I was excited to try Bep Saigon after the high raving reviews and recommendations. I wish I had a better experience here. The staff was a bit stand offish vibe. No one smiled and borderline rude. We had ordered: *Pork Eggroll: 3/5- the eggroll filling to wrapper ratio was spot on. The eggroll was traditionally vietnamese but I do not get why the vietnamese eggroll is served with a sweet and sour red sauce. The sáuce was overbearing and made the eggroll not good. I wish there was fish sauce which would have complimented the Eggrolls more. Also, the eggroll was borderline cold and slightly warm. It wasn't freshly fried and serve. I think the eggroll was fried and kept under the warmer light to grab & serve. *Hu Tiếu Ấp Chào - 2/5: the noodle was like a patty and was super thick. The noodle was oily and not cohesive with the dish. The broccoli and veggies absorb the watery sauce but the noodle patty didn't get any of the sauce coating. I wish the noodle was coated with a thicker sauce. The flavor was good. The beef was tender and good. * General Tso Chicken- 1/5: a friend got this. I tried a piece and the chicken was super dry. The sauce flavor was decent. * Hu Tiếu Ấp Chào with tofu: 1/5 tofu was not seasoned or coated with the sauce. Tofu was toss in as an after thought. Food came out quick. Would I recommend this place? Honestly I would like to try their other traditional vietnamese dishes but the service made me not want to come back. One of my friend couldn't eat with chopsticks so we were trying to catch our waitress attention. She ignored us so I had to get up and walk up to ask her. She didn't seem happy I was disturbing her and before i could finish my sentence to ask for to-go boxes she had her back to me. I had to turn to the other staff and ask for to go boxes. As someone who is both Chinese and Vietnamese, I've been lucky to grow up surrounded by amazing food from both cultures. Being born and raised in Houston, with its large Vietnamese community and constantly evolving food scene, I still think Houston has the edge when it comes to Vietnamese food. However, this place has caught my attention to the point where I make a quick stop here almost every time I visit Austin. The food always comes out quickly and provides a comforting taste of home whenever I'm away from Houston. My usual favorite is the Bánh Khọt, which are essentially miniature Vietnamese rice cakes and smaller versions of bánh xèo. Unfortunately, this time they were not nearly as crispy as on my previous visits and had far too many mung beans. The coconut cream also took away from the bold, pungent flavors I love in Vietnamese food. The nước chấm did not help much either, as it was noticeably more tame and mellow than others I've had. The Phở Đặc Biệt was pretty good, with a generous portion of noodles and a clear, flavorful broth. I also enjoyed the Salt & Pepper Calamari, which was very crispy, although a little oily. The Vietnamese Pancake was tasty as well, but thicker than I prefer, which made it less crispy than other versions I've had. The dipping sauce, however, was delicious. Finally, the Bò Lúc Lắc was flavorful, but the cubed beef was unfortunately tough and chewy. Overall, this place continues to be one of my favorite Vietnamese restaurants to visit in Austin. While this particular visit was less consistent than my previous ones, there are still enough comforting and well-executed dishes to keep me coming back whenever I'm in the area. read more

Their catfish is always a bit fatty, which I like. The crab fried rice was good too. I also had bun Rieu but it was just decent, wish it came with pork as well and more crab. Today, we wanted to try something close and healthier than the restaurants next door. We found Bep Sai Go on Yelp. I found that they had tendon pho on the menu and I was hooked. Usually, I would.order a pho Tai and hope that tendon was available to order as a side dish. Since I'm busy at work, I Dont have time to chew all day so tendons are perfect. The restaurant had a large crowd which is usually a good sign. The menu was so extensive it was hard to decide what to order. I ended up going with the Buddha's Delight with broccoli, carrots, water chestnuts, Napa cabbage & mushrooms stir fried in brown sauce. I ended up getting the beef for my protein. I didn't really like the flavor profile and the veggies were drowning in sauce. I had to drain some of the sauce off the plate because it was a bit over saturated. This is a rather impressive restaurant serving up Vietnamese fare. They appear to be open 7 days a week from 11am to 9pm. It's located north of the AMC, directly on the north side of the P. Terry's. Parking is plentiful. Interestingly, this was the first time I had a stir-fried rice noodle that was slightly crunchy. Their Hủ Tiếu Áp Chảo has a crispy fried exterior and a soft and slightly chewy interior. Basically, they are rice noodles that are pressed together and then cut into flat squares. These are stir-fried with protein and veggies; they are quite delicious. Their beef luc lac Bò Lúc Lắc is also fantastic. The beef chunks are uniformly sized, cooked with onions, and served on top of a bed of lettuce and tomato slices. Served with a lemony black pepper sauce on the side. The Thịt Kho Tàu, or braised pork belly, came in a small caldron with chunks of braised pork belly, scallions, and fried eggs, with a savory brown sauce. Their soups are also pretty solid, though I think the aforementioned dishes pack more punch. I've also ordered their vermicelli bowls, pho, and spring rolls to go; they are decent enough. A weakness I would point out about this restaurant is their rice, which is served with the beef luc lac and the braised pork belly. It's the same feeling you might get as getting a fly in your soup or crunchy insects in your salad or cooked (but perhaps not well-cleaned) leafy greens. In this case, their steamed rice comes with way too many grains that have black spots. Sure, perhaps some insect larvae had a good time nomming on the rice kernels before being harvested, but I essentially always have to inspect every single grain for blemishes. By far, this restaurant serves rice with one of the highest densities of damaged grains, and it's no fun when you start mistrusting your food. This issue has occurred on multiple repeat visits, so I would encourage them to take their rice preparation more seriously, or at least use higher quality rice. In terms of payment, if you eat in, it's likely they may be short staffed a bit, so if you want to pay, venturing up front to pay is a good tactic. read more

Personally, I like the texture contrast, and it shows that the chef has strong wok skills. Braised Pork Belly This dish is full of flavor. Braised meat is usually cooked with soy sauce, so it may contain gluten. The pork belly is soft and melt-in-your-mouth rich, with a good balance of fat and meat. It's served with two "tiger skin" eggs--what my family calls eggs that are hard-boiled, peeled, and deep-fried to create a golden, textured surface. A familiar and comforting touch. Definitely an upgrade from what it used to be! Under new management about a year ago, they did some lux renovations and changed out the menu. On this Friday evening when I was so hungry, I was welcomed by the new owner. Who suggested the fish fillet, which was their special of the day. They even have the whole fish option too. I must say that the food options and flavors were fantastic! It completely changed my view compared to what was in the past. I was craving for their rice, cake omelette/ banh bot chien. And the flavors, the texture were way better than expected and compared to other places! A must order. My Vietnamese family loved all the other entrees as well. Would've been a great deal had the food been better. No chopsticks were given. I understand the quality of to go orders will always go down some. But the order came out fresh and I took a bite immediately in the car. The chicken was dry and rubbery. The "fried" rice was regular steamed rice cooked in stock. Not crispy at all and completely lacking flavor. Uncle Roger would've died eating it just so he could roll over in his grave at how bad it was. Located in/conveniently off of I35, Bep Saigon has been holding it down in this nondescript, aging shopping center for years. They survive on the strength of their food, yes, but also their amazing staff, which seem like family, even if they aren't. I asked what they would recommend for vegan dishes on the menu, and without missing a beat, the server said they could make anything vegan except for the soups, confirming that fish sauce was out. You can get all your favorite Chinese-American takeout dishes like General Tso's and Kung Pao, but I was more drawn to the Vietnamese specialties. Hu Tieu Ap Chao with tofu had that key wok-charred flavor infused into the chewy noodle cakes and plenty of fresh veggies. Likewise, the Banh Xeo is a winner, super crispy on the outside and somehow buttery, but not overtly greasy. Good food, good vibes, good choice all around. read more

Amazing hidden gem! First off, let me say that my girlfriend is Vietnamese and I regularly eat Vietnamese food on a weekly basis (so this review hopefully carries more weight). They have delicious staples such as banh xeo, bo luc lac and our favorite bun bo hue. When we lived in the area, we came every 2 weeks. Everything is reasonably priced as well. We've had friends and family visit and they also really enjoyed the canh chua. Their bun bo hue is some of the best we've had and we've been to popular Vietnamese hubs like San Jose & Houston just to eat. Staff is very friendly and the guy server cracks jokes from time to time. It looked like it was made in a takoyaki pan and then cut in half since there were "blank" baby pieces. For the price I expected more. The soup portion was much bigger than we expected for the size we ordered, so this felt like a generous serving. The fried noodle was pretty good! I enjoyed the texture of the noodle. We got the combo but I was a bit sad that tofu wasn't included. Pork belly clay pot was really small too. The fried boiled egg was interesting but I don't think it was worth the price. Went for dinner a few days ago and had a good experience! We got the chicken vermicelli bowl, the chicken was really good, I thought the sauce that it came with was a little on the sweeter side. The braised fish had really good flavor! It had a lot of fish bones so had to be really careful while eating it but thought it was good too. Overall both entrees were on the sweeter side and we definitely used the chilli oil/sriracha a lot. My mom enjoyed her pho and even took some home. 1 thing I like about this place is that they give so much! It's really shareable and you will have leftovers. I had to get the ap chao and shaking beef again and sure enough it didn't disappoint. The beef was better this time meanwhile the ap chao was better the first time for lunch. Not sure why. My husband loves Vietnamese pancakes and when we saw how big it was at the table next to us we had to get it. He loved it! My boys got the pad Thai lol not sure why even the waiter was like get something else ha but they did enjoy it. My girl got this stir fry noodle dish and she really liked it too. The best BBH in the Austin area! The soup is perfect, they give you so much meat and the right vegetables to go with it. We've ordered other items like banh xeo, bo luc lac, salt and pepper calamari, all were fantastic! Service is always great and fast. Plenty of parking and we're always seated right away. Restaurant itself is clean and bathrooms are well kept. Cannot recommend this place more! read more
