This barbecue spot apparently was established in 1987 and sits in an old shabby strip center next to an ice cream shop and salon. It doesn't look like much has changed here since it opened. That could be a good thing or not such a good thing. The latter seems to be more true. They do serve Myers Elgin sausage which means they don't make their own sausage here. As for the sides, they do not have any coleslaw, their potato salad tastes as is if it comes from Walmart and their beans are pretty mediocre with no trace of brisket. They do offer some green beans, but they looked unappetizing. I got the $25 three meat plate (it should have been half that price) and it only came with one measly pork rib. The brisket was fairly decent, but the smoke ring was barely discernible and you don't get much. The one rib they gave me was the star of the show on the plate, but like I said, they just give you one rib (and they expect a tip for this). Their barbecue sauce is thick and definitely on the sweet side which may appeal to some but not to all. They do have some soft drinks and iced tea, but no beer. I opted for a cup of water which will cost you 25 cents. They do offer some other options, such as breakfast tacos, catfish, and some other fried items, but they are primarily barbecue oriented. So based on that premise alone, I would scratch this place off your "must try" Texas barbecue list. I hate to run contrary to all those four and five star yelpers, but this place just does not compare to any of the other better barbecue places around. Even Bill Miller bbq is better. The food was edible. The prices were shocking!!! The potato salad taste like it came out of the tubs they sell in a grocery store. I did not leave with a warm and fuzzy feeling considering it was a local Family business. They also failed to fill my order correctly and didn't put the pint of beans in our bag. (we were the only people in there) We didn't realize it until we had gotten home, so be sure to check your bags before you leave!!! The place appeared to be very clean and spacious but has a real divy vibe. This is not my kind of BBQ. I would not reccomend this BBQ place to anyone and I will not go back. read more

It only took me once to try this spot to know this is where I'll go for my hamburger or bbq cravings! It's a small family owned business so the service is phenomenal! Don't let the outside appearance fool you!! It's definitely a diamond in a rough! The cheeseburger hits the spot. It reminds me of the homemade burgers my mom used to make. I always make it a point to stop in for breakfast whenever I'm nearby, and this place never disappoints. While I enjoy all the breakfast tacos on the menu, the brisket tacos are my favorite. The brisket is incredibly flavorful, with that perfect smoky taste, and the meat is so tender it practically melts in your mouth. Every bite is packed with goodness! I've also ordered plates and sandwiches here, and they've all been fantastic. The Duke sandwich, combined with sausage and brisket, is hands down my top pick. I went to Vic's on Friday February 23 2024 I spent $64.54 $16.34 on brisket two sausage link $10.70 and $18.62 on 4 pork ribs $3.25 small beans, banana pudding and ice tea $2.75 = $57.76 $4.77 tax than another $2.03 to process payment. All 3 meats was so grease I could not even eat it,so I didn't want to waste $64.56 so I tried to boil it ,it was still grease money just wasted now the banana pudding was just that it had two cookies on bottom and two on top,no bananas the beans was OK but I am so disappointed Vic's had real good food once a point in time now the don't even care they use to give you real lemons for your tea now they give you fake pack of lemon juice. I spent to much money to get this type of purchases from Vic's they lost my business. A little grease is OK but the grease pouring off the meat and just un eat able. Somedays the brisket is excellent and somedays its just alright. It's tough to rate bbq joints unless something clearly stands out above the rest or just isn't good. The portions to price ratios are fair but consistency is 50/50. I like Vic's BBQ but its hard to love 'em! Order a meat plate or a combo plate. You'll get to try more and better for your buck. Sausage is good, not greasy. BBQ Sandwiches, i don't recommend bc there about the size of something you'd make at home, doesn't resemble something served in a restaurant. I do make it a point to stop at this place every time I am near Austin. Last week I introduced my brother, also a Vic, to this joyful place on my way back from the Alamo Bowl. Locally owned since the 80s and run by Vic and his family, the food and friendliness are unmatched. I had the brisket and smoked sausage plate lunch with a Big Red soda - because they have it - along with greens and beans and fried okra. Also the breakfast tacos and burritos are fabulous. For lunch or breakfast this place never disappoints. Bonus - it is on the road to the airport and I have visited after landing and before departing. Last week the passengers on my flight had to endure the tasty aroma of a pound of brisket i brought back to Tennessee. Brisket for lunch and dinner - YES! These guys have been around a long time & usually have a lunch line. Pork chops are great, as is the pork ribs & brisket! The sausage is not worth the exorbitant BBQ restaurant prices though. I haven't tried the chicken or beef ribs, but I keep coming back for brisket as that's my fave! read more

We stopped by (another item on our list) about 30 minutes to closing and the place was basically empty. We got 2-meat, sausage and brisket, which came with two sides (we got beans and potato salad), that also comes with two slices of plain bread. The sausage was better than the brisket, which was a bit dry and not super flavorful; they have awards on the ceiling so maybe we just don't know what good bbq is, but we know what we like and this wasn't as good as other places we have been to. We also wanted to try the ribs, so we got 4 - quite expensive! It came out to about $14, which seems excessive. They were good, but nothing special, not great. Even though it's pretty close drive for us we'll probably go somewhere else (like Valentina's) for a bbq fix. read more

The sausage was very soft, but tasty as I found it surprising since most sausage I've had are pretty thick from the skin and the juices pop into your eye! This sausage is good and avoids all that. My dinner schedule was set in a different time zone and by the time I realized that I was hungry, it was getting close to 8pm. The hotel concierge recommended Vic's Bar-B- Que since it was near. I got there five minutes prior to closing. The staff was ok with me ordering as long as I didn't mind them cleaning up. I got the two meat combo; brisket and ribs. It comes with two sides; potato salad and beans. I liked the brisket better than the ribs. It was flavorful. The ribs were good but not as tender as I liked. There was bbq sauce that I could have added, but I didn't. I feel that good bbq shouldn't need additional seasoning. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. Prices are reasonable compared to others. Overall this place is worth a visit if you are looking for decent bbq. I would return. read more

Vic's just ain't what it used to be. Vic's used to be reasonably good BBQ for the price, and a value compared to some of the big boys like Terry Black's. Not any more. Vic's prices have gone up, their brisket is at least the same price as Terry Black's maybe more these days, but it isn't nearly as good as Terry Black's or Black's or any of the other "names". If you like your brisket lean: 1) be prepared that they do charge $1 more for lean (not unheard of) 2) be prepared for them not to actually give you a lean cut. When you ask for lean at Vic's, they don't just go cut from the lean side, even if you ask them to. They will not cut into a new brisket until the completely serve the one they have already cut into. So, if you ask for lean, and you aren't at the first cuts, what you get is a piece of fatty brisket that they cut the layer of fat off, and with it the bark. So now, not only is there no bark, but it is still a fatty cut, and the texture is not the same. Moral of the story, this lean brisket eater will not be ordering brisket at Vic's again. Also the price of their sides has gone up, while the portions of their sides have gone down. I like their potato salad, but the side portion is laughably small especially for $2.99 All that said, I do like their BBQ chicken, and it is one of the only BBQ joints in town where you can get BBQ chicken, so on occasion I will make a trip there for that, but aside from that, considering all I have written, I will go to one of the many other BBQ joints in town and spend my money there, because Vic's has taken themselves out of the competition. read more

This is an original southeast Austin biz with good old fashioned BBQ. The breakfast tacos with brisket($4.95): 1 with egg and the 1 with refried beans are delicious Don't forget to ask for the homemade salsa or BBQ sauce. The brisket was moist and flavorful with good bark first thing in the morning--real Texas breakfast taco. My favorite was the brisket and beans because their beans are yummy. During Coronavirus mask is required for everyone's protection and the place is homey, clean and full of nice folks. I'll be back some more tacos soon!! Honest review: Hands-down one of the best sausage wraps I've ever had. The meat to tortilla ratio was damn near perfect, sausage wasn't spicy it had a true smoke barbecue flavor. Brisket sandwich. Yes. Marble cut, never go wrong. Side of beans, perfect. Potato salad was great. NOW THE SAUCE! Good god. I could bathe in it. Staff was very friendly. 10/10 would come back and recommend. Recently went in to grab lunch to go for myself and friends. The meat handler was great he was very pleasant and helpful. The ladies were grouchy/grumpy plus they charge you for not using cash but, since the pandemic I haven't used cash at most places. I ended up having to pay that 2xs because they forgot my potato salad didn't say I'm sorry for the inconvenience nothing that they forgot it and didn't charge me. I personally didn't find the food tasty as it used to be. It was a place I'd normally recommend but this will be off the list unfortunately. read more

Vic's was always that place I drove by, whenever I had business in a somewhat industrial neighborhood, where I wouldn't normally want to stop and eat... But I always told myself I would try Vic's, and now I'm glad I did! The inner debate was between this place or Cafe Creme, after an epic hike at McKinney Falls State Park. I felt that hearty BBQ was more fitting to the outing than fru-fru crepes. I got a combo plate of brisket and chicken, which came with sides, of which I chose potatoe salad and green beans, and then topped the whole thing off with a Mexican coke. I stopped in here with my husband for dinner one evening. It is definitely A-Ok BBQ. Not the best, but it is good solid BBQ. I am a brisket and sausage girl myself, but my husband raves about their pork steaks here so I decided to get the 3 meat plate so I could have a little of each. I knew it would likely be too much food, but I could always take the leftovers home. This is just what I did. The sausage was ok, the brisket was good and flavorful, but the pork steaks were great! I don't recall ever really seeing pork steaks as an option at most BBQ places around here, so I thought it was unusual. It is so easy to over cook port too, but these were done right. The smoke ring went almost all the way through the pork steak. The sides I had with my meat plate were the potato salad and beans, which were both just ok. If you are looking for some decent BBQ down south this is an option. I would stop in here again. read more

I'm going to call this my favorite barbecue place in town. Upon arrival, I was already somewhat full. With what was presented to me, I found room. The brisket is melt-in-your-mouth tender, the pork ribs are perfect, and the beef ribs? You know the closing sequence for The Flintstones when the waitress brings out a giant rib and the car tips over? You get the idea here, then. DO NOT forget to order the beans. They are hands down the best beans I've ever eaten in my life and I would come here just for that. The sauce is pretty good, but the meat was handled so well that I almost forgot to use it. The service is very pleasant and Vic himself came to greet us. The restaurant was full with satisfied looking people chowing down on great food. I hear they have great breakfast tacos, so I'll have to make the journey down for that. You also needn't worry about standing around for hours before being served. Needless to say, if I ever end up on death row, Vic's is definitely on the short list of what I'd like for my final meal. read more

Vic's has been CONSISTENTLY fantastic since I have moved to Austin in 2001. WHY? It's damn good bar-b-que that 1) doesn't break the bank, 2) YOU WON'T HAVE TO WAIT IN EXTREMELY LONG LINES TO HAVE SOME BBQ (ahhhem, Franklins), 3) has plenty of parking, and lastly but most importantly this place WILL NOT RUN OUT OF BBQ no matter how long you have been waiting to taste some local meat(s). A modest $8.99 for a 2-meat plate (ask for fat if you want fat on your brisket! They will be more than happy to leave some on for you) with 2 slices of bread and delicious homemade potato salad (or pinto beans that have a kick to it) - your choice. The sweet tea is excellent, as my boyfriend claims, and didn't need extra sugar at all. Refills are free on tea and water of course. There is even a pot of coffee brewing all day for free (no cost). I will go back to try the burgers one day and maybe the tacos too. I noticed they have breakfast plates as well that I have yet to try on the cheap. LONG LIVE VIC's BBQ! God knows I love my BBQ waaaaaay too much to have to stand and wait HOURS for it on the "east side". Ain't nobody got time for that. Four hours later, I am still belching and tasting the ribs that seemed like they were baked or roasted in an oven instead of a pit. The brisket seemed to be prepared the same as the ribs. Five of us stopped at Vic's, near the airport when we arrived in Austin for a family barbeque tour. We ordered the Family Pak which provided 1-1/2 lbs of meat and some sides. After all, we were on a 5 day visit and didn't want to overload on the first stop. This was an early afternoon visit. The brisket was acceptable, not dry, but not really juicy. It had a good rub with a slight sweetness, with overall good flavor, with 1/8-1/4" smoke ring. It was fine, but did not knock anyone's socks off. With all of us coming from other locations without access to good barbeque, we would be glad to get this at home. The ribs were very smoky, pink all the way through, with a nicely flavored rub forming a crust. These were pretty good ribs and I would certainly eat them again. They were the smokiest we had on a six barbeque stops trip. The sausage was very finely ground with a soft texture, which was a strong favorite of several in the group, but a bit mushy for others. It was advertised as Elgin Sausage, but did not match what we had later at Southside in Elgin. It had great smoke flavor and was not laced with garlic, which is nice. The sauce was slightly translucent, slightly spicy, tangy balanced with a little sweetness and pretty good, although I mostly ate the meat without sauce. As for sides, the potato salad was pretty standard with yellow mustard. The slaw was a fine chop, pretty standard, creamy and somewhat sweet. The pintos had pleasant chile heat, but when eaten by themselves were slightly bitter, maybe too much cumin. They were generally OK with the meal. You are not going to go there for the sides but you will probably not avoid the sides when you have a full meal here. The people behind the counter were very nice and helped us through the ordering process. If I lived and worked in the neighborhood I would probably have ribs or a brisket sandwich for lunch on a reasonably regular basis. It's a nice little neighborhood joint. read more

I'm a relocated New Yorker and have only been eating Bar-B-Que for about 20 years since I moved to Texas. I think that I'm pretty picky too. I take my Yelp reviews pretty seriously and won't review a restaurant anymore unless I've been there at least twice. I'm also getting very stingy about 5 star ratings. With all of this said, I'm back from my 2nd lunch at Vic's. This place has about the best brisket I've ever tasted. It's always very tender and extremely flavorful. Highly recommended. read more
