He was super friendly and welcoming, which I definitely appreciated. I ordered the 2-meat plate with ribs & brisket, mac & cheese, and yams, plus a sausage sandwich. The brisket was nice and tender, but I asked for a moist/loose cut, and I don't think that request translated. It still had good texture, just wasn't quite what I was hoping for. The ribs were good, but nothing really stood out to me. I think I'm just used to a different style of BBQ. The yams definitely tasted like they came from a can, and the mac & cheese... let's just say it could use a little more love. I also grabbed the sausage sandwich. It was okay, but I'm used to homemade links with a deeper smoky flavor, and this one just didn't have that barbecue smoke profile I was looking for. To be fair, maybe I just caught them on an off day. I was literally the only customer there, and at first I honestly thought they were closed. Now... being from Houston, it's hard not to compare BBQ. We have some seriously incredible barbecue spots. Dare I say... some of the best in Texas... maybe even the world! My favorite was the lamb and you must get the chimichurri with it. None of the sides blew me away but they are better than average for a BBQ spot. It was $150 for a tray that fed 4 of us, a bit steep and the akaushi is more expensive than brisket at any of the best spots so I don't think I'd get it again. We went on a Saturday for lunch, it's not the kind of place (yet) where you need to line up early. They have covered picnic tables but still quite hot in the summer! Space Kat BBQ's hours are pretty limited (only open from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. from Thursday to Sunday) but was totally worth the resulting mid-afternoon bbq hangover. We arrived around 11:40 a.m. on a Thursday and there was no line. I split half a pound of the choice tri tip (they offer two kinds of tri tip: choice and Akaushi, the choice is leaner), a large mac & cheese, and two Hawaiian rolls with a friend. We were very impressed by the lean cut of beef and the juiciness of the meat. Pure perfection! Our order came with three sauces and pickled onions, jalapeños, regular sliced onions, and pickles. My favorite was the warm tomato-y sauce, which meshed perfectly with the brisket. The mac & cheese noodles were perfectly cooked with a creamy sauce that we enjoyed. Overall, a fantastic indulgent lunch and good portion size for two. We chose to eat our lunch at the food truck park and it was a little toasty outside, although the tables are covered (a nice misting fan would make the space perfect as it becomes even hotter this summer). I ate it as protein before getting to the star of the show - the sides. However, I'm finding a newfound appreciation for meat. We keep going back to True Texas bbq for casual meals out, because they simply give you the best bang for the buck, and it's actually better than quite a few well-known bbq establishments. Last night, I had the juiciest turkey I've ever tasted. I think I got some slices from near the end, that contributed to that, because as I worked my way inwards through the slices, they returned to normal juiciness. However, normal for True Texas bbq is still very moist. It was better than the last 3 or 4 bbq turkeys I've tried. I usually order a quarter pound of turkey, but I was hungry and ordered a half pound. I'm glad I did! A pound of meat split between the two of us was the right amount, because we were quite hungry. My husband ordered the lean brisket, which we kind of regretted. Fatty brisket is too fatty for us, but we realized we could have ordered a quarter pound of lean and a quarter pound of fatty, and had the perfect balance. Next time! And, there will be a next time! My only complaint was we specified "no bread" and they gave us bread anyways. I hate to see food wasted!

I got home all excited and opened the slaw container and noticed IMMEDIATELY that that were pieces of kale in my slaw...THAT IS NOT TEXAS!!! No disrespect to any transplants but WE DON'T DO THAT HERE! So whoever thought of this and the panel who greenlit it needs to take it back to wherever they got it from. No true Texan wants this. It even TASTED green *vomit*. I get BBQ for the indulgence...when I'm ready to be on the straight'n narrow I'll go to Clean Juice until then take the darn kale out the slaw, put the mayo back in and make it more creamy than vinegary and keep it Texas! Sorry to harp on the slaw but it was just BAD. I had to update this because now I'm worried next the brisket beans will be made with some kind of brisket substitute or something crazy! This is just a bridge too far for me after the mac and cheese. I'd say still get the meat but leave the sides. Make your own, get them from somewhere else or go without; but save your money on those.

They do offer some green beans, but they looked unappetizing. I got the $25 three meat plate (it should have been half that price) and it only came with one measly pork rib. The brisket was fairly decent, but the smoke ring was barely discernible and you don't get much. The one rib they gave me was the star of the show on the plate, but like I said, they just give you one rib (and they expect a tip for this). Their barbecue sauce is thick and definitely on the sweet side which may appeal to some but not to all. They do have some soft drinks and iced tea, but no beer. I opted for a cup of water which will cost you 25 cents. They do offer some other options, such as breakfast tacos, catfish, and some other fried items, but they are primarily barbecue oriented. So based on that premise alone, I would scratch this place off your "must try" Texas barbecue list. I hate to run contrary to all those four and five star yelpers, but this place just does not compare to any of the other better barbecue places around. Even Bill Miller bbq is better.
