Last weekend I made a long-anticipated visit to distant relatives. I had an afternoon to kill and decided to stop by in the early afternoon. The line was small and manageable. Unfortunate, by the time I came by, they were sold out of the brisket, but I was pumped up to try the ribs. The blacked eyed peas also looked great. The food trailer is set up at the beautiful Meanwhile Brewing. They had plenty of brews to compliment the smoky offerings from Distant Relatives. On to the food and the reason for 4 stars. Everything that came out was very well-executed, technically. The ribs had a nice level of smoke and toothsomeness. The spicy rub had a nice kick. I also really enjoyed the BBQ sauce. The black eyed peas were a little bit of a letdown. They were fine, but unspectacular. I think they would have benefited from a little more smoke/porkiness and a nice zippy hot pepper vinegar sauce. The peanuts were a perfect bar snack, quite spicy but I struggled to find the smoke I was anticipating. Aside from having the most interesting name in town, Distant Relatives also happens to be one of the absolute best barbecue spots. Located at Meanwhile Brewing, I quite like the element of surprise that comes with a playful, everchanging bbq menu. No matter what you order--whether it's succulent brisket, St. Louis ribs, beef shoulder, pickled okra, or the fruits of an exciting, rare, and insanely delicious Haitian food collab (shout out Chef Paul Toussaint!)--you won't be disappointed. We went Friday around 6ish. There's ample parking at the tire shop next door that lets you park there after they close. They have picnic tables, but not enough shade. We were so hot. We ended up packing our stuff and taking it to-go. It's BYOB, so eating there was the original plan. Take this to-go unless it's a nice chilly day. Everything on the menu is worth trying. All the veggie sides were delicious. I loved the cabbage side the best. The smoked peanuts are a great snack too. If I had to choose, the chicken was my favorite. I came here around 4 and the dirty rice was not available anymore. Just the peanuts. The bbq meats were still available so I ordered a pound of the beef brisket which was good, especially with the sauce that accompanies it. The beef brisket sandwich with the cabbage was really good and flavorful. They toasted the bun - so important. I also liked that they provide buttered white bread slices with the brisket, I asked for 2 more for a total of 3 with the 1 pound of brisket. I think that's fair, or maybe 1 slice per half pound? Woman was really helpful in helping us figure out how much to order. Distant Relatives is a food truck behind Meanwhile Brewing, and a great place to grab lunch -- as long as you're not in a rush. Virtually empty on a recent Wednesday afternoon, we waited for close to 15 minutes for a small tray of BBQ (which ostensibly was already cooked long before we got there). It's arguably worth the wait, and as many folks say, the sides are what you'll remember, especially the black eyed peas with burnt ends, one of my favorite BBQ sides I've ever had to date. Pickled cauliflower is a nice change from Del Dixie pickles, and the toasted bread is better than Mrs. Baird's. What about that brisket. Looks great in the picture, but underneath that bread I discovered the fattiest hunks of meat I've ever seen in BBQdom. Like "eat around the fat" veins of inedible yellow gristle that really shouldn't have been served. Sure, the meat around the fat was fine -- and I feel the restaurant gave us extra meat over our 1/2 pound order in order to compensate -- but it was still a low spot on an otherwise solid meal. Food: 4.5 stars I've tried quite a few things on their menu-- all of their meat is always so tender and well seasoned. My only complaint is that they sell out of their sweet potatoes and sausage every time I go! Really good bbq for a decent price. I just didn't rate this higher because it's not exactly something I would drive an hour for and it's not the most life changing BBQ I've ever had, but it's still really good. Service: 4 Really nice staff. They don't go above and beyond, but they do have a nice baseline. Ambiance: 4 stars Meanwhile brewing is a great venue- large outdoor area, live music, cute dogs, great beer selection, good vibes. It's nice, but in Texas, the heat and allergies can get kind of insufferable if you're a weenie hut jr. baby like I am. It's by no means their fault, but it's something to keep in mind. Once my fiancé and I realized we were going to be moving out of Austin, trying as many of the top BBQ joints around became a major priority. We stopped by Distant Relatives which is located in a food truck park attached to an awesome brewery. There was no line and we were quickly served. To start this food stand is located inside the courtyard of a brewery that I feel is a bit hidden from the most popular areas in Austin but it has more food trucks around so the options are enough for someone looking to have a good time and with enough space to enjoy the outdoors, although the place is spacious the parking lot is usually full but there is enough space on the street to park, I was curious to try their spicy smoked peanuts which in my opinion was something regular but a good option as a snack to accompany some drinks, the brisket and pulled pork sandwich impressed me, something different in terms of its dressings but a delicious combination, the meat very soft and juicy and the side of Burnt End's & Black Eyed Peas surprised me. Great BBQ, even for those who don't eat beef/pork! My HS friend visited Austin for the first time and mentioned to me he couldn't have beef or pork for health reasons. I was determined to make sure he had some BBQ during his visit and my first thought was the chicken leg quarters. I took him to DR as soon as he arrived. The food was amazing. Because of his health limitations, our order was a bit smaller than previous: chicken leg quarters for him (mostly), a slice of brisket for me, a a collard greens-side to share. The chicken leg quarters were still my favorite: smoky, juicy, with a nice crispy skin due to its use of chile vinegar butter--a mop sauce used by enslaved pitmasters. The brisket was excellent too, smoky and succulent from the mustard butter. I still can't say enough great things about the decision to use the Pullman sourdough bread; minor details like this set DR apart. I didn't love the shrimp in the collards due to childhood gastronomic trauma with shrimp, but my friend ate it up. Just as importantly, the service was terrific. After I mentioned my friend's dietary limitations, the kitchen decided to give us extra chicken and brisket as well as small samples of sides that my friend could eat. Both of us appreciated this incredibly gesture on DR's part and will not forget it. 4 & 1/2. the hype is legitimate. Now while I still find it difficult to except a food truck posted up in the yard of a brewery to be counted as one of the "Ten Best New Restaurants in the County" as Eater just declared of this operation at the end 2021, I must admit I was pretty damn impressed with the offerings here. I would have thought it pretty tough to actually come up with a entirely new and fresh perspective on BBQ in this town at this point but these folks managed to pull it off. As you've probably already read if you are reading this, this place is shifting the focus away from the Czech, German, and other assorted white Texan influences on Texas bbq and onto the African American/Diaspora ones, to appropriately delicious and illuminating effect. The bbq itself is as good as any I've had in Texas, although If I had only tasted the melt in your mouth brisket and smokey puled pork, I wouldn't have necessarily picked up on anything radically different or divergent from tradition. The same couldn't be said of the chicken, definitely the dark horse stunner of the meats. While usually a dried out and or gummy and joyless afterthought, this bird was somehow incredibly flavorful, with perfectly crispy skin and impossibly moist meat. Whatever secret magic preparation they did was sure something. If the chicken is on the menu order it, and double the amount that you are thinking of ordering. It's really the sides, as well as the sauces accompanying the meats (a bold move in Texas, where sauces of any kind in a bbq context are frowned upon) that the concept comes into delicious focus. The various sauces showcase the heat and peanut based flavors familiar to anyone who has sampled African cuisines. The sides like black eyed peas and slow cooked greens and yams, and a pickled beet salad draw from centuries of African American cooking. They flavor combinations brilliantly exemplified the soulful cuisine and the passion of the proprietors for it. I was disappointed that they weren't serving a much hyped side of Lime Beans cooked in pork fat, but I'll have to. The brewery locations outdoor space is massive enough that I (probably foolishly) felt it relatively covid safe even during the early prime of the Omicron variant. It was also super family friendly with a number of different playgrounds and trees for the little ones to play and swing on/from while the parents merrily booze together. Whether you find this a positive or nauseating negative, is completely subjective and probably subject to change even over the course of a night. The beer is ok, I'd say maybe slightly better than the ATX average, which I find to be a fairly lackluster beer town. Surely good enough though to drink alongside the delicious and innovative BBQ here. A definite must on any current Austin Q' tour. read more

The best BBQ we have had in Austin! When Dough Boys pizza moved from Arbor Food Park to Meanwhile Brewery, we started making the drive out there for pizza. The best pizza in ATX. As Dough Boys is so delicious it took nearly a year before we gave Distant Relatives a try. Wow -- everything on the menu at Distant Relatives is excellent. Both of these were food items that I haven't had much exposure to in the past, so I was excited to try! The black-eyed peas were tender yet firm, and the burnt ends helped to add a savory richness to the stew. I think there could have been a little more smokiness, and while the garnish of scallions was nice, I think the stew could have used a dash of vinegar-based hot sauce as well to cut through the richness. Fantastic new BBQ truck offering stellar smoked meats with innovative sauces and sides at a beautiful, family-friendly venue. We ordered an assortment of meats by the pound. Beautiful, tender, smoked brisket served with a butter mustard sauce was a pairing that puzzled me at first, then quickly won me over. Expertly executed pulled pork was moist, creamy, and served with a tamarind molasses sauce that had a fabulous earthy tang and would win the hearts of any self-respecting Kansas City boy or girl. The smoked chicken thigh with chili-vinegar sauce was impossibly juicy and I loved the hit of sour heat. Finally, the Memphis style, dry spice-encrusted pork spare ribs were crisp, tender, and needed no sauce. That said, lemme tell ya...that tamarind molasses sauce was tasting reeeeeeeal good drizzled onto that rib. Sides were similarly creative and ingenious. The black-eyed peas with burnt ends will make you forget all about the typical bowl of pinto beans. My favorite side, however, was the macerated watermelon salad lightly drizzled with a creamy chile sauce. I've always strongly believed that the best companion for a tray of smoky meats is a tart, fruit-based side. I mean, who the hell wants a heavy mouthful of gooey Mac and Cheese while eating BBQ?! That watermelon salad was perfection incorporated, providing enough acidic sweetness to cut through the BBQ's richness. Situated in the outdoor beer garden behind Meanwhile Brewing Company, there are abundant picnic tables and Adirondack chairs, a playground and soccer field, and (obviously) a stellar selection of craft brews. Plenty of free parking available in the lot and surrounding streets. All in all, the perfect setting for enjoying perfect BBQ. Yesterday we went to Distant Relatives for dinner. I've been following them for a while, and while these things get hyped in the bbq community, I was still incredibly excited to try it out. I wasn't expecting to do this, so the pictures aren't great. Between the hype and their IG presence, Distant Relatives promised a lot. They exceeded my wildest dreams in every element of that promise. I almost cannot describe how impossibly good their food (and service!) was. Simply, I'd consider this approach haute cuisine, their take on African diasporic flavor a revelation. These flavors are powerful yet refined, unique but comfortable. I'm incredibly inspired by this experience to really pursue this genre of culinary achievement more closely and work to elevate it into the mainstream. What distant relatives as done here is an achievement. We went at about 6:30p on a Saturday. It was pretty empty, perhaps due to the location. Upon arrival, I mentioned how excited I was and that seemed to make them excited to treat us! We ordered the ribs, brisket, pickles, and all four sides. Boy did they ever deliver. -Ribs: Absolutely succulent, a flavor explosion, but not in a an over the top, trying too hard sort of way. Refined, unique, and really possibly the best pork ribs I have ever eaten. I don't love pork ribs, but these delicious, confidently spiced, maturely approached diasporic culinary masterpieces are worth a trip across town any day morning, noon, or night! Brisket: excellent bark, great texture, an OG brisket with unique flavor. In the brisket capital of Texas, this is among the best I've eaten. It's rare to take a genre specific approach to a classic and not have it be...corny? But theirs stands tall among the all time central Texas greats. The hint of coriander and spice were utterly perfectly balanced to give a hint of the new while remaining a masterfully achieved classic. It would make Tootsie proud! The sides!! Nebbe Salad: Stunning. Black eyed peas, tomato, cucumber, and god knows what incredible spicy yet creamy Senegalese flavors were mixed in. This was an outstanding compliment to every meat, and something Id eat stand alone for lunch any day. Truly unique in flavor, they don't shy away from elevating African diaspora flavors to a level competitive with any of the flavor profiles money can buy. The Nebbe Salad takes it to James Beard levels. Potato Salad: herbaceous, creamy, spicy yet refreshing. I'm not a potato salad guy, but I'd eat this all day long. An absolutely inspired update on a sad backyard potluck dish. Who would think of potato salad as haute cuisine? Distant relatives, apparently! Mango Slaw: simple in its approach, there just isn't too much to add other than it's better than everyone else's coleslaw. Red Beans: I wish we could have had this at my wedding. My wife could not stop closing here eyes and just taking a moment to process how good these beans were. Out of this world. I'm tired of overly sweet, heavy bbq beans. This beans were bold, and also have burnt ends, but felt refreshing and almost light! Incredible. Pickles: I love pickles, but even these carrots, garlic, cauliflower etc were divine. Sour, yet a hair sweet, bright, but not overpowering. A delightful pivot from your run of the mill butter/dill chips. Sauces: I would get IV transfusions of their sauces. The bbq sauce has tamarind and molasses. If they wanted to changed their name to Bold yet Refined, this accoutrement was no exception. The vinegar sauce was out of this world. Butter? Vinegar. Garlic? What was that herby glory ringing through, Basil? I would drink this. I would baptize a child in this. In a nutshell, I'm about to become their biggest fan club. This food trailer is popular, expect to wait in line on the weekend 20-25 minutes at noon. Once the order went in, it took about 30ish minutes to get our order. Also, it is best to get in line as soon as you arrive at Meanwhile Brewery, because they run out of chicken and brisket. I learned that on my last visit to this brewery. I had the beef brisket. It comes with lightly toasted bread and pickled carrot garnish. I wanted a side of pickled carrots, but they were sold out. They are super good, and complement the rich brisket. The brisket was not overly smokey, and is so tender and moist. The 1/2 lb. comes with a delicious browned butter mustard sauce, but I prefer their BBQ sauce. My son and his brother girlfriend love the chicken leg quarters. I'll try that next time. read more

So many Bbq places to choose from but we chose distant relatives because it was on our way from the Austin airport to Johnson City. We had the brisket plate, brisket sandwich, pulled pork sandwich, and potato salad. The potato salad wasn't what I was expecting because it was baby potatoes, mushrooms in butter but it was a favorite at our table! We all shared in the food which was together on a tray. The carrots had some sort of interesting seasoning and there was a sauce that you could dip anything into that was fantastic. So many great flavor combinations on this tray but the underlying Brisket and pork done well it doesn't hurt that there's a brewery with excellent beers and picnic tables under the trees that everyone enjoyed. Such a unique flavor on the bbq. I had the pulled pork sandwich and it did not disappoint. The meat was moist and flavorful the slaw had a bit of a bite but the two created a great bite. You know when the food looks too delicious that you forget to take a pic? Well that is exactly what happened here! I visit Meanwhile Brewing very frequently and now I have been converted to a Distant Relatives fan. On my last visit I was craving a pulled pork sandwich and decided to order from Distant Relatives vs. my other usual. WOW! First off, our food was ready at lightning speed! They took our phone number to text when ready and the food was literally ready within 1 minute! The sandwich came piled with juicy pulled pork, bright purple pickled cabbage, and smothered in their chili sauce. I was a little intimidated by the chili sauce because it looked super spicy, but it was the perfect amount of tang and heat! Not too spicy at all. The pickled cabbage paired so well to cut through the rich, smoky pork. It was amazing. On one other occasion we got the brisket sandwich and it was a winner in my fiancés opinion! He loved the green bean remoulade and how it paired with the brisket. I would highly recommend trying out this food truck when you are in the area. Their food goes perfectly with beer, so it is a perfect match! You can really tell that they put a lot of effort into crafting a great bbq experience and I will definitely be coming back to try more! read more
