An order out joint that stands out among the best Chinese American food we've had in Austin. We recently took a trip to First Wok and were very impressed with what we found. There is good parking out front and the ordering process to pick up is very smooth. The food was hot and stayed hot during our trip back up north. We ordered beef and broccoli, plain lo mein, steamed dumplings, and one egg roll. Everything ranged from meh to good, or a 4 to 7 for a numerical idea. The thing that really pushes it over are the LARGE portion sizes. The beef and broccoli was delicious, velvety and savory, packed to the brim. The white rice it came with tasted old but it's plain white rice so who cares? The plain lo mein was fantastic. The noodles had a great chew and good flavor with every bite, again, a large portion. The steamed dumplings were the most ehh of the food, definitely not the worst we've, just not good. Lastly, the egg roll was pretty good, we actually wish we had ordered more of them. Summarily, the food at First Wok is pretty good for Austin's Chinese food scene but compared to others it's meh. We'll give this place an Austin 4 but in the Bay or NYC it probably wouldn't hold as high. read more

It goes without say that even at 4 years later First Wok is dominating providing more than enough food for South Austinites. Their portions are large and their service is friendly and quick. From ordering to picking up food you should have your order within 10-15 minutes tops. Call in to order only (no online ordering) and pickup is the only option. I do not think they allow folks to dine-in so your best bet is going to be calling your order in ahead of time. Parking is easy to get in and out of. Our food is always ready when we walk in and checking out takes little to no time on waiting. You know this place was our go-to for Chinese food takeout for about ten years! But the last couple of times we went, it hasn't been the same. The crab puffs (Rangoons) are still good but the fried rice, the lemon chicken, the sweet n sour pork, the chicken and vegetables, the seafood etc just haven't been hitting the same way. First Wok is in a bit of a sketch area, but it offers the same no frills vibe I've been in search for. Like many Asian households, we're accustomed to eating one way-- FAMILY STYLE. I'm simultaneous disappointed and impressed. Disappointed because when I order "broccoli with tofu," I expect deep-fried tofu with crispy edges, smothered in a garlicky brown sauce. A bit trashy, oily, but comforting and nostalgic. This version is decidedly more healthy, with huge chunks of steamed firm tofu in a very light, almost clear, almost flavorless sauce. That said, I really can't be mad; it was a TON of surprisingly healthy, fresh, and hot food. No lie, it must have been at least two pounds of protein and veggies, plus a pint STUFFED full of white rice, crispy wonton chips, and a fortune cookie. I would give them six stars if I could. We ordered takeout here for New Year's Eve and it was delicious! One of the best Asian food restaurants in Austin. They give you large portions and the quality is perfection. I will say it was very busy on New Year's Eve and it took about an hour to get our food, we called our order ahead of time and waited at the restaurant for about 30 minutes. But that's to be expected on a holiday. The staff was amazing and working very hard, and the quality of food was still amazing. They are extremely rude. I saw a lady who worked the front counter treat a disabled man in a wheelchair horribly. She brought his food out in a bag that was leaking some liquid and placed it on his lap. He complained about it getting him all wet and she responded that she didn't have the time to clean up the mess and walked back inside. Another customer went inside to complain and argued about her treatment of the disabled man and she finally came out with what looked like a dirty dish towel to cleanup the mess. She is the only person who takes orders and I refuse to order my meals from her. Also the website says they have inside dining but that is a lie. They closed their in store dining during the covid lockdown and laid off all their staff and have never opened inside dining since. read more

Still hankering for potstickers/dumplings I decided to order from here as I haven't been in a while and remembered it being good. I called to put in an order for delivery but now they only deliver withing a 2 or 3 mile radius and apparently I'm about 5 miles. I wasn't going to order but after getting through my hairwash day and a quick yoga session I was hungry enough to fight the 5pm traffic. I called back and ordered combo lo-mein (spicy), steamed dumplings and 1 egg roll. I wasn't given my total over the phone but it didn't matter. I was told 15-20 minutes, which was just enough time to throw on sweats and get up the road. I made it there rather quickly. I'm sure before 20 minutes had passed since placing my order. I walked in and right up to the counter. The gentleman there wasn't overly friendly. Pretty blunt and straight to the point, asking me for my phone number immediately when I reached the counter. Surprisingly my food was ready and waiting! Even with his demeanor, he still found it within himself to fill me in on his allergy woes while he ran my card. I just found the juxtaposition a bit funny. I got home just as quickly as I'd made it to the restaurant and was seated and ready to eat in no time. To my delight everything was still hot and fresh. The lo-mein wasn't as spicy as I would have liked but I do find that most of the time. I think they try to account for the American pallet and not make it as spicy even when requested. Outside of that it was EXTREMELY tasty! It was loaded with meat, mostly beef. But there was also a ton of shrimp and I think it was pork. There was probably more meat than even noodles! and the veg was almost non existent. Even though I enjoy veggies I don't think anyone would complain about having an overload of meat in their dish. The egg roll was beautifully brown on the outside and fresh and crisp on the inside with the veggies and ground meat. It was exactly what a really good egg roll should be and for some reason so many places do wrong. Here, it's perfection. The dumplings said it came in a serving of 6 but my container had 8. I couldn't believe it! And they were so good!! The wrapper was the perfect thickness with no remanence of oil anywhere. I keep wasabi at home and I mixed it with the soy sauce and was in heaven. I only stopped coming here because there's a place closer and ones that deliver but none of them hold up to this place. I view Americanized Chinese food as separate from Chinese food - not necessarily because the flavors and ingredients are different but more so because they fulfill different cravings. While I consider soup dumplings or dim sum as comfort food, Americanized Chinese food feels more like a guilty pleasure. While Panda Express fulfills that craving very well, I like having other local options, and First Wok is one of them. The portions are huge and I think good for the price. My favorite thing here is their Crab Puffs (aka Crab Rangoons) - it is an extremely satisfying version of it. I also like their General Tso's Chicken and Sesame Chicken. Their Orange Chicken is okay but it's hard to beat the Panda Express version that forever stays in my mind. I've also tried the Sweet and Sour Pork but it is not done well here so I would try another place if that is what you're craving. read more

This is a review, a love story and a Thank you. First Wok has been a part of our lives for over 20 years almost 30 . The food is amazing and I am the first to suggest them as a great take out place. My husband and I came across them during an ice storm during the mid 90's when we first started dating. They were the only place open and we ordered food that lasted us through the storm. Through out the years we have gone there for date nights, lazy nights of take out, movie night at home nd just to satisfy our Chinese Food craving. Even after moving out of Austin, I will pick up food when in the area. The Hot and Sour soup is one of my favorites. The Hot Chili Sauce they have is like no other. The Singapore Noodles are one of my favorite, so is their Combo Fried Rice. Love the Shrimp with Lobster Sauce and the fried wonton stripes are addictive... Can't stop at one! The portions are huge and will last for days. They have always be consistent with the quality of food. I have not one bad thing on their menu and I can say in almost 30 years we have tried almost everything. They have been part of many birthdays, anniversaries, had a crappy day and need comfort. Thank you for the memories. Sadly they are now a part of a routine that brings me comfort during a difficult time. My husband has had many stays at St. David's and it has been a part of my routine to pick up a meal to take home so I have something to eat when I go home in between breaks from the hospital. Lets face it we all love Chinese food, from Generals Tsu's chicken which will make diabetics cringe, to fried rice and beyond it's a comfort food for us. First Wok is located in a very accessible area of town and are fast with fulfilling orders. That said their lobby is still closed so only take out is available. So, if you're wanting to belly up to a table and get your carbs on, no dice hombre. They packed my meal very well and it was still so hot when I got home, I almost burnt my tongue (I live 20 mins away). The soups are fantastic. I had the wonton soup with had a light but flavorful broth with 2 huge wontons for the lunch special studded with green onions. While I didn't get any bok choy in it the soup was still really good. The hot and sour soup was equally tasty and well executed although it wasn't what one generally gets from a Chinese restaurant. I was expecting some tofu and mildly flavored however this version had a lot of mushrooms and egg strains throughout the soup. The heat comes from what I think was white pepper and while the heat isn't that hot, it does linger in the mouth for a bit. I'll add in the egg rolls here as they weren't much to write home about. A smidge below generic with boring filler and lots of dough. I wish they had fried spring rolls instead, but I'm not going to complain much about that. Now onto the main courses! I'm going to start with my least favorable item the pork fried rice. While the rice was perfectly cooked and the meat was plentiful, the execution was off. I almost think the cap from the soy sauce broke off b/c the rice was seriously dark and the soy flavor was off the charts. I didn't enjoy it and this is the third Chinese restaurant to cook this way. I'm not sure if that's the style now, but I don't care for it. As for the protein, I was expecting Char Siu for pork. For those who don't know that's the pork with the red ring and very tasty with notes of Asian goodness. The pork I got was just added to a hot work and not cooked with traditional Chinese methods. Next up was the Lo Mein. The noodles tasted stale to me as if they've been laying around for a while or in some package. Moreover, I wish restaurants would be more consistent as the noodles weren't round but like a rectangle if looking at it from the top. While this may sound trivial the shape of food makes a different in flavor. For instance, elbow macaroni doesn't taste like spaghetti even though they're the same ingredients. That's because it hits the taste buds differently and tricks our minds into thinking it's a flavor rather than texture. Finally, and I noticed this off the bat, is great Chinese restaurants have a slight smoky flavor to Lo Mein and fried rice among some other dishes. This is subtle yet can really elevate the dish and it comes from a wok that's been seasoned for years. I know I'm nitpicking here but these things really make a difference. My last option was the chicken rice noodle or "house noodle". Most Chinese restaurants have opted for the "Singapore rice noodle" as their mainstay by adding curry. I like that too but I prefer the simpler option. But let me tell you it was outstanding! Plenty of shredded carrots, celery and onion along with thin rice noodles and plenty of meat. The flavor is on point with what I'm accustom to having and the textures are spot on. While I prefer the chicken option I'm confident all meat options will be flavorful In summary the portion size and prices are a real selling point for any family. Also, First Wok is easily accessible in terms of driving and the staff are very friendly. However I found that one dish out of three wasn't enough to entice me back anytime soon until I have a desire for chicken rice noodles again. I believe a lot of short cuts are used which isn't deal breaking but disappointing. Overall not a horrible experience but not one to pull me back either. read more

It was a 2.5 star experience, for which I will round up to 3-stars (A-OK). Looking for great lunch options around Austin area since I sometimes am able to work from home, I've been on an Asian Cuisine kick lately and searched Yelp / Eater / Google / etc....for really good lunch options in the area. First Wok popped up on the short list and I bookmarked them. The reviews on Yelp were mostly positive, although a few suspect, but I took a chance one Friday afternoon to check this place out. First think I notice when I got here - I know this place. I've driven by it several times and thought about stopping in but never have. For COVID they are not allowing anyone inside - you either call in your order or you can put in an order at the front door where they have a table blocking your entrance. I have no idea what to order so I ask for their help, they have me a few options with one being their fried rice is popular. He said I could order combination so I did. Went down the list and "Triple Delight" caught our eye. He said it was going to be spicy and has a few veggies and meats in it - I just nodded and ordered it. Prices here are respectable and reasonable for lunch. So - let's start with the fried rice. You get a lot for your money here - yes that's true. The to-go container was heavy, they stuffed it with fried rice which had shrimp and beef bits and an egg roll embedded. The taste was.....okay. It's just a lot of dark soy sauce mixed in with the rice, and to me that's not really authentic. It's not the best fried rice I've had but it was okay. Would I get this again? Ehhh, maybe if I was on a budget looking to fill up. I guess that's the best way to explain it. The Triple Delight dish was primarily some beef and thin veggies in a dark sauce. It looked okay, it tasted somewhat bland though - lacked some flavor. I don't know why or what, but the quality is mediocre - although not bad. They give you a lot of food, I could not finish it, but I wasn't really excited to finish it if that makes sense. I got a sweet red dipping red sauce for the egg rolls - that was okay, very syrupy. The egg drop soup has a strong yolk taste which turned me off, yet the won-ton soup was okay and respectable. So overall it wasn't a delightful experience here, but you do kinda get your bang for the buck with good portions and respectable prices, yet the quality is okay and doable. I would possibly go back here to check other dishes out and may ask for it to be steamed and see how those are, but we shall see. read more
