Having grown up in a household where dumpling making and preparation were treated as a meditation on perfection, I've been incredibly pleased to see Austin seriously upping its dumpling game. While I've yet to find a Korean joint with a proper Korean mandoo on offer, Chinese varieties are thriving with the likes of Julie's Noodles, Steamies, Lin's and, the subject of my review, Dumpling World. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Definitely don't expect ambiance here. After suffering the Triangle's persistent lack of parking, you'll walk into this place and find a really spare, almost utilitarian set up that screams "we mean business."[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] They definitely mean business. I've probably been here a good 5-6 times, and have tried almost everything on the menu. Soup dumplings shine -- my daughter refuses to eat them anywhere else -- and their recently introduced thumb buns, which I think are fried mini soup dumplings, just ooze flavor. More traditional half-moon dumplings, no matter your filling of choice, steamed or fried, never disappoint. Don't ignore the non-dumpling items too. I don't know what the seasoning is in their green beans, but it's ridiculously delicious. You'll never look at green beans or haricot vert the same way ever again. Good, but unremarkable, are the soups and stews. Better to get those at other Chinese eateries. I don't mean to dissuade anyone from those, but did you really come to a place called Dumpling World to eat anything but dumplings? We just love dumplings and needed to try them here. The parking was terrible for a Sunday, but still free. The service was friendly. We tried the soup dumplings, which were amazing big pockets of happiness with broth and meat inside. We tenderly picked them up and were careful not to lose any of the soup by using the soup spoons as cradles. The veggie eggrolls were perfectly crisp and came with a sweet and sour sauce, which we saved to go with the fried potstickers. I had the taro milk tea with crystal boba, which was a good size for not coming with refills. Suuuuuuuper disappointed with the consistency of this place. The first soup dumpling I ate had very light flavor but then the next one was PACKED with flavor(and super delicious) but then the third one I had was a middle ground between the two. This wasn't just an issue with the soup dumplings it was with all of the dumplings I had. I just don't understand how their dumplings are uniformed in size and filling but the flavor is just an after thought. I'm thoroughly disappointed as this place has the potential to be good but too much inconsistency ruined it. You see, they're BOTH good, BOTH ways. You get six dumplings to an order so theoretically, we could be looking at 24 dumplings. Still, I might be able to power through if I was hungry enough. The skins walk a fine line between chewy and delicate, which is the ideal balance, if you ask me. Fillings are abundant and downright juicy. Admittedly, the spicy tofu might have the slight edge, with a distinctive mala warmth and meaty bite, but it's a very close call. The food was delicious, and the servers were incredibly helpful and attentive. They really went above and beyond to assist me in making my decision. I particularly enjoyed my steamed bun. The portion of chow mien was generous, and I had enough for lunch the next day! There is parking at the triangle and also a garage with limited spots. Even though the menu offers a variety of other authentic Chinese dishes besides dumplings, I came here for one thing and one thing only--ALL THE DUMPLINGS. For a party of three, we were honestly surprised at how much we ordered and managed to finish. For the steamed dumplings and potstickers, they offered several options beyond the traditional flavors like Shrimp/Pork/Chive and Pork/Scallion. We decided to stick with the classics, just in different offerings. These were my favorites: Xiao Long Bao (Shrimp/Pork/Chive), Pan Fried Thumb Bun (Shrimp/Pork/Chive), and the Spicy & Sour Dumplings (Shrimp/Pork/Chive). I'm usually a steamed dumpling, soup, or dumplings-in-broth kinda girlie, but the Pan-Fried Thumb Buns... *chefs kiss* the crisp on the bottom buns were perfect. As for the other dumplings, though the dough is not as delicate as Din Tai Fung's, I'll take it since it wasn't chewy or tough like other authentic Chinese places I've been to in Austin. We dropped in for a really late lunch at 2 PM on Tuesday. There were 3 other tables in the restaurant when we arrived with party of three. We were promptly greeted and seated. The fans were blowing hard and loud so I asked if we could be reseated. The waitress indicated that she could turn off the fans instead. That was nice of her, rather than reseating us at any of the other 10+ tables available. We were rushed to order, then felt the disapproval from the waitress when we ordered only dumplings during our first round. Later added two additional entrees to the two dumpling orders. Both the pork soup dumplings and the pork, shrimp, and chives pan fried dumplings were really good, both juicy. The shrimp chow mein and the crab and shrimp noodles were good portions but way too salty. The food didn't take too long, about 10-15 mins. By the time our food was served, both of the waitresses sat down to eat on the other side of the restaurant. We felt like we were interrupting their lunch by asking for to-go boxes and the check. This is a big corner restaurant in the shopping complex. They have plenty of tables and booths. The ladies bathroom was very smelly, didn't feel comfortable using it, not even to wash my hands. There is lots of parking but it's shared with many other shops in the complex but there is also a parking garage. Not sure that I'll be back, considering that food and service were not great. Soup dumplings are good but I really like the spicy and sour dumplings. If you get pot stickers, go with the curry chicken and potato - the bomb. Dumpling World was great. My husband and I shared the shrimp and pork soup dumplings. They are freshly made in-house and arrive steamy hot to your table. They are soooo delicious! We also shared the eggplant and pork noodles. I'm not the biggest fan of eggplant but this dish changed my mind. Big fan of the slurry, flat noodles. We got some Shrimp and Pork and Chive dumplings and they were just okay. I had the pan fried soup dumpling buns ($10.95 for 4). The bottoms were delightfully crispy-fried, the dough was nice and thin, and they were decently meaty. Something was off about the soup though - it was sort of watery. I'm used to a richer, more flavorful soup dumpling broth. After reviewing online of the top dishes at dumpling world, we settled on these three dishes as photographed. I will say overall the price is pretty cheap compared to other dumpling places I've been to, but honestly you get what you pay for. The texture of the dough for the dumplings is quite thick as compared to some other high-end places like Din Tai Fung or 1618 here in Austin. Of the three dishes, I think the chicken, curry and potato potstickers was the best, the most potent flavor wise. The soup for the sweet-and-sour dumplings had nice flavor however the dumpling itself was somewhat bland in comparison to the soup. Despite a long line, they were able to see us quickly. I returned with a friend for a dinner, of course I'm getting different items the second time around. We ended up both ordering the peanut sauce noodles, I got the fried pork chop and my friend went for the steamed dumplings. Having the experience last time, I thought the peanut sauce noodle would be another very good indicator to the food here, and it was everything I wanted. The peanut sauce is thick and brings a good kick in the heat, the shredded cucumber is authentic too and adds a fresh and crunchy taste to the dish. When the noodle came, there was so much sauce it almost looked like soup! And the sauce really coated every single noodle, though it mean I got thirsty really quick into it. The noodle was definitely a very nice item to order, the portion is very hearty. The pork chop is fried the way I expected to be, just like back home in Taiwan. It was a pretty big piece, I wasn't expecting the pork chops to come in two layered stack, but it was a little thinner thus a little more on the dryer side. The sauce compliments the meat, and the chili oil on the tables again makes a great topping and pairs perfectly. The dumplings come in three colors, two for each flavor: shrimp pork and chive, chickekn and corn, vegetarian bok choy and mushroom. For my own preferences, both the mean options ar seasonsed very well, its always a good sign when dumplongs are seasoned just perfect not to need sauce to be savory enough or to cover the meat taste. The vegetarain dumping was well, it was just the texture of the filling was too soft for me as i'm used to meat dumploings. I want to point out again, chili oil with the church is perfect going with the dumplings. This is for sure not going to be the last time I'm here. My plan is perhaps next time I'll go for the dine-in only options on the menu! So excited! read more

All in all, everything here was fine (it's more a 3.5 star spot but I'll be nice and round up) but it's hard not to compare Dumpling World to Mian & Bao which is right next door though. Personally I prefer Mian & Bao since I'm a big fan of their sheng jian bao but Dumpling World is a good back up option since their space is larger and their menu has more variety. We did not dine in. Only been once for takeout but I have to say I was so happy it was one of the first times I actually felt like I was back in nyc having authentic Chinese food! The shrimp pork dumplings were fantastic. Pan seared on one side but super juice in the inside and so flavorful. The chow mein was delicious but a bit too greasy for me - I think I prefer lo mein that is less rich and oily. I was excited to try something new with the eggplant and minced pork noodles but this also was extremely oily. The eggplant and pork was tasty and the noodles themselves were the perfect texture, wave and bounce. I just wish it wasn't so oily and rich. For Austin, it's hard to find really good Asian spots, but this place surprised me. I got the beef noodle soup, garlic green beans, and the spicy beef and sour dumplings, and everything was so flavorful and delicious. Ive been wanting to go to Dumpling World for a while so my girlfriend and I went for a quick date night. We arrived around the area at 6:30pm and the retail parking area was already filled up. So we went into the garage parking, and luckily grabbed the last spot. Walking into the restaurant it wasn't too busy yet, and we were greeted immediately. It probably took 10-15 minutes for our food to start coming out. The Tan Tan Noodles and the Spicy & Sour Dumplings were sooooo good. I tasted flavors that I never found in the Austin area. Highly recommend! I was most excited about the soup dumplings, but I would have to say they were just slightly above average. It had a lot of soup inside, but I thought the soup dumplings were a little bland Seems like a great family outing spot since the prices are fairly average. I am always on the hunt for some legit dumplings, especially xiao long bao (AKA soup dumplings). I found myself in Austin on a Saturday evening and decided to try this place out based on Yelp reviews. I was not disappointed! Let's start with the parking. There are surface open parking spaces in the area but very few. I couldn't find any so I opted to park in the garage which also has very few spots for retail. I parked in the basement (felt sketchy) and proceeded to walk a short distance to Dumpling World. I was not a huge fan of the parking situation so come prepared or carpool. We had an early dinner so we were able to be seated immediately. By the end of our meal, the place was packed. The crowd was quite diverse (which also means it wasn't just Asian customers). The staff were nice and efficient. We came super thirsty and finish the jug of water rather quickly. I asked for another and they promptly refilled it. It was ice cold with a hint of lemon. Refreshing! We ordered 1 dish per person and the food came out as each dish was ready, so it was a good pace for us. Specifically, the pan fried soup dumplings and the thumb buns were delicious. There was so much soup in the xiao long baos that I felt like I was quenching my thirst with these dumplings! My wife burned her tongue on the dumplings which means they came out piping hot! (That's a good thing, y'all.) All in all, we will definitely be back. And as I searched for this restaurant again in order to write this review, I found out there are other locations closer to me so I'll be visiting those soon too. 4.5 stars from me for great food, great service, average parking, and slightly high prices.
