The Thai basil leaves were absolutely ginormous, and they gave us plenty of them alongside very fresh limes, which I appreciated. The bowl itself came loaded with meat--they definitely weren't skimping to save money here. The meat-to-noodle ratio felt great, and every bite actually had substance instead of leaving me fishing around for toppings. As for the broth, I landed somewhere in the middle. It wasn't quite as clear or light as I personally prefer, leaning toward a fattier, milkier undertone that almost reminded me of a Vietnamese pho take on tonkotsu. The flavor itself was undeniably very good, but the richness may have been a bit too much for me personally. One way I usually judge how much I love a pho broth is whether I want to sip the bowl down to the very end, and this one wasn't quite light enough for me to want to do that. I've had richer and deeper pho flavors elsewhere, but I still appreciated the flavor profile here and could absolutely see why this place is so popular. It feels hearty, comforting, and satisfying in a way that clearly resonates with many people. Despite how packed the restaurant was, the atmosphere ended up being surprisingly pleasant. Service moved very quickly, which honestly impressed me given how busy everything felt. Even with the crowd, I didn't dislike the spacing or setup at all--the restaurant still felt comfortable, and the sound of people enjoying their food all around added to the lively, welcoming energy rather than making it feel overwhelming. Always on the search for a good Vietnamese restaurant. Heard about this one and finally got to check it out. Upon arrival, it was quite busy. I put my name down in the wait list and sat next door in the tea shop. They are connected. It's a decent size location and a bit noisy, but the food makes you forget how loud it is. Once we were seated, our server approached us right away. They are all attentive. We ordered the egg rolls and pho. Both were delicious. We waited for ~30 min since we had 7+ people. -There's a bunch of Asian people eating here. -The pho resembles my mom's homemade pho. It hit the spot. Fresh jalapeños for added spice is good enough for me. -I ordered a kids size because the regular looks big. But you can upgrade to a large for $2.50. You can only choose one meat for the kids size. I went with the thịt chín (brisket) and they were so generous! The brisket was delicious and tender. -My fiancé ordered the đặc biệt (special) with all the meats. The ingredients are fresh and they actually cook the tendon through to be soft and edible. Expect the place to be very crowded and the hours of operation are very narrow. But they do move fast. Not sure why I haven't rated this place yet because I have been here so very many times. It is probably my favorite pho place in town. It's just so clean. The broth is so clean. It just makes you not feel too bad after you eat this. Its always hot and fresh and fast when it comes out. So very fast lol They are so busy for a reason. Today is no exception. It was so busy during lunch hour on a Saturday. There was a lot of people and a huge line outside. We had to put our names down and it took a good not too long 15 minutes or so and we almost had to share a table, but they were gracious enough to give us our own table if we waited a little longer. We tried the wings for the first time because sometimes it's out. It's a little steep for six wings for 9.50 but it was fried perfectly well and delicious. Very tasty with a lot of fish sauce. My usual combo was perfect. I love how they give you a lot of different cuts of meat and meatballs and lots of noodles. Well worth the large. My friend got the tofu pho and all the times we've come everyone has gotten different items. We even tried the banh mi one time and it was delicious as well. I see they have rice plates now. Slowly expanding their menu. So smart! This place has been consistent. It's definitely my go to place. I tell everyone about if they want a good pho place. They don't open all the time though so always check the hours. They don't need to. They can afford to close half the week because of so many people coming all the time. So happy for them. Happy it's not too far from where we live. It's kind of fun that it's connected to Hong Kong tea next-door. Have yet to really love their drinks there. We stopped by this restaurant to grab a quick bite to eat before we head out to a show. Don't be deceived by the simple menu. The food quality is spectacular. We got some delicious banh mi and the bread that they use has a nice crunch on the outside, but it is soft and fluffy on the inside. They also use some really unique meats on the inside that I appreciate. It's some sort of pork type of slice. The pate compliments the other flavors so well. And I love that it doesn't break the bank. Customer service was very friendly and speedy and they played a role in us having such a great evening that day.!! I've been meaning to try this spot out for a while since it os often touted as the best pho in Austin. I'd say I would agree so far with the pho spots I've tried. There are plenty of decent to good options in Austin, but Pho Phong Luu seemed to have the cleanest, but also most flavorful broth out of them all. From the photo I took, you can see that the broth is very clear, which generally indicates the level of care they took to prepare it. I also tried the wings, which I thought were very flavorful, but perhaps a bit too sweet for my taste with the Garlic sauce. Of course they are a good contrast to the pho, I just think in general, I don't prefer sweet chicken sauces. Another thing to mention is that they've got their efficiency down to a science. You put your name on the waiting list, and you can wait next door at HK tea, which is a perfect spot to grab a quick drink while you wait for your table. This is deemed by many to be the best pho in Austin. My Viet friends and friends of friends have endorsed it. I have grown fond of pho over the recent years, but this one was so disappointing for me. I do hope I just ordered the wrong type of pho, although the service at the end was so bizarre that I was left feeling unsettled about it. They are very good at moving their line though and seating people efficiently. We were seated at a long table with other customers, which is a nice strategy to save space. I prefer eating cooked meat, so I was wary of ordering the eye round steak, which makes up half of the pho options. My friend recommended that I get the well done flank instead. It was unfortunate that there is no option between raw/undercooked and well done. I was worried it would be difficult to chew, and it was indeed extremely difficult to eat. I experienced prolonged moments of silent terror when some of the meat went down my throat, but I couldn't chew it off, so the rest was still in my mouth. I was choking silently, but thankfully I survived. The stringy meat aside, the pho just didn't have much of a flavour to it. I really can't see what the hype is about. My friend liked it though, and he described it as "one step above mid." Although I felt like I was lowkey dying from the meat, things were overall not too bad until the server came for us to pay. She asked us if we were together or separate, and we said separate. She said okay and chose my friend's individual order to pay on the device. Then she left and never came back. We were waiting for quite a while, realized she would never come back, then my friend started toggling around to choose our other orders so we could pay. Luckily he knew how to do it, but it would be wild for the restaurant just to expect customers to do it. Came for lunch on a Sunday afternoon with a party of 11 around 1pm and had to wait about an hour before we could get seated. The restaurant shares an open-ish layout with a boba shop so we were able to wait inside the boba shop, away from the heat, while we wait for our table. Once we sat down, we were able to order quickly and the food arrived pretty quickly. Everyone ordered their own pho and we got some summer rolls and spring rolls to share, as well as 2 of the friend rice. Everything was delicious and we ate it all. Plenty of parking spots around the building. Plenty of tables inside. But always bussin so expect a wait unless you come at odd hours. It seemed like most people who come here sit down already knowing what they want, cause the servers asked us what we wanted as soon as we sat down! I honestly think this is the only Pho place that I've been to that's 100% MSG free. I thought the broth was on the sweeter side, but it was still very delicious. Pho Phong Luu is neighbors with HK Tea. It's easy to traverse from one side to the other through the gap in the separating wall between them. Ordered a Combination Pho and their Special Bahn Mi to go. Was ready in a jiffy (less than 10 minutes) at 10:30am in the morning. Packaging: The pho came in three separate containers. Meat and noodles came in a plastic bowl, but the raw beef slices wrapped in plastic wrap were hiding underneath just above the noodles. So if you get takeout from here, it'll be good to double check before pouring the broth over. I do appreciate the wrapping of the raw sliced beef, as it prevents oxidation and getting blood on the other items. But I would place that beef on the top layer rather than the bottom so that customers are aware of the plastic wrap. I ended up transferring the contents to a ceramic bowl. The broth came in a a separate plastic container, not piping hot to avoid diffusion of any non-polymerized material into the liquid. Opening the container, there was a strong smell of star anise. I dumped the broth into a pot to heat it up. The bean sprouts, basil, and sliced jalapeños came in a separate baggie. Once the broth was ready, I poured it over the other ingredients, then added in the veggies. I opted to not add the Sriracha or Hoisin sauce (which are provided in little packets). The broth was on the lighter side, but still had a wonderful flavorful. It was not an intense dark brown beefy flavor, but a really good savory essence filled with more spices, herbs, and onions. The lengthy jalapeño slices lent a hint of spiciness. The various beef cuts contained in the dish also had very nice savory flavors (perhaps even more so than the broth!). In contrast, the tendon and tripe were less flavorful than the broth, but on the plus side they were soft and not chewy. The rice noodles. I believe their rice noodles are pre-packaged, not freshly made. Their noodles were definitely almost soft enough that if I wasn't paying close attention I might believe they were fresh rice noodles. Regardless of whether they were fresh or pre-packaged, the noodles did their job. Bahn Mi: Glorious, very slight sweetness, well-balanced savoriness. I'm definitely going to order this another time. The pickled radish, pickled carrots, cucumber, cilantro, and bread become a platform for elevating meat fillings within.
