Beef lomein - very good. Peapod tips cooked in garlic - needed more garlic in the wok

Very busy restaurant in a strip of shops next to a condo rental area. Had to wait about 35 minutes, but the restaurant had a digital queue system, so we sat outside in an area adjacent to restaurant that may have been outdoor dining for the place at one time. Table too small for our orders for three. Half a roast duck on a board with hoisin, onion, and celery slivers and wrappers. Beef lomein excellent wok flavor. Peapod tips in garlic, needed more garlic in cooking, but fortunately not too greasy. Mapo Tofu on the moderate spicy side and a large portion. Braised chicken and chicken broth soup and a container of white rice. Nice place, not great, but good. Prefer take out given the crowd and small tables. Park across the street in the garage as drivers fighting for street parking.

I really wanted to love the food here, but I think it's because I'm from Houston! Houston has some of the best Asian food and it's hard to compare when going to other cities. The fried rice was okay, didn't have much flavor, but I appreciate the portion! I did really like that the duck came with the broth (this was the selling point-definitely get this). The duck of was good, I believe this is what people usually come for. I would come again, but I do think there are better places for flavor.

3.5 stars if I could give it bc the Peking duck is good Everything else I've had has been meh both times I went. Eggplant was super mushy, fried rice was flavorless, I don't even remember what else we got, but the sauce was pretty much the same as that in the eggplant. The service isn't great, but it's not that kind of place, you know what I mean? You don't go for the service. You go for the Peking duck. It can get kinda loud and echoey in there because the space is so wide open.

I absolutely like this place!!!! The wait staff are so friendly and welcoming, I was told this restaurant serves the authentic Pecking Duck and it didn't disappoint. Even my parents who are from Asia love it so much. We also ordered the Fish Fillet and Drunken Chicken (cold dish marinated in XaoXing Wine) it's so delicious. Everything tastes so good and within reasonable pricing

As someone Chinese who grew up in California, I'm picky about authentic Chinese food, so when we went to Bamboo House Austin for Lunar New Year, I was genuinely impressed. Every single dish was authentic and perfectly balanced in flavors. The roast duck was perfectly crisp and rich, and every dish tasted like home: balanced, bold, and deeply authentic. It's rare to find true Chinese flavors in Texas, but Bamboo House nails it. The atmosphere was lively, the service warm, and even during the holiday rush, everything felt beautifully done. Easily one of the best Chinese meals I've had in Austin - and the perfect way to celebrate the new year.

Deservedly, Bamboo House has received the moniker as best Peking duck in town. We always get the duck and are learning other dishes we like and don't like. Certainly, the combo eggplant, string beans, and sliced potatoes is a winner as is a beef tongue dish that I don't recall its name. The flounder in hot chili soup is wonderful yet intense and not for the meek. Did not like the pork belly dish and thought that the sesame chicken would've been great if it was served a little hotter temperature wise. Table service is always very attentive and pleasant. Portions are good sized. Went once with a table of 10 people and got as many if not more dishes and the overall impression was thumbs up.

By far the absolute best Peking Duck you will find in Austin, and likely all of Texas. While a chain, the quality is superb. As an Asian, we don't expect the best service, but we do expect the food to be on point. Fortunately the service is still decent, and the food excellent. After ordering, our first dish arrived in less than 2 minutes (the duck soup, what you get when you order duck), then in less than 10 minutes the second dish, and the third a few minutes later. The duck takes a while to prepare, so it's always the last dish to come out, but rest assured it's hot, as well as the pancakes. Pro tip: Go early, as the duck tends to sell out. Everything is family style with large portions, so go with a group! If you run out of rice, ask for more! (it's bottomless) The Duck - absolutely amazing. My wife always comments how fantastically crisp the skin is. Make sure to put a little of all the condiments on your pancake. Bok choi - just cooked with garlic, it's a fabulous dish, and one of the few vegetables that my friends who hate veggies love. Braised Pork Belly - absolutely phenomenally tender. It will melt in your mouth. A super savory dish with a dark rich sauce, perfect if you're a gravy lover like me who will pour it over the rice! Mmmm

Delicious Peking duck and chicken. Excellent size and taste. The milk tea was a bit too sweet for me.

Great place to take a group of people (4+) I've been to Bamboo House before. Their most popular item is the Peking Duck but we got two entrees this time-egg plant and red braised pork belly. Pork belly is yummy and sweet. The fatty parts are the best. However some of the pork is dry so it's not too consistent. Eggplant didn't soak up a lot of flavor (but the next day when we ate the leftovers, it was delicious!) I only went with my husband and didn't realize the dishes are so big. We had a lot of leftovers especially the eggplant, which we took to go. The eggplant was talking a while to arrive and now we know why. It's great how the entrees automatically come with white rice. Some other restaurants would charge extra and only give a small bowl. There's usually a long wait (hence, why there is a waiting area with games), but we were lucky and got seated almost immediately after a group left. There is outdoor seating as well. You can park in the garage and the first two hours are free. Next to Hui Lau Shan, the Hong Kong mango dessert shop.

My boyfriend has been wanting me to try this place for awhile. i finally agreed and omg. We really should listen to them more often This place is amazing. we first came yesterday during the rain, we ordered sweet and sour chicken and the duck. which were both amazing. We also got the Hot green tea which to my surprise was regular green tea instead of matcha which i LOVE. and it was a perfect meal for the weather at the time. our server was great and paying attention to us. We also decided to stop by today since i loved it so much and we got the Eggdrop soup, Lo mein with Beef and the duck again. This time the duck was 100 times better than yesterday and omg so good. The eggdrop soup was one of the best i've had before and was amazing. And the lo mein was so tasty. This time the service was lacking just a little bit. But that's okay. They don't have any music unfortunately both times we came. Overall 10/10 would come back a million times again.

10.30.2025 - BAMBOO HOUSE - AUSTIN, TEXAS - we don't have roasted Peking duck in Killeen - so here we are treating ourselves - I miss ONG CHOY and real Chinese food. There's Chinese food in Killeen but for some reason it's not the same. I'd give this place an 4.5 out of a Full 5. It was delicious but I haven't compared it with other Chinese food in the area just yet. Maybe that star will change to a 5. I just need to try more Chinese restaurants in the area first because I got nothing to compare it to. The food was delicious - we ordered the Peking Roast Duck, Duck Broth Soup, Ong Choy (Pea Sprouts), Mapo Tofu, Boiled Filet Fish with Chili sauce, Honey Walnut ShrimpI really enjoyed our meal today. Wow I really enjoyed our meal today. It was definitely a great experience. The waitress also was very nice and checked up on us every 15 mins. The entire restaurant was clean too. Service was great!

It is about time I reviewed this place. I've been here so many times yet I haven't had time to review it. I have a love-hate relationship with this restaurant for many personal reasons. The first couple times I came. It was so packed. There's limited parking around the apartments too unless you want a parking in the parking garage now which we can validate so that's good. Plus we had to wait for a long time that time but there's fun video games you can play while you wait in a very small waiting area or you can be outside. Winter is fine but when it's hot, it's not that pleasant. There's a yummy mango expensive Hong Kong dessert place next-door. But this place is beloved by my son and a lot of his friends who love Sichuan food and Austin is just in love with Sichuan food. And I being Cantonese have a hard time liking mala and all things spicy and all my Canto friends find it hard to love all these new sichuan places popping up. With that said, I have to give an unbiased review of bamboo house and I've tried to like it more over the years but I went recently because of a bday request and just have to say that it is constantly not bad delivering high food quality. We ordered half Canto half Sichuan food that's not that spicy so pea leaves were done excellently. I love the size of the plates. The beef lo mein was good. Salt and pepper or anything here fried is good. The two main staple Sichuan dishes we had to order that I can't seem to enjoy, but they are done spectacularly is the sour cabbage pork soup, which is pretty famous and the mala chicken so spicy. Just be careful of those little numbing spice balls. They pop so many into the soup. They are lethal, but that is why people keep coming and that's why this place keeps thriving besides the duck and all the other things. Suffice to say, it's not bad if you want good food for good quality and large plates come here and maybe an off night like a weekday night might be better but weekends it will be very crowded but enjoy. They're doing well. Very hot woks which are great for Chinese food, big tables so that there will be room for big families and smaller tables for more intimate settings. It's happening. It comes out fast. It's pretty clean in there. I'll give it a thumbs up for another Chinese place, probably the better one out in Austin right now and not too greasy or dirty versus others like Asia Café could be :)

Did not have a reservation on this occasion, but they always make me feel welcome and manage to fit us in. Sat on the outdoor covered patio that was cool and shaded. Also had a Fresa Paloma with Socorro Reposado Tequila, Contratto, strawberry, lime, grapefruit, five-spice that was very sweet and garnished with a flower. You are given a card where you can mark your dim sum selections. I ordered the Shrimp Pancake, Snow Crab Ball and Chinese Sausage Sticky Rice. The standout was the shrimp pancake that had a really great texture and flavor. The snow crab ball had a strange texture with shrimp surrounding the snow crab claw. The Chinese Sticky Rice is always a favorite. Also ordered the Truffle Egg Fried rice and Birds Nest with Seasonal Vegetable. The Truffle rice is so flavorful like a flavor explosion in your mouth. The Birds Nest is made with fried potato shreds which contain the a variety of vegetables including cauliflower, peppers, mushrooms and asparagus. The nest is also edible and has a crunchy texture. After landing in San Antonio yesterday to kick off my summer vacation, the very first thing I did…read moretoday was ask my friend to bring me back to this restaurant. The reason is simple: we ate here two years ago, and it left such a great impression on us that we had been looking forward to coming back ever since. Fortunately, not much has changed in terms of either the quality or the overall presentation of the food. Everything is still delicious, especially the Pho Combo. To be honest, it's far better than most of the pho we've had in Germany. That doesn't mean the pho in Germany is bad--it simply means this place matches my personal taste much better. As for the downsides, they're almost exactly the same as before. Parking is still a major challenge, and I understand that's probably not something the restaurant can easily fix. We also tried calling ahead to reserve a table, but they don't take reservations, whether you're coming with a group of 5-7 people or just 2-3 people. We arrived at 6:45 PM and still had to wait about 40 minutes before being seated, which was honestly quite inconvenient. Coincidentally, there was live music tonight, which was a nice surprise. Unfortunately, the sound system wasn't very good, so it was difficult to hear what the singers were performing. Then again, this isn't really the type of venue where people come specifically to enjoy live music, so most diners didn't seem to pay much attention to it. One thing I did notice was that either the kitchen has made a few changes over the past two years, or perhaps my own taste has changed a little. The food felt slightly saltier than I remembered, and the pho broth was richer and creamier. While that added some depth of flavor, it was a bit too rich for my liking, to the point where finishing the entire bowl of broth felt a little overwhelming. The braised short ribs were incredibly tender--so tender that a knife was almost unnecessary, and they could easily be pulled apart with just a fork. While many people would probably see that as a positive, I actually missed the slightly firmer, meatier texture I remembered from my last visit. That said, these are relatively minor issues. The quality may have dipped just a little compared to our previous visit, but this is still an excellent restaurant. If they can fine-tune those small details, it would easily return to being one of my favorite places. There's a good chance we'll stop by one more time before heading back to Germany.

Is it that time of year for another 1618 update? Absolutely…read more After my umpteenth visit, I think it's safe to say I've worked my way through almost the entire menu (minus a few noodle, chicken & vegetarian dishes). My 2025 review still stands, but after so many visits, I've noticed a few items haven't been good as they used to, particularly the chicken wings (and yes, all three of them). The Garlic Wings haven't been hitting quite the same. They've started to taste a little dry, and the saucier wings taste better the next day since they don't have time to steep through once served. The Filet Mignon Pepper Steak is still my favorite dish on the menu, but I still can't justify ordering it family-style anymore. It's delicious, but the portion just doesn't match the price. One of the newest additions--the Truffle Fried Rice is spectacular. It's light, not overpowering with truffle, and the fish eggs really adds the perfect little pop of texture/flavor. I don't think I breathed the entire time I scarfed it down!! 1618 is still one of my favorite restaurants in Austin of all time, but I think it's time for the menu to elevate a bit and dive deeper into less mainstream Asian cuisine. If anyone can do it, 1618 can.

I promptly received an email acknowledging the issues, with promise to communicate that forward. I also received a credit. The timeliness of the response made it clear to me that there is an eye to quality control and that there's earnestness in making things better. I'll raise my "C-" to a "B-" and will give them another chance. ------------- Delivery: It took 1hr 25min for an order of soup, spring rolls, and lettuce wraps to be delivered... on a Monday... after lunch rush... when the restaurant location is less than 2 miles away. Online order: 1:03p; food in hand: 2:27p. That was a bummer. It's normally 30-40 minutes. Food: The small container of the dipping sauce (packed in the spring roll container) had a warped, melted lid... it was packed at the top of my complete order bag, and I suspect that it sat under a heat lamp for about 40 minutes. The spring rolls were soft and pithy and soaked in in the sauce. Kinda yucky. No crunch left. Food: I ordered chicken lettuce wraps. That came in a bi-partition container; lettuce on one side and chicken on the other. The lettuce was totally limp. The lettuce was dark green and looked like it was the nasty stuff you might peel off of a head of lettuce that sat too long in your refrigerator drawer. I'm sure it started out fresh when the meal was packed, but putting it in a container with hot food, and then next to a container of soup, and then letting it all sit under a heat lamp for 40 minutes did it no good. I did contact Tso's online and suggested that they pack lettuce separately for their lettuce wraps. Food: The chicken, the hot & sour soup, and the spring rolls were all a bit salty... saltier than usual, IMHO. Tso's is usually a solid "B", but this meal barely met a "C-".
