I want to give a shout out to the folks at Space Kat since they're newer on the scene here. It's Texas style BBQ but different cuts than most places; they don't serve brisket. We tried the lamb, coppa, akaushi, and ribs, as well as all of the sides. Everything was really solid and each of us liked different meats best. My favorite was the lamb and you must get the chimichurri with it. None of the sides blew me away but they are better than average for a BBQ spot. It was $150 for a tray that fed 4 of us, a bit steep and the akaushi is more expensive than brisket at any of the best spots so I don't think I'd get it again. We went on a Saturday for lunch, it's not the kind of place (yet) where you need to line up early. They have covered picnic tables but still quite hot in the summer! Been eyeing this bbq food truck for a while and was excited to finally visit for lunch today! Not going to lie, it was the name that originally intrigued me, but luckily the food is awesome too. Space Kat BBQ's hours are pretty limited (only open from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. from Thursday to Sunday) but was totally worth the resulting mid-afternoon bbq hangover. We arrived around 11:40 a.m. on a Thursday and there was no line. I split half a pound of the choice tri tip (they offer two kinds of tri tip: choice and Akaushi, the choice is leaner), a large mac & cheese, and two Hawaiian rolls with a friend. We were very impressed by the lean cut of beef and the juiciness of the meat. Pure perfection! Our order came with three sauces and pickled onions, jalapeños, regular sliced onions, and pickles. My favorite was the warm tomato-y sauce, which meshed perfectly with the brisket. The mac & cheese noodles were perfectly cooked with a creamy sauce that we enjoyed. Overall, a fantastic indulgent lunch and good portion size for two. We chose to eat our lunch at the food truck park and it was a little toasty outside, although the tables are covered (a nice misting fan would make the space perfect as it becomes even hotter this summer). This was another bright red food truck that I have recently visited. Space Kat BBQ has set up on the back patio of Aero Club in Mission Hills from Thursday through Sunday. Interestingly, their roots are from Ohio. They serve Texas style BBQ in the form of brisket, chicken thigh, hot link, pulled pork, ribs, and tri-tip. These meats are sold a la carte or as a meal that includes two sides. Those choices were cowboy beans, coleslaw, or potato salad. I picked three meats a la carte for my to-go box... a half pound each of the brisket and tri-tip, plus one hot link. Homemade pickles, onions, a sweet BBQ sauce, and a tangy BBQ sauce came with the order. The link had a bit of spiciness, but it wasn't to the level of a jalapeno sausage that I have tried before elsewhere. The tri-tip was the better meat cut of the two. It matched very nicely with the sweet sauce. Having traveled to central Texas less than a month ago and tasting the barbecue at one of the meccas in the country, the products here were a fairly good representation of that region. Of course, chicken thigh and even pulled pork are not commonly found in the BBQ pits of the Lone Star State. I gave a four star rating for the food quality and cost at Space Kat BBQ. read more

Oddly, I found this spot on a Instagram add! I love bbq so I decided to come today on a Thursday. I was scared food might sell out because I know how fast bbq can sell out! So I arrived with my boyfriend a little early. They open at 4pm and we got there at around 5pm. We ordered the 3x meat combo with two sides. (47$ total with tax) In the pics are tri-tip, brisket and hot link. The sides were Hawaiian roll and cowboy beans! Can I just say, the food was freaking amazing. BBQ meats and patio seats! (aka the only thing you really need this summer) If you're looking for a good 'que spot, my favorite one actually, you gotta head to Space Kat. It's a truck you'll find parked in the patio space behind Aero Club. Head on through Aero, past the pinball games (but go back to play those for sure), and there you'll find Space Kat. The truck sits on a good size patio with plenty of seats and the smoky smell of meats. It's the smokers for me, just a whiff of those and you know deliciousness is coming. First trip: I went with a two meat combo- pulled pork and brisket. Both were delicious. Juicy, smoky, good bark, and they're complimented quite nicely by the sauces (but you don't NEED the sauces) which for me is what I want out of bbq. I also added a couple meaty items on the side- a hot link (gimme gimme gimme) and the specials sign on the truck said something about a Texas Twinkie. I asked and it's a bacon-wrapped roasted jalapeño been stuffed with a mixture of mascarpone cheese and brisket. Yeah, I definitely wanted that in my mouth. The two meat combo comes with two sides- I picked the cowboy beans and the potato salad. Man, the beans were the best beans I've had. I was expecting the BBQ to be good, but who would even notice beans next to that meat? That's just how good they are. They have a decent kick to them and they're a delicious accompaniment to the meats. The potato salad was good too, I like a creamy cool starch side dish, but it's those beans I'm still thinking about. I also ordered some rolls. They're nothing fancy, they're cheap store-bought rolls, but they cooled my mouth down from the slightly spicy stuff and I'm always down for more carbs. Second trip: I invited my meetup group to eat some 'que, enjoy some drinks, and play some games which was a great night. I would have loved to get a second GLORIOUS platter of all the meats and sides, but I had to go light. I ordered the mac & cheese, your choice of pulled pork or brisket on top, and it can be finished off with your picks from the topping tray like chopped onion, pickled onions, pickled jalapeños should you be so inclined. I also went with another Texas Twinkie. I like how a loaded Mac & Cheese was my light bite, but hey, it was and it was tasty. The mac & cheese is creamy, the meat provided more substance (and that smoky deliciousness!) and you know I love those Texas Twinkies. To sum it up- GO. Eat meats and slurp beans. Go home happy. Was here at the Aero Club and this BBQ truck is posted there all night! They are open until 1am on a Friday night! Super friendly, original owner is from Ohio and serving Texas BBQ. I just visited Austin, Texas for Terry Blacks brisket and Salt Lick, so now that I know what Texas BBQ tastes like I can actually comment on BBQ lol. (I only knew Phil's , but now I know Grand Ole BBQ in East County!!) Got the brisket meal with two sides of potato salad and coleslaw. And it was really good! They said it was smoking for 12 hours. Mixed meat of moist and tips so you got a little of everything. They give you two sauces or Tangy and Sweet and I preferred the sweet sauce. They have a killer rub and a bbq sauce that totally slaps and when you create a mini rib sandwich with the soft rolls and pickled veggies included in the full rack meal ($49), the combo is heavenly! I wasn't a fan of the sides (slaw and potato salad) but someone else might be! They were a bit on the boring/dry side and didn't bring the flavor to match the bites of meaty goodness. Still, don't sleep on the ribs with the rolls! They are super friendly and they know how to cook some BBQ. It is a hybrid between Tx and Cali BBQ. Whhhaaaatttt?! Love it. They offer some very tasty brisket, sausage, tri-tip, pulled pork, ribs and chx thighs. We have eaten all of it and the brisket, tri-tip and sausage are our favorites but come and find your favorites. We have literally eaten their BBQ almost every weekend since they opened. You can get rolls to make sandwiches or you can just eat the meat as is. That is what I do for sure but my hubby likes it make sandwiches. However you eat it, you will love it. I've loved this place. Food is always great. You can wait a little bit to get into the bar or to get served once you're waiting. I hate that I never quite know when they are open. Sometimes I walk by the trailer is open out back and it's a nice surprise. Other times like recently it's shut for the season. Once you order from the trailer window they had to you before serving the next person. You seat yourself at picnic tables. Drinks are from the bar. The sound can get a little rowdy but it's pretty fun and great to have this hopping place open late in the neighborhood. It's my fave BBQ in San Diego hands down. Got takeout from Space Kat for dinner. The food was tasty but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat there since it's located in the back patio of a bar. We ordered the brisket and pulled pork which are BBQ staples that we get everywhere we go. The brisket was smoked nicely but our portion was super fatty which meant there was a bunch of it we couldn't eat. What we did have tasted good though. The pulled pork was yum. We also added Hawaiian rolls to the order which they forgot but we didn't realize until we'd gotten home. All this to say, this is a convenient and tasty spot if you're already at the venue but I definitely wouldn't go there specifically to get BBQ. read more

Interesting place and set up. BBQ was decent but in my opinion was a bit lacking, the ribs were very small, the brisket was a lump of meat, not sliced. Sauces were undefined in flavor profile. Offset smokers a plus however I'm my opinion, still needs a bit of dialing in. The sides I got coleslaw tasted very odd I could not eat it, and the beans not good, also tossed away. Expensive, cost me $40 just for myself and one 2 meat plate without any add on's. Unfortunately I've had Heritage in SJC, and it kind of ruins you for anything else. Been to Franklin's in Austin for some crazy good BBQ so I do have some reference. I wish these guys well, it's just not to my personal taste. read more

I have to say I loved the style of barbecue at this place. everything was fresh and delicious including their tangy barbecue sauce. I loved it so much I went back to same weekend for s'more.
