Went to Vic's for lunch today with some co-workers. The building feels like it hasn't changed a thing since it opened a few decades back. It had that Texas BBQ charm and character which got me excited to eat. Cafeteria line style. Pop up and put in your meat order and they then ask you to choose between cole slaw and potato salad. I chose the two meat ribs and brisket with slaw. Afterwards you get one additional side, I chose beans. Don't forget to grab BBQ sauce at this point because it's not on the table like I'm used to. Lil Vic was there and he could not have been nicer. Incredibly thankful and courteous to his guests. Every answer I have him was greeted with a "thank you" or "of course sir." He was a pleasure to meet. As for the meat, overall it was a little dry while still having hunks of un-rendered fat. After cutting off the flavorless fat I wasn't left with much meat to eat. The sauce helped rte flavor and moisture levels of the meat a little bit not enough. The sides were simple but tasty. They were also portioned a lot larger than I was expecting. Overall the atmosphere is a bit dated and rustic but that's what you want in a BBQ place. The people were so nice and happy to see you. The sides were a plenty and tasty. The sauce is edible and has a decent taste which is great bc it will take a lot to cover up the bland flavor and dryness of the sub par brisket. I usually don't write reviews about the staff bc even if the staff is rude but the food is delicious, I'll go back , however, not only was the food droll and regular but with that lasting bad taste followed by heartburn, the staff was on that , "I dislike this as much as you will" attitude and there wasn't a half a smile to share between all 4 people. Upon entering, we were greeted quickly by rude lady remarking to us that our feet were dirty and immediately asked us if we were "gonna do something about that mud on your shoes?!" Then, the meat cutter just stared at us until we figured out how the process works. For two hot sides and a 1/4 lb of brisket, sweet tea and two bread slices, I paid 15$ , while my partner ordered a sandwich and tipped a dollar, but the lady refused to give him ice for the water. I had the pleasure of visiting Vic' s while on a recent business trip to Austin. I liked it much that I ate there three days in a row. One day I had lunch and dinner there. This place is pretty legit and authentic. It looks a bit rough on the outside, but don't let that deter you. The folks working there were very friendly. I ate the pork ribs, beef brisket sandwich (twice) and the big beef ribs. The beef ribs were my favorite and I think they only have that once a week - Thursdays I think. The sides were good - baked beans, corn, potato salad and the pickles. I loved the pickles. Meals come with a couple slices of plain, sliced white bread and you're ready to go. Had I written this when I first ate there, I likely would have made it four stars. But having more brisket elsewhere, and learning more and more about making my own, I had to bump it down a notch. Not that it's bad brisket. It's decent, when they don't screw up cutting it, leaving you with a pile of mess on your plate. Some cuts are better than others. It was fork-only pick apart good, but I would describe the "buttery" melt in your mouth more like overly greasy melt in your mouth. I had to wonder if they sop it, and if so, with lots of butter or something. There was a perceptible smoke ring, but not a strong one. The bark was flavorful and good. The side dishes are really an area where they lost some "points"; they didn't do justice to the meat itself. For the price, it was all a great deal, and it gets a recommendation. read more

When I can't get to Lockhart for bbq Viccs is one of my go-tos. They've got exceptional beef ribs! Only served on Thursdays and Fridays I believe. The pork ribs are yummie too! The brisket tacos are amazing. So simple but delicious. I am not a fan of the potato salad but the corn is definitely buttery goodness! Warning: The sausage is a greasy mess! Ewww! I tried BBQ brisket for the first time at the Los Angeles county fair a LOOOOOOONG time ago, from some super random BBQ stand and it instantly became my favorite smoke-flavored meat. Since then I've searched for that flavor and texture and nothing has even come close: enter Vic's. Vic's was recommended to us by Joe A. from the Red Roof inn, shout out to him... cool dude with real, honest opinions about Austin's BBQ. I knew I was in for something special from the moment I walked in: a smoky aroma filled the air. I turned to my fiancé with eyes wide open ready to feast. We wanted to try as much as possible so we got two "two-meat" plates, two sides and a big Texas-sized drink: at about $12 a plate ($14 w/ribs) this was a deal. The taste? Unbelievable. I can't even describe the feelings and emotions I felt while eating, EVERYTHING was delicious, even the slaw and potatoes salad both of which I NEVER touch. The corn, slaw, baked beans, and potato salad were off the chain. The star of the show, the "MEATS" were AMAZING. I walked in with expectations molded from foggy memory, Vic's slapped that memory and told it to go home. The brisket, the chicken, the ribs and the sausage were THE BEST. I feel like Vic's collected all of my favorite smoked foods from my past and put them in one restaurant, I love it and hate that there's no Vic's in Los Angeles. Nice neighborhood bbq spot. My friend has been coming jere for 5 years and swears they are a goto place. I went in to see a homie lil bbq spot with decent priced items. I had the half chicken plate with. Potatoe salad and coleslaw. And my friend hand a brisket sandwich and a sausage wrap. My potatoe salad was the star today. Mmm! My coleslaw was four day old slaw. Kinda soggy. My half chicken had great flavor. But was on the dry side. Probably just hold it in the warmer too long. I tried a piece of brisket from my friend and it was tasteful and juicy. I went there today and felt like I was taken advantage of by an infomercial. Read the small print is all I can say. I read the menu and order a two meat combo plate. Noticed that the cutter gave me some really bad pieces of brisket (sliced in junks), and tiny ribs. Then, after handing me the plate I walked up to the condiments bar and grab pickles, onions, and jalapenos. I get up to the cashier to pay and my meal is about $3.00 more than the combo option I ordered. I politely tell the cashier that I had the 2 meat combo. She then tells me that if I read the small print to the side of the combo I would see that a rib combo is more. She explains, that this comes up all the time. Why don't you change your menu then, instead of having small print?????????? Plate was still more than it should have been with that, but people were behind, so I just said oh well. As I sat down to enjoy my meal, I started looking over the receipt. They charged me $.35 for jalapenos for a total of $.70 at the condiments bar and $.25 for a plastic cup of water. I start looking around the restaurant and noticed there are little white signs everywhere in small print. Extra charge here, do not do this, do not touch this, etc..... I agree with another review: Even Bill Miller's is better. I would also say Rudy's would be like Franklin's compared to this placed. Food was dry and had no taste. The ribs had barely any meat on them to boot. The green beans tasted like they came out a can. Potato salad was blah..... This place has been showing up on my Yelp app for a while and I have always meant to try it since I don't live far away. Saturday was that day after reading a recommendation in the Franklin's BBQ thread. In the process of driving over for pick up I discovered several businesses for the first time. These include an independent Italian sub sandwich shop, a ginormous Goodwill, a little shack that undoubtably serve up some yummy Mexican food, and finally the Hot Bodies strip club. Reviews forthcoming for 3/4 of those places. Once you have seen one Goodwill, you've seen them all. Vic's BBQ isn't much to look at. It might have been an old convenience store in better days from the look of it. But the BBQ is the real deal and delicious. Ribs weren't as peppery and spicy as I have had recently, but they fall off the bone. Brisket comes in moist and lean as is par for the course. Maybe not as peppery as the previously mentioned "Best In America" place but not disappointing by any means. The moist is wonderful (melt in your mouth, blah blah blah, etc etc etc) and is reminiscent of Black's brisket's consistency. I dare say if you like Black's brisket (and some don't!) you will like Vic's. Sides were sides, but I enjoyed them. Potato salad was comparable to Rudy's. Normal stuff, but I always like it. Slaw was extra creamy/saucy. THAT'S how I like my slaw. Best I have had in a while. Pickles and onions are self serve. Jalapenos are .25 each so probably a bit overpriced, but the price is typical of BBQ places who charge for them. I wish they wouldn't. The thick sauce is also self-serve. There is spicy and mild/medium. The spicy is a little darker. I couldn't tell the difference between the two once I tried the spicy.There just wasn't much unique about it, but I would eat it again. There are a couple small bits of onions and maybe peppers in every ladleful as you fill your styrofoam container. Almost half a loaf of Mrs. Baird's white bread was given to me. Wow. I NEVER buy white bread. When I was little, around 1977-78, my mother stopped buying white bread (and whole milk and sugary cereals for that matter.) I have never bought it at a store or kept it in my house either. But when I get it at a BBQ restaurant, for basically free, I devour that white bread goodness. It just feels so wrong! One complaint on Vic's. I ordered a couple of sausage links and they didn't get put in the bag. It was just too hot to go back over and complain even though I am only 15 minutes away. I didn't have a receipt with all items purchased either just the total. I wasn't sure if I was actually charged. Not going to deduct a star, because the food was good, price reasonable and staff was friendly. I was the only one in line though and it really shouldn't have happened. My advice is to just keep an eye on your order. All in all, another great and possibly little visited entry in East Austin BBQ world. I will be returning! read more

The Mr Ex and I have stopped here numerous times for the brisket breakfast tacos to fuel up before a hike at Bastrop State Park or Lost Pines Resort. And we have often stopped on the way back for a brisket sandwich. I openly admit that I have been a roasted beef brisket BBQ sandwich whore since I was 10 years old when my parents started stopping at a gas station that served BBQ sandwiches in Elkart, TX on the way to my Great Grand Parents farm in east Texas. That said my EX Honey brought me by a Delicious BBQ sandwich from Vic's today that warmed up quite well in the microwave. The BBQ sauce was all soaked into the bun which made it a yummy mess. best kept bbq secret in Austin.

A coworker suggested Vic's for lunch last week, and it was good enough for us to make a second trip there within just a week. It's kind of funny that the main street sign for the restaurant actually advertises that the place has breakfast tacos, not barbecue. The building itself looks pretty old to say the least. Anyways, the place was completely packed during our first visit at around noon. You can tell right away it's a restaurant that gets all of its business from regulars and word of mouth. Memorabilia from local high schools and community groups line the walls, and the interior is just as rustic as the outside. The menu is short and simple, and all of the plates average about $10-$11. I've tried the brisket and sausage plates so far, which come with the choice of coleslaw or potato salad, the choice of green beans, corn, or beans as your second side, and the usual free pairings like white bread, pickles, etc. If there's a line, it should go by pretty quickly. If you've ever been to Rudy's or a similar establishment, you'll know what to expect. Austin has more than enough barbecue joints, many of which are excellent. I would say the brisket and sausage are both just pretty good; that's probably the only compliment I can give the meats here. However, Vic's has a few other things going for it: the history and sense of community you'll immediately notice, an extremely friendly team, and probably the fastest barbecue experience you'll have around here. I've always loved hole in the walls. When you see a full house inside a pretty rundown spot, you immediately know there must be a reason why that's the case. This is top 3 favorite BBQ in Austin for me. The interior is straight out of 1980 with wood paneling and old pictures of softball games from years gone by. They always have fresh iced tea with the option of sweet or un-sweet and a cooler filled to the brim with bottled soda like the real sugar Big Red. You get the option of sides with your meat like potato salad, coleslaw and pickles and onions. The brisket is my favorite cut of meat though I have tried all cuts and they are all yummy with that rich, smokey flavor. Vic's is more of a lunch spot as they close early. This is a low-key, out-of-the-way great place to pull off from your weary errands and grab a bbq sandwich, or - my favorite - breakfast tacos. Yes, who ever thought a BBQ place would serve breakfast tacos, but Vic's does, and they ain't bad - and they are cheap, cheap. I got two tacos with three ingredients, and it was just over $3 bucks. The other benefit: this place never seems crowded. My taco was ordered and delivered in all of five minutes, or so it felt. Vics is so low-key, it reminds me of a secret. It still has that feeling of "nobody knows about this place," which I love. It may not sing-out as the best, or the hippest; the food may even be just so so, but the "This-place-is-mine-cause-no-one-knows-about-it" factor makes me love Vic's. Hey, and I'm also a huge fan of Burleson Road as a traffic-less, traffic-light-less artery to get from Ben White to Oltorf. (Too bad we can't review streets on Yelp: Burleson is five stars.) My boss and I tried Vic's today based on some Yelp reviews. I docked them a star for some slightly dry, although flavorful, BBQ. I had the pork ribs and the brisket and my boss tried the beef rib special. The servers and the line are probably the most efficient in Austin. Rudy's and especially Franklin's could learn a ton from the efficient line that has almost no waiting time, even during lunch. The menu is suprisingly expansive, including burgers, tacos, catfish, fried shrimp, and sides like fries and onion rings. The sauce is probably only second to Rudy's, with a pleasant spicy kick -- and served warm. Is it worth a drive from north Austin? Probably not, but it's darned tasty and certainly the best option south of the river and still in the city limits. read more

I took some friends here after F1 because of the yelp ratings, and I have yet to discover why the ratings are so high! I had the brisket plate, and the brisket was too dry. I knew I made a mistake the second I looked down at my plate, and there were no fat on the meat. My friends got the ribs and sausage. They said the sausage was good but didn't even finish the ribs. So, I've been on a BBQ kick lately, and I have to say, Vic's is probably my favorite! I love their beans and sausage, and the fact that they cut the meat right in front of you. I also love that I have never had to wait in line for more than 5 minutes when I've been in here, even during the busy lunch hour! The service is great, in house and when they cater events. I chose Vic's to cater my Credit Union's annual meeting, and they showed up on-time, served all 200 people more quickly than anyone else we've had cater, and even let the employees take some leftovers home! Their catering prices were also much cheaper than any other BBQ that I've seen when shopping for people to cater the CU's events. First off, i have to get this out of the way. When you go to a place like Vics and order brisket, expect the cut of meat to be whatever is next in line unless you specify a "moist" (fatty) or "dry" (lean) cut of meat. I see a lot of reviewers complaining about their cut of meat and not specifying which cut they ordered. With that said, in the world of BBQ there are sauce people and there are meat people. Meat people prefer that their dishes be seasoned and edible prior to the sauce going on. I myself am a meat person. Vic's BBQ is a prime example of a BBQ restaurant that caters to meat people. They know how to cook their meat before any sauce even touches it. They have over 13 awards for pork ribs on the wall and deserve them. If you come here and don't get the pork ribs or pork steak on your first go around you are missing out. Better yet, get their two meat plate and try the ribs and chicken combined. Their sausage is good but tends to be a bit on the greasy side. You definitely want to try their Sliced Brisket Sandwich on a bun (it typically comes on white bread unless you request a bun) instead of a sausage sandwich for an amazingly quick lunch. Their breakfast tacos are also excellent so if you are up early stop on by for a taco. They also have tea because everyone knows it is actually AGAINST THE LAW in Texas to eat BBQ without sweet tea *hehe*. Finally tried the chicken....and ribs again, of course. The chicken was very tasty, falling off the bone tender, smoked to perfection and awesome. Thus far, the sausage and chicken are both excellent and the pork ribs are still the best in the city, far and above *any* of pork ribs in a 50 mile radius. Skip the brisket, it's usually on the dry side and not their best showing. There is a reason they have 13 first place trophies on the wall for pork ribs. Another excellent showing is their beans. They are again, my favorite pinto beans in the city. I was extremely displeased with Vic's. Yes, I know most BBQ establishments off of busy, industrial highways generally cannot be good unless they are in towns with names such as Poville or Rebelson. Tell me about it. But I just had to run out and see why this South Austin meat shack had a healthy amount of reviews. I assume that the hours certainly benefit it. Opening at 6AM to crank out breakfast tacos, Vic's certainly has convenience on its side. Furthermore, you cannot really fuss up any sort of meat that individuals would eat on the way to the construction site or such, right? Brisket. That was all they had; that was all I wanted. Heck, I could die a happy man having eaten brisket for breakfast and lunch. Notice I left out dinner, simply for the fact that I could not bring myself to eat a dinner having had 2 bouts with smoked cattle, sliced please. So, the burnt exterior actually looked quite phenomenal. Boasting the slightest bit of unappetizing carcinogens, it just got me drooling. Let's go into it further. I asked for burnt ends, but I only got 2 pieces. Honestly, the 2 pieces were pretty dang close to Franklin in terms of fattiness and "meat sweet". You know what I mean by "meat sweet?" You know it. Other than that... I found the meat to be strongly tough and chewy. Darn it. The crust could have MADE you, Betsy. And you go off and be lean and not fatty. Vic's is on the way to my manfriend's house and I've driven by the little restaurant countless times without stopping in to check it out. That is until last Friday when my hangover got the better of me. At about 9 in the morning, not much is poppin at VIc's except for a couple of older couples hanging out enjoying their coffee and eggs. I immediately liked the atmosphere (looks like they haven't changed a thing since the 70s) and the service was spot on. The customers were just hanging out shooting the sh*t and were very friendly, too, asking me if I'd ever been to Vic's before, where I was from, etc. It was obvious that Vic's was their spot and they were very proud of it. Upon getting home, I chowed down on my breakfast tacos which were pretty good and healthy servings. I probably should have just ordered one. And for being until $2/each, it's a cheap joint for your morning taco fix. I'll likely stop by Vic's again for breakfast, but it doesn't look like a bbq place that I'd want to go to. Brisket, sausage and ribs were all stacked up under a heat lamp (likely from the day before that early in the morning, but even so not very appealing to the eye) and I didn't smell or see any smoke coming from the rear of the restaurant where a smoker should be. read more

This is my 50th BBQ review on Yelp, woohoo! I hit up Vic's today when I was in a part of town I rarely find myself in. I saw a sign for BBQ and that was all it took for this fool to pull over. I ordered up the 2 meat plate with brisket and pork loin. The brisket was decent, got a bit of lean and fat with my selection. The pork loin was well seasoned but a tad on the dry side. I got their hot sauce and it definitely had a kick to it. Their beans are real tasty, they've got some spice in there that work. The place is typical BBQ shack setup in an older strip mall next to a laundromat. The place got very busy while I ate, that's a good sign. If you are on the south side of Austin, it's a good place for a BBQ fix. Not a destination type place but good eats. read more

Very, very tasty ribs, great sauce. The brisket I ordered had too much fat for my liking and the sides were just average. That said, I did like the non-fatty portion of the brisket a lot and the peach cobbler my girlfriend raaaved about was quite tasty. This place was really really good. I am so happy I finally found some good BBQ near 78704. My first visit was today and I tried a little of everything. The sausage was very tasty and had a good texture. The brisket was moist and tender. The pork ribs were very tasty , not dried out at all, and came off the bone easily. My wife got the chicken, and I tried a little of it, and it was some of the best BBQ chicken i've ever had at a restaurant. Normally I skip ordering chicken for myself, but this tasted good all the way through. Chicken was very smoky and well seasoned all the way through. My wife didn't care for their potato salad or cole slaw very much, but we both agreed the beans were very good. I found myself drinking the sauce when I ran out of beans. Have been to Vic's at least 10 times for breakfast tacos. I order the chorizo, potato and egg. They don't skimp on the ingredients. Sometimes are better than others. The quality ranges from above average to really good. Pretty sure these are not for anyone on a diet. The chorizo adds a spicy flavor to the taco. The meat was mediocre, the potato salad was good and the beans were mediocre. In all fairness, I'm comparing this to Rudy's BBQ and Finley's Chicken & Ribs which are my two go-to places for BBQ here in town. Selection: B They have many different combos - the main meats are beef and pork ribs, chicken, sausage and more! Service: A The staff was extremely friendly and the guy that was cutting the meat was pretty forth-coming on the fact that one of the pieces of meat wasn't worth selling (a rib) because there wasn't a lot of meat on it. Decided yesterday to go eat at Vic's with two friends for lunch. Flat out, the food was good! Probably the best bbq chicken I've had in Austin. The brisket was also very good. It didn't have a lot of flavor in the bark of the brisket, but the smoke ring was exactly how it should be, and the tear on the meat was just right. A little resistance, but it came apart easily, which shows the grill check knows what he's doing! The decor outside makes it look really divey, more so than a mom and pop cool place. It is however, extremely convenient to get to if you live in South/East/Central Austin. There aren't a lot of options for sides, that would probably be my number one complaint, I get tired of beans, potato salad, and coleslaw being the only features at a BBQ joint. The true winning element though, THE SAUCE! It was just right for this type of BBQ sauce. It wasn't too thick, wasn't too thin, it had a little zest of something that gave it great flavor and just enough spice to make it have a slight bite a few seconds after you've swallowed it. One of the best sauces I've had in Austin yet. I highly recommend checking it out, and I'll be going back again to try the sausage and ribs. read more
