Keith's BBQ is a school bus with a rotating schedule that happens to serve barbecue. Their schedule is located on their website. I love that Keith's does a rotation close to my workplace once every couple weeks so my lunch for that day is fun and different. Now to preface, I don't think their barbecue is the best in Texas, but for the price they sell it at, it's definitely become an office lunch staple. The quantity they give is generous, and I can usually get full off the 2-meat plate and I eat a decent amount. The 2-meat plate is $15 + tax/tip and it comes with two meats out of brisket, sausage, ribs, chicken, and pulled pork. I've tried all of their meat options now, and they are definitely very solid. I would say their pulled pork and brisket are amazing with their barbecue sauce. Not sure what they put in the barbecue sauce, but it feels homemade and is probably the best barbecue sauce I've had. I only wish they had a spicy option. The workers are nice and the service has been very pleasant every time I've been. Overall, very good bang for your buck so definitely give them a try! read more

This is fantastic Texas BBQ. I've had just about all of the BBQ in central Texas and this is definitely one of the best I've ever tasted. You can tell when walking up to the truck from the lovely smell of the smoker that you're in the right place. I got the two meat combo with brisket and the pork ribs (best ribs I've ever had). My gods, this was some good BBQ! I was in Austin for SXSW and told to try the also awesome Iron Works. But the first time I showed up to Iron Works there was an hour long wait out the door. I was way to hungry for that. Then I here a hippy calling from across the street "You want some BBQ, man!" I see this awesome school bus that smelled pretty killer. Deciding school bus BBQ now beats Iron Works BBQ in an hour, I gave it a try. And I wasn't even vaguely disappointed. I had the brisket and it was so tender and well flavored. The side of beans were just hot enough and had a ton of flavor of their own that only added to what the brisket was doing instead of subtracting from it. Great stuff! The hippy selling me the food was super friendly and everything looked clean and well maintained. I couldn't have asked for a better BBQ experience. When I did get to try Iron Works a couple days later, I was equally blown away by how good it was but...not MORE blown away. Keith's went toe-to-toe with Iron Works in my opinion. It's disgusting how good this place is. Think ravaged-your-hands-with-grease and licking-sauce-off-forever disgusting. I was about to drive off to another nearby spot in north Austin when I heard the music. In the three seconds it took me to source the music, I picked up the first hint of smoke, and all of a sudden I found myself hooked. Think Bugs-Bunny-floating-through-the-air-on-the-trail-of-carrot-soup hooked. The rest of it was really quite simple. I ordered from the off-menu option of Brisket by the pound. Got some wonderbread to go with it and stocked up on the sauce. Found a table, made a total mess of my hands, and put together marvelous slabs of Brisket Saucewiches. Visually, the sliced brisket lit up all the right colors, ranging from deep-charred brown to smoke-ring red to heart-attack fatty white. Each bite of my other helping of sandwiched chopped brisket blended all of its flavor profiles perfectly together--like a bottle of hand-prepped french perfume--with the charred topnotes and savory basenotes from the beef as well as the sweet and mildly tart heartnotes in the sauce all tempered ever so slightly by the two white wedges of carbs. I won't pretend to claim I know anything about BBQ, but heck I'd buy the truck if I could. Crushed it. 5 stars. One imaginary star on top for service. Keith's stops by my job every other Friday and have done so for quite a while, and despite how good it smells, I've never tried it. Until today. I didn't get much, just a Rosie's Special which is a bean and cheese taco (I know, I know, it's a BBQ truck) with their chicken on a flour tortilla. It was one of the best tacos I've ever had. I paid $7 for it, which I cringed at initially, but it was easily the size of two tacos because it was overflowing with chicken. I picked a piece of chicken out as soon as I opened the foil and it was so juicy, tender and full of a smoky BBQ taste. Their beans have that BBQ flavor as well, throw in some melty cheese and a lightly toasted tortilla and it was heaven!! Well worth the money I paid. Truth be told I need to try some of their other meats, but I'm not even sure I can tear myself away from ordering this taco again! If a taco is this good, the rest has to be amazing. Ordered the Brisket Sandwich (sliced) with the yelp check in offer. The guy recommended chopped brisket but I wanted to compare Keith's brisket with Franklin's. The briskets in my sandwich were consistently good--moist but not overly fatty. Better than the bad batch but not as amazing as the on-point Franklin briskets. I wish the buns were lightly toasted and crunchy on the inside, and I wish the sandwich came with a lot more onions and pickles. Maybe even some on the side. I grabbed some BBQ sauce and I'm glad I did, since the sandwich was a little dry (brisket is moist but shy of enough, especially for sandwich, and there wasn't enough veggies). Having a limited amount of time for lunch, I figured popping by this food truck (err... bus) would be perfect to satisfy a BBQ craving I've had since last week. The menu isn't very complex, and I didn't feel too overwhelmed. I got Keith's Special Sandwich- but like, in a tortilla (which is my favorite kind of bread). I had my pick of meats, and I chose both brisket and sausage, since those are usually my "tells" of a decent BBQ place. The service was friendly, speedy, and as I was handed my hand-packed food, I was excited to get back to my desk and try it out! The brisket is definitely a 10/10 on the moistness and overall flavor scale. I had mine sliced and the helping was certainly generous. This is the kind of brisket where you don't need any sauce (although their sauce was pretty good). The sausage? On this sandwich, it was one uncut link of goodness. In order to get anything out of someone's review I think qualifying the statement with a little background is imperative. So below are just a few points on my BBQ histories and beliefs 1. I fully believe that it is nearly impossible to separate the top tier of BBQ joints around the state and completely impossible (and maybe irresponsible) to narrow it down a specific list. Mainly because....sometimes I am hungrier than other days...sometimes the chefs are on point and other times not...I typically don't eat BBQ from several places back to back and therefore don't feel confident remembering which place I thought was more completely awesome....etc. etc. 2. My Typical Order for Reviewing: 2-meat plate - Brisket, Pork Ribs, Coleslaw and Potato Salad. 3. To name a few I have eaten at: Franklin's, City Market (Luling), Kreutz's (Luling), Snow's (Lexington), J. Mueller's, Mickelwaith, Stiles Switch, Southside Meat Market (Elgin), Meyer's (Elgin), Big Bib (Brady), and many many more. 4. My top tier (in no particular order): Franklin's, City Market, and Snow's. Now to Keith's... Keith's trailer comes by our office every other week and I have been able to try them twice now. The first time I had the brisket and ribs w/coleslaw and the second time I had the pulled pork sandwich with coleslaw. I have to say that Keith's easily fits into my top 5. Everything I have had there so far is excellent from the meat to the sweet and creamy coleslaw. I was particularly impressed with the moistness and humongousness of the pulled pork sandwich, and I am in fact still sitting here dreaming about it now as I type this review. The service is top-notch and friendly and they provide the additional benefit of being able to text in your order to speed up the process. Please give these guys a try and you won't be disappointed (except for those who have already tried it and were disappointed. I had low expectations when they pulled up in the parking lot. Actually enjoyed the school bus where the pit was in the back in the generator in the front. However, the meet is serious. The brisket was moist and they use the Franklin method of wrapping with butcher paper. I do prefer more salt on the bark but was impressed nonetheless. The pulled pork was exceptional. It is on the sweet side (as opposed to the vinegar). my business partner was impressed with the chicken. Today, we had a comparison since our office provided BBQ from Rudy's. Keith's was much much better. The beans were very good. To the person who criticized for not having potato salad, I can only say a "really?" Judge what is on the plate. Never in my life nor any of my other barbecue friends lives have we ever picked a barbecue restaurant because of potato salad. The prices are extremely reasonable and of course the convenience is outstanding. There certainly isn't the line like there is at Franklin's barbecue or at La BBQ. I certainly would say it's a top 10 barbecue restaurant in Austin. I can't explain those with such negative reviews. I'm an amateur barbecue smoker and aficionado. I can only believe the people with the extremely bad reviews just happen to come on a bad day. BBQ can be like that, fickle beast that it is. read more

Barbecuing ain't easy. Nor is finding good barbecue to eat. Despite what the aggregate Yelp rating might say, Keith's BBQ is not good. It's not even close to good. The people are friendly and nice, and it's convenient when the drive their truck around and park outside your office at lunchtime. But the meat is straight up terrible. The brisket was tough, chewy, and roast-beefy. The meat had a smoke ring, but since it was cooked so poorly, one has to assume they injected chemicals to fake it. The sauce was mediocre. The sides were beans and slaw - I just can't take a BBQ place seriously when they don't even offer potato salad. I do have to admit the cole slaw was pretty tasty though. Based on the amateurish quality of the brisket, I have serious questions whether most of the 5-star reviews for Keith's are from genuine sources, or were perhaps part of a "marketing" campaign. You will notice that most of the 5-star reviewers have one or two reviews to their credit. Sketchy... And whoever said that Franklin had better watch out for Keith's (if in fact it was a real person) should have their Yelp account suspended for willful misconduct. I have never heard a more ridiculous culinary statement in my life. Franklin is a jedi master, and these guys are like backyard cooks. At least it was cheap at 7 bucks. If I ever I forget my lunch and reach the state of desperation where I might think about trying this place again, I think I'll stick to cole slaw, or maybe give the chicken a try. I've had Keith's BBQ a couple times now, and I can say it's not bad, but nothing special. The pulled pork is good, the sausage is standard Elgin-type sausage you buy at the store, and the sides are chips, beans, and coleslaw. The sauce tastes like Rudy's. The brisket is another story. I'm not sure if it's not cooked long enough or low enough, but it was very fatty and chewy... not the cooked-till-the-fat-melts wet brisket I like. So, $7 for a grocery store hamburger bun with half a Elgin sausage and a small portion of fatty, undercooked brisket (Keith's Special) is a threat to Franklin's? Not so much. My groom and I were dancing and socializing too much to eat at the reception. However, to our surprise Keith packed us two to-go boxes and put them in our get away car! When eating bbq by myself I almost always get a sliced brisket sandwich and tater salad. Not only is this sandwich in the top 3 I've had, but the price was a few dollars cheaper than the others.
