With items individually wrapped in plastic wrap to keep it from leaking out and cardboard dividers to keep your items from getting crushed, these guys know how to do takeout right. I decided to visit Asia Cafe to see if it would be a good fit for a car club visit. They do have tables for 8 with lazy susans for sharing. GF wasn't impressed a few years back when I drove way north to pick up food on Christmas while she worked a shift in a hospital. This visit she wasn't impressed with her entree choice again. But, I persevered knowing she would find a dish. First, the changes. No more screaming into the microphone! Instead, they ask you to keep your receipt face up so the number can be seen. Food is now delivered to the table instead of constant trips to the counter. This earned them a 5th Yelp star. I convinced her to try one more time; set the date for our final social of the year. Cold morning where we met in the parking lot for a quick meeting. Instead, we shuffled inside to wait for opening. We were offered a table instead of waiting in the front. Once opening rolled around I went up to order. Zhong Dumplings, Walnut Shrimp, Wonton Soup, Pork and Eggplant with Garlic Sauce, Beef and Broccoli, and a white board special Lamb dish. Oh, traded a cupcake from another adjacent business for Crab Rangoon. I had encouraged others to order dishes if they wanted as we were a table of 8. Came here last night with a bigger group for a birthday dinner and this spot was perfect! We ordered a bunch of items and shared them which worked out perfectly since the larger tables have lazy susans to spin the food around the table. We all loved the clay pot eggplant dish, kung pao chicken, orange peel chicken, and the honey walnut shrimp. I wasn't super impressed with the fried rice only because it did not taste or look like they used any soy sauce when they fried it. It was still very white. The owners were friendly and checked in on how the meal was going, just like last time. I love how tender the beef was. (Note: I didn't finish everything, so I asked for a takeout box. The beef was still incredibly tender when I reheated it at home.) Since we ordered two dishes, we received two bowls of rice. I want to start by saying my family have been eating and ordering food from the Asia Cafe for years and never had a bad or questionable meal. Even as the prices went from $40.00 for the two of us to $70.00 for the two of us, we went back because of their quality. They are a 30 minute drive from home. This past Saturday we ordered or usual Salt & Pepper Fish, Garlic Green Beans, Orange Beef and Hot and Sour Soup. The fish had a frozen taste and all the pieces were uniformed square pieces and the breading was not the same. Before the fish was fresh tasting and came in different sizes with a great light breading. The beef was more sugary than orange and tough. I never had tough beef from them. The green beans were over cooked. The soup, which is not regularly on the menu was very good and what I expected from them. We were so disappointed and for $70.00, not worth us returning. We will find other Asian restaurants closer to home. They need to go back to the way they were preparing food. Frozen is not the way to go. read more

I wish there were negative stars to review and I would give -10 stars. They made me and my daughter wait for 35 minutes for a 2 entree and 1 appetizer lunch. They realized they did not start preparing when I walked to the counter to ask. And there were hardly any customers. I think they did not want to feed us. And the restaurant smells gross. Hubby and I were all set to try some local Chinese delivery place tonight, based on a menu hanging on our front door knob from earlier, but, unfortunately (or fortunately, as it turns out!), they were randomly closed tonight, so, we went with Asia Cafe, and we are super-glad that we did! This is certainly not your hum-drum neighborhood Chinese. This is that times ten! Truly interesting and legitimate! Did we get adventurous in our choices? Not really, but what we had was vastly superior to our usual, and that definitely encourages us to get more interesting in our next foray into Chinese delivery at Asia Cafe! Wonton Soup - When I get wonton soup, I usually pull out all of the dumplings first to mainline, and I dump the majority of the broth. Not this time! This soup was DELISH! The wontons were delightful and perfectly-sized, and the broth had yummy bok choy and onions, as well as a perfectly umami flavor that kept me coming back for more. The flavor was actually reminiscent of boiled peanuts to me, in a weird and awesome way. I'll reorder this FO SHOW! Yang Chow Fried Rice - This is your typical comfort food combo fried rice, but just better! I can't identify why. Cleaner and more defined, if that makes any sense! The portion was HUGE, so I still have about three-fourths of it to eat for lunch! Yay! Fried Egg Rolls - These were our least favorite thing, which is a bummer because the reviews had us looking forward to it! They had definitely been sitting out for a bit, but we TOTALLY get that with this whole pandemic thing, so zero judgement there! House Dry Wok Beef - This was my husband's choice, and he was THOROUGHLY impressed! He said that this is the Chinese version of gumbo or chili for him! Just belly-warming goodness! I've been to Asia Cafe on and off for the last 13 years. I'm kind of surprised that they were voted one of the top Chinese restaurants in America. Perhaps the standards are lower in Texas because they definitely lag behind Chinatown San Francisco, Chinatown Chicago, Monterey Park in L.A., ... anywhere but here. I appreciated that their honey walnut shrimp was gluten free and all of their boba drinks are dairy free. This is my favorite place for authentic Chinese food in Austin. This is a no thrills restaurant in a strip mall. You order at the counter and they call our your number when you order is ready. The silverware, water, ice bucket, and cups are off to the side partly behind counter to order food. There bathrooms are off to the side if the kitchen. The portions are generous. The rice comes in a bucket to share with all at the table. I love their twice cooked pork belly. The cumin beef is delicious, but you have to love cumin. It packs a punch of cumin. All the dishes with Sichuan peppercorns are delicious. Tip: this is authentic Chinese food, don't order US Chinese dishes like Kung Pao or General Tso. Please get the Spicy Fish dish! It is a self serve restaurant so you order up at the front and help yourself to water, silverware, and dishes. You get a number for your order and when it is ready they will call it through the mic and you just go up and pick it up. It is a family-style restaurant so the portions are really big (hence the price) one dish is definitely enough to share with someone. The place doesn't look that fancy from the outside or even inside but there's definitely a lot of seating available and the food is fantastic! Whatever I ordered I enjoyed all of it. A lot of my friends enjoyed the Eggplant dish but it was a little too sweet for me. If you want to to-go your food and bag it up then it does cost 10cents to get a plastic bag. We stopped for lunch on a recommendation and were game to try it out; it's next to (part of?) a store next door that sells asian items (they were closed when I went). The restaurant is a wide open space with a bunch of square and larger round tables, and a side of the room with a more private dining "rooms". They have a nice selection of different types of dishes, from vegetables, some vegetarian, and all of the standard meats. I got the spicy fish, and was happy that it was flavorful, somewhat spicy but really focused on the flavor rather than being hot. So, after years of experimenting and asking others what they normally order at Asia Cafe, I finally found the perfect balance and meal combination for my family. I am going to compare two dishes that should be prepared at the same standard with the same ingredients at any Authentic Chines to go spot. I am of course talking about Mapo Tofu, and Asian Eggplant with Ground Pork. These two dishes will allow me to baseline technique, freshness, and flavors. Asian Eggplant with pork was simply heaven. The perfect healthy yet slightly greasy hybrid of A vegetable and pork. The cook on the eggplant and preparation removed all the sour after bite of the eggplant. The pork flavor was married with the sweet sauce to create this harmonic dish. On a rainy day, order this and rice and be happy. Mapo Tofu is effortlessly good. Perhaps one of the best in this city, this version lacks the fermented black beans, or it's minimal here. The sauce is perfect in consistency. I highly recommend modifying the spice if you're a wuss like me, and can handle the 5 peppers associated with the chili flakes. Over a trial of 4 times each version was consistent with the last. In addition, the tofu is nice and silky but maintained its shape. Both options are ways to eat vegetables and have the taste behind it. Asia Cafe is a hole-in-the-wall, no-frills Chinese food staple. Their Szechuan food is authentic. The spicy fish fillet is probably one of their most popular items and one I would recommend. We also really enjoyed the green beans; they have just the right amount of bite to them and are well seasoned. My partner loved the Chong chin chicken. It has a good balance of Szechuan peppercorns that wasn't too overpowering. I have tried their three cup chicken before, and it was alright. It didn't stand out too much for me, but if you love garlic and ginger, that might be a good dish to try. You order at the counter and pick up your own food when they call out your number, so there is no table-side wait service. Utensils/napkins are self-serve. Other things to note: they don't give you water cups for ice water, they only sell water bottles.
