We had one person taking care of us the whole time and she is very sweet. We enjoyed the service. We went around noon on a Saturday and we were the second couple but as we left, people were coming in and a few Togo orders. Will need to go back and try some more. read more

Pleasantly surprised at my dining experience. Seven Spice is a bright and welcoming atmosphere in an unassuming location. I was craving spicy food after all the Thanksgiving/Friendsgiving festivities so we checked it out. It totally delivered! We ordered beef in beef in hili oil, beef tendon and Dan Dan noodles. The food is flavorful and fresh. The woman server was sweet and attentive. The food is very very flavorful and we intentionally ordered dishes with the numbing mala flavor. Dan Dan noodles were thin and toothy. The beef was quite tender.in The portions are big and we probably have a couple more servings left and my husband is a big eater. This is our favorite Chinese restaurant. They have a very interesting variety of foods that are not commonly found at other restaurants. We've tried many items. Tonight we had the Hunan Spiced Pork and the Orange Chicken. The Pork is delicious, thin pieces of pork belly (?) and lots of jalapenos. It's spicy but others in the family who don't like really spicy food can eat it fine. The Orange Chicken is lighter than most, breaded but still pretty light. It's spicier than most places, with lots of little pieces of dried chili. Also really delicious. We also had, wonton soup and hot & sour soup, also both very good. The staff here is super friendly. She always greets me with a smile and makes really good suggestions of other interesting dishes to try. This place is mostly take-out so maybe not the most inviting place to stay and eat. But there are chef specialities that are best eaten fresh so worth eating at the restaurant now and then. We're spoiled because Seven Spice is right in our neighborhood and much better than other nearby options. Highly recommended! read more

One of the most authentic Chinese restaurants in town! No-frills environment, extensive menu, prices are not too bad. It's pretty empty inside so great if you need an impromptu spot for a large group. My favorite was the pork belly dish. Eggplant and string bean dishes were both good. It was pretty authentic in my opinion, and the spicy dishes weren't too spicy which was one of my concerns. The workers were so friendly and helpful. My only complaint was that for some dishes, I wish the serving size was bigger (especially for the honey walnut shrimp). The stand out dishes for me were the fish and the twice cooked pork. My friend found this place tucked in a quiet neighborhood and we decided to give it a try. It wasn't busy when we arrived on a Sunday evening, but I'm guessing the air conditioning wasn't working as it was considerably hot walking in. We ordered a few different dishes to split among the 4 of us. The green beans were spicy, too oily, and lacked the crispiness I was looking for. The fish filet with mustard came recommended by one of the staff and it hit the spot. This soup was ginger heavy and right up my flavor palate. The dan dan noodles were spicy, the cumin lamb was a little tough, but had strong cumin flavor, and the walnut shrimp was crispy and sweet. The service was great; they were very attentive. We hadn't been in a couple of years so thought we would give it another shot. The food was just ok, but the restaurant smells like the toilet backed up. Nasty! A bigger problem was the service. Only two other tables were in use but we had to ask for everything. The waitress had zero personality and acted like it was a chore to even be waiting on us. This unassuming location is a hidden gem in the Austin chinese food scene. It's not the flashiest or fanciest place but serves an array of authentic chinese dishes that our family has loved over the years. First of all, the yangzhou fried rice is quite literally the best in Austin, full of smokey wok hei and uniquely among the examples we've tried, features chinese sausage. But while you're here, try the tofu in crab sauce, the eggplant with basil, or the shanghai fried rice cake. We try to eat here every week, it's THAT good. Love Seven Spice! I was immediately greeted by a nice waitress as I entered the building. They have great lunch specials. You get a main dish plus rice and an egg roll, egg drop soup or hot and sour soup. Great portion size too for lunch. I never write reviews but felt I had to. I have lived walking distance from Seven Spice for a year and a half and never ate here because of all the iffy reviews here. I have lived on the east coast, west coast, and grew up eating Chinese in Chicago so I regularly crave a Kung Pao Chicken fix. I just ordered it here two days ago because I was dining in and I was really surprised at how good it was! The chicken was good quality, the veggies were cut proportionally to the chicken, the spice and sauce were not generic or oily at all, and it is a generous portion. I have to say that for the value, this might be the best Kung Pao Chicken in Austin at the moment and I have tried all the notable establishments over the past 10 years. Maybe it depends on the dish but for those Kung Pao Chicken lovers, this is a definite yes. Now I just have to have the discipline to not order it too often! read more

Another family dinner takeout experience, this time my Mom requested Seven Spice, because she enjoyed it the last time she went with friends. We ordered a few dishes: Vegetable Lo Mein - pretty standard Chinese dish, not much to say here. Tofu in Crab Sauce - this was my mom's and sister's favorite. I enjoyed it, apparently not something you can find in other restaurants. On Choy (water spinach) - one of my favorite vegetable dishes to order at any Chinese restaurant and it did not disappoint Jinsha Fried Pumpkin - I haven't had this anywhere else, I thought it was nice. It was slightly fried pumpkin, so you could still really taste the pumpkin, which I like. Sauteed Eggplant with Basil - Pretty good eggplant dish, I think I like the flavor in the garlic eggplant variation more than this one. Steamed fish filet & Tofu with red pickled pepper - This was my favorite dish, I've had this sort of fish filet at other Chinese restaurants and always enjoy it. Definitely one of my go-to dishes, this was slightly different because you get tofu with it as well. I think the fish was slightly overcooked, but surprisingly wasn't tough at all. The food overall was very tasty, and the menu had way more options than most quality Chinese restaurants here in Austin. I ordered online here for delivery as I was apprehensive about the dining experience from some reviews. Delivery came on time through the third-party delivery apps. I kept it simple and ordered the egg with minced beef soup and sauteed beef with onions. The egg with minced beef soup was nice and had more of soupy texture (i have had this in other restaurants and they go crazy with corn starch so it was nice to have a light soup). Other places also add tofu and this one didn't so it was just as described. The egg was just like in egg drop soup but more with egg whites. It was refreshing and light for a sunday meal. The other dish the sauteed beef with onions seemed to be popular in most of the reviews so i went with that. Just as you would expect it to be and the meat was very tender and the sauce was chef kiss; definitely had that taste you'd expect from Chinese cuisine. The rice that came with it was adequate and was plenty. I sopped all the sauce with it and was very satisfied. Will try more dishes in the future. read more

love the food, love the service. Seven Spice is my family's favorite Chinese restaurant for pick-up. Every time our college aged son comes home from Tacoma, WA, it's his first request. The staff (likely owners) are so friendly and easy to work with on pick up. You have to pay upon pick up even when ordering online. Since my son was picking it up, I called & it was no problem to pay over the phone. We have never eaten in person but I understand you can bring your own wine or beer since they didn't serve alcohol last time I picked up. I think there may be a fee to BYOB. I've never seen many people dining in so if you want a quiet place to dine, I'd say it would be good. read more

I love this restaurant. The menu, the food, the dining area and especially the people. It is not very large but is very clean with a friendly ambience. The menu is accommodating to most tastes and the food is prepared with excellence. They even have Moo Gai Pan on the lunch menu and it is one of my favorite Chinese dishes (even though it is actually an American version of Chinese. It's true ). The people who own this restaurant are so nice and respectful. It makes it an extra delight to come here. If you enjoy Chinese food, you owe it to yourself to visit Seven Spices. This is not your typical orange chicken type Chinese restaurant. This place serves up really good authentic Szechuan style Chinese food. We tried the fish in oil dish, pork with pickled bean, Dan Dan Mien. Everything was amazing! The fish in oil was a 10/10 with just the right amount of numbing peppercorns. In order to get the most of what they can offer, you need to dine-in and try out some of them more uncommon dishes. We tried a couple of chef specials that were the best things ever, and now I want to try all the chef specials. * Griddle cooked cauliflower with smoked pork? If I had one meal to eat for the rest of my life, this might be it. Definitely a contender. * Steamed fish filet & tofu with red pickled pepper: spicy, warming, and nutritive. *Probably* cures covid? More research is needed. We also ate a couple of less-spicy dishes, including the eggplant garlic and the shrimp broccoli. Both were crowd pleasers and would be nice on their own or as additions to a family-style meal. The eggplants were fresh and cooked to silky perfection. The shrimp dish was well-balanced and mild, perfect for kids or people with sensitive palates. Steamed dumplings were on point with nice dough-y wrappers that felt handmade. This place is not mailing it in, people! One last honorable mention, the minced chicken corn soup. Divine. It only comes in a big size, and that is OK. You can eat it all. I won't judge. It all felt very authentic, freshly prepared, and more in the realm of cuisine than just food. This was a very good family dinner choice. Northwest Hills is lucky to have this little hidden gem. One tip though, if you're not already familiar with all the various driveways, lane changes, and turnarounds of this particular section of Spicewood Springs Road, do yourself a favor and study the map first. New place in an area that I wouldn't think would have good food, but I was very pleasantly surprised by Seven Spice. The place is clean and open for dine in and take out and has a very authentic looking menu. Portion sizes are generous, which is good given the price. I do think for take out they could give a bit more rice though. I highly vouch for the eggplant with basil. It's one of the best eggplant dishes that I've had in a long time. Not too greasy, really well flavored, not mushy either. If you aren't an eggplant fan, this will definitely make you one. The green beans are also really good if you like that wok hei flavor. Spicy fish in chili oil is a classic sichuan dish and the version they have here is silky poached fish in an aromatic broth, a not too frightening amount of chilis/heat and some bean sprouts. It's one of the cleanest variants I've had in town. We also tried Griddle Cooked Chicken, which is bone in tiny chunks of chicken and potato which are seasoned with some chili peppers. The flavor is good, but the chicken is really dry and it's a pain to eat around all the bone. I've definitely had better than that but flavor wise it is on point. Salt and pepper ribs are also good. I expected them to be deep fried because, typically salt and pepper items are fried and then tossed in the seasoning after. They might be deep fried too, but there's no breading so it's just straight up as is with the seasoning. A bit on the salty side, but it's flavorful for sure. Overall, definitely want to come back to try more of the menu. read more

This is a traditional Chinese restaurant so dishes come out as they are done. My suggestion is to share family style. Staff is very friendly they greet you with a smile. When busy be patient they seem to have only a couple of wait staff but they hustle to get everyone taken care of. Our favorites are well to be honest almost the whole menu: Appetizers A4 Steamed Dumplings A5 Hot & Sour Shredded Potato Soups T1,2 these are the best Egg Drop, Hot and Sour soups I've had in a long time. Chef Specials : there are 36 items. I have tried most all are delicious but I tend to order these the most: H9 Griddle Cooked Cauliflower with Smoked Pork H13 Dried Spicy Pork Rib H30 Steamed Fish Filet & Tofu w Red Pickled Pepper Vegetables: V3 Eggplant with Garlic Sauce V5 Mapo Tofu V6 Dried Sautéed Green Beans If they have it on the special you HAVE to have the Jasmine Roast Duck. My first impressions upon arrival of this fairly new restaurant: friendly, accommodating service. I was able to see the daily specials on a chalkboard near the entrance, then instructed to sit wherever I wanted. Since they had strategically placed an artistic screen between the seating area and the entrance to the kitchen where the serving station was, I chose a cozy table behind the screen. I was given both a lunch and all-day menu, and my server was more than happy to describe dishes in detail , offer suggestions, and help me with my choices. She did not rush me, which I appreciated, but nonetheless checked on me periodically. Knowing I would end up with leftovers to take home, I ordered the Kung Pao Chicken and the Sautéed Eggplant with Basil. I LOVED the fact that on the lunches they allow you to choose 2 of 3 options as your "sides": egg roll, hot &sour soup, or egg drop soup. As I'm a soup-a-holic I chose both soups. Unfortunately they do not give you a rice option so all lunch specials come with STEAMED rice, not fried. I'm sure there's some sort of an up charge for fried if you'd like, but I overlooked that until too late. The Kung Pao was delicious and had all the veggies I like, beautiful and glistening in chunk form with white meat chicken. Carrots, green bell pepper, celery, peanuts...It was delicately balanced so it needed no soy sauce, and obviously served with love in both preparation and gorgeous presentation, plus (after discussion with my server) they gave me a side of chili oil in case I wanted to make it spicier. I saw some Yelp reviews complaining about the dishes being too mild, but the other side of the story is, the chef here is Cantonese so is expert at those types of dishes; hence, the delicate, mild flavors. So...if you are more of a Sichuan or Hunan fan, just ask for that chili oil on the side and you can make your dish as spicy as you wish! But they do, however, get high marks for their fish in hot chili oil, which I'd like to try next. My eggplant (Asian type) was to die for--perfectly stir fried, not mushy, delicious fresh basil leaves--I would definitely recommend and I will order it again. The soups I got were good renditions and were good portions so I took them home as well. I guess my only petty complaint would be that (maybe due to Covid concerns?) they had their sweet 'n sour and hot mustard in packets on the table instead of house-made versions. With the quality of ingredients in their dishes I feel that they should rethink this strategy, along with the practice of closing mid-afternoon, because I guarantee that's the time that I finally get around to ordering lunch! Please stay open, at least for take-out and delivery orders! I would definitely recommend this place, especially if you are looking for traditional Chinese dishes (think intestines, pickled mustard greens, pigs' feet, etc.) and not just the Americanized versions that we see everywhere. In this regard I think that they could give Asia Cafe a good run for their money, although their menu is not as extensive nor portions quite as giant. But the quality of ingredients, delicate balance of flavors, and care of both preparation and presentation are obvious in each dish that they serve. read more

I love that they have the real Chinese dishes here instead of what you typically see on every menu across the state. I tried the pumpkin with a salted egg yolk sauce and the double cooked spicy pork belly. They were both delicious and generous portions to eat the next day as well. My friend had the typical Chinese food fare. It was good, but not interesting. I need to go back and try many other dishes from the "Chinese" side of the menu.
