    Fried pork potstickers.
    Wes O.

The fourth star is for being one of the few Chinese restaurants open during COVID-19. In fact, aside from the staff wearing masks, you'd hardly even know there was a change, which I appreciated. The food still comes out on actual plates, there's real silverware, and there's sweetener for the tea. First things first. The staff is friendly, efficient, and happy to customize orders. As far as customizing orders, I'd also note that the menu lists what's on every entree -- which, as a picky eater, I really appreciate. Also, the food comes out quick. Very quick -- as in approaching fast food speeds. Let's talk about the food. Fried pork potstickers. Classic Americanized Chinese food goodness. Unlike a lot of restaurants using the same food service product, these are the real deal -- steamed, then a quick pan fry before serving. And they're also larger than average. Combine these with the sauce and the chili oil (served on request) and you have a great appetizer to share or even a small plate for one. I also tried the General Tso's Chicken. Spicy Szechuan brags about serving all white meat chicken and it shows. As much as I know the quality of white meat is better, it also makes for a dryer entree. As such, I'd have appreciated a bit more sauce on the chicken. The large bowl of white rice was cooked correctly and made a perfect accompaniment for the chicken. All in all, it's perfectly good Americanized Chinese food -- and even more perfect as a dine-in option in the current environment.

Amazing ambience amazing vibes I love this place. However, now that I am back the next day horribly hungover re writing this review, I would say the sake was not as desirable as i hoped for.

One of my coworkers came here to get a few to go orders. This review is for the crab ragoons. The food I saw that the others received looks good. Smells good and doesn't have that weird look to it. You get about six in your order. Plenty of pink sauce. The ends are a little bit crisper than I'd like. The inside is not bad I've had better. Not bad for trying it for the first time.

We were proudly told that there has been a change in ownership. I cannot remember the name on the menu, but there was a change from Spicy Szechuan. I normally wouldn't rate a new business this low believing that it is unfair to judge to harshly until the staff gets into a normal business routine. But, in this case, the food is just not very good. The hot and sour soup was good (which is very important) but both our entrees just didn't have a fresh flavor or texture and generally lack flavor. The egg roll was just about the worst I have ever had, the shell was doughy and flavorless and the filling was just mush. The staff was very friendly and helpful. If you are a restaurant, and your weak link is the food......

After landing in San Antonio yesterday to kick off my summer vacation, the very first thing I did…read moretoday was ask my friend to bring me back to this restaurant. The reason is simple: we ate here two years ago, and it left such a great impression on us that we had been looking forward to coming back ever since. Fortunately, not much has changed in terms of either the quality or the overall presentation of the food. Everything is still delicious, especially the Pho Combo. To be honest, it's far better than most of the pho we've had in Germany. That doesn't mean the pho in Germany is bad--it simply means this place matches my personal taste much better. As for the downsides, they're almost exactly the same as before. Parking is still a major challenge, and I understand that's probably not something the restaurant can easily fix. We also tried calling ahead to reserve a table, but they don't take reservations, whether you're coming with a group of 5-7 people or just 2-3 people. We arrived at 6:45 PM and still had to wait about 40 minutes before being seated, which was honestly quite inconvenient. Coincidentally, there was live music tonight, which was a nice surprise. Unfortunately, the sound system wasn't very good, so it was difficult to hear what the singers were performing. Then again, this isn't really the type of venue where people come specifically to enjoy live music, so most diners didn't seem to pay much attention to it. One thing I did notice was that either the kitchen has made a few changes over the past two years, or perhaps my own taste has changed a little. The food felt slightly saltier than I remembered, and the pho broth was richer and creamier. While that added some depth of flavor, it was a bit too rich for my liking, to the point where finishing the entire bowl of broth felt a little overwhelming. The braised short ribs were incredibly tender--so tender that a knife was almost unnecessary, and they could easily be pulled apart with just a fork. While many people would probably see that as a positive, I actually missed the slightly firmer, meatier texture I remembered from my last visit. That said, these are relatively minor issues. The quality may have dipped just a little compared to our previous visit, but this is still an excellent restaurant. If they can fine-tune those small details, it would easily return to being one of my favorite places. There's a good chance we'll stop by one more time before heading back to Germany.

Is it that time of year for another 1618 update? Absolutely…read more After my umpteenth visit, I think it's safe to say I've worked my way through almost the entire menu (minus a few noodle, chicken & vegetarian dishes). My 2025 review still stands, but after so many visits, I've noticed a few items haven't been good as they used to, particularly the chicken wings (and yes, all three of them). The Garlic Wings haven't been hitting quite the same. They've started to taste a little dry, and the saucier wings taste better the next day since they don't have time to steep through once served. The Filet Mignon Pepper Steak is still my favorite dish on the menu, but I still can't justify ordering it family-style anymore. It's delicious, but the portion just doesn't match the price. One of the newest additions--the Truffle Fried Rice is spectacular. It's light, not overpowering with truffle, and the fish eggs really adds the perfect little pop of texture/flavor. I don't think I breathed the entire time I scarfed it down!! 1618 is still one of my favorite restaurants in Austin of all time, but I think it's time for the menu to elevate a bit and dive deeper into less mainstream Asian cuisine. If anyone can do it, 1618 can.

Chicken karaage was what you would expect, similar to what you get at Japanese places. Portions are big. The sesame rice noodles were highly reviewed but kinda underwhelming. We got the hot pocketz too which are brisket based; they were very cheesy (smoked gouda) -- good flavor but the brisket isn't strong. My coworkers also tried one of their specials which is essentially a Japanese "famed dish" -- it's squid marinated in it's own guts. We placed our order at the counter, and somehow the staff magically delivers everything to the correct table...without numbers, flags, or those little buzzing gadgets. I'm still trying to figure out their secret. We especially enjoyed the open seating, modern décor, and communal dining concept. The indoor-outdoor layout is especially appealing during Austin's cooler months. For dinner, we ordered the wings, Brussels sprouts, and salmon bowls. My friend happily claimed most of the wings, as they were a little crispier than I prefer. The Brussels sprouts, however, were excellent...crispy, crunchy, and finished with just the right touch of sweetness. The true highlight were the salmon bowls. The salmon was perfectly charred and packed with flavor, while the coconut rice added a rich, slightly sweet complement that tied the dish together seamlessly. Loro delivered a fun, flavorful dining experience and proved to be an excellent choice for a birthday celebration.
