Should have known it wasn't going to be good when there was only 1 other couple there on a Saturday night! We should have turned around and left when we were greeted with pointing to seats and nothing more. It only got worse. I ordered Honey Walnut Shrimp and they brought out a spicy dish with brown gravy and vegetables. I explained that isn't what I order and the waitress unhappily told me it was what I ordered, so I asked to see the menu. She pointed to a shrimp dish in the spicy section and I then pointed to what I ordered and then she kept shaking her head and saying yes that's it, when obviously it was not! My brother and I enjoyed the venue itself- it's cleaner than other Chinese-buffet type restaurants. I ordered the beef fried rice, my brother ordered the wanton soup. The food came out within 5 minutes of when we ordered; this made me question the freshness. The wanton soup tasted strongly of pepper, like the chef dumped in the whole can of McCormick black pepper. Sichuan River has become easily one of my favorite Chinese restaurants in south Austin. My go to's are the general tso and veggie lo mein. The Dan Dan noodles left a bit more to be desired tbh, while spicy it lacked flavor otherwise. The general tso chicken was super flavorful and very crispy fried chicken. It is in the strip center behind Sap's and across from Central Market. Recently, we ran in just before closing and placed an order. It came out fast and correct- even with my modifications. The egg drop soup is not particularly flavorful, but I love the thin ribbons of egg. The hot and sour is what you'd expect. The menu is extensive and there are always daily specials. This is the best Chinese food in Austin, as far as I'm concerned. I'm talking real Sichuan Chinese food, not just American Chinese food, with mala (mouth-numbing) spice, wok hei (char), and vegan options. I'm extremely picky about my mapo tofu, and this is the ONLY restaurant I've ever found that can rival the version that my chef friend makes. Soft tofu, rich, pungent, and boldly seasoned sauce with all the funky notes of fermented black beans; it's what I crave and could happily eat every single day. Don't overlook the seemingly plain vegetables, either. They do downright magical things with humble cabbage. The eggplant melts in your mouth. Green beans are tender-crisp and as compulsively munchable as potato chips. I can't explain why or how it's all so good. My big dilemma is that I want to try the whole menu, but I always want to eat the same things, too. Consider this a review in progress, but I haven't found a disappointing dish yet. read more

Sichuan River is the absolute shi-ite! I love everything about the place. Its got a feel that's almost like actually being in China. All the dishes are great but I could eat the Dan Dan Noodles daily. I get everything covered in the their amazing chili sauce. They use real Sichuan pepper corns in things so be prepared for the nummies. Shout out for being one of the only places open during snowpocalypse 2021 also. I came here for lunch early on a Saturday afternoon. We had no wait and immediately got the vibe that they cater more to their takeout audience. Something about the vibe felt off, almost as if we had shown up to someone's house uninvited. The staff was nice and attentive, but almost everything else about the restaurant screamed "we may be open for dine in, but we'd really rather you didn't" The menu is absolutely tremendous and had a lot of interesting options. Since my Sichuan experiences are rare in Austin, I stick to a more traditional dish and went for the sautéed spicy chicken. The portion size was quite large, but it's about in line with what I'd expect for their price point. The chicken was pretty good, it had a fairly mild pepper kick and you got a little bit of the numbing spice. I purposely ordered this dish because it wasn't described as popcorn chicken, as opposed to the similar spicy chicken dish, but the chicken I had was still quite bready. On the positive side, I thought the mix of vegetables was a great choice and went really well with the chili oil. One other downside to the dish was the sheer volume of oil used in the dish. Across all the plates my group ordered everything was drowned in oil. Overall, if you live in South Austin and are craving Sichuan, this spot should reasonable satisfy you. However I wouldn't come out of my way to try them and likely wouldn't have them in my regular rotation of spots to eat out read more

Got take out here for a big family meal. I ordered 7 dishes for 7 adults and it was so much food! It fed us for three meals! The service was great, yes even with getting takeout. And the food was ready within 15 minutes of placing the order. This is a great option for mid-tier (price wise) Chinese cuisine. My friends and I ordered this for dinner today and we were really excited to try it out of but we were left wanting more. Overall, I think that they had a great menu selection and there was a large variety of traditional Chinese dishes, however, the flavor each dish was kind of lack luster and watered down. We ordered Dan Dan Noodles, Jumping Fish Fillet, Spicy Sauteed Pork Intestines, Eggplant in Garlic Sauce, and a Black Milk Tea. 1) Dan Dan Noodles - It was okay. Not super spicy, a lot of oil, interesting choice of rice noodles. It was really soupy and watered down which might've been why it was more on the mild side when it comes to the spice. The portion size of the noodle is good though. 2) Jumping Fish Fillet - This was probably my favorite entree out of the one that we got. It fish was really soft and easy to chew. It was surprisingly really soft. We did expect it to be spicy/have a mala hit to it but it was a really light mild which I kind of liked. There were also pieces of cucumbers that was soaked in the sauce and that was really nice touch to the dish too. 3) Spicy Sauteed Pork Intestines: I was really looking forward to this dish but it was honestly very disappointing. The intestines were cooked for too long so it was really hard and hard to chew. There weren't that many pieces of the intestines, there really wasn't any flavor or sauce mixed in. It's just a whole lot of overcooked vegetables and intestines mixed together. 4) Eggplant in Garlic Sauce: I think this dish was not bad. There were some eggplants in there that tasted like they went bad. It honestly ended up as a game of luck to see whether or not you will get good pieces. The sauce was pretty decent but it wasn't mixed really well with the eggplant. 5) Black Milk Tea: To my surprise, this was probably my favorite out of everything that we got. I initially got it thinking that it would be mid since it was from a restaurant and not from a shop but it was very very good. The milk tea sweet, creamy, and I would honestly come back for it again. It balanced out the greasy savoriness of the other dishes really well too. The tea flavor was rich and it was mixed really well. Overall, the portions were good, I might come back to try again because it may have just been an off day. But not super satisfied with what we got. read more

We have a couple picky eaters, and I'm happy to report back that everyone is full and happy with all the dishes we tried. We placed an order online the night before and the process was seamless. We've been going to Sichuan River for years! We've gotten take out many times and eaten inside the restaurant a couple too. The food is Sichuan style and the spot is hidden a bit in a strip center off Westgate and 71. A few of our favorites here are the Dan Dan noodles - super spicy and delicious, Singapore rice noodles - not spicy and the kid loves them, dumplings in chili oil and the Chong king Mala chicken. Everything I've had here has been delicious! Something I'll never forget is during the Snowpocolypse, when power and crazy freeze happened in 2021, we were looking for food and Sichuan River was open and taking to go orders. It was a crazy day and many places were closed, but not this place! We appreciated what they were doing then and still love what the are serving up today. The staff here is awesome! read more

Sichuan River is insanely good food. They do the Chinese-American classics fine, but you come here for the numbing tingle of Sichuan peppercorns. Mapo tofu is the crown jewel, but Mala beef, eggplant in garlic sauce and dan dan noodles are amazing too. We get takeout here once a month, but the dine-in experience is as authentic as the food, so don't be offended. It's a family-run restaurant. Enjoy! read more
