Favorite Chinese spot! The owner is really friendly too at first I didn't like coming here only because they had a guy that was always so grumpy and looked like he hated his job. Sucks cause it's a good place but lately I haven't been seeing him the owner takes care of us and has even done special request she's even help us create a dish to our liking. I will always follow restaurateur Meili Wu to wherever she goes. Formerly the owner of Oriental Kitchen in Pflugerville, I'll never forget when Meili opened her kitchen to the community during the Great Freeze of 2001, when many of us lost heat/water/power, and she cooked meals free of charge for anyone who asked. That's the kind of person she is, and I will never forget such kindness. Meili's China Fun is located a bit farther away from that original restaurant, and the menu includes some of the old favorites (sauteed green beans are a specialty) as well as some different options, but the menu seems much smaller than the Pflugerville version. One of the things I always loved about the original location was some of the "off menu" features like her family recipe fried chicken on Sundays -- not sure if that is available here, but I will look for it next time. Our food was generously portioned, arrived to our table fast, and tasted about the way I remember it. However, the service was a bit scant on a Saturday afternoon. I get the sense the restaurant has tons of take-out orders, so dining in (at least at the time we were there) was not a priority for the gentleman working. He just didn't have the best customer service skills. We had to ask for anything we wanted, like water, for example. (We were told to just help ourselves to bottled water from the case). I noticed with curiosity that each table is outfiited with a cooktop -- are these used? That would make for such an interesting experience. Yelp gets it right again. Four stars. * * * China Fun is on Rundberg east of I-35 in one of the poorest neighborhoods in town. Little known fact: Poor neighborhoods have the potential of generating absolutely first rate Chinese restaurants. Because so few entrepreneurs want to open restaurants in lower class areas - those restaurants that do exist tend to get a lot of business. With the sheer volume of revenue that the business generates, Management can afford nice decoration, good raw ingredients and high quality chefs. China Fun fits this formula like a glove. * * * The first thing that you note on entering China Fun is that the restaurant is crowded. There are people waiting for take-out orders and lots of the tables are taken. A lot of these people are regulars. The owner knows the name of many of them - and they banter back and forth while waiting for their food. When I was there, there was at least one romantic couple sitting at a window table. China Fun is considered to be a nice enough place that locals think of going there for a hot date. * * * How is the food? I had a spicy shrimp off of the appetizer menu. I have never seen this dish on any Chinese restaurant menu before. I couldn't tell you if it was a regional dish that we don't see in the U.S., or simply an invention of a creative chef. Either way, the dish was phenomenal. The shrimp is served in a spicy sauce with the consistency of a Bolognese sauce. I suspect tofu in hot chili sauce is a critical ingredient in making the sauce - but there are more ingredients as well to make the sauce more mellow. Then the cook adds industrial quantities of raw sliced onion. Onion makes up about 60% of the volume of the dish. The onion is like dried red chiles. It is too raw and too strong to eat straight up. (These are NOT 1015 onions. These are the small supermarket onions that have way more power and punch than the big onions.) The purpose of the onions is to flavor the rest of the dish and add a second element to the fundamental chili sauce. The dish works supremely well. This is actually a dish that would work just as well the next day. The longer those ingredients stay together, The more onion taste would go into the shrimp. I thought the dish was outstanding. My wife had an orthodox tofu and vegetable soup. There were a lot of vegetables. There was a lot of tofu. She says the quality of both of those were first rate. * * * Frankly, the neighborhood Chinese Restaurant they have on East Rundberg Is way way better than the Chinese restaurant I have in my Yuppie neighborhood on the West Side. If you are ever in that part of town, you can get yourself a first rate meal. * * * P.S. I looked at some of the other reviews. John L. from Oregon says some of the unique dishes are Taiwanese. Picked up food to go tonight and I wasn't impressed. No one sitting in the restaurant at 7:00 should have been the first indication. The food was ready quickly. I asked the man at the front of there was a restroom and he seemed bothered that I asked. When we returned, another customer was asking him for a menu so he could order, I didn't catch the first past of the conversation, but the host replied to him "dude, I don't even know what you're saying." It was really condescending and unprofessional. He told me out food was ready, as I was getting the bags, I noticed there was a sign behind the counter that said, "stop pay, fuck you" with a counterfeit bill. While I understand that would obviously be infuriating, I don't feel like that was appropriate. The food was alright. Crab wontons were the best thing. Couldn't cut the chicken with a knife, super dry. Egg drop soup was good. Chicken and fries had the ketchup inside the box and the cup melted and ketchup was all over everything. Love this small family business. It's pretty much our Thursday night staple. The eggplant in garlic sauce is my favorite. But i also LOVE the house chicken wings, the black honey garlic wings, the orange chicken, and basically everything else. I always get a hot and sour soup too, oh and the Chinese donuts. It's a true yummy hole in the wall. The portions are huge and shareable. We always order too much and have two full meals out of it. Try it! The owners are always there and always so friendly! We went this evening, craving something really tasty. I had Sha Cha Shrimp and the hubby had orange beef. We also ordered chicken and pork fried rice, egg rolls, hot and sour soup, egg drop soup, and I tried the tangy spicy shrimp. Needless to say, we have plenty left over for tomorrow or a midnight snack or three. The owners are really friendly and offered suggestions when I couldn't decide. They were able to add extra heat to my dish giving me the spice level I love. Everything was so good, we will definitely be back for more. The Hispanic gentleman behind vthe counter seemed very bothered to be bothered by customers. When he walked instead of saying "hello or welcome" he didn't say two words. We asked do we seat ourselves he again being bothered said get a menu order. I ask for a restroom and he just pointed with his long pointy finger. Finally we sit and waited for our food our souls came first one was wrong never did he apologize the worst service. We ordered drinks we never got our drinks instead we had to ask for them being bothered again he said "they are there" never asked could I get you a cup of ice or I'm sorry should have let you know your drinks were there. Plz don't let p like him ruin great reviews you already have. A person like him should be kept in the back where no one associates with. The guy that brought our food was 100 times better then the bothered guy and he was the that deserves tips. The food is good but service is HORRIBLE!!!!!! They guy that takes the order isn't friendly at all. Then we went. Bought drinks. Sat down and open our food for him to tell us we can't eat there. We are there a couple of weeks before no problem. If you aren't going to let people eat there you should have a sign or something.
