was moist throughout with balanced seasoning; the chili butter tasted mostly of straight chili heat without much savory backbone. The sides were the letdown. The marinated cabbage eats like a spicy slaw with real kick; heat lovers may enjoy it, but it can overwhelm a plate. The smoked and roasted peanuts are mostly roasted peanuts with a dusting of house spice, light on aroma and complexity for the price. The bread, apparently a toasted Pullman sourdough according to articles online, was a miss: below-average buttered toast that felt out of place. A small win came from the sweet onions on the plate, which appeared yassa-adjacent, both sweet and bright and dotted with what looked like mustard seeds. The value is mixed: meat pricing sits around the average for Austin, with brisket at $36/lb and spare ribs at $30/lb. Here, the pricing felt justified given the quality. On the other hand, the sides, coming in at $7 per 8 oz, felt steep for what you get. Final Thoughts: There's thoughtful intent and a pleasant setup for hanging out with a beer, and the meats are competently executed. On this visit, though, the food didn't deliver the distinctive character suggested by the concept and accolades. If you're already in the area, it's a solid stop for a twist on Texas barbecue; if you're planning a barbecue trek across town, there are stronger options ahead in the queue.

Brisket was *chef's kiss* The Cole slaw was kinda spicy, in the best way. And the sauce was so uniquely tasty! Kind of buttery/spicy/garlicy...can't really pinpoint but it was really good! This is one of the food trucks at Meanwhile Brewing, be prepared for a bit of a wait but it's worth it. Grab a beer and kick back on the lawn and listen to live music while you wait. You're welcome.

No laurels here! Just a 2x Michelin winner holding up their good name and carrying the gospel of great BBQ to the Meanwhile Brewing park. Head Chef/Owner Damian has been serving for 20 years, pouring all that home-grown love into cooking that tastes like dad's (but better) starting with the most proper buttery Brisket (sample by the 1/4 lb) and rich peppered BBQ sauce. Recommended: the Pork Tomahawk topped in slender onions and a savory mustard sauce: smoky, peppery, porky goodness! The smoked chicken leg is also impossibly moist, made extra special with a side of mustard sauce. If you like spicy pickles, their Pickled Cabbage covers veggies, reminding of a chilled spicy kraut - slow burn on the back-end. All that with some roasted peanuts and a smile! Meanwhile, they do have a stellar craft brew, NA, and coffee program to keep you watered down in warmer weather or as temperatures drop - seating is plentiful and events abounding!

Ribs + a side of black eyed peas w/burnt ends

Super unique bbq spot, taking African culture inspired flavors and putting them into every dish! I got the spare ribs and the black eyed peas+pork burnt ends. The dry rub on the spare ribs was unlike any rub I have had (spicy, but such a depth of flavor), and the meat was super juicy and Smokey. The black eyed peas were a tender flavor bomb, loaded with burnt ends which added a nice porky dimension to the dish. So Glad I got to try this spot.

Was surprised when I heard that Distant Relatives was named best brisket in town. IMHO Barb's BBQ in Lockhart is the best in Central Texas. So I had to try Distant out. Bottom line? The brisket was AMAZING (and right up there with Barbs). The seasoning on the bark was WOW ). The chicken leg was ok (and surprisingly small IMO). Distant Relatives is in one of the best food parks in Austin. Would definitely recommend for any and all brisket lovers.

Wow is Distant Relatives good! I've been waiting a long time to eat here and I'm glad I finally got the opportunity. The brisket sandwich was 10/10. Great portion size and loved the slaw that came with it too. The folks who work in the food truck are fun to chat with as they enjoy their job. Good work!

Great BBQ and service here. Food comes out quick and their food is packed with flavor. Good pricing for side items, portion size is great and the guys here are always friendly. 10/10

Black eyed peas were the best part!

We saw Distant Relatives on Somebody Feed Phil and thought the food, especially the sides, looked amazing. Phil had pickled golden beets and roasted radishes. I LOVE both of those veggies, so I was pumped to go! I get that sides are seasonal, and unfortunately, those items were not on the menu when we visited. The friend that we met up with had been here before, but had not eaten at this food truck. It's housed in a really cool space adjacent to a large brewery. The outdoor area is fantastic! SO many benches, beautiful trees, lots of shade, play areas for kids, and a few stages. My friend said they have live music often and she loves hanging out there. She ordered a brisket sandwich, and we ordered chicken (bummed they didn't have turkey), brisket, spare ribs, pickled okra, and their black eyed peas with burnt ends. She said her sandwich was fine, and she didn't seem wowed. Our food? Honestly, forgettable. We maybe ate 1/2 of all the food we got. I did LOVE the black eyed peas with burnt ends and ended up mainly eating that. I don't know if this was an off day? Maybe if they had the sides I was hoping for, would I have liked them more? The meat was just whatever, certainly didn't blow our minds, and the was our least favorite meal we had in Austin. I couldn't even tell you how it tasted the next day, let alone three weeks later. Cool place to hang out, but not great BBQ in my opinion.

    Brisket and Peanuts

Came here for lunch on a Saturday afternoon. Had essentially no wait time and my food was ready pretty soon after ordering. Only one meat (I think pulled pork?) and two of the four sides were sold out by the time I ordered around 1230. I went for the brisket with a side of spicy peanuts and thought they were both great! The brisket itself was cooked nicely, had a good mix of lean and fat. Solid amount of smoke on the bark. Compared to the other meats this was very traditional, but the spicy mustard it was served with was a little different and really tasty. Excited to come back and try some of the less Texas traditional meat offerings they have The peanuts were just as fantastic as I was hoping for. The spice isn't too heavy, but definitely builds as you eat more. I could see this not working as a standalone side for some, but if you like your spice and peanuts, this is a must try. Overall they definitely lived up to the hype and I'm sure I'll be back here to try more of the menu!

    Chicken and chili

This food truck is located inside the Meanwhile Brewery. I got the chili chicken leg and my husband got the pork ribs. We also got the spicy peanuts and the black eyed peas. I really liked my chicken and the black eyed peas were delicious. My husband thought his ribs were good and bit dry. The spicy peanuts are not worth the price. Food was delicious but don't expect much. Tiny pieces not much food. That's probably why they give you a huge piece of toast to fill you up !

    Ribs brisket sando and chicken
    Mallory W.

Came here during my 3 hour layover in Austin per my cousin suggestion. I had the sampler plate that had the chicken, ribs, brisket sandwich. Everything was pretty good a bit salty. My favorite things were the sando I loved the slaw on it and surprisingly the chicken. I'm not a huge fan of BBQ chicken but it was still moist wasn't dry and very flavorful. Service was good he was patient with me and suggested the sampler (that wasnt on the menu) so that I can try everything!! I apperciate that. This was located I believe in a beer garden because there was a brewery in the same spot as it. It was a hot day out yet still beautiful day to have some BBQ and a cold brew.

As a recipient of the prestigious Texas Monthly Top 100 BBQ Award, the expectations were high--and for the most part, they were met. The venue itself provides a fantastic, relaxed vibe, complete with plenty of TVs and a music stage, making it the perfect spot for chilling out on a lazy afternoon or settling in for an evening hang. The Main Event: Pitmaster Excellence The true test of a Texas BBQ joint is the holy trinity, and here, they nailed the fundamentals: * Brisket: This was Texas BBQ as it should be. The brisket was super juicy, delivered a profound, deep flavor, and possessed a flawless, great bark that spoke to hours of skillful smoking * Spare Ribs: A study in contrast and texture. The ribs offered a satisfying "good pull"--firm enough to bite but still falling cleanly off the bone. The thick, peppery bark was beautifully balanced by a slight sweetness from a pepper jelly glaze, adding a layer of sophisticated flavor you don't always find. * Pork Belly Burnt Ends: These were pure decadence. Each bite provided a delicious, melt-in-your-mouth experience with a distinct and welcome hint of Fierce Whiskers bourbon woven into the smoky, fatty flavor. They are so rich and irresistible, you know you shouldn't eat too many, but good luck stopping. * Jalapeño and Cheese Sausage: This locally sourced link brought the heat with a good level of spice. The flavor was excellent, though the texture leaned slightly toward the processed side, which was the only minor drawback among the meats. The Supporting Cast: Sides A great plate of BBQ requires sides that stand up to the meat, and while two of these were stars, one needs a little work. * Mac & Cheese: An absolute winner. It was cheesy, creamy, and featured an excellent smoked flavor that permeated the dish. The slightly charred edges added a delightful textural counterpoint. * Hash Brown Casserole: This was a surprisingly strong contender, offering a nice assembly of savory flavors. The secret weapon was the corn flake topping, providing an unexpected but welcome crunch, complemented by a satisfying hint of bacon. * Creamed Corn: Unfortunately, this side was the weakest link. It tasted primarily bland, despite a slight peppery note. It desperately needs some fresh jalapeños mixed in to cut through the creaminess and add the essential Texas kick. Final Verdict The meat selection here is truly Top 100 worthy, excelling in technique, flavor, and execution (especially the Brisket and Burnt Ends). The atmosphere is perfect for a relaxed gathering. While the Creamed Corn missed the mark, the stellar Hash Brown Casserole and Smoked Mac & Cheese prove that their side game is usually strong. Come for the high-quality, authentic Texas barbecue, stay for the great outdoor patio.

This spot was close to my hotel, and on my departure day, I decided to have one last hit of Q. It's a big restaurant, and it appears to also be quite the music venue. When I went, a little on the early side for a Friday dinner, there was not a wait and I was sat immediately. My server was attentive, and got me in, fed, and back out in plenty of time to catch my already delayed flight. I ordered their 3 meat combo plate, which also came with two sides, and added on a piece of cornbread. I chose brisket of course, as well as turkey and sausage. The server recommended the serrano pepper spinach (like a creamed spinach) and onion rings, and I took those recs. The best of the three meats was the turkey. Not a good sign. It was moist and tender, though not particularly smokey. Even so, I enjoyed it more than the brisket and sausage, which I would have guessed the reverse when ordering. The brisket was on the dry side and kind of bland, it did not smack of being freshly carved. The Stubbs BBQ sauce helped me eat some of it... now I see why they are famous for their sauce. I had a couple bites of the sausage and pushed it aside, I didn't enjoy their recipe on that at all. It was cooked seemingly well, but the blend of spices and meat they use wasn't pleasant to me. The sides, the onion rings were very crispy which I like, but again... something in the batter. Maybe even the oil they were cooked in, I did not enjoy as much. The spinach was actually quite enjoyable, maybe even a little rich. I think if it were warmer, if might help milden out some of that. It was really thick. The cornbread wasn't worth the add-on. No sweetness or anything to make it memorable. Vessel for butter. The portion was massive, and I had leftover food, but did not take it... and that would have been the case even if I wasn't headed to the airport. I wouldn't recommend this spot.

When I tell you these ribs were a religious experience I am not embellishing. Full disclosure: I do not currently live in the south so I don't consider myself a BBQ connoisseur, but I did spend 4 years in the south and have sampled many BBQ joints in the meantime. Take this review as someone who really enjoys BBQ (and any slow cooked meat for that matter) but who could not list more than 10 BBQ restaurants they have eaten at in the last 5 years. So the beef ribs. Great texture, tender meat but still had a bite to it. Expertly seasoned so they were not wet with sauce but still moist. I would consider 1 beef rib a snack, 2 a small meal. I also tried the chopped brisket (brisket and burnt ends sitting in a soup of BBQ sauce). That was also delicious (and more reasonably priced), but I could have done with slightly less sauce. It really was like a soup and while the sauce was tasty, there was too much of it. I went later in the afternoon (around 2/2:30pm) and got their last two beef ribs so going earlier is better. You order at the open kitchen and then pay at the counter when your food is ready. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, you can take your food and sit at any of their tables of which they have many (this place is pretty big). I do not normally like barbecue sauce but Franklins is great. The spicy one was perfect. Overall, I thought waiting an hour was great. With the food we were able to get I understood why people wait hours. I recommend bringing a water for the wait and comfortable shoes while you wait in line.

So I finally decided to go try Franklins and brave the line. I arrived on a weekday at 1130am and…read morethe line was not bad. Maybe an hour. I love how people are giving this place a 1 star because they are popular and the line is long sometimes, I mean come one so stupid. This place is small and it's amazing how they can crank out as much bbq as they do. It's impressive. I got almost to the front of the line around 1230pm and they were already almost out of ribs, so go early. I got a 1/2lb of Brisket, 1/4lb of turkey, 3 bones of ribs, and one link of the jalapeño cheddar sausage, my side I did was potato salad. I'll give my honest review down below on each item. Brisket- 1000/10, best I have ever had. It was well seasoned, juicy, smoky, fatty in the right way and just so tender and delicious. Spectacular. Turkey- another 1000/10, it's so juicy and and tender. They season it but not heavily which is great since Turkey is a mild tasting meat. I would definitely get this again! Ribs- 6/10, and I love ribs. To me the seasoning on these was so thick it just overpowered the taste of the pork. All I could taste was pepper on it. It was good but I would personally pass on this item next time. Sausage- 1000/10, again so good. It was spicy due to the jalapeños but not overly, the cheese was nice and there was a good snap to the casing. The smoke added a nice touch to the fattiness of the sausage. Potato salad- 3/10, to me this was not a good take on potato salad. Not much texture in it like celery or something like that and all I could taste was vinegar. I like acid in my food but this is all I could taste. So it wasn't for me. Overall when I go next time I will be loading up on brisket, turkey and sausage! These items are amazing, maybe try another side, their beans looked really good. GO OUT AND EAT SOME BBQ!!

This order was delivered to us for a catering event. The ordering process was smooth and efficient…read morewhile also being delivered at the scheduled time. For fifteen people, the total cost was $425.69. This included delivery costs and taxes, but no tip. It consisted of three meats, two sides, and a dessert along with pickles, onions, bread, and BBQ sauce. There was also a set of utensils delivered, but plates were forgotten, but not a big deal. Brisket - This was definitely the best item eaten of the day. It was tender and juicy while adding the BBQ sauce giving that extra bite. The BBQ sauce was great regardless, a little bit of sweet and smoky flavor going on. Pulled Pork - This was another solid meat choice. I did not think it was as tender as the brisket, but it was still enjoyable especially with that BBQ sauce, which was key throughout the meal. Sausage - This was not bad. The snap on this threw me off a little, but it was not too bad. They were large links and had plenty of flavor. Gouda Mac & Cheese with Smoked Bacon - This was actually penne pasta with little pieces of the bacon. I actually preferred this pasta choice here. It really soaked up the cheese sauce. The sauce was not too over powerful and was just right. Beans with Smoked Bacon - These were not too bad. I thought they were a little liquidity, but the added bacon pieces definitely helped. Banana Pudding - This came in individual cups, which was nice. The pudding was thick with a little meringue or whipped cream present and a few wafer cookies on top. It was a satisfying ending to a very good meal. Will I go back? Yes.
