OK. This is a solid spot with kind people and a massive veggie pho for the price. (The large pho price here is a regular pho price everywhere else. That's a WIN.) It's loaded with fried tofu and big cuts of veggies (carrots, bok choy, broccoli, mushrooms), and they don't skimp on the basil, sprouts, lime, or jalapeños. HOWEVER, HERE is where they lost me: I swapped IN beef broth instead of the veggie broth for more collagen, but that broth came with such a heavy fried onion flavor that it completely overpowered the dish and took over the entire bowl. Not a hint of fried onion, y'all. A massive takeover. You might as well call this French Onion Pho. It turned what could've been a near perfect pho into something that tasted like French onion soup. If you love that flavor, you'll be happy. If you don't, it's a lot. DANG! It was SO close to greatness, but that broth threw everything off. If all of your other soup bases use lots of dried onions, LOSE THE DRIED ONION and check your other seasonings. Small changes make a world of difference. Best thing about this place is the value. Good size portions for the price but the food was just okay. I got the Vietnamese iced coffee, spring roll, and the chicken pho (pho ga). Both were great. What stood out to me about the pho was the broth. It was thin, but flavorful. It is clearly made with a good stock and not just cooked with the chicken bones for the soup, but made separately. It was also quite clean and clear. The iced coffee was as it should be. The spring roll was clearly made recently and was delicious with a nice sauce. The place was clean and the service was good and polite. Came Christmas Eve because they were one of a select few places that were open in the area and I was craving some Vietnamese food. Came in and told them I wanted ordered to go so they gave me a menu and I ordered the grilled pork rice dish. I used to go here quite a bit when a group of friends lived in North Austin. A few years have gone by, and I decided to go back today since it's always been a favorite. Everything was as good as I remember, EXCEPT 4 or 5 pieces of beef in the bowl of lemongrass beef vermicelli that were so hard and grisly I couldn't chew them. I could understand how one or two pieces of muscle or rock hard fat tissue (hoping that's all it was) might find its way past the prep cook, but this was really ridiculous and merits mentioning. The first one nearly ruined it for me, the next few definitely did. I kept hoping it was just a fluke as I pulled each piece out of my mouth. I finally just ate the noodles and left the "meat." We were in the mood for some pho and decided to give this place a try. It's been several years since we were last here. Upon seating ourselves, we were immediately greeted with two glasses of water. The waiter then asked us if we were ready to order. We needed a little more time to study the menu. After a few minutes, the waiter came back to take our order. Stopped in for bun Bo hue because I saw a review I just couldn't ignore. Wednesday around lunch and the place was busy! I was so excited I could hardly wait, once my bowl came out it was bun Bo city! Although looks could kill, the taste didn't really deliver. Lol. I was honestly sad throughout my meal. I felt like I was catfished. The bowl had it all: pork hock, blood cubes, Vietnamese ham, beef brisket, thinly sliced pork belly. Everything was there but it was all half assed. The meat was not carefully prepared/cleaned so each meat was very "gamey" yet bland. The pork blood was not cooked as I'm use to and I would describe this as undercooked, it kind of melted in my mouth a little. Which is not what I would like for a blood cube lol.... I would never eat this item from here again as I don't ever want my love for this dish to be tainted. The highlights are presentation, freshness of herbs/condiments, and fast service from very attentive staff. All were delicious and the portions were huge for a decent price. The meats in each dish were pretty huge. I wished they had banh mi sandwiches, but the bowl I had was fulfilling anyways. I can't believe I have lived in Austin this long and just now made it here. My friend and I got the Vietnamese Fried Egg rolls (pork and veggies with fish sauce) and Fresh Spring rolls (shrimp, pork, veggies, vermicelli, veggies and peanut sauce) to start and we both devoured the fried egg rolls in no time. The spring rolls were good too and went well with the sauce. For dinner, I had Pho Ga (chicken noodle soup with mixed dark and white meat). It was absolutely delicious! The broth, the chicken, noodles, basil, everything and the quantity was so much that I had dinner and shared my left overs into 2 bowls that I had for 2 different meals. My friend had the Pho Dac Biet (steak, flank, brisket, tendon and stripe) and he finished it all well before I said I couldn't finish mine. We both thoroughly enjoyed our meals and will be back.
