Rice on the Hill is a food truck in Southeast Austin, near the airport, on Riverside Drive. I was there on a windy, chilly night in February so I got my food to go. A to-go box filled with combination fried rice. And a couple of egg rolls. The egg rolls were good, but the fried rice was great! Lots of rice and full of shrimp, beef, chicken, and pork. First timer here and the food was delicious! We ordered (family of 5) general tso chicken, beef lomein, hot and sour soup, crab rangoons,fried shrimp and egg rolls. Super fast service and our food was hot and ready to eat and portion size was very generous. Make sure to ask for their very own house spicy chile oil. That stuff is ahhmazing! I had no idea this food truck has been at this location for 3 years until last week when a friend made me aware. She raved about the Sesame Chicken but I saw the Shrimp and Chicken combo on the board and ordered that along with the Wonton soup. I am sorry to say that I was underwhelmed. The broth in the wonton soup didn't have a desirable flavor and I was expecting chunks of shrimp and chicken, not slivers, in the combo dish. I am going to give them another chance and order the Sesame Chicken like my friend suggested and also try the Hot and Sour soup. read more

This is not Asian food. I ordered Kung Pao chicken. Not even close to what Kung Pao chicken is. At least cook it the same, use same ingredients. Even the fried rice was just brown rice. Horrible! read more

Best 'authentic' Chinese food truck in Austin. My first stop whenever I'm in town! I highly recommend this place!

Normally, the food is "okay." This time, it was horrible. I got a few scraggly pieces of meat and a sh*t ton of onions. I ate a few pieces prior to taking the photo, but the amount of onions is ridiculous. The saddest part is we got 3 orders of the Mongolian beef, and they all had mostly onions. Our 4th order was General Chicken, it was okay. The rice on all 4 orders was hard as f*ck. The egg rolls were okay...probably from HEB because they tasted just like theirs. Also had the crab puffs...meh! I'm pretty upset that I spent over $80 on some BS! I even had a man ask me if the food was good, it was his 1st time there, and because of my prior experience with RotH, I said, "Yes." If you happen to read this review...Sorry Bro'!! I just moved to Austin been here 3 month now and this Chinese food truck was good asf. Food was fresh and the service was fast.

I felt like the orange chicken was pretty good, even if it was a bit steep. The sauce that came with the wonton crisps could use some more flavor. I wish I had been offered a choice of side with the chicken instead of just getting brown rice. I would not walk from the hotels. read more

Recently tried this place for take out and was pleasantly surprised! I ordered the general tso with lo mein and my husband got the orange chicken with white rice. We also ordered 2 egg rolls with the total coming out to $32. A bit pricy but you do get a big portion of food. I felt there was some flavor lacking from the general tso but i really like it with the noodles. The egg rolls were really tasty. The orange chicken was flavorful but didn't like biting into small hard bits of orange peels. I'd definitely want to order again from here! read more

I'm not sure how to rate. I will agree with one comment, tons of onions. I had the General Tso chicken, it was just okay. It had two whole pieces of broccoli no other veggies. The hot and sour soup was too salty and loaded with green onions, which I disliked. A waste of money because after one bite couldn't eat it. The prices were more than what was online, but I guess it's not their fault it was off a general site. Was fascinated by the name but it wasn't an authentic place. They speak mainly Spanish. Odd? Found this place on a whim when I was craving Chinese food near me. Located in a small food truck park off East Riverside close to 71, the menu has everything you might want. The portions are huge. Fried rice was good, orange chicken was sweet and sticky, and the lo mein was my favorite. I might go back and just get a plate of the lo mein. Staff is friendly and bilingual. There are picnic tables outside if you want to eat there. The price of the plate shown plus the egg roll was $16.50. Because of the price I will probably go elsewhere next time, but this was def a nice treat. read more

I was SO surprised by this place. I crave Chinese food all the time, but there aren't very many classic options on the east side. So I was super excited when this popped up on Yelp one day. For the price, you get SO much food, and everything tasted amazing. One of my favorite Lo Meins I've had in awhile! My girlfriend is often adamant that Chinese food upsets her stomach every time, but I didn't hear a single complaint this time around, so that's the real seal of approval. I got the sweet & sour chicken (~$11) and egg drop soup ($3). Both were very underwhelming with the egg drop soup verging on disappointing. The sweet & sour sauce was the best part of the entree. Without the sauce, the chicken was pretty much flavorless and rice was hard/not good. The egg drop soup seemed like mostly stock, barely any egg - not even enough to get on a spoon. It also had carrots in it and no wonton crisps. The food came out in about 10 mins and they have picnic tables outside the food truck to wait/eat. Would not recommend. read more

My husband and I recently tried this place and had to go back for more. I had the beef and broccoli, which was so tender, flavorful, and juicy. The broccoli was amazing and soaked in the sauce. I also had the lo mein, which was decent and really flavorful--not dried out at all. My husband had the orange chicken and loved it! The orange chicken was soft to bite and also flavorful. This is a great place to pick up a quick dinner for the kids on a rainy day. I've been trying to find the right Chinese food place to my liking, we will definitely be back more often. read more

We just discovered this place and not only is it good Chinese food but it's fresh tasting and good portions. Also, they are open today on Christmas which I think is so generous and thoughtful of them for people like me that didn't have the energy or motivation to cook this year. I got the fried rice, Lo mein and egg rolls as well as the Buddha's feast. All the veggies were cooked perfectly and very tasty. I'll definitely be coming back. read more

I haven't had a lot of Chinese food worth mentioning in Austin. Sadly, the best I've had was the fresh General Tso's I'd get at HEB and East Buffet, which were both good for their aim, but nothing I'd go out of my way to recommend. I did like this place better than Din Ho Chinese BBQ and slightly more than 888 Pan Asian. This is tasty tender chicken. Good portion size. Certainly better than any of the other Asian options in this neck of the woods and better than most of the other restaurant/trailers period. The trailer is in the same parking lot as Honduras Food (excellent tacos, eat at both places). On the opposite side. I'd recommend calling in for takeout as there is no place to dine in. Read the reviews and decided to give this place a try. $21 for two large chicken lo meins, both of them filled up the square styrofoam container. Was more than enough to be two meals for me. The pieces of chicken were small but plentiful, and the only thing was maybe wanting more veggies in the serving- i may just ask for extra next time. I ordered it to-go but they have some tables if you wanted to eat outdoors at their place. This place is cash only so make sure you have some on you!
